Got this from a recruiter:
We are looking for a **Senior Android Developer/Lead** at Philadelphia PA
Hiring Mode: Contract
Must have skills:
· 10-12 years mobile experience in developing Android applications
· Solid understanding of Android SDK on frameworks such as: UIKit, CoreData, CoreFoundation, Network Programming, etc.
· Good Knowledge on REST Ful API and JSON Parsing
· Good knowledge on multi-threaded environment and grand central dispatch
· Advanced object-oriented programming and knowledge of design patterns
· Ability to write clean, well-documented, object-oriented code
· Ability to work independently
· Experience with Agile Driven Development
· Up to date with the latest mobile technology and development trends
· Passion for software development- embracing every challenge with a drive to solve it
· Engaging communication skills
My response:
I am terribly sorry but I am completely not interested in working for anyone who might think that this is a job description for an Android engineer.
1. Android was released in September 2008 so finding anyone with 10 years experience now would have to be a Google engineer.
2. UIKit, CoreData, CoreFoundation are all iOS frameworks
3. Grand Central Dispatch is an iOS mechanism for multithreading and is not in Android
4. There are JSON parsing frameworks, no one does that by hand anymore

Me at 2:00 AM be like:
“WHY THE **FOOK** IS THIS CONSTRAINT BREAKING???”
“WHY IS XCODE SUCH A PIECE OF SHIT?”
“BROKE THE PROJECT FILES... HERE WE FUCKING GO AGAIN.”
“MEMORY ERRORS? H O W”23 -
A added bonus of writing in UIKit and in Swift is the automatic macOS support. Yes, this is the devRant rewrite working on macOS, fully featured. And while this still requires some work and some fixes involving window resizing and how to handle image resizing, this is surprisingly usable for almost no dedicated macOS code!
(This post was sent using the AltRant client on macOS)11 -
Apple 2018: we integrated uikit with Mac apps so now it will be way much easier to program for mac
Me: OMG THIS IS AMAIZING
Apple: all of these apps are now running on Mac with uikit
Me: yes!
Apple: this will be available to you developers in 2019 : )
Me: BICH WHAT THE FUCK?! -
YEARS of practice. I had my ups and downs. I learned myself, left it myself early on, came back to it half a year later, continued since. Figured out that web development is not the hell I wanted and quickly fell in love with iOS development in Swift. Been riding on the wind ever since, learning something new every single day.
Today I made something that some time ago took me about 3 weeks in less than an hour. If that’s not an improvement, I don’t know what that is.
Practice makes perfect, don’t forget that. Although it sounds ridiculously cheesy and shit, this is how it goes.
I’m getting drafted tomorrow. Well, this is not exactly a full on draft and joining the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) right NAO, it’s what we call a rough draft: I am having a psychotechnical examination so the military can understand how much I need to go to a cybersecurity unit instead of going to Gaza LMAO.2 -
Aren't you, software engineer, ashamed of being employed by Apple? How can you work for a company that lives and shit on the heads of millions of fellow developers like a giant tech leech?
Assuming you can find a sounding excuse for yourself, pretending its market's fault and not your shitty greed that lets you work for a company with incredibly malicious product, sales, marketing and support policies, how can you not feel your coders-pride being melted under BILLIONS of complains for whatever shitty product you have delivered for them?
Be it a web service that runs on 1980 servers with still the same stack (cough cough itunesconnect, membercenter, bug tracker, etc etc etc etc) incompatible with vast majority of modern browsers around (google at least sticks a "beta" close to it for a few years, it could work for a few decades for you);
be it your historical incapacity to build web UI;
be it the complete lack of any resemblance of valid documentation and lets not even mention manuals (oh you say that the "status" variable is "the status of the object"? no shit sherlock, thank you and no, a wwdc video is not a manual, i don't wanna hear 3 hours of bullshit to know that stupid workaround to a stupid uikit api you designed) for any API you have developed;
be it the predatory tactics on smaller companies (yeah its capitalism baby, whatever) and bending 90 degrees with giants like Amazon;
be it the closeness (christ, even your bugtracker is closed and we had to come up with openradar to share problems that you would anyway ignore for decades);
be it a desktop ui api that is so old and unmaintained and so shitty, but so shitty, that you made that cancer of electron a de facto standard for mainstream software on macos;
be it a IDE that i am disgusted to even name, xcrap, that has literally millions of complains for the same millions of issues you dont even care to answer to or even less try to justify;
be it that you dont disclose your long term plans and then pretend us to production-test and workaround-fix your shitty non-production ready useless new OS features;
be it that a nervous breakdown on a stupid little guy on the other side of the planet that happens to have paid to you dozens of thousands of euros (in mandatory licences and hardware) to actually let you take an indecent cut out of his revenues cos there is no other choice in a monopoly regime, matter zero to you;
Assuming all of these and much more:
How can you sleep at night with all the screams of the devs you are exploiting whispering in you mind? Are all the money your earn worth?
