Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."

I'm so God damn happy.

She asked me to do her a favor and take a look at her laptop, it’s been playing up for sometime now. So, I went. She took me to her bedroom where the laptop was, and the conversation continued on topic romance, sex and girlfriend. You know what happened next…Yes.

For the first time in my life I fixed a hot cheeks computer and got laid.

What was wrong? There was a malware in her computer which was opening random websites.

Last teacher rant from me and this one is about: my mentor.

Let's call him Bob.

He was a person who'd always be ready to help you out, did some lessons on bullying and the effects of it, stood by me many times when I'd have hard times with something I'd trouble and one of the most important things, he had a very good sense of humor!

Also, since I always wore a suit (still do), he introduced 'FaF' day, aka, Fancy as Fuck day. Every Wednesday the guys who wanted to would come in suits.

I'm a developer in germany and of course, everyone in this company has a keyboard with the QWERTZ layout, which ( you all know ) sucks especially when using it do write code.
So i asked my boss, if i can get a keyboard in QWERTY layout, because of the given reasons.
He replied nicely: Yes, I will ask the hardware management.
5 minutes later i got a mail: Here is your harware order, you will get it soon.

It's not much, but that was fast and nice :)

That moment you write some magnificent code and everyone is sleeping so you can't share it with anyone but you feel like the room should turn into an exciting musical where you win an award. (Best code can ONLY be written between the hours of 12am and 6am)

The next day, you try to explain to your significant other (user) how amazing this new genius way of doing that "thing" was, in hopes of sharing your excitement but all you get is a "you're such a dork" instead.

You may even try to share it with a coworker or fellow programmer but somehow they just don't see how exciting it is for you.

Boss challenged me to get something done before a demo and he'd give me tomorrow off paid. I completed the task on the time and at the end of the day told him I was leaving for another position. He was totally calm, cool, professional and still gave me tomorrow off paid. I don't know how that happened. Life is good.

Today is my age++ day !
And with it came the end of school, a new job in an awesome company, a new life in a new city !

So, Today was the last day of my internship.
and it was a great last day but everything was fine until.

I started my computer and for some reason it got caught up in boot. It didnt start Nautilus.

So i asked a Senior Dev for help. Nice as these Devs are, he helped me look for reasons. And we found them. My ubuntu hadnt had enough disk space to start. (On a side note there is nothing but Atom Firefox and a few files on there.) So we looked for the biggest files in the system and found them. Syslog was 40 Gb big. And if you think that is shocking behold. Because Syslog.1 was 290Gb big.

Not really a rant but a Story.

It has come to my attention that, I @C0D4 have become an addict.

This is something I thought I could fight. Resist the urge to become attached to my substance of choice in the early days and not have it compromise my every day life.

But how wrong I was, my addiction grew over time and my ability to resist the urge to peek at a ++ spam wall, or get back into a discussion at the mention of my name, read more of the great stories that remind us all, we are not alone and many of us are on a similar journey.

So, devRant my one true drug of choice, Today is a significant milestone on this path of corruption, my 1024th (1kib) day!

Nothing quite like spending a day coding with a friend on a project way over your head and actually making progress and learning shit. That feel when you run your script and it gives a DIFFERENT error? Or when it doesn't even crash at all?? Or when it ACTUALLY WORKS?!

Absolutely magic.

I just experienced the opposite of rant.

I spent 1 entire day ranting about a algorithm I couldn't write with no issues, it occupied all my mind and got me pissed of.

And today, I rewrote it entirely, and it works perfectly everywhere.

I was like : "No it can't work here. Oh ok", "And here's the bug ! No ? Nice.", "Don't tell me it'll work here. I'm a God".

That's why I love being a dev :D

1) I had a 'fight' with a guy I'm making a startup with. Had to explain some of the story of my life, just to clarify that I'm not evil or generally unwilling to understand - regarding me, having the need to keep using practices

2) I've found that a whole niche-community of people seems to ignore the rest of the community and won't tag along. Having spent several months to be able to help, and receiving shit or absolutely nothing, for finally trying

3) Was in a bad mood the moment I woke up, because I fought with my girlfriend last night because she fails to communicate simple things and won't realise it.

