Since I was little I was fascinated by club light shows I saw on TV shows. I just couldn't find out how they made light react to sound, which were two completely unrelated things to me back then. But I wasn't dumb and somehow figured out that if I hooked some low energy fairy lights to my amp and turned the bass up, they would lightup to the beat.
3 fried fairy lights and angry parents for to loud music later I swore to myself that I would someday build something that could light up my whole room and react to the music I was playing.
I started coding about the age 13 (turned 20 a month ago) with some old school bat scripts. But I wanted something that would generate a .exe so I googled and ended up installing Visual Studio Express (again angry parents for installing without asking) and started copying my first VB.Net program together. From there no one could stop me. I wanted to archive something with an application and googled until I found what I needed and learned to code this way.
I learned writing decent vb.net code and itvwas about this time I came into contact with IRC. I lurked arround there and this is were I came into contact with Linix servers, because I wanted to code IRC (eggdrop) bots, so I learned TCL and got used to Linux. Time passed and I ended uo being a Global OP on some network back then.
I did go further, coded Minecraft Mods, thus Java, changed back to C#, learned PHP and started setting things up on my VPS, Mails server, web server, etc.
Nowadays I work as a Systemadmin / Developer Hybrid, earning my first real money doing what I love to do and guess what? In the meantime I proved myself I can accomplish what I wanted as kid. I bought some Club LED DMX capital lights and programmed a controller for them which can control them in C#, but in a way I can run it on my raspi using mono. I also coded a client which runs on windows which uses some native libraries to calculate the dominant color of the shown picture in realtime (Handels 24fps 1080p) and uses the lights as ambient light, like you see them behind TVs sometimes.
The same app uses Bass.NET and an algorithm to dedect a beat in realtime and switches the light colors. Exactly what I wanted as akid, but better.
I can even control the lights via the new Google Assistant and/or Tasker.
Feels fcking good.

I plan on writing a new free opensource plugin based modular home automatication server and pretty sure could use some helping hands..

I've uncovered the complot.
I clearly remember buying my first monitor, it was 15 inch, 1024x768. Then I went to a 19 inch 1680x1050 one, then 24 inch 1080p, then 27 inch 1440p...
Now I used two 32 inch 4K screens at work... and I come home, and the three 27 inch screens look a bit smallish, with the old 24 inch one being absolutely tiny on my desk.
It wasn't that tiny when I still owned the 15 inch screen? And my 5.5 inch phone doesn't feel as big as when I bought it either?
So the complot... All monitors slowly shrink over time, and they start shrinking faster when new monitors are brought into the household.6 -
Dual 27" Dell 4K HDR monitors, plus a Samsung 1080p and the retina display. My poor 2015 MacBook Pro with a Radeon R9 M370X 2GB can barely handle it. But there's just so much resolution that it's totally worth it!

Bought a 27" 1080p monitor and decided to use my old monitor besides it in portrait mode. This feels so good, portrait monitor's good for reading tutorials or for writing code. My coolest setup so far!

Not just another Windows rant:
*Disclaimer* : I'm a full time Linux user for dev work having switched from Windows a couple of years ago. Only open Windows for Photoshop (or games) or when I fuck up my Linux install (Arch user) because I get too adventurous (don't we all)
I have hated Windows 10 from day 1 for being a rebel. Automatic updates and generally so many bugs (specially the 100% disk usage on boot for idk how long) really sucked.
It's got ads now and it's generally much slower than probably a Windows 8 install..
The pathetic memory management and the overall slower interface really ticks me off. I'm trying to work and get access to web services and all I get is hangups.
Chrome is my go-to browser for everything and the experience is sub par. We all know it gobbles up RAM but even more on Windows.
My Linux install on the same computer flies with a heavy project open in Android Studio, 25+ tabs in Chrome and a 1080p video playing in the background.
Up until the creators update, UI bugs were a common sight. Things would just stop working if you clicked them multiple times.
But you know what I'm tired of more?
The ignorant pricks who bash it for being Windows. This OS isn't bad. Sure it's not Linux or MacOS but it stands strong.
You are just bashing it because it's not developer friendly and it's not. It never advertises itself like that.
It's a full fledged OS for everyone. It's not dev friendly but you can make it as much as possible but you're lazy.
People do use Windows to code. If you don't know that, you're ignorant. They also make a living by using Windows all day. How bout tha?
But it tries to make you feel comfortable with the recent bash integration and the plethora of tools that Microsoft builds.
IIS may not be Apache or Nginx but it gets the job done.
Azure uses Windows and it's one of best web services out there. It's freaking amazing with dead simple docs to get up and running with a web app in 10 minutes.
I saw many rants against VS but you know it's one of the best IDEs out there and it runs the best on Windows (for me, at least).
I'm pissed at you - you blind hater you.
Research and appreciate the things good qualities in something instead of trying to be the cool but ignorant dev who codes with Linux/Mac but doesn't know shit about the advantages they offer.22 -

