I'm the biggest dumbass, the laziest procrastinator I know of..
Joined devRant in June 2017, got eligible for the stickers in a week's time, sent a mail requesting them, but never received it. Given the size of our community, I thought I'm way behind in the list and probably receive them in few months. After a year, I totally forgot about it.
But, the colossal stupid that I am, had also lost the key to my mailbox (the physical one). I never cared about the lost key, because who sends post these days !!!
When I finally got a duplicate key for my mailbox after 2 years, guess what I found.. a first class international mail from devRant which arrived on July 2017 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️, couple of weeks after I originally requested
But, yay... I finally got them..16 -
So, there's this big company in Poland with its name starting with C and having CEO famous for saying that every software developer can be replaced with a finite number of college students.
They recently lost a HUGE government contract and so stories of people working there came to light. My two personal favourites:
1. A tester who has been fired for finding too many bugs and mistakes in their product. He was also told that bugs are to be found by clients on production, not in-house.
2. A programmer who was yelled at by his team leader for "wasting time" on code reviews instead of typing the code. He was also told he hadn't been hired to criticise other people code.
God, I'm so grateful I don't work there.20 -
6 months ago I sold everything, quit my job, gave up my apartment and left the country with my 11kg backpack. I booked a one way ticket to South America. I wanted to travel, get lost but also finish up some personal projects and do a little tech books challenge I came up with. I learnt so much over the past half a year, it's crazy.
Not looking back. Projects paid off and it turns out that my dream company actually found me themselves without me even applying... and so still from South America I'm in final rounds of the interview! 🤗
All my worries about a gap in CV, no employment along with other problems I thought I was gonna have... It's all BS. So if anyone here is waiting for a sign. Well, this is it now. Go!22 -
Lost my iPhone last night😭 - looked all over but no luck - last chance the gas station - called and the owner said he found a phone with devRant sticker on the back. I still was not sure as lots of devRant members in NY but yes it turned out to be mine. Nice!
And the best news is the gas station owner told his dev son about devRant! So my temporary loss may change his sons life. Sometimes things are just meant to be. 😀12 -
I lost my sanity and googled ”FUCK YOU XCODE YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT”...
That's how I found devRant.9 -
— Hi, lost and found office?
— Yes, can I help you?
— You found two hours of my life?
— It does not compile, right?
— Nope :/5 -
Remember the WebDev guy from my last inspirational "rant"?
Well he called me and he somehow found a Support scammer
so I went over to his place and setup our "how to destroy a scammer's computer" kit which we got from a couple of friends in Discord and waited for the scammer to call.
And at long last, the scammer called,He setup a VM while I find his IP and RAT his computer, then went on to find other computers and check if they reside on the same LAN network.
at that point WebDev guy asked me "what are you planning to do?"
"Tell him this is your banking app" while presenting him a virus executable. "Don't click on that though". So he did, and they began the transfer and once the scammer clicked it on his computer (I was observing via RDP), we lost connection to the scammer's computer so I assumed the thing worked.
We were laughing our asses while in the middle of this fuckery.
Best moment in my life.8 -
My girlfriend lost her hair band at my house. Today I found it and finally solved the problem of tangled cables!8

Just wanned to kill myself because my colleague wrote this misleading nonsense, i was totally confused and got lost inside code and then i found this source of evil.
City Country = new City();2 -
Found a Google employee in street view getting lost and using paper map .. There are also seem to be 2 guides with him...
I find it kinda amusing8 -
Today I found somebodies phone... Together with his bank cards in the flip protection wallet ... I was able to turn it on and charge it so I awaited a call and now through the caller I was able to return it to its owner within 2 hours of finding it 🥰 got a nice bottle of booze as a reward8

Spent nearly a day to get this tiny laptop-tablet to work.
I got myself a second hand Asus T100TAF but Linux compatibility was far to be found. Online resources said I'd be very lucky if I'd even get the touchscreen or the WiFi to work.
I've been installing distro's all day and I finally have a working version!
Lubuntu with Budgie as desktop environment. Touchscreen works out of the box and some random person on the Linux mint forum linked to a github thing. Lost all hope already but this made the fucking WiFi work.
Can dock and undock it and it works great.
Thanks to all open source devs for this!18 -
Spent 4 hours today working on a monitor that wasn't working. someone had put by their garbage can in the rain. I dried it out for about 2 weeks before plugging it in. It turned on but when I plugged in the DVI, it did nothing.
Today, I pulled the ENTIRE thing apart because either I could find out what was wrong, or all is lost anyways. Who knows what the rain could do to it?
With no luck, I did a quick search online about the model and found that this one just had some defective firmware (Who knew monitors had filmware??) I installed it, ran it, it took about 20 seconds and it worked!
Lesson learned once again: google is your friend9 -
Lost a bet and switched from Vim to VS Code for a day. Ten minutes into, I found myself editing gitignore in the embedded terminal. Something went wrong.4