Sorry for the bad punctuation, I tried and smartphones aren't a nice way to edit such things.

So my rant is basically a thank you! Not a rant.. But still, I think you people are the best for being so relatable and making me laugh, and feel like there's more of 'my kind'.

I also just fixed a bug in my app by (finally!) asking the framework maintainer what's up, and got a response which made no sense in a logical manner.. That's a rant for another day, I'll aggregate all the 0 fucks given, when I'm finally able to leave this thing behind, and give you a proper curse-filled shit stack of the nonsense I'm experiencing!

You know, the whole AWS outage being caused by a typo while debugging got me thinking... whoever did that is most probably a developer who had a REALLY bad day. Could that person be on DevRant? Because the story of what the rest of that day and week was like for him or her has the chance to be the most epic rant on here ever. Poor guy/gal.

I was single the whole time while I'm at school. After graduated, I finally pick up the pace to date girls. So I signed up for a few online dating sites/apps. Every single time that I create a new profile for the app/site, I always get frustrated and confused about the language field. Especially when there's only selector or check box for languages selections.

Like, where's JavaScript, PHP, HTML5, Css3, Ruby, on the selector or check box. I think a suggestions to those dating site/app dev needs to rethink the options for language selections. At least try to let us developers have a better profile than normal people! :-/

"The Spigot Web Framework" - a Tool that should help Owners of Minecraftservers without dedicated Webserver and knowledge about developing a website.

In the Screenshot below I show you guys, how few lines of code can make a beautiful website.

The Modulemanager is fully done and people can build their own Modules, which can be live updated.

I am currently working on "cross communication" between the Client and the Modules.

I suddenly remembered that time when I was a junior, faced an issue in the code. I assign a parameter for a method for background-colour, where I have to declare a Colour value with the hexcode, then I got an error thrown at me. That's says Colour(); not found something something.

Took me one hour to realise most programming languages are American. Should be Color() not Colour()

Facepalm. That day I thought to me self, how stupid can I get in a day.

A few days ago I had an interview, they asked me if I knew Angular. I told them I never used it, and they told me to give it a go anyway. I made what they asked me to do in 8 hours and submitted it for review. Today they called and said they liked it, and asked me to go there tomorrow to talk terms.
Well, tomorrow could be my first day as an Angular developer!

Just asked something on stackoverflow.
Has been 15min already. And still no downvote and no comment saying “fuck off”

Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.

Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.

Hi all, first rant.

I work on an app on the Shopify platform, which requires me to look at the front end of people’s Shopify stores about half the day.

Can we PLEASE get the Shopify devs together and convince them to put a hard limit on the number of pop ups and slide ins and modal apps a single store can have running??? When a user (or app developer) can’t click on a product to buy it (or test installation) because ‘spin the wheel’ and ‘join the mailing list’ and ‘Karen in Ohio just bought a toaster’ won’t stop popping into the view, your UX is shit.

I realize people could still actually go in and build these things into their store code - but I’m willing to bet VERY few would.

So I was told why a bash with Git isn't allowed in my company.

The people that built the development kit (IDEs, tools, etc) estimated that Git wasn't necessary since integrated in Visual Studio.

They clearly never tried to do a pull request or a rebase then. Good to know.

Yesterday was the first day of my final exams. (They are scheduled this whole week) First exam was programming on paper and it went surprisingly good. I'm pretty sure i made one or two minor mistakes but overall it should work. (3 tasks: program a calculator; program a car-showcase program and explain quicksort) We had 3 hours to do this and even though i needed them i didn't feel any pressure. That was really nice. Thank you for calming me down the last days/weeks and ensuring me that i can do this.
I hope today's going as smooth. Exam of the day is networks. Wish me luck^^

So whole day I have been trying to pass a variable from laravel blade view to vue2 component file. All in seperate files. I know that I have successfully passed 1 or 0 in same flow before. So I was following the same steps to pass my string variable. It kept giving me undefined. No google helped and I had been doing all kinds of stupid useless trials. All failed.

Because it is supposed to fail. 😐
I only learned it at the end of the day.

What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.

This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.

