Most embarrassing and lucky moment on the first week of job.
Me and my best friend were selected in the same company as developers. I was having some trouble with my system. So I mailed the description to our support department. Pop up was displayed from our chat client and person on the other end happened to be a lady. She wanted me to share a team viewer link with click access. So I did it and within 2 minutes of efforts she solved it. I thanked her, closed the chat conversation and started installing few packages. Meanwhile, I was curious to see her as she was really nice throughout the conversation. So I opened LinkedIn, searched for her name and found her profile. I zoomed in her photo and she was a pretty chick. I didn't stop and found her on FB too, and quickly saw all her DPs. I just copied her profile URL and sent it to my friend ( the one that got selected with me ) and told him about my conversation with her. Then I asked my friend
"She's hot. Should I send her a friend request or have to find some more troubles in my pc and talk to her few more times ? :P "
He replied "Dude what are you wanting for ? "
Out of no where, a pop up showed up. It was the girl we were talking about. The exact message was
"You can now close your team viewer session, and we can talk over FB :)"

The Irish minister Rudd said today (for the second time I think) that 'WhatsApp gives terrorists a safe place to hide and execute their activities. Might be a good idea in the future to ban encrypted chat apps'. (not literally like that but it's a good summary of her points)

Found out the hard way that copying a line of code from Teams chat will sometimes convert the spaces into unrecognized ASCII char.
Spent a few hours yesterday to fix the bad chars.

Just had chat with Microsoft support to solve a issue. I accepted remote session request. She did something and couldn't find proper a solution to my problem. Finally, she told a temporary solution and quit the chat.
When I was about to give feedback that she wasn't helpful, SHE CLOSED FEEDBACK WINDOW and then ended remote session. Lmao4 -

Hello devRanters! A little while ago some ranters and I who are all passionate about FOSS/Linux decided to get together in a chatroom. Slowly more people are coming in but just wanted to post this in case any foss/linux liking people would like to join! I am not even sure if this is allowed on devRant (posting something like this) so if not, my apologies and I will remove the rant!
Keep in mind that the chat exists for people who are very keen on FOSS/Linux/security/privacy so no offense but it probably isn't the best place for people who don't like/care about that stuff :).53 -
Sometimes I have really loose the will to live and find myself face palming multiple times.
I added live chat software a web frontend for a client. Very easy job that consisted of pasting in some embed code. The actual software is very good and has native ios/andriod apps - something specifically requested.
I got a call from my client about an hour ago, saying there is a "serious issue with the live chat".
My client stated the live chat won't work when his staff go home. He asked me what my solution to this was.
Saying "wtf" many times to myself I directed him to a settings within the chat software i.e. an "away mode" where an email is sent when no chat agents are available.
This apparently wasn't good enough and said I hadn't followed his brief of "adding life chat software to the website", which I had.
After a lengthy discussion I found the root of his frustration. He'd signed a contract with a client of his own, stating there would be 24/7 support via live chat on the website.
Obviously there a huge difference between adding a chat widget to a website and committing to having it manned 24/7 :)
After a further 10 minutes of trying push the blame on myself, the client insisted of having the chat software "appear" as someone was always online, even when they are not (people need to sleep ya know!).
Bu design, the chat software requires at least one agent be logged in before the chat status changes to "online" - why wouldn't it.
After a little while I was seriously wondering why I'm involved in this conversation. I jokingly stated: "Well you could always install Andriod/iOS app on your phone, login and permanently leave it running in background. You'd get lots of notifications, but the site would say the live is always online".
The latter was something I said in jest. To my surprise the client said he'd do that on his own phone going forwards. He actually thanked me for my "resourcefulness", lol.
I'm looking at the same dashboard now and there are 407 pending chat requests - his phone must literally be blowing up notifications :)

My own text mmorpg and it's selfmade Chat system! <3
Yeah it's barebones and has some flaws, but its the first project I set an worked through with a very pleasing result ^^
It's a CLI-Style interface with a command and chat mode, multiple rooms, user descriptions etc.
Some day I want to improve it even further, bring much more functionality in the mix, but first I would have to reinforce the base/core of the program ^^

Just some minutes ago, my boss asked a mate to move aside from his computer and began checking out some docs.
By the tone he used, I assumed something was wrong, I stood from my workplace and went to grab something from the kitchen. Came back and he was looking through a thread in slack between a mate and another work mate.
I thought he was going to send something to himself but then he asked me if I could help printing out the screen. Took a quick look and they were talking shit about him.
Now, it'll be an awkward silence until I go home and those two stay to argue about that thread.