I recently learned why you shouldn't delete your linux partition by just pressing the 'delete volume' button.
I currently own a SP3(i7, 256gb).
I got bored of windows and installed Linux Mate. It ran quite fast and snappily. All was good.
Then I looked on the internet. Apparently fedora runs really well on the SP3. So I deleted my Linux partition by pressing 'delete volume'.
Turns out, thats a bad idea. Grub was in that partition, so when I restarted my tablet, it booted into the 'grub rescue>' prompt.
After messing around, I finally found that pressing the Volume Down button and power button at the same time seemed to boot into my Fedora Live USB.
All the while, I was quite worried I'd lost all of my assignments(I knew I could have used the minitool of gparted live cd).
Finally I got it to install, and all was good again. Has anyone else made this mistake?7 -
Working on a project where the coordinator is insisting on using OneDrive. Lost the link he sent out in an email so decided to:
- Google "OneDrive": Eventually brought me to "office.live.com/...." with a view of my settings and apps ... no OneDrive.
- Spent a while using a bit of logic to click around and find it, forgot logic doesn't work well with MS products and ended up on Outlook instead.
- Spent a while searching for the original email with the link, found it, brings me to "...sharepoint.com/....".
- Inside sharepoint (OneDrive?) the banner says "Office 365".
- But the browser tab says OneDrive.
Are Microsoft just afraid of consistency at this point? I mean seriously, pick a name and use it everywhere. Why is that so hard? why is that so complicated?6 -
Once the system "lost" a user_id var that says who started a batch, but it was a mandatory field that was filled at the beginning of the process.
I tried to find the reason, failed, called a senior for help, he also failed to find the reason.
After a couple of hours I looked to him, he looked back and I said,
"Let's call it a solar flare bit flip?"
"It's the only logical explanation"
So it became a bit flip issue to the PM, we had a good laugh, we send as "system instability" to the client.
The bug never happened again, no one ever found the true reason, maybe it was really a bit flip 🤔1 -
few years back there was a corruption scandal in my country, serbia. one of the ministries paid around 25,000 euros for a website to a company that was founded few weeks before the open call. for comparrison sake average pay at the time was around 300 euros. the website it self didn t have any special features, just publishing contenet. wordpress would do the job. on a press confference, trying to defend the cost, spokesperson of the ministry said that the website was made in "cms programming language".
it community lost it! mems started immediatelly, "i am learning cms language so i could charge 25.000 per project". and then one guy got intrigued, found the login page, and typed:
username: admin
password: 12345
and got in!!!!
i kid you not!
he posted featured news on the homepage, saying hey guys your credentials probably shouldn t be admin/12345. twitter was on fire, everyone started loging in and posting shit.
and the crasiest part is that this guy was arrested and charged for cyber-crime!4 -
So I bought myself some computer glasses after feeling uncomfortable looking at a screen with "bare" eyes (I don't wear corrective glasses).
But the other day, I lost them.
I looked for them everywhere, under each grain of dust I could find. They were nowhere to be found.
Reluctantly, I bought new ones. They arrived today, I unpack them, test them, and then do some flat cleaning. I lift some envelope and...
My first pair was sitting there, innocently.
Fuck me.7 -
Depression update two.
Thanks for amazing support guys!
I have made decision to have a digital detox. Today I did have another bout of depression accompanied with a mild case of confused state of mind and suicidal thoughts. I have found the triggers(Social media and too much time spent on the internet.) I have lost a lot of weight too. From 68KG -> 46 KG in span of weeks. So I hope I will catch you soon after I recover from it.
Fuck depression. If anyone is having bouts of depression please contact your health-care provider or friends/family.
Love you all. ❤️🙏☺️10 -
Fuck, I just lost a node module name.
A few days ago I had an idea for a node module, checked npm to see if the name was taken and it was not. Today I was going to publish it and found out someone registered it 2 days ago.
Now I'll have to think of another name or publish it under my username...8 -
A few years ago I was browsing Bash.org, and a user posted that he'd physically lost a machine.
A few weeks ago, I'd switched my router out for OPNSense. I figured it was time to start cleaning up my network.
Over the course of tracking down IP addresses and assigning statics to mac addresses, I spotted an IP I didn't recognize.
Being a home network, I'm pretty familiar with everything on the network by IP, so was a little taken aback.
I did some testing, found out that it was a Linux box. Cool.
I can SSH into it. Ok.
Logs show that it's running fine, no CPU/Memory/Harddrive issues. Nice.
So where is it?
Traceroute shows its connected directly to the router... Maybe over an unmanaged switch...
Hostname is "localhost"... That's no help.
I've walked the network 4 times now, and God knows where it is.
I think maybe I'll just leave it alone. If it ain't broke...9 -
Being the only dev in a media company, I believe my coworkers looked upon me as the evil Internet reincarnated into a living person.
Most of them avoided me like a leprous, and I experienced long periods being almost isolated.
I did almost quit so many times I've lost count.
I eventually found another job, where there's lots of love, caring and we all embrace each other's skills. It feels like I'm a butterfly who finally got to break out of my miserable cocoon.2 -
I've lost my gf (she said she wouldn't want to be with a programmer, I said 'sure, bye') and found a much better and more fun career path than I had before.
Otherwise my life stayed pretty much intact, except for the fckn compile time errors and occasional 'fix my electronic device' or 'hack this social media account for me' requests. In retrospect it was more than worth it, would switch to be a professional developer anytime again.11 -
Life Before the Computer
An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!
Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3-inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!
Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for awhile!
Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!
Cut - you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a spider's home
And a virus was the flu!
I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!3 -
My relative once called me and asked if she could come over to my house so that I can copy Facebook over to his flash drive. Turns out that she accidentally deleted the bookmark to facebook.com and thought that she'd lost it forever.
This is want happens to you when all of your relatives found out that you are "good with tech".3 -
I found out last week that I was passed up for a promotion not because I didn't deserve it but because I got one last year.
My manager asked to have me promoted. People on other teams wanted me promoted. HR did not.
I wasn't mad about it at the time but the more that I think about it the more it's getting me down. I've been pushing myself trying to prove that I would be good for the position and now I have lost all motivation and I hate it. I like where I am at and I like what I do but this has really killed it for me. I'm struggling to get anything done now.6 -
I was hopelessly lost in a problem when I found an Issue on Github describing the exact same problem.
Unfortunately, the message board it didn't quite help me solving the problem.
Some time later I managed to solve the problem, and remembering the Github issue, I wanted to post an actually helpful message.
Oh but wait. The issue was fucking closed.2 -
Today is a sad day for me.
I lost all of my data today. My phone was in my pocket and the Iris scanner was looking for a face. I guess it did it multiple times because I found that it had completely reset my phone.
I'm pissed mostly because I knew I had some control over when I could have backed up my phone... I could have at least been pushed back a month but now I'm pushed back by a whole year!
That is a fuck ton of time for things to have happened.
I'm just sad right now guys. There was some good stuff that could have been saved.11 -
Just found out with client, a recruiter played double agent, charged 25% on me and 20% on client, a whopping 45% commission! Fuck off.
Thankfully it’s only a small project. We are both hiring dev soon so he lost a good chunk of business, at least from me, for perpetuity.1 -
I was unemployed and had to sent out 10 or so job applications per month to e eligible to receive the money substitution for unemployment...
Anyways, not many jobs fit my experience, so I was sending out to those with higher/different requirements aswel.. That day I was meeting my sister and she was already waiting for me, so I quickly sent out a totally unpersonalised application for a job I wasn't qualified for. Next day I got back response email with a self grading questionaire I didn't really understood, all about MS technologies I never worked with..which means I didn't know how to grade myself..I decided to ask around people to try to help me grade myself, but then I totally forgot about that in the next days and never replied to that email.
Anyways, week later I got email for job interview from a sister company (found that out later, snooping through linkedin). I was surprised someone requested a meeting with me, especially without the agenda (at that time I was not aware it was a job interview).. Anyways I went there, found out the guy interviewing me thought they lost my questionaire. I explined the situation and he just decided to ask me around to see what I know. So we talked about my past experience and the guy who was doing the interview explained what is what & and explained what I did before and together we figured out what I know and what my experiences are... After we were done, he said that everything else, the payment and other stuff about the job position I should discuss with the director. Not to ask questions, but negotiate.. O.o And just like that I got the job, because they liked my CV & attitude (I like to learn new stuff) and they thought I'd fit in perfectly.
I'm still working there, it's been 4 years now, I think.. loved it since the day one.. Got 'promoted' to another project, crappy old code noone wants/dares to touch but I love it! The guys think I am weird cuz I like to solve/fix things and make them better, and previous employees who worked on that project have all lost their shit and quit. They are all wondering how I can handle this, but little do they know about devrant & my love for the crazy!!2 -
Sweet baby Jesus the stories are true. I thought this day would never come but yesterday I found a website in production straight out of a horror story.
Inline script tags that contained spaghetti code and static content. And to top it off inline style with position absolute for everything 😰😰
Also worth mentioning a couple of broken pages(404) and a beatufill repeat-y image for the background😳
I lost all hope😂16 -
So, I was shopping with @terrus and we found this lost duck in the bakery shelf. We felt it was a call of fate... Obviously, we bought two of them 🦆🦆❤️2

