Got call from extremely angry customer, our product is shit and doesn't work. At all. Important customer so I went to visit.
He had the perfect setup, our product to the left, our competitor's to the right.
He connected the Ethernet cable to their product, it worked. He plugged it out and connected to ours... Nothing. Shit.
I started to debug on the premises, took logs, everything. It seemed like our product didn't receive any data at all. What the fuck? Tried everything, debugged low level, still nothing. Sweating as hell.
After two hours I got a strange feeling. So I swapped place, our product to the right, competitor's to the left. Now OUR product worked, competitor's zilch.
THE FUCKING ETHERNET CABLE HAD A GLITCH. IF YOU BENT IT TO THE RIGHT IT WORKED, IF YOU BENT IT TO THE LEFT IT WAS BROKEN.
I had never seen a customer be this embarrassed in my life. He apologized to me, my boss, his boss, the Queen, everyone.
We got the contract.20 -
I used to work with a guy who had 2 PH.Ds, in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and over 600 patents but I kid you not the guy could not use the coffee machine. Now it's not like this coffee machine was as easy as a Keurig, it was some $20,000 espresso machine that took a while to figure out but I tried teaching him how to use it a few dozen times and still he couldn't get it right. It got to the point where I thought he was faking it so that others would make it for him so I offered him $500 if he could figure it out. Still nope. So for the remaining 2 years we worked together I made him coffee whenever he wanted, 2-4 times a day, and he bought me lunch everyday. Before I left the company I bought him a Keurig so that when I left he'd still have coffee.19

Holy mother of god, 100K!
Honestly what happened? Upvote sprees or something?!
I left devRant with 95K this morning 😱
I'll do a bigger rant later, just came out of work, most of the day went well but last hour was more stressful than anything so gonna go home (have a coffee on the way) now and prepare an emergency security blog article (something happened in the security/spy world).
Thanks peoples!24 -
More like the most obvious thing I accidentally left OUT of an application without thinking about it.
"application seems advanced/cool/working! Oh by the way how do I log out?"
😐😮😧😅😰😭16 -
This is an old rant from over 10 years ago in my first job at 19. I was tasked with turning off one of our clients email because they had left the company. Easy enough, logged into cPanel, job done. Later that day I get a phone call from the clients company asking if there was a problem with the email. No I said, everything should be fine, I did remove a 'joe.bloggs@blah.com' email address as instructed because... *reading job bag*... they had left the company. The client then said, that's my email you've turned off and hung up. Turned out he had been fired and no one told him. I felt horrible. I will always remember that conversation 😓8

Got into the monday tech meeting, CTO be like: we lost 10% of users due to last version, terrible I know, but that's really valuable data, I want you to find out why they left.3

Just found out my house's heating system relies on this. A button, being held down by a bolt held by a zip tie. Who in their right mind looked at this, was like "this is fine" and left it there.
My dad, apparently.10 -
This is how my day has gone so far:
1. In car, see advert about hackathon
2. Look it up, see tickets go on sale in 30mins
3. Read more about hackathon, apparently tickets go within minutes
4. Get tickets, print
5. Printer out of ink
6. Accidentally deleted ticket, can't reprint
7. No more tickets left so can't get another
8. Spend hours with data recovery tools
9. Remember recycle bin. Reprint ticket
10. Cry
11. Rant on devRant11 -
So I was looking at the linux environment at my new job. Found 2 VM's in the local network, only one of them is documented. Noone knows about the other one or what it does, let alone usernames and passwords.
Spent over an hour trying to break in, only to find out that a couple of bored devs, that have long since left the company, set up a game server on there and noone noticed it for the past 3 years..5 -
Teacher : The world is fast moving, you should learn all the new things in technology. If not you'll be left behind. Try to learn about Cloud, AI, ML, Block chain, Angular, Vue, blah blah blah.....

I was hired to build a small PHP site. The client was arrested and sentenced to jail time right before the third of four milestones was complete, so I didn't get paid any more after that. Didn't hear from him for over a year, then out of nowhere he wanted to pick up where we left off.5

Just went skydiving. Realized I probably should have left behind all my clients' site admin passwords in case my chute didn't open. Turns out I'm still alive so no harm done.8

The network starts slowing down, transactions start to fail across the 450+ stores, the website starts to spit 500 errors what is going on?
Queue a frantic running around the office working out what was going wrong... Calls from all 3 data centres, nothing is going in or out of the network.
Notice the network admin come back to his desk, his eyebrows raise and he looks left and right before unplugging his laptop ethernet from one of the server access points
The network rushes back to life, everything is fine.
That particular network mapping tool is now banned for use on production.10 -
My lead developer left on vacation for a week. Without notice to my boss and/or myself.
Well to be fair we did have the minimum which is a 2 day notice....
So what did we do? Well the boss and I acted like absolute adults and did what any other adult would do.
Me sticky noted the fuck out of his desk and screens.
4 screens full of sticky notes.
Phone is full of sticky notes too. And geez man....everything is sticky notes....so...many....sitcky...notes9 -
Every day in the office kitchen I find bottles of milk open and left out, in the fridge with no date, and empties everywhere. Yesterday I found 11 open and partially used bottles of milk. I’ve designed this flow chart to help educate people (in a way developers can understand) on how to manage milk which is apparently a real challenge for some.10

Fuck YOU Xcode!
20 crashes since I started working this morning.
Restarted the iMac, same shit.
Cleared NVRAM/PRAM whatever its called, same shit.
Closed EVERYTHING, restarted iMac again, unplugged from the wall, left it few mins, replugged back, turned it on, continued working, AND IT STILL KEEPS FUCKING ME OUT OF NOWHERE.

The girl I loved for four years left me four months ago. It has been the most painful four months of my life and I struggled through the initial days. Both my health and my productivity suffered.
But I feel better now. Trying my best to keep moving forward and stay positive. Realised that shit happens and we can't just sudo our way out of everything.
Just wanted to share. Thank you for reading this far.11 -
A guy that just did not know how to code. He had years and years of experience (?), but DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE. He was given a simple task, spent weeks on it and what came out was usually 60 lines of "if, elseif, elsif....else".
He was given several warnings, and eventually "voluntarily" left the company.
I still get screenshots of his code sent by one of my ex-colleagues who's still there when he stumbles across it.15 -
It's a perfect chronological sequence from left to right:

About 6 years ago, my boss found out about social media and how he could use it to boost his business. So he created a Facebook page.
A week later he called me to his office and asked me to move the page's profile picture from left to right. I told him this was not possible and was something Facebook doesn't allow us to do.
Next thing I know he started telling me to check and try before I say no, and should never say no as anything was possible.
Obviously, I quit.2 -

school takes the creativity out of programming.
you want to try something new?
sorry, can't have that. functionality = priority.
school takes the choice out of programming.
- you're gonna use x language
- with x api
- in x environment
- and make it in x way
- because if you don't, your gonna fail x assignments
- because programming is about getting the job done, with no creativity
yeah fuck you too
school takes the cleverness out of programming
you get a turn left function. it turns a 'turtle' left any amount of degrees that you pass it, you have to make a turn right function to turn right 90 degrees. well, if you thought turning left -90 degrees was a good idea to make a turn right function, then fuck you. you have to turn left three timeswith the default 90 degrees instead because it's more practical/logical.
fuck that.
anyone else hate the movements to get programming into schools?10 -