So here goes my home setup. The leftmost screen is the first computer screen I ever had about 13 years ago. The right one came next and I upgraded it this year with a monitor arm to make it vertical. The center one is 27" 1080p (1440p was too expensive).
The wooden thing on the left is a ghetto stand for my laptop. Another salvaged thing is the fan on the middle, it's just pushed to a cut usb cable, not even soldered, but it works.
Peripherals are pretty standard: Cheap mechanical keyboard, Logitech g502 and a drawing tablet. My headphones are the shp9500 (best thing I ever bought).
Little by little it came to this and Im pretty happy about it.

From mobile to web Dev. Every tool now demands a lot ram and cpu power to run.
You at least have an ide and chrome open. These with the OS can reach the 8gb ram limit.
Also the screen, you need atleast a 1080p! I had a 15in 768p laptop for 5 years. I hated development on that.

We had a blind auction at work. Selling off 'redundant hardware'
Most of it was old crap but a bit a couple of bids in for shits and giggles. Also, I'm a desktop man but we have rolling blackouts so an older laptop for the simple sake of having something bigger than my phone to browse definitely has some appeal.
So there was an old HP Elitebook 8540W. A chonky boi if ever I did see one.

So bid R100. Now for context, a petrol is R22 a liter. A Big Mac is R43, a Big Mac meal is R90
So basically I big so I could harvest the SSD. And I won.
Much to my surprise, I simply attached the correct charger and it boots fine. The drive was empty though but that's fine cause I was gonna chuck Ubuntu on it anyway. Also found it was in fact 8GB of RAM. It also has a blu ray drive
So in summary, for the price of 1.1 Big Macs I got:

I'm most not sad about the 900x that I bid on as well. It was a cute little thing, my plan was to steal the ram and ssd out of this thing and put it in that, then boom ultra portable little machine for R400. Oh I also got an old monitor with a feint line down the screen for a grand total of R18 -
I've fucking had it with youtube, fucking jizz slapping knob butlers. I'm going to setup a mirror on my server, the idea is:
- Setup a youtube-dl cron that fetches multiple times a day both audio and video versions of the music playlist I have, hopefully with some sort of progress tracking of each download and total, so I could check if it has run successfully and have a nice dashboard, might need to do that myself (except if compactd proves itself to manage that all)
- Need to figure out a way to download the "best" quality but not go beyond 1080p, since if some videos for some reason are uploaded @ 4k, that'll be a waste of space
- Have Compactd/Funkwhale/Koel as the music player frontend for the audio version of the files, preferably one of them should offer download of the files too, so I could have a similar setup to spotify, though I could probably also just have some filebrowser installed or have a password protected index.
- Not sure what to use for the video versions, since sometimes the video goes with the music; plex? emby? suggestions are welcome
- Saw somebody (ab)using google drive as their backup for all the music they download, so I want to setup something similar, rsyncing all videos and music to some account, so in case shit majorly hits the fan, I can just download everything back