Ok, this is my first post here...and I came here to rant - I had heard about this place, but I guess I just hadn't had a bad enough day...until today...the day I found my ec2 instance was playing hide and seek with me. I just found out that my aws billing dashboard is going to swoosh 2000rs (30$) out of my wallet. Imagine ranting about this to a layperson... ok anyway, I had taken a t2-medium (my first one ever) for a hackathon and I was just playing with the regions I guess and it somehow ended up in the ohio region. I had given IAM access to some of my teammates and they were using it. We were supposed to shutdown the instance after 1 day. The next day I check the dashboard (for N.Virginia - which is the default) and I see no running instances. I thought ok my teammates must've turned it off and I left it at that. A month after the hackathon, I login today and I have this jaw-dropping moment. I now have to pay 30$ for nothing!

As a web dev i really hate half assed solutions

Especially when I'm forced to spend time making them because some stupid sales person sold certain features that our current product doesn't support.

At the end of the day that sales guy gets a commission and I build something that will inevitably break somewhere in the future.

Got introduced to RLE on a rant the other day and holy shit doing more research into it and it's algorithms... How the fuck have I not known of this?!?!?!

After only one weekend I already see the value of it to me.

How many times would venting to other devs during a stressful day make your day better? A lot.

It seems like this place attracts a lot of different people from a lot of different experience levels, ages, geographic locations, backgrounds, maturity levels and more...

Like any other platform, these differences can make for some difficulties and miss understandings, but overall I have seen a positive and supportive community so far.

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.

So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?

Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):

-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)

I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).

I am a developer at a tech company. The tester in my team refuse to test my work because he feel I don't respect him. He is a fucking idiot, so obviously I don't respect him. I can still do my job just like always, so I told the cretin it doesn't matter if I respect him or not and he doesn't need my respect to do his job.

Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.

I got really awesome wireless headphones as a prize at a hackathon.
Was actually feeling down today, then this arrived and made my day!
It made my day and inspired me to do something today(started a personal project!)

So they give us a stress ball if a rant gets that many "upvotes". I find that really stressful, waiting and waiting.. And never get there. In the end of the day we are stressed af and with no stress ball 😂.
But hey, who da hell get stressed for this little? We devs are already stress free...

My employer forced me to do video courses and pass quizzes/tests. Questions were vague, not directly related to the video and it took me over a week to get past them.

I think i should mention, there was a month for this, but I missed the email and learned about this courses by being warned that deadline is near.

On the second day I made a userscript that stores given answers and mark the correct ones in the next attempts, so that brute-forcing would require less copy/paste.

Topics covered by the courses are a nice subject for another rant.

A few suggestions:

1. Being able to move between day, month etc. by swiping left or right

2. A web interface (to rant from a laptop/desktop)

3. Link "framing" (a-la WhatsApp, messenger, where links get a frame with a picture and description)

4. basic markdown (bold, quotes, etc. a-la Reddit. this might exist but I haven't run into it, and if it does maybe a preview window for the result would be helpful)

Does anyone know what the **day-to-day** differences are between working in IT (banks, hedge funds) vs tech (Google, Facebook, Netflix).

In my mind, I see Hell and Heaven. And there's a giant wall in between called "technical interviews + algorithms and data structures".

Well after a few really downer and shitty weeks, I think I just struck gold...

First I had trouble getting a new job but was contacted personally for a full time position as a printer and copier serviceman which entrails me getting my own company car, new phone and maybe new laptop and the same day I got a call about my phone that was getting repaired, I was expecting to pay around $400+ for the repair,. nope, the repairer paid for a new phone and gave me a brand new one back, even got the latest model revision too!

Shit turned around quick for me! :-D

The useless, recently hired nightmare of an ops manager has been fired! Huzzah!

Does anyone else derive great pleasure from creating quality of life/small utility programs?

So I'm learning python in between projects at work (plan on slowly moving new projects to it) and damn, my coding buddy and I have found a package/import for almost anything we can imagine. Heck, we canned ourselves laughing when we started googling random things and still found python packages that do it. I plan to use the language to automate a ton of things when I get a new PC.

Aside from that, I recently in 2 days (1 day building, 1 day bug fixing) made a tiny utility that shaves a good 5 minutes off a certain task for my colleagues at work, and in bulk use will save even more time. It's a textbox and a button only but it felt so nice to make something useful like that so quickly.