A company contacted me about their custom ticket system not working
Then after asking them couple things they just wanted me to look at emails they found stacked and lost in the ticket system archive:
One clients ticket somehow got caught in between updates and hes been answering the auto close notification (each ~3 days because it never got closed) of the system, with ranging from "yes, thank you, I have solved the issue" escalating to "why dont you leave me alone, I have told you, I have fixed it, please stop", poor guy 🤣 -
I created this Pet lost and found app (only available in my country for now) , written in Flutter (client side), elixir (backend), MySql (dB).
Just a small project for a charity organizations.
Just in case the gif is not moving https://youtu.be/oO5Q7xS7rOQ3 -
After a 70 day streak on github, I forgot to commit my daily work and went to a party.
I came back drunk as fuck and thought I lost my steak.
Today I woke up and found that I made a commit and deployed into production, but the message was "Removed funny code"...2 -
Make. Fucking. Backups...
I had to find a MailChimp sync plugin for a webshop and thought I found a good one that synced one way (webshop to MailChimp).
I figured, meh, what could go wrong? So I installed it, ran it...and somehow lost around 4000 mailinglist receipients because they were not in the webshop.
Turns out it adds the registered users in the webshop, but also removes entries that are not! Needless to say, I had some explaining to do and was only able to recover about 3000 addresses from a previously sent campaign.
Customer was not happy, neither was my boss, very important lesson learned...1 -
A good life lesson:
1. DON'T DELETE FILES YOU MAY WANT TO RECOVER
And if you DO delete them and then recover them, then
2. DON'T SEND THE RECOVERED FILES TO A·N·Y·O·N·E
Today I found a lost µSD card in the street. I did what every sane person would do -- plugged it into my laptop :)
There I found a directory with recovered pictures. I figured, some of them may contain the author's info in metadata, so I ran a quick plaintext search for @gmail.com.
Turns out, inside some of the recovered picture files I could find embedded company director's emails in plain-text. I mean, open the picture with a text editor and read through those emails - no problem! And these emails contain some quite sensitive info, e.g. login credentials (lots of them).
Bottom line, if you delete and recover your files, then do your best to keep them close: don't share them, don't lose them. You might be surprised what these recovered files may contain15 -