Turning my 27" monitor vertically was the smartest thing I did all year.
There's so much space now that just using it makes me happy!
That only drawback is the 1080p horizontal resolution which is not enough for many sites to fit without zooming out.
I feel like I will soon persuade myself to buy a 4K monitor...4 -
A 27" monitor with a 1080p resolution is a match made in hell. Oh the eye bleach. (At home I got 30" with 2k or 1440p resolution. Much better viewing experience.)
I'm having my first day in the office in the new job after two week of remote work. I think I will prefer working from home office definitly (even though the office coffee machine is nice).
It doesn't help that the internet connection in the office is 100 Mbit and at home I have 1 Gbit.9 -
Today, Linux kernel 5.8 was released, here is how it runs on my new laptop.
- Realtek shit ethernet still doesn't work (no, I didn't return it, because I would have to buy at least 2 times as expensive docking station instead and it is just not worth it), but considering Realtek, it is probably not a Linux kernel issue
- Battery life while watching videos was improved pretty significantly from 6.5 hours to about 7.3 hours (1080p HEVC)
- All temperature sensors are now working correctly
- Fan is a little more silent overall, probably because of some power draw improvements
- Subjectively, the system is a little bit more responsive overall4 -
Got a second 1080p monitor for Xmas ans it gave me an excuse to clean my desk off ;)
I included the obligatory 'screenfetch' window as well, haha.
Now to see if I can hack together something resembling a KVM switch from parts I have, to use the Mac mini on one of them (when it's needed on rare occasion, lol).
P.s. I'm sure many of you have more bad ass setups, I even used to have quads myself... But I'm not posting this to start some pissing contest! It's just mine and I'm proud of it :P

I use my PC mainly for gaming, Anime and home stuff.
Pc is a big tower under the desk btw.
Main monitor is a 34", 1440p, 60hz from LG (it's rather old). Second one is a 29", 1080p monitor from Phillips which I also could rotate. I really have no idea what I should use it for and I never really put it on anyway.
I could do more or less professional recording for Twitch or whatever but I'm to lazy and no pro, so I only use it for some multiplayer game sessions.
Questions or ideas how to optimise my setup are welcome.
Cable management is a mess btw.

Since I bought my laptop the screen was scaled to 125% (1080p display) so that it looks like a ~768p display.
I like it, it looks good, but now I'm trying it at 100% scaling (15" screen).
Yes, everything looks so small now, and my eyes cried for the first 10 minutes, but I'm starting to like it.
Do you have any similar experience? What do you prefer, 100%, 125% or something else? Why?16 -

Had a teacher that taught the intro to programming course by youtube videos. He wanted us to build the same app he was making in the videos as the assignment. He kept his code snippets private and expected us all to type it all out. He was on a 1080p resolution desktop... but his videos were 360p resolution with 8pt font.....

One thing that I'm not that big a fan of in Kubuntu is how I can't just scale one of my screens. I need to scale my 4k monitor to 1.5 the size otherwise it will all be too small. However my 1080p monitor also gets scaled, which is really doesn't since it makes everything wayy too big.
However, when I use display scaling my apps actually fucking scale. Meanwhile on fucking Windows they haven't figured that out yet

Installing the nvidia drivers on my linux machine is the bigges nightmare I've come across sofar. As soon as I have installed it and reboot, blackscreen and literally no way around it. Starting the desktop, nah stuck in a crashloop. Installing different driver, same issue. Using diffrent distro, that shit wont even boot properly. Uninstalling the driver seems to fix it but whats the point of running only on third gen i5 graphics. Shit cant even handle 1080p yt properly. And there are ppl saying if it aint broke dont fix it. FFS I DESPISE MAKING COMPROMISES WHEN I FUCKING KNOW IT CAN WORK BUT ATM IT IS NOT IN THE FREAKING MOOD TO DO SO!4

My laptop is 14 inch 1080p resolution display. None of the desktop environments scales correctly. Most of the time the font will ne too small or webpages on chrome looks weird.I want the display to look when on windows 10. I really want to switch to linux(gnome) but this is hogging me.13

so my friend and I are canvassing NLEs for our guys at the Post Production squad in our project (we were in charge in infrastructure). We looked at Premiere since it's kinda ok until we found Black Magic Design's Da Vinci Resolve.
First of all, I was suprised with the price. 299 for the Studio Version? Holy fuck, that's cheap as hell! Then there's a free as in free software version which has the core editing features with 1080p rendering. So we grabbed that and kinda suprised it requires postgres but as seeing Resolve having collab and render queues, it makes sense.
Installed them on the PCs the postprods gonna use, they were amazed. We literally saved 500 bucks for an NLE. When they asked how much is it. Our reply was:
"That's free".
and there was silence...
"And it's also 299 bucks for the cooler version".
And silence still ensued.
Guess our guys wasted alot of money on a pipeline that is cheap as hell but more jam-packed than any other NLE found in the market.

