AAARGH ELECTRON IS SO FUCKING...decently pleasant to use?
So I've been working on a FPGA based synthesizer on a Xilinx Arty A7 board (that little Artix 35T chip is surprisingly capable), and since I hate typing commands into a serial stream for anything even decently complex just like any sane person should, I needed something to build a UI for controlling it and other synth projects while I make the Eurorack compatible enclosure and knobs and stuff. I chose Electron because they said it was simple and easy to make cool looking stuff, fast.
And they were right. In like two hours, with Electron and p5.js, starting from zero since I don't know jack about frontend, I had a pretty nice UI driving the hardware synth and effects modules. Not bad. I should use this more often.11 -
While coding in C, I once forgot to add a semicolon at the end of a while loop polling a register value.
The logic required me to make it zero as soon as it read non-zero and continue the rest of the process. Hence the 'while' that missed the semicolon ended up being a single instruction assignment to the same volatile register that I kept polling. This caused synchronisation issue with the FPGA, and my code got stuck in an uncertain infinite loop.
Took me 2 days and a silly, yet valid question from my teammate to figure out the cause of this stupid bug.8 -
My mind was blown when I found out AWS offers FPGA instances (EC2 instances)
how fucking cool is that?5 -
I have to share this. These guys are unbelievable! They claim they will build this console that will run a modded Debian Linux. Ok so far...
But then they say that it will run Windows games...
Wine you may think?!
NOOOO.
They say they will make a 'revolutionary' motherboard, that will RUN WINDOWS GAMES (?!?!?), WITHOUT WINDOWS!!!! And they will do this by putting a fucking FPGA chip on the board!!! That will INTERPRET .EXE FILES (IN HARDWARE LEVEL!!!)
They must be gods to run an .exe file using nothing but (V)HDL without the shared libraries and at hardware level!
FUCK! I'M MAD!!!
Scammers gonna scam!

We are 1 week from first system demo of a down well seismic system. All the SW to run on the sensor nodes inside the well pipe has been developed with driver mockups since the FPGA team hasn't finished their part yet. So, integration, integration testing, system test and bug fix must be done in a hurry! Does this scenario sound familiar?3

Me and a couple of friends have this group on WhatsApp where we can share stuff that we do and maybe come up with new stuff to work on as well.
For giggles (honestly irritating to me) I'm gonna summarize some conversations on the group.
26/11
Me: Finally completed my first FPGA program, these devices are amazjng!

Me: gonna make the Jacobs ladder thing today! Hope I don't get zapped
Anyone interested ?

Me: hey here's a nice electronic circuit, try to analyze how this circuit oscillates (we're all ec 'engineers' well... soon at least)

Friend: Guys creed 2 was amazing I don't mind watching it twice
F2 : Really? Why don't we go soon?
F3 : I'm in!!! What's the plan
F4 : how about tomorrow ?
....
3/12
F1 : Guys anyone have notes for X exam
F2 : here. {Link}
F3 : here. {Link}
F4 : how many of you are done ?
F5 : what are the important questions
(just a stupid aptitude test)
{Me} changes group title from X to Notes group
Let's give this another shot
6/12
Me: There's a conference on X technology by Y industry leader ..
Should we check it out ?
There's even a workshop on X

Alright time to acknowledge my stupidity and my lack of brains for even belonging to this kind of social circle/COUNTRY
7/12
ME: New fortnite season is out
F1: woah it's crazy let's play
F2: already on it, client is updating
F3: are you shitting me? gonna get BROS laptop (i'm going to suck my brothers cock and take his computer)
F4: Hang on bro wait for me also call me on discord.
I hope you guys could stick through that. Well there's no crazy moral to this but if you're one of these guys just appreciate your friend for his efforts once in a while even at the cost of acknowledging your stupidity.
Also, words like BRO are instant triggers and I'll make sure I find you can kill you if you use it more than once every couple of sentences ( I have relatively high tolerance )1 -
Xilinx documentsation sucks balls.
I never expected interacting with fpga to be such a pain in the ass.1 -
i made projects in Verilog HDL for fpga and stuff for the past few months in uni and did not get time for projects in languages like c or python.
now my dumb brain can't think in a normal programming language when I'm switching back to C.
P.S. if you didn't know verilog, it works a little different from normal programming languages. everything in Verilog runs parallelly.4 -
My laptop have been in warranty service for nearly a month, I have an FPGA project, a mobile app to make using ionic framework, to make a DSP compare two images and recently someone wants me to make a him a website.
And I actually have just very basic knowledge about these stuff, I've only made an desktop app once, and it just takes numbers gives back numbers.
I never wanted this, leave on my own, stop overrating my searching skills !
And all of that by the end of this semester. Fuck you people. -
Lately I am working using icestorm!
I know very few people know it, mainly beacuse not a lot of us works with FPGAs.
It is foundamental for the open source scene because is the only FOSS that gives you the ability to "compile" for FPGAs, otherwise you would have to use some proprietary tool.
People are building lot of things on top of that, and I hope more people start workin with FPGAs: dealing with them is still quite hard, especially if compared with MCU programming.
I am sure that in very few years we will see something very interesting in that field.4 -
CSS is like a deterministic FPGA language; you describe a loop-free dataflow diagram and then switch to a different one to cycle data around.

This gives me an idea -
Im going to my first internship interview as computer engineering tomorrow. it's a consulting company that works with FPGA development, im nervous because I would really like to work with it!
Q: are there some tips on interviews with smaller development companies? What are they looking for in a developer? What should I research beforehand?2 -
what is the best work flow for FPGA based design using vivado tools
1. a i3- 9th gen Linux box running vivado, and i vnc to it using my main computer
Or
2. Or just get a good main machine and run vivado in VM
I am up for 2 days now trying to get vivado up in VM running ubuntu 12.04 /xfce4 it shouldn’t be this hard !!12