** As someone already told you elsewhere, HAVE SOME FUCKING PRIDE, shitty people AND WRITE THE FUCKING DOCS AND FIX THE FUCKING BUGS you lazy motherfuckers, your are paid more than 99.99% of people on earth, move your fucking greasy little fingers on that fucking keyboard. **
PT2: why the fuck did you remove the ESC key from your shitty keyboards you fuckshits? is it cos autocomplete is slower than me searching the correct name of a function on stackoverflow and hence ESC key is useless? at least your hardware colleagues had the decency of admitting their error and rolling back some of the uncountable "questionable "hardware design choices (cough cough ...magic mouse... cough golden charging cables not compatible with your own devices.. cough )?12 -
I am almost done with the recyclable Rant View structure, but now I understand the matters at hand.
Dynamic height UICollectionViewCell’s.
I am not even using UIKit, I’m using SwiftUI.
Welp, off to StackOverflow and days of UIViewRepresentables shenanigans.
Fuck.3 -
Not 3 weeks have passed and I am almost at where I was in the SwiftUI version of my app but this time in UIKit. Conclusion? SwiftUI slowed me down, significantly.10
-
Worst?
When I had to restart my entire progress on the devRant iOS rewrite because I had to switch from SwiftUI to UIKit.
Best?
It took me less than 3 weeks to come to the point in development where I abandoned SwiftUI. The app was already pretty fucking big but I managed to remake it completely in less than 3 weeks. It is my single most proudest achievement that I ever got. I didn’t give up and I powered through. I think it’s safe to assume that I am decent in iOS app development :D6 -
Uikit is probably the worst CSS framework out there. PHP is the slowest server side ever. My company use both. 😞2
-
This is it, today I am getting one of my wisdom teeth removed. Wish me luck! Also, if I’m talking here, I just wanna say: I am officially moving away from SwiftUI and switching to UIKit. I’ve been constantly building my way around SwiftUI, constantly bypassing SwiftUI and adding UIKit layers around it. It has been such a headache using SwiftUI to construct such complicated views and I figured that the pace of development has been rapidly declining due to SwiftUI. I am going to rewrite the whole app again but in UIKit (it’s still native).
(Also, Floyd, sorry for the mistag again. :P)6 -
A client wanted his site to be finished earlier. The boss said ok if the client would pay more, and he did. However, a FE dev got sick (virus infection he said) and would have to rest for an extended period of time. The PM came in yesterday and said, "Alex (me), we are running out of time so you will have to take (FE dev's name)'s position because you said that you learned basic html/css when you were in high school." The PM left and close the door before I can turn my head away from the screen and say something (I was like WTF?). One of my BE colleague, who had been asked to do similar sh**t before when a FE guy got sick, pat on my shoulder and said, "Alex, you have won the lottery this time." Q.A.Q..I have just finished a navbar with 4 tabs using Uikit, it took me 90 min already.2
-
I can't believe how simple SwiftUI is compared to UIKit.
Unbelievable how Apple screwed up with the simplicity (or lack thereof) with UIKit.1 -
Anyone with good/certain experience in using UIkit?
I have started using it for one of my client's projects. There is no one I know of using it. So it will be awesome, if anyone can spare few minutes and discuss with me. (or answer my stupid questions :P)1 -
Fixing sudden crashes in UIKit is a damn breeze, I already fixed the 2 glaring issues I stumbled upon.2
-
If you want to experience the definition of hell, do iOS Development and use their only allowed IDE called "Xcode". It was made by Satan himself. You're welcome.9
-
I needed to do some maintenance on some of the text views in my app because they were sticking to the center and not to the leading edge (aka left).
This is harder than it sounds like.1 -
It's just taken me AN HOUR to work out how to programmatically centre something in UIKit 😡
Mutter grumble autoresizingmask grump moan I suppose I should learn autolayout whinge gripe.1 -
I've been reading some stuff related to CoreAnimation and then I asked myself this question:
"Is UIKit = User-Interface Kit or User-Interaction Kit?"
Given that all the drawing and content representation is already done by the backing layer (CALayer). The only responsibility UIView adds to the underlying CALayer is the ability to handle user interaction.1 -
Hey is there any iOS dev who can help me with this?
Is there any way to trigger a context menu in UIKit with only tapping the view instead of tap and holding? 🤔