I was getting headaches from looking at the comp screen all day, but what can you do when it's your job? A friend told me about these glasses you can buy specifically for people at a comp 8+ hrs a day. I gave in and bought a pair, and now, no more headaches! Thank you Gunnar glasses! 👓 😃

Sde2 with MS from Australia, 12 years of 'experience' generates an 'algo'. 70% Test case FAILED.

I write a bin packing algo with 100% test case pass, raises pull request to MASTER in < 1 day. Same sde2 does not approve, blocking same day release.

For the past year I was more or less solely responsible for a project. With the beginning of the year 2020 that project is paused. I had vacation starting the 23.12.2019 so the project ended there for me. Since the 25. the project is alerting like 30 crashes a day. I didn't change a thing but the external consultant did. Now I sit here at home and drink relaxing tea while reading a book. It's nice to say that it is not my problem anymore :-)

Honestly now that I have a job and I work with good people, being on devrant anymore just ruins my day. I love it when people rant about their jobs and code, and I love it when people share cool stuff on here. But the childish and toxic behavior leaves such a sour taste in my mouth. Just went an entire day at work without a computer.

I know we usually rant about meaningless meetings and waste of time conversations but they are great for avoiding work while seeming very busy and productive.

First rant here..

So earlier this week, on a php Laravel project, I created a set of nice new features.

The code is tested, locally all fine, I push to Github, circleCi kicks in and double checks myself, still everything green. (Just for a not, its a private project so only I work on it.)

I go ahead and merge, deploy to staging and continue on my next ticket, which is a very small one.

I call it the day, next day I pick back up where I left, test locally, all green, push... then circleCi says no.

I spend 2 days debugging, trying to figure out what is wrong without advance. I just push develop branch again, guess what also failing.

I leave it for the day as I already spend enough time on it.

This morning, I simply do a composer update, push and everything miraculously starts working.. even if there were no changes in the working branches.

Im so mad right now, and this is going in my "try this before you debug a ci" book..

Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.

So on the last day before launch our latest feature I'm informed that a requirement was missed and it had to be implemented before go live otherwise the business didn't want the feature. The feature in question was pretty drastic and basically required a scheme rewrite, new tables, etc. So I spent the entire day making the change.

Thankfully I pushed the whole project for good code coverage. Therefore, all I had to do when I was done was run all of our tests and make sure they passed. *warm fuzzy feelings*

Rant at myself for being a moron.

Manually tried moving some InnoDB stuff around on a local server and corrupted a load of databases, with no backups since June 28th. Spent all day yesterday trying to recover with no luck 😑

Lesson learned: need to backup databases more regularly. Any good tools?

I’m really loving being a contractor and working for myself.

Currently waiting for the client to order the next lot of work, so that means today I got to go out, go swimming, walk down the seafront and just generally have a nice day out in the sun with friends and family.

Why the hell is the gaming community so volatile when it comes to discussing someone personal gaming platform whether it be a gaming PC, Xbox, play station or switch, I myself own a gaming pc yet I will choose to play a game on my xbox one any day of the week, I use my pc for mainly media consumption when programming and just generally for internet use.

Just curious if there are any developers on here who share my view that a platform is just a platform?

I always think of great game song melodies, and every single day, when i just hum aloud, there is definitely 1 good one. Many times i have a recorder or my phone, but sometimes, i dont which makes me hum all the way to my cell phoneand when it try to record it, i forget the melody making me so frustrated....

I finally found something to rant about! So what happened is that I am participating in the Digital Ocean competition (I need to do 5PR's). So I find a report with a lot of scripts. I decide to contribute and write a discord webhook API (send messages through a webhook). The next day, the guy goes "No thanks :)" and closes the PR. Words cannot express how triggered I am. I ask him if I can make anything else out of exasperation (I did not intend to do anything for him anymore, I can't explain why I did that), he tells me no...

It feels weird now. I don't really have much to rant about. That's partially cause I haven't been doing much dev work lately (but the bit I have done, everything's been fine). My personal life is going fucking great for once, so nothing to worry about there (the girl I'm talking to is so fucking sweet, and just amazing overall)
