Just got this portrait monitor.
Gotta say, I love all that real estate.

My boss literally spends half an hour finger-fucking his phone on the mobile site to find "bugs", that I can't replicate. A combination like: swipe, pinch, landscape, portrait, back pinch, open new tab, close tab, ash cigarette on phone, dunk in toilet, dry, double tap... Aha I've found a bug, there's 0.5 pixel line of space between the bag header and the browser bar.

What my Clients don't know:

I turn my 2nd 27inch screen in portrait orientation before they come in. And turn it back when they leave.

Somehow it impresses them.

Who else is coding with a portrait monitor?

Am I the only one who thinks monitors turned to portrait looks dumb and can’t possibly be more useful? The number one reason people give when I ask is that they can fit more code on the screen. I don’t know about you but I don’t have the ability to glance at an entire screen of code in portrait or landscape and understand it immediately.

I hate my tablet...
It is a giveaway from my sister and it is a bit damaged. It's unresponsive on a straight line from the one side on the middle of the screen to the other.
It's an old tablet, so it has not much memory and it lags a lot, especially during app updates.
To "work" with it, I have to switch from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa, because many apps put dialogs exactly in the middle of the screen, on the unresponsive part.
But what I hate most about this situation is that there are apps that are locked on portrait mode and I can't access them... It wouldn't hurt much if all apps could rotate from one mode to the other!!!
I'm on limited funds for quite a while, so I'm stuck with it for now. Meh... ☹

I just finished something!

Okay, it's just a quickly thrown together python script that takes a directory of portraits, centers and scales the face closest to the center of the image and creates a gif. Made it for a friend who is doing this one portrait each day thing.

Nothing big at all, but damn does it feel good anyways 😁

My verdict on display ports? From 1 to 10 10 being horrible as fuck I'd say it's about the same amount of times my fucking monitor went black and I almost had a siezure.

This may have nothing to do with programming but honestly, it fucking sucks. I've read so much online about how DP is better but no. I've never had a problem with HDMI, but HERE COMES ALONG THE MAGICAL DP. I was playing a FPS game and my left monitor went black over and over and I almost had a siezure. So I umplug the DP cable and my game fucking switches to my right monitor which is portrait mode, AND IT WASN'T EVEN SIDEWAYS GAMING... IT WAS PORTRAIT ON ONE FUCKING MONITOR... PORTRAIT.

I HAD TO PLAY THE REST OF THE GAME LIKE THAT. IN PORTRAIT MODE. THE DOOR FRAMES IN THE GAME WERE SO SKINNY IT LOOKED LIKE PAPER COULDN'T FIT THROUGH IT.

So one day I got an email from a client just before I'm about to go home saying she wanted to update some images on the homepage slider. "No big deal" I thought. So she sends me the images and two of them are squares and the other is a portrait. All of which have phone camera quality and are way too small for the desktop version of the slider. I trim and rearrange the two squares so that fit but the other one was hopeless. I cropped it poorly and hoped she didn't care about it too much.

Of course it was the most important picture she wanted.

I ask the client to send me a higher quality picture which would fit in the slider and she sends me a picture which is even taller and less wide.

"Great," obviously at this point I figure she must be checking on just her cell phone and that's why a tall picture makes more sense to her.

And of course now she needs this before tomorrow morning so now I'm staying late to edit images.

Since she's obviously only looking on her cell phone and she's made me stay so late to do this I just take the tall image and mirror it so that it looks like there are two products side by side and it fits well on mobile screens.

Ugh.

Worked for many hours with CSS to make a website look good in landscape mode and what's the solution I came with? Show a black screen asking the user to use portrait...

Defeated again by CSS.

I wrote a virtual machine, and just to fuck myself harder, I make the decision of applying some fancy dumbass theories of mine. This translates to a piece of shit modular design that works exactly as intended, but constantly gives me vietnam flashbacks to the horrifying, multiple concurrent instances of my younger mind being incessantly turbo-raped by the dozen object-obsessed pedophiles that I initially studied under.

I don't know shit about app development but I'm pretty sure that is an option.

Another thing about Android 9:
I miss the thing where shortcuts for settings, wifi, bluetooth etc are separate from the notification drawer and you can pick by dragging down on the left or right side of the screen. Because yes, I have a 19.5x9 aspect ratio, but have you ever tried to read long notifications in portrait mode?!? Notifications are important! They need more than 1.5cm (!) of space. Yes! I measured! And this is ridiculous!

Finally turned one of my monitors portrait. Is this a right of passage of some sort?

My main problem with programming on android phones(not for android) is it's keyboard, almost none of default layouts don't have the needed buttons(i.e. ; [ ] ( ) ...), I managed to find a good one "Hacker's Keyboard", 5 rows almost every button(even shift, ctrl and arrow keys). But here's the problem with this: it's buttons width is very low on portrait mode, on landscape, even if you're used to lanscape typing, you won't be able to see shit because it's covering most of screen.
"Hey, what about an external keyboard", well it's not totally a bad idea, but you would need a stand for your phone, and if it's connecting via usb and not bt, you have to buy a usb2[yourPort] convertion, besides I want to hold my phone while typing "How about you make you make your own bt/usb attachable mini keyboard for your phone.", Wow that's a very good idea, it would take maybe a year to make it, but maybe instead of making the whole thing myself I can buy a mini keyboard and make the attaching part myself, it can't be THAT hard, right? Need a 3D printer(√), need time(have alot of it), need to design it(no problem), now start... uhhh nevermind, who am I kiddin', I won't be able to make such a thing, just use that "Hacker's Keyboard".

A guy on YouTube posted in a GraphQL tutorial about his CSS issue. He asked about why a certain background for a website that he is creating only looks good on a phone but not on his desktop. I asked him to put the code on either jsfiddle or codepen but he still put the code in the comments, only the CSS part. I kept telling him to place it on those two sites, eventually he did. I looked at the pen and guess what? The picture is a portrait one... He wants to use CSS to make it look good, I don't know how he is gonna achieve that but good luck. I am done with him, stopped commenting.

So, I was using YT on my phone now since I'm at my family over the holidays. So far so good.

I just noticed, that google apparently cant even make apps good. FFS, I'm playing a YT vid (fullscreen, landscape) and then close fullscreen.

People usually use their phones in portrait mode. People often taking vertical photos and videos. People read books, and every book has portrait pages. Almost every website has unused space on left and right.
But when people see my vertical monitors they all like: oh man, you are weirdo, that's awful and uncomfortable.

I have three monitors at work, I used to have 2 in portrait and one landscape in the middle, during the last months I switched to the opposite (2 landscape and 1 portrait)

In my home I use 2 1080p displays landscape

A new insight that I got today while using one of these apps: "How can I rotate an image after it's loaded?"

Very easy apparently...
As long as you keep track of the current angle, just reload and set a Rotation property to (current + 90) % 360...

if rotation is enabled and you open a rant keeping your phone in landscape position, app goes landscape for no reason and comes back to portrait.