Today I cleaned my computer SSD (moved ~30GB to a 2TB external drive) and I found 12GB of lost projects.
I thought that I've lost them years ago. They were just looking at me in their big folder. -
Right now, I'm tracing a bug that causes some of our data to be lost.
and I found a table with 'xxx' field on it. ohhh. what is it for?17 -
I lost 2TB of family photos and videos a few years ago by dropping a single hard drive. Nearly all of it was later found on people's computers who forgot to clean them up when we got the NAS. I'm not so eager to delete data once it's backed up ever since.3
-
Sat at my desk this morning, computer incredibly slow, lots of error windows saying files could not be found.
I decide to reboot. Post is slow. And that's a HDD failure. I lost half of my storage. Luckily, almost everything is for projects so it's all in the git repo.1 -
I lost my bike key in office yesterday and searched hell out of everywhere like in office, in my bag, in others bags (never know who can prank you), even we were searching in everyone's drawer but we were unable to find it so we went out an checked if I dropped it near canteen or anywhere out in office area using mobile flashlight at night for like 2 hours. So we just lost hopes and went to home by bus.
So today we went to shop and bought the new lock assembly and while we were heading back to office our QA called me laughing and telling "we found it, it was stuck in your chair and it fell out while the cleaning guy was cleaning it.!"
Luckily the shopkeeper took lock assembly back as it is laughing and gave us full refund.1 -
TAP - The Art Project.
Started in my college, been working on it for nearly a decade now and during the pandemic I was able to find co-founders and we built an amazing MVP.
But now I got busy with my new job, which is super fun, tech guy got married lol and design guy is little lost.
But over the years, experimenting with people, ideas, and everything around, my idea evolved into something which is loved by everyone I shared it and I can see a huge potential in it.
But meh! Fuck it. Because I am too bored and would rather order a practice pad and start learning to play drums (my childhood dreams), attend more gigs, and live a happier life.
Because the heart wants what the heart wants :)
For the curious ones, you can test the MVP at https://www.tap.prismo.net
And there are few other side projects that I completed which can be found on my portfolio page
https://www.floydimus.prismo.net
I am just wondering shall I redirect my main URL to my portfolio page or keep it pointed to TAP?7 -
i found text messages of my gf cheat on me 20 minutes before i start work today and the whole day i am mentally paralyzed, stunned, confused, lost, flabbergasted, and completely at loss of words. almost couldnt focus on work at all9

