Like 😡😠 websites don't have business hours! Servers don't need nights or weekends off!! It's ridiculous to think that someone had to code this block for these hours, more effort than just leaving it always available.

this class has been an absolute tragedy. he spends about 1 hr each class trying to figure out how to configure docker... FOR A PROJECT THAT IS JUST BARE HTML CSS JS. WHY??? he is so adamant that we use DOCKER for this class. I don't understand why.

most of the students are BRAND NEW to front end development and know Jack shit. and here this professor is insisting on nuancing the class with docker. it makes absolutely no sense.

Lucked into an internship that was structured enough to learn but laid back enough to have freedom to learn on my own my way. And it included programming
Semester after had a python elective. Was ahead of everyone due to my internship so teacher let me do what I want to if I help other students so I just experimented with stuff

Few months after high school I dropped out of one college after a gap year I ended up in an associates in programming program at another college. Graduated July 2020

I feel I'm doing alright for myself most of the time

This year I could join the "Game Graphics" for my elective classes. After seeing that we are split almost exactly in half (graphics design and programmers) our tutor (graphic with 20+ exp in the field, worked on few Call of Duty titles and more) decided that instead of forcing everyone to draw something, we will be making games in groups.

So me, and my friend were grouped with two girls from graphic. I have to say, working close with them was an eyes-opening experience. They don't think like me, they don't see like me and they interpret everything different.

Anyway, as most experienced Unity dev (... Yeaaaah, one game self made and published) I was chosen to get rest of the programmers up to speed. Luckily no one objected and they did what I wanted them to do, so it wasn't bad.

Today was supposedly the last day to present finished prototype. After three weeks staying up till 1 am, working on this project, two other, and nornal job, it was supposed to end. But, no one was really ready. So tutor decided that we will only do this project, an 2D platformer, instead of two, this and 3D game.

While walking around and checking the progress he stayed with us at least two times, watching what we were doing. Since last two weeks were really hectic, we were finishing up animations, adding some polish and such. When he came to us for the second time, he played our prototype. He's a bit older guy, somewhere around his 60, and one could see he wasn't prepared for hard gameplay I presented him with my first level design ever.

He told us his feedback, about how hard it is and not really intuitive, but in the end, he was satisfied. We have made really great progress and brought him something he could play and finish. Which was more than most of other groups had at today. And, as a cherry on the top, he complimented me as a group chief. I don't remember the last time someone complimented my work. The feeling was... Incredible. Touching even.

So, yeah. My hard work wasn't in vain, even though we now have time till the end of the semester. Everyone in my team has given their all and now we can rest for a bit, while others are catching up. Right now I only have to polish some mechanics, rework a bit of level design and add tutorial, while girls from graphic design will be working on better background and sprites.

All in all, it was a pretty good day.

I had to give a presentation to my industrial design lecturer and he complimented me (me, the computer science student doing an elective) on the visuals of my presentation 😄

Funnily enough my initial experience with Java at uni dampened my enthusiasm for programming I had harboured as a kid. Discontinued the course and studied something else. Cue three years later; took an elective programming in C and some other coding subjects and fell in love with coding. Ended up writing code for my bachelor thesis, lots of free time coding, teaching the elective I had taken only a year before, and now it's my job and I love it. :)

Well I was in school for web development I chose to take the elective course intro to web as an easy online class. And almost failed an assignment for using css3 for rounded corners and shadowing all because it did not pass validation because it was not standard yet. Shows how little that teacher knew about the industry...... Face palm

When you got to get through the swarm of elective classes to get to the meat of the bones in a Software Development degree 😤

How many times do we need to take Math in order to get across that we only use like 1/4 of what is actually thought and apply it to IRL scenarios?!

I want to be able to learn how to program as of now but there's no good courses online that I can actually interact with and my programming elective starts next semester in school. So unless one of you Devs can give a good suggestion, I'm basically sitting here playing with the commands I do know in my Linux terminal.

Idk why but this morning I was thinking about this high school elective class where we learned Adobe flash. But specifically 2 instances where I ignored the teacher and did my own thing

1. We were using Sprite sheets and he had us use photoshop to cut out the Sprite to a different layer and manually save each Sprite one by one to disk to use in flash. Some sheets had 50 fucking sprites
So I found a script for Adobe (action script I think they called their Javascript derivative) that exported every layer for me without all the manual clicking. There is probably an even better way. But this worked for how lazy I was back then

2. Our final projects we could do anything but he suggested not doing anything too complicated cause of time constraints and he barely taught is the scrptinh language for Adobe flash so making flash games was almost out of the question.
Me being stupid really wanted to make a working pong game. So I spent too long watching a German (i dont know German) tutorial video I found, and troubleshooting outdated code from that video. And improving things where I could with my limited knowledge made worse cause I wasn't interested in programming and didn't start learning python until the following year

Yeah don't know why I was thinking about those. But I feel it's a good perspective on how far I've come. From hacking together a pong clone with no skills, to being hired to automate and optimize processes and legacy projects

I would like your opinion on this fellow devranters. Right now at my university I have to pick an elective. My options are AI, Cloud Computing and the .Net framework. I'm leaning towards AI and also considering taking both AI and Cloud computing (if they'll allow me). What do you think I should pick career-wise?

I am considering which CS elective to register for this coming semester, and I am not happy with many of the choices. Basically, I can choose between Android programming, a web programming class in the grad school, and maybe Linear Algebra for CS majors class. I am trying to figure out what is worthwhile to take in college, and what I can learn on my own. Advisor thinks I should take a web class, because it's important to know, but I am not too into web and I feel like I can just learn that on my own. I would rather take a class that will help me understand how things work, rather than just how to use a specific technology. What do you guys think?

Well not really a CS teacher but it did happen to me during my uni days.

I had joined a marketing class as an elective since my Information Systems degree did have some business related stuff thrown in there.

One day the lecturer strutted in all smug and told us to take out a sheet of paper and we were gonna have a surprise test.

He has the test on a pen drive , apparently it was just 2 open ended type questions he was gonna plug into the class pc and send it to the projector screen.

To this day i have no clue what the hell he did, but that smug bastard managed to delete the test permanently 😂

He popped it in and we saw a few files there he selected them and was about to either drag to desktop or open them , the cursor changed to the wait hourglass , he right clicked and refreshed as if it would
Do anything but .... PooF.... Bye test 👋

He took the pen drive out and plugged it in again, but couldn't find the test file

He scowled then checked the desktop and recycle bin, nope 👎

He took his pen drive and silently walked out....

The other IT students and I were in stitches 😂

Going to be a Senior next semester and ill be taking a software testing course as an elective. From a student perspective, it sounds pretty important. Nevertheless Im excited to jump in to a simulation of real world application of what Ive learned so far in college.

I like to look back at what I considered 'programming' back in high school compared to what I'm doing now as a almost CP college graduate

Still know absolutely nothing. But that's immensely more than what I did as the best student in my high school programming elective and the barely accomplishments i achieved as a high school intern at CMU

I still have a copy of some my old high school 'code' (more like data trash)on a flash drive just for memory's sake

Need an advice..We have to select a department elective this sem..What would you guys recommend...I am inclined towards Python and Linux internals but we have to choose only one. From the Department Elective 1.
I could also opt for something else other than these two.

Have opted for Big Data and analytics this sem as Dept. elective. Can't understand anything in the lectures(as usual). Any suggestions how to start learning?(books, tutorials, courses, etc.)