So I bought a gtx1650 gpu for my old phenom II X4 pc. It didn’t work – the screen vent black in like five minutes after powering up the pc.
I was disappointed, but instead of returning the gpu, I bought all the other components to build a new pc on ryzen cpu. Including the gpu, it all was like $400 and I still have all my old parts to sale.
Now I’m here, playing all the latest games like doom and wolfenstein on ultra in 1080p 60fps and I’m more than happy.
I basically found a way to convert my bad experience into good experience. I’m just off my therapy, so all that bad experiences that may seem insignificant are a big deal for me.
I didn’t knew it was possible to make a good emotions out of bad emotions that easy. If only I knew the way to apply this strategy for any arbitrary situation.
(please miss me with that boomer bullshit like “nothing is wrong stop whining and get over it” etc. I’ve been there, I’ve done that and I needed medical treatment afterwards. “Getting over it” just doesn’t work)6 -
To all the people using 1080p external monitors on macos mojave, did you notice that the fonts are now shitty?

I finally got my new 1080p monitor set up. The only issue is... it's supportive of twice that? Somehow? It's an ASUS VZ229, which is supposedly only 1920x1080, but it's displaying at 3840x2160? Whuh?11

My graphics card is only able to play video on YouTube with max resolution 720p. If I choose 1080p then I get less than 1 frame per second playback.
This is disappointing; seeing that Radeon 5600 XT graphics card can only play videos in 720p. I am pretty sure that poor performance is caused by Radeon graphics driver; there are no other problems of any kind on my system.

Question about conditioning my new android lithium battery.
I dont understand what's happening with my phone. Have old Xperia Z3 D6603 (running android 6.0 marshmallow).
Had problems with battery since it was not lasting even 5 minutes so bought a new battery from ebay and installed it yesterday.
So first time I put it to my phone it showed that it had 70% of charge. I've read in battery description that I have to discharge the battery and recharge 3 times.
First time I wanted to discharge from 70% to 1% and with a battery discharge app + youtube 1080p videos + wifi signal it took only around 1 hour and phone was at 1%. From 1% till complete discharge it took me extra hour and then phone died.
I plugged it to charge and after 15 minutes it showed that battery now is at 100% (which is insane, it should take 2-3hrs to charge it up to 100%). So I charget it for 2-3 hrs ignoring that it said 100% already.
I discharget it from 100% to 1% in 1 hour and now again phone is stuck at 1% and it took me 2 more hours to discharge phone until battery died completely.
I don't believe that this behaviour will fix itself. How can I fix this problem so that battery percentage would be distributed evenly? Now it drops from 100% to 1% in 1hr and then from 1% to 0% in 2 hrs.3 -
I might give up installing Manjaro... I'm... Too weak... Managed to install it but now my 4k screen is a bit laggy and I'm having some scaling issues with my 1080p second monitor. Idk how to solve those and, since Manjaro has a rolling release model I'm assuming doing anything in this will be frustrating. Not because the OS sucks, but because I lack the knowledge to make it all work smoothly.17

Why must pixel perfect scaling be so fucking hard... It all works perfectly but I'm limited to a max of 540p for the games camera view but as soon as you drop your resolution bellow 1080p you get stuck with 300p or lower... Ughhhhhhhh
Why did I choose to do pixel art... Wonder if converting everything to vectors would help, wonder is smashing my head into a fucking wall would help... -

How many monitors do you need and how do you use them?
I have three monitors at work, I used to have 2 in portrait and one landscape in the middle, during the last months I switched to the opposite (2 landscape and 1 portrait)
In my home I use 2 1080p displays landscape20