Email piping chat system.
The chat system had to take replies from web and send them to an email, which the admin user can reply back via email and it publishes straight into the chat.
It was all fun and games until they wanted HTML based emails and content going back and forth, and attachments going both ways.4 -

We all work on the same room: Devs and testers.
In order to communicate with each other without taking off our earphones, we use the chat app.
Ok, sometimes the chat app has delay sending messages.
I really, really hate when one of the testers comes to my desk without telling me he's coming to my desk! >:v and this is the reason why I hate it so much: I'm concentrate in my code, listening to ASP or SPA and, suddenly, I feel a heavy presence behind my monitors. I look up and I see a very penetrating gaze from the corpulent tester looking at me (he's tall). Every time he does that I almost have a heart attack D:
"There's a bug I want you to check" he says.
And I check my chat app if there's a delayed message from him. Nothing, NOTHING >:v
Always, when I want to go to his desk, I send him a message
"Is it ok if I go to your desk?" and he says me "You don't have to ask for it, just come here" but the thing is that I do that because I expect him to do the same :/
Fortunately this doesn't happen every day, but it pisses me off, and I don't know how to tell him to stop doing that because I don't want to be like a... jerk? intolerant? I don't know

I hate Skype for Business with a passion. It's the most garbage useless chat program imaginable. It can barely send basic text chats without throwing an error, and it can almost never send an image without the upload failing. The fact that it can't even save conversation history for each of your chats within Skype is ridiculous -- it fucking saves the conversation as an email draft in Outlook. Come on Microsoft, why do I have to open a completely separate program to view conversation history?! Skype conversation history should be saved IN SKYPE! Fucking AIM was able to save conversation history. I've tried multiple times to get the company to move to Slack or Teams, and for some reason they think that Skype is a good program and they ignore the fact that it's completely useless. It's 2019, why are we using a program that's built like it's 2009? I swear they haven't updated Skype at all in the last decade20

Fuck it, fuck mattermost, HipChat, Skype, and whatever other digital text medium for team communication.
These are great applications, but used for great evil. They feed cliques and passive aggressive "side" conversations. Every team I've been on has something like this, and it allows people to cultivate hate for one another even though they're sitting in the same room.
Texting allows you to complain about a coworker to your clique. Each clique can have it's own thread. This empowers people to silently rip into other team members. It prevents rational adult conversations and builds stupid little secret societies.7 -

I accidentally deleted the Facebook chat history I had with someone. Wanting it back, I quickly whipped up a program for my Teensy to download and executes a Java app I wrote. The Java app gets the Facebook cookies, decrypts and uses them to read the chat history which will then be sent to me. Now all I have to do is insert my Teensy via USB and I'll have my chat back! *mission impossible music playing*3

Do you guys have private chat community among your workmates?
Here at the company in working in, we have an official WhatsApp group created by our boss. That group is practically dead and boss is the only guy who occasionally posts anything. That is expected.
Then we have another WhatsApp group among us employees and boss or someone of that level is not invited in it. It's pretty active and fun group.
Then we have guys only group which is intended for guy talk and nsfw happens to be a part of it. Nothing surprising about that.
Similarly, girls also have their own exclusive group for their own stuffs.
I think it's inevitable and customary that such chat groups would be formed among workmates or classmates.
Anyway Just wondering, is this case same for you?... esp for people in US?6 -

This was result after building bot + chat website from scratch including training with embeddings. Design is generated by GPT, I tried my own but all ugly.
It's quite cool huh? Ask it to write some code for you. It's absolutely terrible. If it's down, try again in 5 minutes. I'm still working on it.
What's the result? I finally have a toolkit to make good/serious bots. Code could be bit better, but that's for other day.
Stack: self written webserver (and yes, you can post a gb to it or ddos it. Not sure if it survives the first one. I should limit requests to one mb anyway. Http headers may officially not be more than 4096 in total) since I know http protocol from my head anyway. Python websockets module. Asyncio, chromadb.
It could have xss issues. Don't care.

I need a bit of help in getting some documents from my University, so I go into their site and they have a WhatsApp support number. Perfect, I think to myself. So I send them a message with my question and a fucking bot answers me with a list of categories for my question, none of them matching my question. So I answer the "Other" option and it just sends me a FAQ link. Like what the actual fuck? I contacted the fucking number because I need help from a damn human, not a fucking FAQ link you useless waste of server resources.2 -

Internal system sent me an email with a dead link, saying a certificate is due to expire. Couldn't find the tool, opened IM with help support and was greeted with a passive aggressive note:

What is everyone's opinion on the way the gaming industry is going, I mean with everything going for the 4K and all the shit that goes on between Console and PC gaming (I'm a console gamer).

Co-worker asked for a call and then when I replied "you can call when ready :) " the reply back is an all caps "IN A MIN"
I'm not the one asking for the call and I'm also not rushing you to have one.
To me all caps means shouting and it puzzles me because while typing it the other person can see it and previous that they aren't using all caps. Why continue using all caps if you aren't angry? 🤷

Why project manager use group chat to discuss an issue which is related only to one developer, meanwhile other getting messages and notifications which they have no idea and putting their attention something they have no business?
Sometime I did not read message cause I think they are not related to me then I get personal message please check group.
Now other team members are using group chat when they want to discuss something with manager.