Today I was asked to decide on a handheld or "madonna" microphone for a conference I have to speak at in 2 weeks. Its time to come clean, I never thought the day would actually come, i'm far too terrified to actually go through with it. I just wanna write code in my dark little corner and be left alone. I wonder can I get out of this or is it too late4
-
Firefox: click on the address bar and now you can select something or start typing or move the cursor left/right, works great.
Chromium (because fuck chrome):click in the address bar and THE ENTIRE URL GETS/BECOMES SELECTED. Wanna type something? Sure, go ahead, but FIRST click somewhere else or move the cursor because otherwise the entire url is fucking gone.
Maybe there's a way to disable this behavior but boy does it annoy the living fuck out of me!14 -
The company got a new office just in time for the "company summit".
I checked out the address on Google maps. It's a cinderblock building with the number spraypainted on the side, a battered cyclone fence in front, a cyclone gate off to the right side (apparently falling off) leading to a random battered shed, and immediately on the left is a dental office with bars on the windows. Also, the fence has spikes on top.
I'm terrified.rant i don't want to go i'm actually a little scared everything else and this too i'm going to finish my feature and quit what the hell scary11 -
First they came for the atheists, and I didn't speak out - because I'm not an atheist
Then they came for the university teachers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't like universities
Then they came for the gamers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't play videogames
Then they came for Open Source and I didn't speak out - because "anyone can fork it"
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me
I know I butchered the poem and I'm not comparing our social situation to the Holocaust (obviously), but I think it kind of illustrates that silence and gradually giving up ideals like justice and meritocracy can end up badly.
I also encourage you to read the actual poem it's pretty nice and food for thought.5 -
*The interview wasn't off to a good start, as the recruiter forgot he invited me for an interview, so he just led me to some empty office after letting me wait for good 15 minutes. *
Them: Here, write some pseudocode to find a value in a tree.
Me (thinking): Interesting question; DFS / BFS would be really simple here, but nobody uses trees for that - perhaps I should ask about characteristics of the tree in question?
But before I realised, the interviewer already rushed out the office, so I just picked up my jacket and left... -
After a company Christmas dinner, some employees went to a bar together. One colleague was so drunk that he felt from his chair. We lifted him back up again, but left him under the table after the third time.
However, he came back on his own, having his dong hanging out, and left a puddle below the table.
So we walked the colleague through the entire town to get him back to the hotel.
When we arrived there, the guy mopping the hotel lobby was able to tell us his room number within a second after noticing us. -

In my Software Engineering II class, our teacher begins a overview of NoSQL DBs. A buddy of mine leans over and asks me "A SQL DB walks into a NoSQL bar, do you know why he left?"
I said, "No idea".
He said, "Because there were no tables".
Our teacher heard me laugh, so my buddy had to explain the joke to the entire class. Needless to say, the whole class got a kick out of it! -

The only technique I know.
Get hired straight out of uni. Project architect disappears right at beginning and I am left as a graduate employee to build a travel booking web app. Learning new front end and backend frameworks by coding them constantly for the next 8 months.
We might actually get this project done!5 -
i once had a manager that would fuss at every little detail.
front end had to be pixel perfect on every freaking device he could find and the backend being over documented that one liners needed a bloody comment.
//is it true?
if( true ) {
}
anything needing more then 5-10 minutes to work out required several meetings to discuss every tiny aspect in detail.
drove me insane and glad i left!2 -
Refactoring code of somebody who left and:
- Plagued the code with TYPOS (milions of them but ok I can live with those... to a certain point)
- Used global variables by default.... of course even where they're not needed
- Used comments only in parts of code where... well they're not needed, important ones are of course left out
- Did not indent code. 3..2..1... Did not FUCKING indent code properly and when he did... did WRONG!
- Instead of indentation he used commented line with multiple ==== signes.... so far top is 60 consecutive lines with olny ==== again no apparent pattern here
- Did not follow a fucking standard in variable naming... no camle casing... there are varaibles assigned multiple times to "temp" variables without no reason just for the sake of wasting resources on the system I guess
This is just the beginning of the review but I already want to change job, die, scream, cry... not in any specific order.10 -
I just had to print out some bills for a colleague.
Nothing too bad you say?
Well.. She doesn't seem to care about security or privacy at all.
I opened the website of her email provider at my computer and moved away from the keyboard, so she could log in.
But instead she told me her email and password... In an office with some other colleagues... Multiple times and wrote it onto a piece of paper that the later left on my table.
After that I should look through her inbox to find the bills.
(Yup, I know a lot more about her now)
After finding and printing out her bills, she just thanked me and walked out of the office, because hey, why should I log out of her account?
It's nice that she trusts me... But that was a bit too much...4 -
I'm working with a customer named Clint.
I realize now that over numerous tickets I started mistyping his name... just every god damn time.
Guess what letter I left out?
Nice guy for not correcting me ... extra fast ticket response for him now.6 -
Fix a million things, including a project that is suddenly urgent, feels tired but satisfied, ready to go home...then it turns out there's still 4 hours of the day left...

Before I left for vacation two weeks ago, I busted my butt to build out another portion of my frontend testing framework and get it in place (and spec’d) to unblock a coworker on a semi-high-priority ticket. I sent him detailed notes on which areas of the product it covers, how to use it, and copied one of his (blocked) tests over and updated it to use the new methods, pattern, namespacing, etc.
I came back today and discovered … he hasn’t even touched it. Everything is exactly as I left it.
Wheeeeeee.12 -
Stare at the screen blankly, regretting your life choice to become a dev, cry, start researching mcdonalds job ads. Then end up spending 3 hours on devRant falling in love with programming again and then realising you have just wasted 3+ hours on a left out curly bracket...5

Maybe this is my retribution for participating in yesterday's rant about public transportation.
Saturday morning, I had an 🥚and 🍌. I was happy.
I went out to meet with my GF.
I got a window seat on bus.
The seat on my left was empty for few stops.
A mudafucka big kid came and sit beside me.
I was like, cool, heyyo kid. Not some greasy old dudes or ready to slap chicks.
Oh boy can I be wronger?
The mudafucka big kid started with right butt scratch using right hand.
Then followed up by left butt scratch with left hand.
And then did a wiggly body scratching using his seat like an alien snake.
I got itchy looking at him.
Also I said big two times because he spread his big thighs so wide it took 1/3 of my seat.
And now playing loud ass games on his phone.
Not a good sign for my Saturday.1 -
I was going to an interview and they kept me waiting for more than 1 hour without a notice. When the interviewer came, she didn't even apologize and gave me a form to fill out. I left the building and didn't come back. Did I did wrong? What would you do?14

We were in a college group. Five people. Making project in PHP. Some forced us to use cakePHP framework than left. One guy decided to not participate and decited to do it next year. One guy didn't know PHP at all. The two of us have to do all the work for five people.
On the presentation day we have ten minutes to do it. Guy without PHP knowledge forget password for our app, make three wrong guesses and locked us out of our app for five minutes.2 -

Got laid off last week with the rest of the dev team, except one full stack Laravel dev. Investors money drying up, and the clowns can't figure out how to sell what we have.
I was all of devops and cloud infra. Had a nice k8s cluster, all terraform and gitops. The only dev left is being asked to migrate all of it to Laravel forge. 7 ML microservices, monolith web app, hashicorp vault, perfect, mlflow, kubecost, rancher, some other random services.
The genius asked the dev to move everything to a single aws account and deploy publicly with Laravel forge... While adding more features. The VP of engineering just finished his 3 year plan for the 5 months of runway they have left.
I already have another job offer for 50k more a year. I'm out of here!13 -
My dev mates are all gone for Xmas

First, they came for those who Open Source'd code.
And I did not speak out, because my code could never be used by anyone out of the company, anyway.
Then, they came for the Trade Unionists.
And I did not speak out, because I was not in a union.
Then, they came for those who worked from home.
And I did not speak out, because I was granted an exception.
Then, they came for Scrum Masters and other Agile practitioners.
And I did not speak out, because fuck those spreadsheet jockeys productivity thespians.
Then, they came for in-house Data Analysts and Data Engineers.
And there was no one left to speak out for us.
Yeah, folks. The day finally came. I'm officially updating my LinkedIn and putting a ridiculous sash under my picture, "open to work". The Layoffs came for me, too.6 -

Scariest thing I've ever experienced...

A certain, reasonably sized company had a large in house payment system to handle all their client purchases that was developed many, many years ago. All the devs that developed it had left, and as it "just worked" they hadn't seen fit to get anyone to update or maintain it since.
That was all fine until it suddenly (and completely) stopped working one sunny afternoon.
After paying a small fortune for one of the original devs to come back and look at it, turns out the payment API it was based on had been retired. Warnings of deprecation had been sent out 18 months prior, but they had just been ignored, as the secretary receiving them after the devs left had no idea what it meant.6 -
While testing on IE11 today I noticed a smiley face in the upper left corner that brings up a context menu with the options "Send a smile" and "Send a frown".
Turns out that is how you send browser feedback on IE11, the frown being the ability to report a site, and the smile to give positive feedback on the browser.
Turns out you can't send negative feedback for the browser, so I sent positive feedback. What did it say?
"What did you like?"

