I worked on a company with an open floor plan where you would get a desk assigned depending on the type of project you worked on. All the desks were modular an you would get a desk with a cube with a set of drawers, or with a locker-like cube with a single space and door. When this guy started, he was assigned a drawer set. Around the third day he went around the office asking anyone with a locker to trade cubes. He finally got one. He filled it up with liquor bottles, cans of juice and several types of glasses. He would prepare himself cocktails during the work day. Once he was enjoying a Coca-Cola and whisky mix when the HR boss came around to ask what he was up. He offered the guy a drink.4

Should I be afraid right now?
Dev: can I swap out an existing UI framework from this codebase for a completely different one, because it doesn't do the small enhancement I've been tasked to do?
Me: ...............
please lord, give me strength in these pressing times.rant what could go wrong it's going to be a good week it's only monday @c0d4 needs a whisky mondayitis has begun6 -
Bugfix. About two years ago. Old C# codebase, MVC project... A fucking piece of it was sending money to the wrong Dynamics account, FOR TWO FUCKING YEARS.
Anyway...4 -
Odd things that non-technically-inclined people do, say, or believe:
"Back in my day we didn't have our faces planted in cell phones!" True, but they sure did love them some magazines and newspapers.
"I don't need internet! I need that 'wee-fee'" -- from my wife's stories about one of her clients, who wanted to set up WiFi.
A restaurant owner who, in 2017 mind you, refuses to upgrade his phone above a touch-tone with a handheld receiver.
When my wife, son, and I were visiting her aunt and uncle in Florida, her uncle kept asking her help on how to configure his smart phone. She's a saleswoman and I'm a computer engineer. Not complaining, just an observation. Actually I'm glad because I can avoid a million questions that I won't ever have time for.
When someone in line at the store causes a glitch in the chip reader because they don't know how to follow directions on-screen. Then they blame "those damn computers!" during a verybquick reboot.
People who enjoy sunshine. I don't understand this obsession that non-technical people have with sunny days. Maybe if I were on a tropical beach drinking whisky all day, but I live in NYS so...
When I'm describing a computer program I put a lot of effort into, only to have the conversation derailed adter thirty seconds by an hour-long family gossip section.2 -
First check if anybody else has done it.
Second check if theres a convoluted way to chain existing projects to do it.
Third buy some whisky and down half of it.
Fourth plan it out
Fifth create directory and open vim1 -
Not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved.
Just spent 5 years trying the get into this class. Studying and asking and getting recommendations. I knew it had less than a 5% pass rate but it's all that I've been aiming for for years.
Finally got into it, and spent 4 months working my ass off. Today I got told that I'm maybe being dropped. And honestly, as disappointed as I am, and I might need a new dream to aim for, I'm actually pretty okay with it.
I've been so stressed and annoyed and unhappy lately. I was starting to debate if this is even what I want. And for the first night in a while I can just drink whisky and not worry about the next test or doing classwork at midnight instead of sleeping.... I can just relax and whatever happens happens. I can't control how tomorrow goes.
Not sure if "oof. I need a drink" or "thank god, lets celebrate with a drink!"3 -
Do not drink a lot of alcohol when you are severely dehydrated.
Much regret.
Must find rag to fill with cold water, wring out, and place over eyes to reacquire that sweet, sweet unconsciousness.
Unrelated, if I haven’t told y’all that you should never Chumbawamba, you should never Chumbawamba. I did it once in uni and it was a super bad time. (Chumbawamba is what I call using Tubthumping as an instruction set. Do not take a whisky drink, then a vodka drink, than a lager drink, then a cider drink, etc etc.)6 -
I'M OUT OF WHISKY!

I guess no home project for tonight...4 -
Final day on this project, tonight I'll get drunk to forget about the backlog since client didn't hire me longer ( consultant).
I hate leaving unfinished code.
Monday I start my next project, which is refactoring. .Net code to .net core.
Here is to hoping it doesn't rely too much on unsupported 3rd party libraries.
Cheers fellow devs, have a good weekend. -
so I did dry january...
conclusions:
- perhaps a slight amount of more energy, but then I just work way more than i would anyway, since there is nothing else to do
- anxiety / stress not really affected or reduced
- sleep not noticably improved either
so overall I don't think I really get any of the so called "benefits" that the health gurus claim 🤡
needless to say I will be enjoying some scotch tonight6 -
I drank so much whisky tonight I can't see straight
no proud of it, but at least i don't lie like all the social media fucks
at least i have that14 -
Nothing better than stay at home during a thunderstorm, writing some shit in VS and drinking some whisky
-
Has anyone ever coded drank? Did you break anything? I mostly drink a glass of whisky whenever I solve a bug that tortured me...3

Non-dev: Good science, tech, and/or video game inspired drinks, whisky-based or otherwise?

Continuing my last random post. (Please don't bother to take a look at it.)
But, hey you. Yes you, get yourself one beer/whisky and cheers!!
Why? Because my first django project ran successfully in staging environment!! Ok, There were few little bugs. But I fixed most of them.
I don't drink. So please go and enjoy on behalf of me.
And don't drink too much. Keep one bottle for production deployment.
P.S. This is just a beginning of the new journey! Still, lot to learn and experience.1 -
Was reading the voice command rant and got curious, what do you guys think about the brain-machine-interface? Will it ever happen?
I would love it but also have some fears. Being able to control devices just by thought would be a huge time saver. But data mining is getting out of hand and that is scaring me. Companies would be able to analyze a lot.
Now they 'just' know what I am buying and which sites I am visiting.
If they know what I am thinking, Amazon would suggest me rubber gloves, body bags and whisky.7 -
lets see...
would i like the glenfidditch 12 year for 45 EUR?
or the laphroaig 10 year for 50 EUR?
😂
seems like a no-brainer to me (and trust me, i have NO brain)