I hate the new Teams. It's showing a distracting red icon in the activity bar when someone's sent a chat. Then, when clicking the chat icon in Teams you'd expect it to take me there so I could reset the chat and make it stop showing that irritating red notification in the activity bar. But NO, nothing happens when clicking the chat icon. Useless UX to say the least! This is one of the main reasons why I never use Teams for chatting, and I only open the application for meetings and then immediately shut it down. How come Microsoft, that's been around for so fucking long, still haven't learnt to design consistent, user-friendly and distraction-free applications? I think the answer is: They don't give a shit.4

I hate when people just say "Hello!" in messaging apps and don't tell me what they want. Just ask me the question please! I might be in meetings and after 1-2 hours come back, reply, leave for another meeting and come back and the person hasn't asked the question yet...

Built a pretty slick chat bot for my company’s conferences that used Google’s Dialogflow for natural language processing and conversation state
It worked from a web chat or SMS. Allowed manual responding by agents as well as the chat bot. Pulled dynamic answers through a 3rd party API integration
Most common questions “what is the wifi password” and “tell me a joke”
Project was killed after 2 conferences - thankfully it only took me a few weeks to build4 -

Been a while since I asked one of these questions, decided it's about time to bring them back, so what was everyones latest 'fuck it' moment, whether it was an 'ill do it myself' or a 'fuck this shit' moment...
Currently I am going through a fuck it moment, sick of complaining that GameMaker is not available on Linux, so I'm jumping head in and building an IDE that will hopefully use mono to run the GMS compiler... Despite me having barely any major knowledge in the language I'm using nor the knowledge to easily build a code editor on its own... -
I just got ghosted by a live chat support member... Guess they finally realized they are idiots.
This is what happens when you give me some incompetent generic support staff that not only doesn't know shit but contradicts his own statements as well.
Time to give them a call and hope they have some actual technical people how knows their stuff over there....1 -

For me it's chrome OS, taken a little hiatus from programming as it's been dragging my mental state down a bit so I've been focusing on writing my book and what programming I am doing is just me learning ground up java script development. Did GPT have an unfair advantage compared to every general Chat-AI that comes after?
I mean, chatGPT was trained with data mostly generated by real humans. Now, since chatGPT and GPT4 is released, it has become more difficult to tell the content from bot and a Human apart. This means future chat AI will probably also by trained with data from other AI. And since AI doesn't understand context, and therefore make more factual error, future chat AI will learn more and more wrong things (generated by previous AI versions).4 -

Hey i want to make a chat application for production workload with more than 100000 simultaneous connection and more than 1000000 daily active user which will scale 100 times in coming 1 to 2 years for Android. I have oauth based user authentication. This chat should be able to authenticate and verify authtoken generated using the oauth. What should i use? Xmpp, mqtt or something else. Can anyone who has worked on chat application help me.6

I hate it when you post about a problem you have on a programming live chat, wait 3 hours and get no response, and then someone else posts a different a problem and instantly gets help. What makes their problem more urgent than mine? And it's not that the people who are supposed to be helping don't know how to work with it, BECAUSE THEY'RE IN THE CHAT FOR JAVASCRIPT.

We used to have a dated VoIP/Chat client called Telepo. Then we moved to Uno Mjuk, which is not at all the improvement I was hoping for. What annoys me most is the automatic spell checker in chats. I hate spell checking while typing. Every jagged red edge makes my brain want to crawl out of my head. What makes it even worse, is that the spell checker is set to English while 100% of our chats are in Swedish, so like everything I type appears to be misspelled according to Uno Mjuk. There is no way to change langauge and the spell checker cannot even be disabled! What a piece of unbelievably useless crap!1

Have you ever tried to read your Facebook chat history all the way back when you were younger? What a horrible person I were! Those embarrassing teenage messages! There are things not worth remembering and it sucks that Facebook documented all the detail in your life and you can't do something about it on the other end.2

Using NaCl keys makes life so much easier but you have the choice of using PGP if you need to for encrypting files/text. -

I was tweaking with Flutter lately and pushed an app to the stores, the framework looks promising. So I wanted to do some contributions.
If you talk about create chat app with flutter, all you’ll find there is some firebase tutorials (Google is pushing it so hard).
I want an on-promise solution, so I used MQTT protocol to use it as chat protocol (with custom extension) and I created Flutter client for that. I am really happy for the concept, it shows some real strengths and could be a thing, so here I am sharing the repository here.

What is best equivalent to Slack? we switched to Rocket chat but UI is terrible, every one gets confused in channels when there is too many threads and replys. I need a free alternative which we can deploy its dedicated instance on our own server. also I prefer open source software with mobile support and better UI/UX than rocker chat.7

People not using FaaS (like aws lambda or azure functions ) to build chat bots (facebook, slack) but using express based (or any webserver based) application deserves a place in hell.
Can't think why would you use expressJS based app for chat bot. Especially with event emitter shit. At least for Lucifers sake document which event triggers what. Please. -