Recruiter: I saw your resume and I found the perfect position for you but I have to confirm a couple of things.
Me: okay great.
Recruiter: I see you worked for a NOC for 2 years and your familiar with python.
Me: yes.
Recruiter: Great how does 50 sound.
Me: That's great I can definitely do 50k a year.
Recruiter: That's $50 an hour.
Me: Uh...... yeah definitely I can do that. What's the position again?
Recruiter: Senior Systems Engineer for B of A.
Me: Oh uhhh....... (In my head I'm like maybe I can fake it til I make it...)
Me: sigh..... I think you made a mistake....
I regret it but I would have lost them trillions possibly causing the financial collapse of the company for at least a week when they realize I'm not qualified.2 -
Well, today I felt like the witch from the sleeping hollow movie.
I was working on a code that logins to a page and download files to a folder, according to the user.
Well, I tried to use the webservices from the page (like it should be) but the links were broken, and I lost a entire working day on trying the API 😮
The second day I tried with Selenium. Everything was going ok, but I wanted to run it without opening the browser and I found a “Headless Chrome”. At the end of the day, I found several blogs saying that Headless Chrome can’t download files 😱 second working day lost
Today I read about “PhantomJS”. I tried the code in C# with OpenQA.Selenium.PhantomJS BUUUUUUT it was missing 😡 I also tried with Python, but I had the same problem.
Finally, I found a blog with a solution for C# with Headless Chrome 😄random phantomjs story time missing packages chrome selenium webdriver headless webdriver automation chromedriver4 -
Im off of 3 hours sleep right now after getting lost down the rabbit hole of debugging.
I was just putting stock on the shelves at my job and a customer came up to me and asked me where something was. I thought of two places it could be so i said:
"if item == aisle4
{print("You've found it"); }
else if item == aisle6
{print("You've found it"); }
else
{print ("Im unsure where it is sorry"); }"
She just looked at me and my coworker told her where the item was, once she left my coworker started laughing at me and called me the biggest nerd he knew.1 -
This was more than 15 years ago. We migrated a bunch if data (home to a new server and repurposed the old one, the same night. This was not the first task on that allweekender, so it was around 3am on Sunday, with very little sleep, when I had to copy the data. I did that by logging in as admin and copying with Total Commander. Obviously, even admin did not have the permissions to some folders, so a lot of financial data were lost, as the users found out on Monday morning. We had no backup. Old server was not only reformatted, but the disks were used to build a different raid set. Luckily, one of the users who had access to this data kept a backup on a flash drive. (If you're wondering, I should've used robocopy with backup mode)

I have a very annoying person in my team, who thinks he is the leader and is so full of himself that once he gets some idea he makes it final without listening to other's opinion, kinda anti-humble.
Today he was explaining that we are going to implement this feature and one of the member had a doubt which was legit so that guy started explaining it, but didn't really understood what the question was ( as he always does) he was heated up already as he was explaining the same thing again and again but it was nowhere near what the exact question was, by mistake I entered the conversation and tried to explain the question to him, he became so annoyed that he lost all his patient and shouted at me to shut up. Not only I felt bad but also found myself helpless in such situation i didn't know what to do, I was annoyed like anything, and now I think that I don't really know how to deal with annoying people such annoying and toxic people..6 -
I often struggle with procrastination, finding myself getting lost in TikTok and YouTube shorts for hours on end or even staying in bed doing nothing, even when I have important deadlines to meet.
Have you attempted to overcome procrastination before? If so, what approaches have you found effective, and which have not worked for you?6 -
After a long long time,
Debugged something that blew away my mind on how it works internally..
DynamoDBMapper made my day today.
What could have been more better gift during the super special sweet valentine's week!!!!!
I ❤️ debugging.

Last weak I tried to use Linux Arch on my VM. The only Linux distribution I'm used to is Ubuntu and the fist time I launched Arch I completely forgot that it was " do it yourself ". And that the ISO isn't actually a fancy installer like the Ubuntu one.
So I started following a guide and found out that the arch wiki is actually the way to go.
I searched for 1 hour how to change the keyboard to swiss-french which was actually pretty simple.
After that exhausting research that made me realise how ignorant I am with UNIX universe, I finally tried to install the thing.
When I was done installing, it didn't want to boot after I restarted. I got stuck at the 'Booting...' screen. After a few tries I lost all my energy and motivation.
Tl;dr: Tried Arch Linux, realised I had no idea, gave up after a few tries3 -
So me and my team created an android application for "pet lost and found " . So one of my friend decided to troll us..