Most awkward recruiter interaction was probably when I had to tell a staffing agency that I didn't want to work for them because I had already worked for them and left.
I got into IT by working for a staffing agency and I was contracted out to a large company's IT call center. Doing the usual sort of level-one tech support stuff. After my contract term ran out (and upon reminding my boss that she wouldn't be my boss for much longer if she didn't hire me away from the staffing agency), I was hired on full-time.
Six months later I left the call center and moved on to a cloud server development job in the same company. Not long after that, I got a message on LinkedIn from the staffing agency, offering to hire me on as a contractor working for one of their largest partners in the area.
I responded asking for more details, just for fun. The company I'd be working for, etc. Then I had to inform them that I had in fact previously worked for their firm, and now worked at the company that they were offering to contract me out to, and earning a fair bit more money than they were offering.
They didn't even look at my employment information on LinkedIn before sending the InMail. Just glanced over my skills, saw the magic buzzword "devops," and sent me a message.3 -
I was just a junior developer, and the senior interviewer had just left for a quick break.
And, I had to interview one dude for the post of Web Designer (we were not asking for experienced devs). And, then he comes up, opens his laptop, goes to a folder and opens an html file that turns out nothing but a "Save Page as.." of one News Website. Seriously, I just said nothing, asked him a bunch of questions and off he goes. I could not stop laughing later.2 -
VSCode, the only thing I hate about this is, it becomes too lag after I left it too long. Probably because of the vin extension, I typed something and it only came out 1/2 seconds and I have to restart my laptop 😭7

I'm fairly new as an engineer (less than a year of experience in industry), and I'm happy that I get so much constructive feedback in my code reviews. However, sometimes I come out of them feeling like absolute trash. The review I had yesterday highlighted my lack of experience with API development, and I left the meeting feeling like I didn't even deserve to work here.
I'm trying to take everything as a learning opportunity, and grow as an engineer... But sometimes it is hard to see myself improving.7 -
When your Tesla’s battery fails, because they cut costs, you are hit with a high-pressure, thick stream of chemical hellfire spanning your entire car’s interior space. It will burn you to a crisp in 30 seconds. Because of all those “aUtOmAtIoNs”, door-opening mechanism will also fail. There is no way you’ll get out.
After 30 seconds, there will be no one left to rescue. After two minutes, there will be nothing left to bury.
There is no way a fire squad could extinguish this. That’s a battery fire. If you remember your chem class, you know lithium burns violently underwater.
You’re gonna die. Elon won’t be responsible, as usual. No one will face any consequences.
But damn, what’s an epic bacon hyperloop tech way to go out, isn't it.15 -
Let’s see I suppose the most pissed off I’ve been at work would be....
Being blamed for a clients mistake when their newsletter email settings where being changed over to a new mailing system but during the change over they wanted to still send out mail using the old list. So a single endpoint was kept in place so they could send one last newsletter out after it was approved as part of the migration and they were to inform us when they were done so we could change that endpoint over.
Several months later when everyone had long forgotten about it, the client tried to send another mass mail out using the old endpoint and complained when no emails had been sent.
I was blamed for making this mistake even though management approved the fucking old endpoint to be left in place at the clients request against my concerns that someone’s going to forgot about this and I was never informed to swap it over.
I quit on the spot and walked out the door after that. -
Slack, my boss and I:
Me: Lucky I left when I did, I'll get through that fix when I'm less 🤢
Boss: Don't worry, take care of Harold now
Boss: If that's what we're calling the parasite
I recently found out I have a parasite, which I brought from India, living in my intestine. I'm on antibiotics. We're three devs at a startup running two products and on a shoestring... so Harold and I get our assets to office.10 -
So I'm sitting on the toilet in my work, wondering how much time is left till I beat the specific impulse of a Raptor engine, and all of sudden the emergency allarms go off.
Weighting my options now: die in a fire or some kind of explosion, or go downstairs without ending *the thing*.
Dying Lannister-way or going out of the building and meeting my colleagues, with a very weird smile on my face.
...
I think I just discovered new levels of fast when it comes to using toilet paper.3 -

I thought I'd always be a die-hard proponent of working from home; it can be great for the right person: and I thought that would be me; but with the family I have? It's turning into a disaster. They're too used to having me around, my wife is becoming too used to making arrangements that involve me taking an hour or two out of the day here and there; she doesn't know the impact of context switching in the middle of the day. If I refuse to help her out, that makes me the asshole. Then I get ratty because I feel the stress of being unproductive, and guess whose fault it is again? Mine. The kids rush in and out of my work area, or get upset when I come out for a coffee and don't want to spend time with them, but it's not their fault, at 2 and 4 they don't understand. Take me back to the fucking office, I'm done.
I just want to work. How hard is the concept of being left the fuck alone.9 -
I was hired to do a massive project as a temp. I got part way done and they hired me full time to finish. Then I moved to putting out production fires for unrelated systems until I left.2

Using circuit simulator (can find it on itch.io) and recently built an 8bit adder as you can see below.
Pins on left are IN and pins on right are OUT.
Just wanted to run it by some of you because 1. circuit simulator is fucking cool, 2. I'm not sure if I got the basics correct.
I attached an imagine of the 8bit adder along with the subcircuits if that interests you.7 -
So it would seem that Chrome no longer goes back a page when I press the backspace button.
In some ways it nice, as when i'm typing anything important I won't accidentally backspace myself out of the text.
On the other hand, now I have to reteach myself that Alt + Left Arrow is the only way now4 -

Soo, my GF who I moved to Germany for wrote that we needed to talk on Friday (today is Monday).
I was away for the weekend, and yester I asked what I could expect when I got home.
She wrote that we could hug, but not kiss...
One short phonecall later, she had broken up...
So now I will have to figure out what I will do... I don't have a home anymore (moved into her apartment), my job sucks, so nothing left...

I came back to work after a two week vacation to find out that some people left the company and others are leaving soon.

One day, I was waiting for a friend to install windows... after 2h he just says: ah, I'll just take it home and wait it out there!
So, he put his laptop in his bag (btw the usb stick was sticking out) and left it there.
Just as he stepped away from the bag, the bag just decided to fall down and exactly on the usb... and ofc it broke down...
The face he made I'll never forget.1 -
I FUCKING HATE when windows 10 reboot without my permission, i left stuff compiling in vmware and now i found out that it rebooted fuck you Microsoft37

So today I arrived on Ireland to hike for three weeks. Tomorrow I'm heading out together with one single other scout to walk 160 km from point A to point B, both of which are unknown until the minute we start. I'm not quite sure how much internet coverage I'll have, so perhaps there won't be so much ranting, commenting and ++'ing. Sad to leave for almost a month with just a couple of hundred ++'s left to reach the magic 5 digit score. Well, anyways. Unless I appear earlier, have a nice few weeks!5

So went to Starbuck to get a frappaccino then I realised I forgot to commit my project. I whipped out my mbp to fire that shit off. It was at that moment I realised ouuuh fuuckkk I'm one of those people now 😐 needless to say I bowed my head in shame and left without making eye contact with anyone....7

Me: Boss you told me to come and talk to you regarding my performance on Monday but you went on leave.
Boss: I said that out of frustration. I forgot that you have already resigned so no use saying anything to you.

Working on my Google Foo Bar level 4 challenge.
9 days past figuring out how to solve this problem..
And finally reached on a working solution. When started compiling my solution.
And then i Find out, the fucking Google tool is facing some bug and not allowing compilation. Tried hard to do everything but still getting errors...
And after searching on Google just found I'm fucked up.. It's on Google's end and they are not fixing it since so many days..
Just 5 days left to complete.. And i have no idea what should i do...

