Why "remote-first" companies, have now all as a policy the "twice a year" gatherings? If i wanted to leave my place and break my routine, i would prefer hybrid positions. Do i have to travel over the sea to balance the gained commute time all at once? Cant they think, that the fact that i apply for remote position, means that i have my reasons? (weirdo life, having a garden and animals, having family, take care of some person with health conditions, having my self health conditions, being weirdo again, living in nature etc)

    I thought those were like communal vacations

    I think it's so you know your co workers, like get to know them in person so can sync up to them in other matters easier later

    back in school these were called field trips and everyone loved them because no school! you could get in trouble with the other students cuz the teachers were all confused how to supervise you 😈

    now that you mention it, an 8 hour flight + 3 hours commute once per year, both ways, still only equals about two weeks on-prem, or equivalently about 1 day per month on-prem. It also excludes people who can't afford any on-prem. Food for thought.

    @Jabb03 yeah, you know how "optional" it is.

    @jestdotty you miss the point. we are not students. we are adults.i do not want neither i find any value to play paintball and ping pong with co workers. if i have to travel, i want to do it with family and friends. i want to travel to my own destinations and monuments. If i can have free day, i want to do a lot of things on my properties (maintenance) and farms. We are not all, city-kids yeah cinema, yeah drinks.

    If i wanted all this interaction, i would find plently of onSite companies. Seeking remote, means i do not find value on those things. Not all people are like transportation and dearrangment without serious reason.

    @gatoMalicioso we are the students of government dictates, that's what education was abouttt

    so naturally jobs view you as children, because we were "raised" to eternally be children and that's the most congruent way to deal with employees as a result

    but it's good you're trying to be independent. most people aren't

    @gatoMalicioso

    Maybe it's a country thing, but in France you can't get fired for not attending something optional, so I don't show up to those kind of things in my company.