13.5 million steps on my little Fitbit Zip named Dino. Long walk last weekend and lost him. Backtracked a mile and found him. So happy. But car had run him over and crushed Dino. So sad.
Carefully operated on him and although his screen (face) was smashed he had one more synch (breath) in him with me holding his little metal prongs.
Gave him a little funeral. He will forever have a cherished spot in my sock drawer.
I went to the Fitbit store and Sally his little sister was born to carry on his legacy. -
Today I was orders to check out one of our applications. Accounting said that the Twilio bill was constantly increasing even if we do not get any new clients. In 10 min I found out what is the problem. All calls are recorded and stored in Twilio, which charges handsomely for such service.
Developers instead of downloading those recording to our data lake, use Twilio as storage, because no coding was involved.
Company lost around 30k dollars this year and around 10k-20k in previous ones, because someone was lazy to spend few days to download mp3 from url. -
How can Javascript, one of the MOST WIDELY used and MATURE languages with A MILLION CANCEROUS FRAMEWORKS, NOT have a basic collections class? Are data structures not important in Javascript?
I've been struggling all night trying to get Sets working - surprise, they're utterly useless in Javascript cause you can't define the set comparator.
I just lost it when I found out THERE ISN'T EVEN A QUEUE. WT-ACTUAL-F15 -

Their strength and speed, however, remain result of the application of a system with many rules.

One tip for all the vim people out there: make a backup of your .vimrc, in at least 3 different places, my hd got fucked up and I lost mine, and when I tried to use the backup one from my pen drive o found out that my pen drive was dead, now it's been 3 hours since o started recreating the vimrc, and it's not even close1

Pretty much after couple of years of entering the real world I lost faith, not because I found myself not able to cope and learn but the amount of chaos and closed minded people that you face everyday pushed me to pursue my MBA.
Now I'm slowly drifting away to the management part because I've had enough with this, its just not worth it. I'll keep development for self entertainment in personal projects, and nothing more. -
Lost one day mounting my CNC.
Still on the basics...
Found out that I baddly welded the two fucking easy drivers and made a bad connection I can't undo now.
So the drivers are always on and stepping :(

Like age 8?
As a kid I really liked flash games and animations and wanted to get into it. I couldn't do flash, it looked too complicated but I found a little software by the name od KoolMoves that was just a simpler flash animation tool.
I did a bunch of shitty stick figure animations in it (hello to everyone from stick figure death theatre) but eventually I realized that I can make it do things (interactive menus, choose your story kinda things, move the player around, shoot...!)
I fell in love with AS1 and later AS2.0 and made bunch of demos and proof of concepts for systems and games. Most are lost to time and datarot by now)
Age 12
Eventually I found out I can make the entire Windows machine do what I want using first Batch files and later Visual Basic script (made a skype bot!) At this point I was also really into graphics and logo/web design
Age 15 - 20 or so
Then it was pretty natural to move to actual Visual Basic, then C# and finally I to C++. And I had the C family in my heart forever. I managed to get a but into 3D graphics too and got a part-time in archviz
Even by this point I never believed I could be a programmer as a profession. I thought of it just as something I love, but have no chance getting into compared to some of the names out there. I half expected to be either doing graphics (cause I found it simple at the time) or some shitty random job in an office.
20+
Finally I decided to go to uni and study software development, see if I can touch the future I always dreamed of! And... Well... I found out more than 80% of the people there never touch a language up until now and most people are just as retarded as I thought..
For a while I also worked as a game designer (still not being comfortable calling myself a programmer, so I chose a non programming position) but I ended up going into the code and improving and fixing game designer tools (it was unity and C#)
After seeing actual programmers at work in a company, and talking to a bunch of them I realized I already have everything I need to do this seriously and with that experience out of the way I breezed through uni, learned to love Linux and landed a proper job :)
I kinda hope my experience with long lasting self doubt will be useful for someone -
So I found the reason of kernel panic, my laptop's hdd is fucked, lost all the data. Now using a live usb until I get a replacement. Silver lining is I won't install windows for dual boat and replace elementaryOS with arch linux. I want a proper fight now.1

Transferred a lot of important files in between PC with a 32 GB thumbdrive. One time, when I needed it the most, it couldn't read. It had the original up-to-date information on everything. Backup files were old and found in either emails, in another PC somewhere else and on an ex-colleagues laptop that, due to poor office management, lost track of where that laptop is.

It was about 2:30am.. The darkness had been dominating the outside for a while, and I was having issues with my partitions on my CentOS server. Yup that's correct. I think.
I really wanted to go to bed. Last thing I had to do, was re-allocate some space from centos-home to centos-root. But I fucked up, of course I did.
After about half an hour of making food and trying different stuff to solve the "Can't read superblock error" error, I found an answer that just lead to "Can't read secondary superblock error, sorry".
At least they apologize now lol.
I ended up trashing the centos-home volume (is volume and partition the same ?) and just smashing it all onto centos-root. I lost some data, but screw that, stuff is working and I'm not going to bed.
Yeah, stuff is working. I hope. No errors encountered yet.
Moral of the story: Home partition isn't needed and it's okay to kill it1 -
I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.
Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.
New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.
But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.
Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :34 -
I AM SO ANGRY! Today my job fired me for the stupidest reason!! A while back I lost my job a (non-important) client for having an "overactive temper" so my boss made me begin taking VRTAM (or virtual reality therapy for Anger Management). Well I attended the first couple things but decided to stop because they were definitely stealing my information. I don't know what sketchy website they found for that but as a dev I can tell when they are taking my personal information. Also there's no way it works I attended a couple sessions and nothing helped because I DONT HAVE ANGER ISSUES!!! Anyway my job found out I had been skipping them and when they confronted me they avoided my concerns and just fired me... Haven't told my wife yet, she's going to be so mad.8