Leaving my current company for another opportunity. Boss has been working remote for almost a week now. When he shows up at the office, behaves like I don't exist anymore. Throwing in comments like "let's hire this guy, he's got some actual AI experience and not some academic bulls**t" while making sure I definitely hear them. His childish behavior leaves me wondering here what he thinks he'll achieve with it. At least makes me to look forward to get out of here. Oh well... Only couple of weeks left to put up with this.1

For the passed couple of years I've struggled with depression. This passed year has been so much better. I found a career path I enjoy, I learned a lot about myself, and I got a full time job.
I live with my grandparents and God bless their souls but I really want to move out. This realization really came last week when they left for a vacation and left me home alone. I've already lived away from home, volunteer work, internships. But now that I'm back home I'm bored, I have no responsibilities. I should also mention that I can't be myself around them, partly because I no longer believe in their God and partly because there never really was any transition between child and adult.
I talked it over with some older friends and they agreed that I should move out and offered some regally good advice.
I'm gonna wait until they get back and attempt to talk about it with them. I mean it's more of me telling them I'm moving out they can't really stop me at this point.
Anyway just wanted to get this off my chest. Hope you have a wonderful day.1 -
I was about sign-out and collegue comes running that something is urgent and can't wait till next day.
I said fuck off to his face and told him to go and resume his tik-tok video. I signed out and left office. Next day he reported me to HR. Disciplinary action will taken against me starting next week.
Awesome 😎4 -
My tech lead (or senior). I had been unmotivated with my dev life until I joined their team. He lit the fire in me by inspiring me and challenging me with my work. Sadly he left the team after 3 months but I'm thankful because he saved me from burn out.2

Me: hey backend, I'd like you to make three external API calls and a system call, then based on the result can you sort out the output and add it to the data base
Backend: sure *goes and does its thing*
Me: hey html/css, can I please have a square in the middle of the screen and a rectangle ok the left that takes up the full height minus 6px of the border?
html/css: *starts loading*
Me: ok cool thanks *anticipation*
html/css: *displays something resembling a 5 year old who just found out about rulers*

Got a text message from a former coworker who was spared the layoffs from $last_job.
"Go look at the status board, they left it up after the layoffs".
The 99% uptime is now down to 80% and you can practically pick out the exact week when the company laid off half the engineering team.
But hey, they redesigned the homepage and got a new logo.1 -
True story, honest to god.
Developed a state or the art SOA web app. Front end communicates with backend through API.
Client meeting, this guy looks me right in the eyes and blurts out : « why does the submit button get disabled after first click ? Clicking it a few times gets my request high priority »
I folded back my laptop and left the meeting without saying a word. Pretty sure I’m getting fired tomorrow.5 -
There is a very handy shortcut for us, the people who use the terminal every day. It's [CTRL]+w. It erases a word on the left.
HOWEVER, it is quite annoying to be used to that shortcut when you are in a browser. Especially when you've been writing a well-thought-out letter for half an hour or so.

I have a friend that every 2 days posts stories of her being in a club or something similar, dressed up and make up everywhere, with lots of drinks and shit like that. Girl has 0 skills and is living on the money that her dead parent left her. Honestly, shit looks fucking exhausting.
I hate clubs and being out with people. I do love drinking and having a good time... but every 2 days for it to be something? man I already feel tired and it ain't even my life.20 -
Seriously, wtf..
- Getting ready for the K.I.D.
- Will need a red LED light/lantern to see things around w/o waking the kiddo up
- Order a bunch of various models
- Receive some of them
- The another one arrives - it only has white and blueish-white modes
- Reach out to the seller, ask to send me what I've ordered
- Seller replies with:
> Hi, friend
> I am very sorry this light is out of stock now
WTF dude... I order a particular SKU of your products, I need it for its particular properties the other SKUs don't have and when you see you've got no more left you do what? Send me a random product? Seriously, WTF man?!? How about ping me with a message, explain that you've oversold the item and suggest a refund? naaah, too much work, right? Just grab whatever products you still have left on your shelf and send them to your customer instead. /s
WTF MAN?!?!2 -
I feel totally empty inside, it's 3:30 AM, but I got emoji's working in the Linux terminal AND Windows terminal using the same c code.
What you're looking at here is Linux (top left), Windows (starting slightly right of the top left), and the source code for both platforms. It also runs until you press the 'q' key so just displaying an Emoji would be much less code.
It took literally all day of learning about Unicode, Unicode in c, Unicode in ncurses, Unicode in Linux, and Unicode in Windows. But fuck me, I did it.
Only the new Windows Terminal (Preview) renders emoji. The old CMD.exe and powershell.exe will only render what their fonts offer, which isn't much. This got me stuck for a while.
Check out the lib here... leave a star for my ego.

One time I took out a colleagues letter keys except the ones needed to spell freezer (in croatian) and left the message freezer on the keyboard, took the remaining keys, put them in a bottle which I filled with water and put them in the freezer overnight (left work the day before earlier than him).
A positive was that the keys were real clean. Negative was the rest of the keyboard was dirty :)
Was a good laugh, though.4 -

Microsoft engineer walks into my room. we need to join your laptop to the domain, as part of the migration and upgrade company policy. so I give the guy my laptop. The guy has an agonizing look on his face! He goes. This is linux! Mind you all this time am nodding and bouncing on my chair. I work in a very diverse team. I'm a white male, from the US and I have someone from Russia, one from China, and 2 from India. The best thing so far was a team building exercise, where we went to a AAA baseball game, and I got asked all kinds of questions, that of course seem strange to me.

My previous boss has bad habit of relieving employees. He find out his links in a employee
s new company and then god knows what he did with that.
For, that reason I did not mention my current company when I switch but today I tried to find out those people who left before me it was shocking that no one updated their current company.
Creepiness of the former boss was real. Everyone was scared. -
Mfw you try out Atom and it crashes the moment you open anything even slightly big. Then you try to close it out and reopen it but it decides it should start off right where you left it-suspended in time... doing absolutely nothing.
On another note, it looks beautiful, has many extensions, and is highly customizable but it gets bogged down so quickly.8 -
People: cry how we are in an energy crysis, how expensive Li batteries are, how expensive and scarse are the resources and how wasteful the production process is
also people: pop 500mAh Li batteries in disposable e-cigs that get tossed away in the streets with ~75% of the charge left
me: picks those e-cigs, takes the batteries out, solders them in parallel and makes a proper powerbank for free26 -
I made a SMALLLL change in a .NET middleware that handles WebSockets (in the self-made SAAS I previously talked about) and it somehow fucked up n stopped closing connections even for people who left
On the bright side, I didn't notice any performance reduction in the service so the scalability was unintentionally stress-tested lol

Oh so day continued....
My boss just asked me before I left... You know that report we wanted automated, you said you'd get it done by today, is it done yet?
Me: well uh who dragged me into a PROD issue because no one else knows how to investigate... EVEN THOUGH I BUILT AND SHOWED U HOW TO USE THEM... SEVERAL TIMES. (no i didn't say this last but that's what went on in my head).
Oh and I figured out what the issue was... -
I was out sick the day an urgent ETL job I was building would be due, so it got reassigned. When I return, I find most of my code commented out and replaced.
The first step was rewritten, with a comment that reads "Made changes to run faster." What used to be a single execution lasting 30 seconds was now a 4 step process taking 5 minutes, and yielding identical results.
Being a one-time execution (not a recurring job), I'm left wondering why they thought execution speed was even an issue, let alone what about their redesign they felt was an improvement...2 -
I was working late one day and a "dumb" co-worker and another co-worker who work later than me were both there. "Dumb" co-worker was a few feet from me and the other co-worker didn't know I was working late that day. So she comes out of the break room and says "Oh, Team Manager, you're still here?"
I jokingly say "No, I left!"
Honest to god, "dumb" co-worker jumps out of her seat and says "HE'S LYING, HE'S STILL HERE."4 -
I finally got my github up.
You all can look at my terrible code, which is just glorified snippets. I don't mind.
Left out probably 98% of all the code larger than 10 lines because of jank, throwaways, and how poorly I documented it. Basically throwing shit on a wall.
I also left of the "maaaaaaths!" code because its already super convoluted and strictly a one-man thing. Likewise the web scrapers (barely documented and custom per site), and ML scripts.

Instead of accepting reality like a big man and acknowledging that making software with a cargo culted process that has no function in organizing the development work, the boss is insisting I'm to blame and wants me to "take responsibility". Since I'm leaving, I tried to give him some sincere advice, totally flipped him out.

I was placed at the company I work at 9 years ago and it was a college recruitment. Due to the recession in 2007,and its effects in 2008,although I graduated in 2008,my company called me only in 2009,roughly after an year of passing out. I really needed the job. After joining the firm,we were all inducted and had our official ID's and email accounts created. There was a mentor to me,who sat right across.
I was naive and had left for lunch without locking my system, only to come back and see the horror:
"Your resignation has been submitted" in bold ,as a wallpaper.
I was shocked and had lot of things in my head because earlier that week some firms had given "pink slips" and it was all over the news.
Finally,my mentor told me he did it for fun. Have never left my system unlocked ever since! -
My boss's SQL schema has no foreign keys and he said he left them out intentionally because they should be handled in the application layer and they're a large performance impact.
This is a fresh greenfield project and he's already pre-optimizing for problems we don't have yet, on things that may or not be bottlenecks using ideas (e.g. foreign keys have huge performance costs on mariadb/auora) with no hard data or facts to back them up.
Let's start a new project with some technical debt!2 -
Got to scratch of one of three remaining old (14years and counting) design mistakes this week.
Together with a colleague we replaced a 1.5 billion row table that I out of ignorance then designed with a 3 column composite primary key instead of an identity column.
Moving the data while keeping all synchronized (the table gets up towards 2 million new rows and 2 million updates a day while constantly being queried) took 1 week.
Just 2 skeletons left to clean out, any year now ;).1 -

I was talking to a CS student here at my University the other day. We were discussing our high school careers. He had the opportunity to take 6 different CS classes, but he cheated his way through most of the classes.
Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to take a huge total of 0 CS classes. But boy did I desire the ability to take CS classes.
It's kind of sad that students who desire to learn get left out in the rain, while people who can take classes just cheat their way through the courses.1 -

Ecma International, the organization in charge of managing the ECMAScript standard, has published the most recent version of the JavaScript language. ECMAScript 2016 (ES7 or JavaScript 7th Edition in the old naming scheme) comes with very few new features. The most important is that JavaScript developers will finally get a "raise to the power" operator, which was mysteriously left out of the standard for 20 years. The operator is **... It will also become much easier to search for data in a JavaScript array with Array.prototype.includes(), but support for async functions (initially announced for ES2016), has been deferred until next year's release. "From now on, expect smaller changelogs from the ECMAScript team," reports Softpedia, "since this was the plan set out last year. Fewer breaking changes means more time to migrate code, instead of having to rewrite entire applications, as developers did when the mammoth ES6 release came out last year."1

Decided to start using my smart watch again, mainly to track steps and pulse.
It has this weird "body battery" measurement, supposedly it shows how much energy you have left out of 100.
My problem is that I'm apparently in a sleep like state when I'm coding (low pulse, no movement and low breath count), so it charges my "body battery"... But I'm actually working...
Thus the watch is like: "no way you need to sleep now, you slept all day", when I head for bed...
Fuck me.4 -
During the summer I was part of a three person brand new software team. One of my co-workers had a rubber duck, and explained rubber duck debugging. Last night, while under the full belief that I could write a very simple lisp interpreter, I was awake until stupid o'clock and to my credit I got the tokenizer working and produces an output of parsed code. It's really basic but I was pleased to have gotten anything correctly parsed at that time.
But I'm also sitting outside my apartment waiting for a locksmith because lack of sleep left me unprepared to function correctly today and I'm now locked out...
Well done me! -
I just got a message from my company's front desk lady that someone called and asked for me and left a number for me to return the call. I've had a feeling about it and as it turns out, yes, it really was a recruiter who had the confidence* to call my company to sell me another job.7

If I ever get the chance to start my own company or pick out the dev team I work with... I will never, ever, ever work with anyone who doesn't understand how to abstract out a problem. Now their ad-hoc shit doesn't work anymore and I get to clean it up. 😫😞FML

The most annoying hack I've had to deal with was back when I did IT support, actually. Level 1 call center tech at the time. Apparently someone fell for a phishing email and gave out his outlook credentials. The phisher used that email account to send out another phishing email to roughly 1800 employees.
Security Operations noticed, because this guy's job didn't generally involve sending out mass-communication emails. They investigated, figured out what had happened, and opted for the nuclear option: they reset the password for EVERY SINGLE ACCOUNT that received the email. All 1800 of them. Over the weekend.
I walked into the call center Monday morning and checked the call stats, then did a double-take. There were over 300 people waiting in the queue. I almost left and called in sick. Turns out it wasn't that bad though. Annoying to reset so many passwords and having no downtime due to the full queue, but on the other hand my stats were better that day than any other, since every call was a 5-minute password reset.1 -
Life sucks when you get an error which you have seen this error like plenty of times and when you start debugging it and run out of all the ways you have always followed to fix it and all those didn't fixed the problem.
With nothing left now to approach, wondering what may have gone wrong.
The fundamentals are shattered

Do you find it difficult to make new friends in your late 20s? Im talking about situation when you left your hometown, left your university city and started living in a fresh new city while working as a remote dev? Only way to make some would be to get into some hobbies, but for now I just try to kick my anxiety causing addictions (nicotine in particular). Once Im back to my calm state I will get out there, but for now Im just an anxious uninteresting wreck haha. At least Im living with my sister and managed to find a great girlfriend, but in terms of social life I dont have it as much as I wanted. Im in a strange situation where I hate people but at the same time want to connect more with them.11

An 8 month nightmare project that failed more than it did anything else. With a team of 14 starting out and a 2 month deadline. Project ends Friday the 13th with only myself and another of the original team still left. It's crazy how issues out of our control caused skilled engineers to lose their cool and position and those that saw it through jumped up even though it all failed. Even if the project is horrible sometimes it pays to see it through to the bitter end.1

So my colleague sees an iPad on a desk that someone has left by accident. He puts in the wrong password a bunch of times to lock it for an hour as a joke and accidentally wipes it!! Turns out it was about to be used for end of sprint client demo 😂2

This week we had a live production issue that our staff were catching/fixing on the fly. We're a relatively small software team without any direct external customers, so this is not too unusual.
Unfortunately, the person in charge of dealing with these issues didn't resolve it during the work week, so we were stuck with it over the weekend. Said responsible employee left at 2:30 on Friday without figuring out how we'd deal with the problem without any staff in the office to intercept problem cases. Better yet, he drove all the way back, and was there from 3:30 to 4 and promptly left again without telling the rest of the team what was going on with the production issue. We asked how it happened, what it was, etc, but didn't focus on his fix (in hindsight, a mistake).
Since it's his job, I assumed that he would let us know what was up before he left on Friday. It turns out that he never addressed the production issue at all and just decided to leave.
A junior developer and I spent two hours contacting management (who, at this time are already at home with their families) to get clearance to either shut the system off or fix it. No one wants to give it and no one that's high enough up to approve the decision is available.
In the end, we asked the weekend mechanical support team (some friends of mine) to monitor the issue and they kindly accepted.
All of this could have been avoided if my coworker had either told us his plan earlier (so we could ask about the lack of coverage), gotten approval to shut it down for the weekend, or covered his own ass before he left for the day.
Ugggh. I get that we all make mistakes, but I really hope this guy shapes up soon. -
My colleague once left his PC unlocked while he went out to lunch, and I decided to change his keyboard layout to Dvorak. Worst thing is, he pecked at the keys, so he never looked up at his monitor. 50 lines later, he looks up and wonders why he has errors xD

So, what's my plan for this unplanned in-house vacation, you ask? Idk. Probably just staying in bed. Maybe bother with finishing all the damn annoying books I've left unread. Yay.
Also, FYI, about 99 years before covid19 broke out, the Spanish flu wiped out millions. We'll be fine. Lol.5 -
Started further developing an app (that I had left dormant) for retail outlets in my town. Spoken to the managers and they said they like my idea, and want to trial run it and then if it works properly, they want to start having the other branches around the country use it.
Now to sit by ass behind my screen, and finish developing my app (meaning tackling the many bugs that made me pull my hair out last time)2 -
It's like everytime you tell your PM that you need to be left alone to code their projects, it goes in one ear and out the other. I usually ignore them when busy coding, but then they start to blow you up on all forms of communication. Where are you? Why aren't you answering me? It's because I am coding away on all of your projects. If we sit here for hours talking, nothing would get done! Like was it necessary to message and call me on several forms of communication??