Hello fellow ranters ,
A few weeks ago we started working from home because of the Coronavirus, I have personally found it very hard to perform at work and have lost all motivation to do anything other than the bare minimum required by the company , around a week ago we were officially furloughed , my question to you guys is : what are some things I can do to exercise my brain and make sure my skills stay sharp, I am a JavaScript , node.js dev , I’m talking coding challenges and other things , also can anyone else relate ?8 -
After far too many hours dealing with unproperly behaving click listener and lost references, I just found out that the real problem was with poorly handled async DB access.
Frustrated but happy to find the problem source.
I believe everyone have the same from time to time. At least now I can share my feels with you.
But... time to move forward! -
In a similar vein to @Awlex's story, I lost 800GB of anime in a disk head crash. To this day, I have no idea how it happened.
We were getting our house painted and so my anime hard drive was left untouched for about a month, and then when I tried to connect it I found the disk head had crashed.
And then, a second time when I had managed to amass another 400GB of anime and something went wrong while I was trying to delete some other folders through Ubuntu's GUI (yeah, I know) and my anime folder was accidentally shift-deleted. T-T
Now my collection is back up at 300GB and I only use command-line to delete multiple folders now. -
TLDR: I wanted to change email to new one, but I could not remember which one I have
currently. I found out an API in DevRant JS files for email verification and used
it to find it out.
So, I am moving from Gmail to Protonmail Pro, absolutely love their service.
I wanted to do same on Devrant but I could not figure out my current mail for
"I lost my password" form. My Password Manager have only login saved, and profile does
not show email address.
I thought that this user information is stored on server so it have to be some way to retrieve it. I dug
in source code and I've found:
`<div class="signup-title">Verify Your Email</div>`
Which has event assigned to function which uses jQuery.ajax (love it btw :D) to call:
`url: "/api/users/me/resend-confirm",`
This seems like worth a shot. Few copy-pastes and one ajax call later:

Ohh... really....
So I bricked my phone last week and had to factory restore to get it working so lost all my apps and data...
There were a few I created for myself and use but I don't do Android dev anymore (and Google decided to remove all my apps from the appstore but then again I don't care, no one uses them)
Anyway I couldn't find a good replacement on the app store.... so i pulled up the source code from my back up drive... and luckily found the compiled APKs too :)
But thought well heck might as well just publish the code but apparently... it was already published...2 -
So I was looking for some real-time dashboard app using vue, tried searching for it on google and found some article.

Last Saturday, I came across a fellow techie at a house party. As soon as he found out I am a developer, the question
"What is your favorite programming language?"
came bursting not even a nano-second after I told him.
Anyone else finds this super cringe?
I believe that people who dig deep trenches in such a topic will be the root cause for the next software crisis. I mean, look at Javascript. In one of my later posts, literally noone could give me a reason to not think Javascript is a dumpster fire. And yet it spread out like a malignant tumor.
To verify not all is lost, I quickly googled any databases written in JS, and luckily just found one archived repo and nothing else. Because Im calling it, once Javascript reaches the database layer, it's terminal.4 -
Before tyranny we had homes we could count on being there.
Before the destruction of all values we had family as a backup if we lost our homes, and while we found another job and home.
Before facebook we had photo shop, dvd's and hard drives.
But tyranny took away our homes and our family, facebook and google delete our photos and the servants of tyranny steal our hard drives and dvds.