Today was my first time being on the other side of the table during an interview! Still felt a bit nervous, to be honest lol. When it was first developed, I said to te developer to store it straight from serial to MsSQL but out boss wanted it to follow the above spec.

But hey, half an hour ago I was angry and desperate. So... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯14 -
It baffles me that even now people still use ChatGPT to learn new things. LLMs are the antithesis of learning. They're inaccurate so you're left reasoning from flat out incorrect principles, they save you from encountering neighboring information to the answer you seek which is a central mechanic for developing a mental model, and the further away you are from common thought patterns the less their training applies which makes them fundamentally and unfixably terrible at detecting and correcting misunderstandings.38

So we called out our project manager and tech leader, who sent out an email last Friday to our bosses and stakeholders a project schedule - which we never knew about until we saw it in our inboxes - that showed we had already completed development and would go on to UAT testing by next week.
Except if you look at our agile board we have 3 weeks of dev tasks left and a couple more for testing and QA. Then our dev environment is shit because the deployment steps in TeamCity were not properly done by Dev Ops. And we still don't have a UAT environment created, much less tested out. And the project manager is about to go on a one-month vacation. Great!
So we replied back with all the aforementioned information (less the swearing and name-calling) and sent it out to the same recipients, including our bosses and stakeholders.
That was such a fun Friday afternoon. -

Convo with me an my friend today (i purposefully left out my opinions and reactions):
Friend: i want to learn c#
Me: sounds good, but I'd go java if i were you
F: yeah but i want to do unity
M: sounds good, but I'd go with unreal engine if I were you
F: what language is unreal engine?
M: C++, but if you want to make apps, go with unity
F: yeah I want to make an android app
M: sounds good, but I'd try out renderscript if I were you
F: yeah I've used that before
M: oh really? What does it do?
F: I don't know
M: its for gpgpu because android game devs needed better performance
F: yeah I've used that
M: what does gpgpu stand for?
F: umm… i know what gpu stands for
M: okay dude, you didn't use it
F: yes I did, I made a cypher
M: dude, you didn't use it
F: yes I did!
M: what does gpgpu stand for?
F: *left*
*five minutes later*
M: *checks phone*
M: *sees text from friend*

My former employer refuses to pay out my vacation time per state law. Left a month ago but they have not disabled my company email account.
Small shop so no active directory but still shocked they have not disabled my access. It’s only outlook/ office 365 no access to network drives.

Customer to me: "This should be right aligned, not left aligned. We need a fix on this 10 year old version, it's a blocker we can't do any work without it!"
Me to customer: "No. Not a blocker, minor change. We'll look at it next minor version."
Customer to boss: <repeat above>
Boss to me: "This is a blocker, check out the code and fix it today!"
FUUUUUUUUCK!
Minor stylistic changes are not goddamned fucking blockers!

I dont know why but everytime I want to make something I start out, find out its not possible and when Ive put it down and wait a few days there will be an sdk availble to make it possible.
5 days ago I started making a toll which reads the current song playing in spotify and it should send it to discord so other people can see the music Im listening to.
2 days ago I put the project down because there was no SDK available.
Yesterday the SDK for Rich Presence got released so I could continue where I left off. -
Why is Google so annoying? Download the latest version of Android Studio,, create an empty application from their template, build the empty APK and try to upload it to Google Play. Turns out the template for new app in Android Studio is set to use Experimental SDK, not accepted by Play Console.

My team lead had a history of being vindictive. After 1 engineer left she talked a lot of shit on him. After another left (who was extremely well liked), she surprisingly talked a lot of shit on her.
Well I put in my resignation and reached out to personally thank her for the years of working together. I said she could use me as a reference any time. She did not reciprocate. In fact, her entire demeanor was cold and confrontational.
No idea why I thought I would be any different, she's just a shitty person.3 -

I ran out of milk halfway a chocolate milk.
With no options left, I skeptically decided to add some water.
I had half a cup of milk, added 1/4 of water. Y'know, enough to look filled, not enough to ruin it in case it goes wrong.
Microwave it.
No, freaking, difference. Loved it.
I added some more water to see how much it changes, and it's just slightly less thick and 70% milk flavour. Sure it's a change but now I know the limit.

Stayed up coding all night to make sure things worked nicely. An hour before I left work yesterday, received 5 other never spoken off tasks.
none of the communication went directly by me, I just had to hear out the nonsense, but did a complete integration half a year ago
managed to do 3,8 of those task after working out and finishing the first set. became 5am.
might be because I went mental and have synced up 2repo's with idem dito codebase to be up to date to eachother (don't ask me why this is setup this way, I don't get half of their logic, hence why it doesn't work until I silently patch stuff out)
overslept by an hour.. yay me.

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -
Switching workplace after new year.
Already told boss I'm quitting last week. And it is like as soon as It was official I lost all patience with the company bullshit and lost the little interest I had left for my daily work. The codebase seemes bad before but now it feel 100x worse.
Work ethic keeps me from doing nothing but man I just want to get out.
Will be so nice to work with a new project and code base.1 -

Still crashes to this day.6 -

I just copied the exact same code from another program into mine, actually left out a loop because I didn't need it. Also took some other stuff out, nothing much, just some var = othervar that I didn't need.
The other program, from where I copied the code, works fine, is fast, I see no issue, has been in production for a while now and no complaints. Mine, WITH THE SAME CODE, doesn't move. I don't understand how this is possible.21 -

Recently, our COO left the company and we got a new one. He is, for some reason, a freelancer which I find very odd as a C-level employee.
Anyway, fast forward 3 months and we the scrum master (or project manager), 60% of our dev team, one tech guy responsible for installations and our intern IT support department all got fired.
Now they gave me the decision for a raise, extra training (that they pay) but I have to find/figure out or an e-bike. Does anyone have some advice?5 -
"Oh I knew they'd say that it's why I didn't get them to test it "
Did these words really just come out of your mouth? Who the fuck left you in charge of planning this shit?
Some team manager requested dev work it got approved and done standard. However they knew from the get go their team would rip it apart so when it came to the testing phase did he get his team to use it?
No he pulled fucking random people from other teams who don't use this feature at all in their day to day to test and sign it off.
Sod your vision mate. Our team just lost two months of work your team's productivity has dropped because you had a picture of how things should be but didn't want to be told no. And for a fucking valid reason your method is shit.

So this year, one of the guys in my class was complainig about someone leaving eraser shavings on his desk and moving around his monitor. Meanwhile, I also complained about my monitor being moved around.
Well, we discovered somehow that we were sitting in the same seat.
A friend of mine left an eraser under my keyboard that said "oh boi!!! Here we go..." so I took that eraser and left some eraser shavings on the other guy's desk as a joke, and he moved around my monitor.
The real funny part though was the group chat eraser emoji war that ensued. I posted an eraser as a reaction to all his posts, which got the eraser taken down. And then put back up again. Until I sneaked it back after the whole thing was over heheheheheheh
The year before, there was an all-out prank war. But that's another story for another time -

TLDR: Decision making is hard...
Get up at 7am, weather looks crappy but need go to the Drs today in NYC.
Original plan was to spend the morning in the park catching up on my reading list. Don't really want to goto the park now but lunch is still good? (Appt at 4pm, was only one left)
Walk into train station, pay for ticket. Get email from Drs saying he's sick...
Oh good... Except I already paid for the ticket.
Decide it's not worth it since weather is crap.
Walk out the station and... it's sunny... Fck...
Now what.... I can either go home and code or go shopping locally and eat out.
Currently decisions these and well shopping and eating out are also hard decisions... -

I was getting some state support whilst I start my business. I was told this would last for two years, so I planned out my first year largely growing my network rather than looking specifically for paying clients. With a month left in the first year, I was told that no. I only have a year. Now, four months later, I'm about four days away from being completely out of everything. I am so annoyed at being misinformed, but perhaps even more annoyed that I relied on a civil servant to give me honest, fact-checked advice and didn't do my own research.
What the fuck do I do now?4 -
My vps made me crazy last night when it showed me no space left on device, & i was like wtf dude merely using 2gb out of 50gb. This may get me some hate from y'all but let me make a confession here.
I have taken away clients from my previous bosses when they made the mistake of giving the client direct access to me outside the company.
It happened in 2019, my manager gave the client my phone number so they could directly call me and assign me tasks. Well, I left that company and took the client away with me. Heck, I even made more money for the next 4 months from the client than the company was paying me.
Again in 2023 when I left my job, I sent out LinkedIn requests to all members of the client's org, hoping that they'd remember me and reach out for projects. Well, 2 months into leaving the company, they did reach out and now I'm making 3X what I was making before.
I'd do it again in the future again and again. If YOU and I partner up to work for a client, I will make sure that you are out of the equation ASAP.
There, I said it. I've done it twice and I'll do it again in the future.4 -
I'm pretty sure remote teams don't work with the remote team doing all the coding and we have the same exact JD and in the same department...*sigh* when management are foreign, they really are afraid of letting the local tech team help out. No wonder we are 3, sorry 2 since a fellow dev left to a better job in Amsterdam

Find a cool package that need improvments, author has left a lot of unfinished tasks.
Fork project to fix some errors and add new features
None reply to my pool request so out of desperation i create a new project from scratch esponentially more complex
Someone finally reply to my pool request commentting that i "used mixed tab and spacing for indentation"
...well i tried to be as polite as possible on the reply😡 -
Today I was going to wipe an server used for testing purposes, I thought that all vms are just tests that has been left over from restored backups.
Was in the raid controller configuration ready to format the drives an couple of menu navigation away, a colleague came looking for me and said an website was not working, strange...
Turns out that one VM responsible for hosting our internal websites was on that machine -
I have a hdd left, in the mood of trying out a new os. Any new/hot os's to try?
Btw: my main os is xubuntu.8 -
So people are getting new jobs left and right, and there are several others looking for new jobs including me...
Well... now the CIO is following people around the office and watching them walk to their car and stuff. To me this just makes the situation worse.
If he's so worries about people leaving then why doesn't he hire people instead of trying drive everyone out? -
few years ago... Setting up Ellucian's mobile product only to find out they left out where to put the config file (it's not in the typical App_Data directory or root of WAR file) it's in a hard coded spot on the C drive (C:\ellucianmobile\...groovy)
Below is the change request their support team put in to update the documentation...
Their documentation seems to be a bit spotty at times, almost as if they want you to have to pay their support / consultants to setup the products you bought from them -
About 3 hours wasted because I typo'd and left out an I in bidirectional.... I hate computers some days... Too literal.2
-
Contribute open source, finish freecodecamp, create portfolio, hackerrank is a must, learning ML can't be left out, and office work!
-
Getting feedback from a client like: "on mobile left is right and right is left"
Wtf am i supposed to make out of this1 -
To the left, stickers I'm not proud of.
To the right, the one I'm actually proud of.
Would I put any of them to my laptop? No. Dev to gave me a moderator status, but took a favor back by shadowbanning one of my articles. I'm still a mod, but I quit two years ago.
Since then, I posted to my website exclusively. The latest article came out two years ago, but somehow my blog still generates consistent traffic. I have no idea who reads it. -
Today I spent almost a full hour after office hours debugging my code for an issue only to realise that the local process responsible for live reloading my code did not pick up changes after git branch switch.
So in retrospect, if I had left the bug for the day it would have automatically got fixed tomorrow once my laptop restarted.
But no...I just had to figure out the issue on my own today which wasted a complete hour and I won't get it back 🤦🏽♂️ -
Don't you just hate politics being spoken about in work. Many deva go to uni and get brainwashed into a left wing LOONEYS. Fed up of keeping quiet while they slagging the right wing party off!!!
Keep politics and religion out of work. You ask and preach to me ill say the truth about left wing nutters and false prophets.
But fed up being asked why I'm discriminating against people by my boss/owners.
My programming always comes into questions after politics or religion brought up. I'm sure my work was amazing before this happen
Apparently golliwog might offend the person across from me. Sorry but did he say it's offended him. NO. would he tell me like when I have before. YES. NOW WHO THE RACISTS.2 -
So as it turns out, the redemption of client money has failed.
About £4k just sitting there.
I was doing testing earlier, and accidentally left the endpoint at sandbox, all of the payments failed, so we have to mock the payment in now, once we get internet back.1 -
I'm so sick of having to maintain a 10 year old back-end codebase that is built on a proprietary php framework that isn't documented at all. I am still a student, and I'm left mostly alone to figure things out. It's been a while since I started, but it sucks all the energy out of me to figure out how things are built...
My senior is too busy with other projects so when I ask a question I only get answers hours later, and we work remote. He is so busy that he has to consistently work overtime.
I am so overwhelmed...5 -
I have been completely out of motivation for around a week now.
Like, there is nothing left.
I've done nothing but playing Minecraft Factions and watching anime for hours in the last few days.
How do I make this stop? Help please.9 -
To my surprise, I recently found a documentation page written by a specific co-worker of mine, which I thought could only mean he had decided to leave the company and thereby was forced to write that. Later I found out I was right about that. How sad is that? I mean that someone refuses to document his work in any way, not that this person has actually left the company. The only information on the page was something along the lines of: "Uses the gradle build system.". Ah, and "you have to have Java installed". Thanks, mate. Couldn't have figured that one out.

Duh. I'm really torn right now. I'm still wasting my time in this garbage college, and my patience is sooo running out. I can easily get a job by now and actually learn things, but there's just a few months left until I graduate. The worst few months. Should I just screw it or endure a bit more? 🤔21
-
When you unknowingly/accidentally/inadvertently delete something someone was working on for a long time and they don’t tell you until several months later when all the backups are long rotated out. No way to fix it and nothing left to do but accept blame and sanctions and work to regain lost trust. Kill me now.4

Not too long ago I bought 3 monitors. Now I have my IDE on the center, console and debugger (and devrant) on the left, git and music on the right. Still figuring out the best arrangement for all windows but this already feels awesome!3

In response to my own previous rant (https://devrant.com/rants/1538792/...) , I try and help my self, I asked few questions to my self, What do you need in life to live?
> a couple of friends
> a (good) job
> parents
> a girlfriend (optional)
> a sufficient salary
and I've got almost all of that, so I'm being optimistic on wards , and I'm installing Ubuntu so there's that, in the end it matters if your're *happy* and with all of this I still am not happy, I am being optimistic but not happy, there's something left out from, there's something I'm still missing out9 -
How the fuck do I handle self-called senior developers who do not want to do testing (writing unit tests and manually testing) in an agile environment where there is dedicated tester anymore?
They behave like fresh programmers out of college only wanting to write their code and nothing more. We had a dedicated tester role but that guy left the project. -
actually it wasn't mine. But it affected me. So we had a project website on wordpress and wanted to rewrite the theme. everything went well to the Point of production. Site is fine locally, at testing and on stage. On production we still see old, a bit broken old version, but only on homepage. Wtf. Nothing helped. After couple of hours later we found out, that the admin was updating php version and he left html shot at production, which was taking over.

My boss tells sets the tasks, and supervisor assigns them to the dev team. It should be as smooth as that simple sentence, but it just isn't. Boss sucks at communicating his ideas clear enough, so we're left scrambling on ourselves trying to guess and develop what he needs, and when we deliver it, boss says it's not what he asked! It's my first job as a self-taught frontend developer, but the lack of structure and clear objectives of the project got me so stressed out that I'm thinking about looking for another job.