found an old config file on my external drive for all my torrent files. awyisss. my SSD died out of nowhere last year and I thought I lost all my torrent configs! I had hundreds of TV series and stuff and I kept track which ones I watched and didn't in the client. so when the SSD died I lost all my knowledge of my progress. but I found this config file just now and imported it. omg booyah. I think I got one show since this backup. godsend
decided to export settings again and it said I can set it on a schedule. go to the scheduler tab in the settings and I have no clue what's going on. nothing about exporting settings, it just has schedule configurations that seem to conflict. then I realized. the main client maybe has a schedule tab icon. bam am right. so in settings I turn on scheduler and then the main app gives me access to the scheduler tab and if I go there I can click "add" and then I can schedule regular config backups
bruh this UI is so jank. but it actually is impressive. because. while I have experience in designing websites, when I played around with making a GUI in rust, which would be native, I have absolutely no clue how to make an app on this tech. now I'm looking at this complex torrent client with its bazillion features in absolute awe.
*takes notes*
I can only aspire to be so genius as to allow you to turn on and remove tabs in the settings menu. now it makes sense why all the windows always had awkwardly sized panels. this genius man.
however did he come up with that?! ALL THESE NEW STANDARDS
honestly somehow it never occurred to me that native apps and web apps would have totally different ergonomics. I feel like I've found some kind of lost art from the ancient world. aaaaaaa -
I need an advise for my capstone project. I'm planning to make an online booking system for a ferry company. Planning to make it for android and ios and maybe for web too. Did some research and found about ionic. Looks amazing but not sure if it's the right tech to use for my plan. Also about the payment gateway, I want the customers to pay on the app or the website directly without redirecting them to other website. Not really sure if I can use paypal with this, also i need the system to accept mastercard and visa.
I did the research, so please no hate, I'm not asking for the code. I just want to know the right tech to use. I'm just super confused and lost right now.8 -
I'm Paul Ryan, and I'm excited to tell you that I've finally found a trustworthy cyber expert who deals with lost bitcoin issues/recovery. I lost all of my money after being misled into investing in stolen bitcoin a few months ago. Despite the fact that I was in a bad circumstance, my sadness was short-lived because a coworker had told me about (recoveryexpert at rescueteam dot com), a company that deals with Recovery Solution. I was able to reclaim the money that had been taken with the help of Recovery Expert. I was able to regain my $155,000 after being informed by another group of hackers that it had been permanently lost.2

I may have inadvertently gotten my old university's Comp Sci System Services addicted to CTF wargames. oops.
I also just found out that you can prevent a more command from automatically exiting on completion only by limiting the size of the window of your terminal. I lost a good 4 hours of trying literally every ssh command combination I could, when all I had to do was use a small terminal screen. Whoever designed this last challenge should be given an award and then shot.3 -

The foundations I build aren’t just physical structures; they represent my commitment to my family and community. However, everything changed when I became a victim of a cryptocurrency scam that left me devastated. It all began innocently enough. Like many others, I was intrigued by the potential of cryptocurrency investments. I researched and ultimately decided to work with a broker who appeared reputable at first glance. Any ASP.NET Core experts here? I'm using the localization code found from asp.net core documentation and it works fine except that if I let the browser open and idle for like 15 minutes and then refresh the page it always returns an english version. If I refresh again it goes back to the chosen language and works as long as I use it. Same thing locally and on server. Any ideas what this could be related to? I'm lost :(

so.
i had a stupid idea that'd let me do a project i had planned and abandoned a while back after getting experience with the new project.
problem: detect and manage empty space in a massive file, allow adding data to those empty spaces from files, and fill in a table in a designated empty space with where dynamically-loaded things are. In Python.
I tried JUST detecting empty space, and Python would break out of loops for no reason at all just at random. "run bottom to top through this file until a non-00h byte is found" would either break out of the loop way earlier than should be possible (8 or 9 bytes into a 32KB empty file) or run way into non-zerofill areas before breaking the loop.
Am I just retarded? Is this more Python conditional fuckery? i'm so lost that it's just on hold for now (and i think i lost that script too) -
EXPERT IN STOLEN CRYPTOCURRENCY RECOVERY- RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY
My all time dream was growing my savings through forex trading, drawn by the allure of high returns and the promise of financial growth. When I discovered an online platform that claimed to offer consistent returns with minimal risk, it seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up. The website was professionally designed, customer service was responsive, and the initial returns on my investments were encouraging. Lured by these assurances, I invested a significant amount—$760,000 over several months. At first, everything appeared to be going as planned. My account was credited with gains, and I was even able to withdraw some profits, which reinforced my belief in the platform's legitimacy. This initial success only fueled my confidence, making the subsequent events all the more devastating. Then, without any prior warning or explanation, the situation took a drastic turn. One day, I found myself unable to access the platform. My account balance had mysteriously vanished, and attempts to reach the company were met with silence. The website, which had once been sleek and functional, was now inaccessible. My heart sank as I realized the gravity of the situation—I had been scammed. The shock and despair that followed were overwhelming. The realization that I had lost everything I had invested was paralyzing. The sense of betrayal and helplessness was compounded by the apparent finality of the situation—no access to my funds, no way to contact the company, and no clear recourse for recovering my losses. Just when I was about to give up hope, I stumbled upon a service called Rapid Digital Recovery. Initially, I was skeptical, having been burned once already. However, Rapid Digital Recovery presented itself as a specialized firm with a track record of recovering funds lost to online scams. They offered a structured process that included an initial assessment of my case, followed by steps aimed at tracing and recovering the lost assets. I decided to reach out to them, sharing all the relevant information about the platform and my investments. The team at Rapid Digital Recovery reviewed my case thoroughly and provided me with a plan of action. They explained their process, which involved legal measures, digital forensics, and negotiations with financial institutions to track down and reclaim the lost funds.