I just bought a Pixel 2 so I can have live captions...
Apparently it has Android 10 support as well...
Why didn't I think of this earlier.... Though apparently support was only added in December. But just $100... And well I had a 60$ gift card balance left so that can't out to $40. (And it's only a 3yr old phone... Amazing how fast prices drop)
Actually I ordered a 3a first but then found out pixel 2 can do it as well... but now I'll have 3 phones...
OP1 (sitting in drawer unused for a few years), OP6, Pixel 2.
Guess I'll finally have an unrooted phone though I can use for all those apps I can't hide root from...1 -
When I'm really really stuck, I generally stress out that I should be able to figure it out so I walk outside, sit down, listen to relaxing music and imagine I'm on some isolated mountain somewhere away from all the problems of deadlines and managers and algorithms...then i just write down what i need to do and what i have done already and have a little brainstorm session with myself over possible causes/solutions from sensible to crazy, just anything possible... generally I always come to 2 methods - divide and conquer and document and destroy (the latter being used in cases such as having to fix something in an undocumented 10,000s lines long sproc that someone who left the company wrote)
-
Developers are magical machines powered by coffee that can make something out of nothing. The CEO machine runs on expensive Amazonian coffee and comes up with ideas and unreasonable deadlines. Daisy chaining them makes the CEO machine's idea into a product with uncommented code and console.log()s left over from development.

Damnit I am an idiot. I am making a downlader for talkpython lectures and ive managed to get the "user_tpt" (auth key) well when I'm set up the request I sent it in the header when its supost to be in the cookies. I couldent figure out why it wasn't working so I left it for 2 days and now just when I open it I see my mistake1

Have to turn the music up so much it hurts my ears because of all the noise here. Drown it out, sure, but now I need to relax, regain focus, the 20th time today. This is bullshit. Totally losing any momentum I had today due to constant interruption.
So as long as my ears are bleeding I figured I would rant a little. shout out to us devs who are not left the fuck alone to do our jobs.2 -
Working on writing a Morse interpreter in Java..
I find out I have to initialize a collection of a specific alphabet with unique symbols in it..
I am too lazy to come up with something right now..
And thus I start repeatedly performing the following actions:
down, left, insert apostrophe
for stuff like putting values into my Map<Character, char[]>.
Now my purposefully rhythmic typing sounds like a galloping horse. Tackatack, tackatack, tackatack! ♫
Coding adventures..

Recruiter left his firm to start his own, so he tried to set me up with my current company but I turned it down because it was 6k less than where I was. I would have accepted 3k less, but ended the process. A few months later, the recruiter was out of the picture and the director invited me to lunch. The recruiter was dating the owners daughter, never went back to them with my counter.

So a client is apparently ignoring my request for payment to continue the hosting services for their blog ( which has been inactive for a long time ).
Thinking of getting rid of the client. I wouldn't mind if they voluntarily left because they don't want to pay, but now it's like i have to force them out.
This is going to be a rope walk. I wouldn't want their few hundred followers coming after me.
Any tips?9 -
You know you're having a seriously off day when you make code changes and execution remains the exact same... I've been throwing down logs left and right and nothing is changing! I am surely going to hate myself when I figure out how stupid this mistake is...
-
So, right now I'm having to study the code of an old pretty complex Delphi calculation tool so I can migrate it to Matlab. There is no actual documentation.
The person who knows the tool best and only one left to have even seen the code is not supposed to know what I'm doing.
I'm supposed to talk him into giving me a quick (1h) walkthrough of the code without actually telling him why, or figure it out all by myself.
He feels too strongly about Delphi.
I kinda don't feel this ...2 -
My angularJS learning project is closely coming to an end. Not bad for a JavaScript first timer. Everything is laid out properly, the only thing left is to connect it properly with the backed :) . PS I'm using angular12

I approach programming with a lot of resentment since I am aware that all of us can have MAJOR fucking shifts in the way we do shit from one year to the other.
Let them find out about a different kind of architecture which uses fart propulsion as a form of interpreting machine code and everything becomes absolete.
And then we are only left with FartScript(Oracle TM)
There would still be node though(he he) -
I've been asked to release a project which has been written by someone else, then rewritten by another developer, and both have left the company.
I can't release it yet because there is an inconsistent bug throwing some values out.
We've got it running side by side with an older legacy system which it's going to replace. Before the 2nd developer left they added some logging to our live system to record both values so that they could be monitored to make sure there was no inconsistency.
There are some inconsistencies... however, when I run the same data through the new system and the legacy system in a test environment they both come out correct.

I've considered quitting...2 -
I don't know man if it's inferiority superiority complex or I'm actually bit slow in development but the guy who works with me is quite fast at making stuff. I don't want be a person who left out by his co-worker. The constant thing going on my mind these days is how can i become faster at making stuff.4

Today, an hour left of work, our team was brought to an all-hands meeting. 20 mins later, I learned why our team was so often left out when getting a 3rd dev.
Someone higher up decided to move our train to another part of the state (it's birth place was where it is now). And that same person decided to localize all teams on a train to the same location too... which means my team is getting killed. We have an estimated lifespan of a few months.
...and here I thought moving to an open floor plan was gonna be horrible. The new location is 200 miles north (an hour 30 via the free campus bus). This won't be a fun coming new year. -
I am not a techie or don't know much about the system. But once I tried dual booting my system. I searched how to and did what it was recommended, i.e, made a partition using Windows and then tried to install. But during installation it never showed me the partition I created. I asked my friend and he somehow installed Ubuntu in my laptop . Later I found out that it just erased my D drive in Windows and left 200 GB on my hard drive unallocated. I guess I have the weirdest laptop .

ive had my degree for almost 6 months. still working for the restaurant i started at 4 years ago to get through college, while all my friends have development jobs. im feeling left out. :/8

Any recommendations on a jquery/js plugin that saves form fields in the scenario where the user left the form or page they can come back and still have the values from when they left. I wrote up some thing for a small form on an old site using sessionStorage api but I need something that can work with any form or perhaps multiple forms at once. any good plugins out there?6

People all over the world own dogs as pets. In some places in the world people eat dogs.
Is it okay to feed your pet dog the scraps left over from eating dog?
I also pointed out to a coworker that New York has huge rats. I then said: "street steak".
The response was: "Why?!"2 -
I can't say how a CS degree helped me since I dropped out, but in all of my tech related jobs we turn down candidates with a CS degree left and right. Turns out showing up for class and managing to pass doesnt give you real world experience, passion, or even knowledge. I used to be a floor factory worker and my team lead was a CS degree holder.
But hey, maybe the crippling debt and super unrelated classes were worth it. -
Till now I thought that android RTL support meant screen coming out from right to left or something like that. Not anymore!
-
Obligatory !rant, I had been I think about 6 jobs. My current job is still new to consider best/worst boss yet but in my entire career, my old job was the best boss ever. Looked out for all of us, care for us, fought for us, pushed us to do better and rewarded us for being exceptional. Unfortunately I left because of upper management's stupid decisions for financial reasons. I won't go back for my old job but I wouldn't mind working for my old boss again.

Coworker heads out for lunch and says "I'm bringing my apple with me".
I looked at him and said "But you have a PC..."
He gave me the best look as he started to walk way.
"Next time I'll bring my Dell just for you... " He said as he left. -
3 days when I had to complete documentation for an audit. I only returned to my room to shower and change clothes for the next day. That too I left at 8AM and returned at 09:30AM.
2 days when I had to complete setting up the office network over the weekend. Note that this was over a weekend.
And this is without counting the many hours I've spent semi-working at hackathons. I've gone up to 60 hours without sleep, coding the shit out of my brains.2 -
Anyone one else been on a dev team where it seems between all the senior ppl, it's non stop revolving door of being out because they're having a baby? Paternity leave for like 2 months....
It's like build something then leave right before it burns down... Or just leaving a need for whoever is left to figure out...3 -
When you buy a voice recorder it comes with batteries but only a quarter percent left... now I have to go out and buy new batteries before my new meeting.

see. anything they make that is good could pass for one of ours :P
" A single strand of spider's weave
Just dancing in the sun
