Application has had a suspected memory leak for years. Tech team got developers THE EXACT CODE that caused it. Few months of testing go by, telling us they're resolving their memory leak problem (finally).
Today: yeah, we still need restarts because we don't know if this new deployment will fix our memory leak, we don't know what the problem is.

Apparently, part of being a software engineer means knowing how to read minds and do other people's jobs.
While implementing a user story for marketing, we found some associated features that, according to the database, have not been used for years. We tell them this. We do the courtesy of asking, "Hey, is there anything on the site that is utilizing these features? We'd like to clean up the DB."
"We don't know."
Engineering suggests, "Ok, lets turn the feature off, then, and see if anyone complains. It's been years according to the DB."
Marketing gets angry and hostile and says, "That's not the way to do things!"
I don't vocalize, "Well, not knowing how to do your own damned job is not the way to do things."

"I don't know. You're engineering. You tell us."
We implement it as best we can.
Marketing says, "HEY! This isn't done right! It's missing this and this and this!"
"Did you ask us to implement that? According to the user story, it passes acceptance criteria."
Marketing says, "I thought you would just know that! I didn't know it was a separate thing. Just put it on all the pages, then. You guys really should know the site better."
Engineering gets angry and hostile

(R)ecruiter : So except for the development things, we are looking for someone who has experience configuration linux. Do you have any experience with that?
(M)e : Sure, I use Linux all the time. What do you mean.
R : Well, Just using Linux isn't enough for this position, you need to have experience in configuration Linux.
M : Well. I can't answer your question if you don't specify what you mean. Do you mean that I need to be able to install my own packages? Set up my dev environment? Bash scripting? Being able to configure my bash profile to have good aliases? Use Linux to develop software? Because I can do all of these.
M : Or do you need someone who can write Kernel modules for the OS, because I don't have any experience in that but would like to learn.
R : Oh, I don't really know what it means. But the paper says that you need to have experience configuration Linux. So what would you say your experience with that is?

Basically every question was like this with the recruiter. I got further in the process but quit because the workplace looked like it would drain my soul when I got interviewed by the employees of the company.

They teach some basic HTML and CSS like <table> and <marquee> and stuff. They also teach C++ and Tally ERP.
Also, he and some other person made their small intuitions' website but they don't know how to put it online. They made it in, as far as I understand, simple HTML and CSS USING NOTEPAD (Don't know if they used JS or something else). That's.. really courageous or something... ? I don't know, I couldn't have a look at it because they have it on their local computer and don't know what Git is.
I showed him some better alternatives and ways that they could use (editors, version control, db, etc.) to improve their curriculum and answered his questions, and I told him that I'll try to help in any way I can if they ever need me.
This also made me realize how much I've learned and grown since I first started learning C in school. Still, I've got so much more that I need and want to learn.

As I responded, he asked me another question; "but how do you know wuat to type".
I use to have those same thoughts years ago.
It occurred to me that through constant bugs, errors, bad (team) projects and failures that its become second nature, like breathing.
So, as an experienced developer to people just learning the craft and juniors. Don't give up on your collabs, don't be disheartened by group projects, don't be discouraged by your peers who seemingly try to make your life harder.
Take it as an experience to better yourself and teach them something.
These are the experiences that will make you a better developer.1 -
I've been teaching my brother basic front-end development stuff. He's good. Seeing this, I decided to put him into a real project. So I got one, a simple front-end project. But the project managers are assholes and requesting stupid things. Thus, my brother didn't complete it before deadline. I don't know what to do now. i kinda feel embarrassed all the time. i feel like it's never enough, i don't know enough, there's so much i don't know. i do enjoy my work and sometimes there are moments where i'm proud of what i've done, or these "i'm a fucking genious" moments when i solve a bug or a certain problem or when something finally works. but if i have to do something new, i tend to panic a bit, as long as i do not yet have a concrete solution in mind.
my perception contrasts with the feedback people give me, but even when i'm happy about the positive feedback, i tend to think to myself, "they're wrong, it's not that great"..4 -
The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -

This so called full-stack developer doesn't know how to use mysql from command line. The only way he can do anything in the database is using phpMyAdmin or MySQL gui.
What? How do you even call yourself a developer when you don't know how to use basic command line tools?

Recently in a project of mine people started to raise tons of issues and suggesting fixes "just slap this module on it", "just do this", "just do that". And no respect for the project whatsoever. Code contributions? Don't even think about it.
The users raising these do not know what language the project is written in, they do not know whether it supports modules at all (let alone that particular one), and they have no idea whatsoever what the code is like, or how this suggestion 99% of the time would not at all integrate with the overall structure of the project. And aside from all that, don't fucking tell me what to do with my project!
My question is, how do you deal with these people? All I can think of is "wontfix™️" or even "cantfix™️" in some cases. Given that this is an endless slew of users, anything long-term?1 -
At the end of each day, work out exactly what you need to do next, and then...
...don't do it. Seriously. Make a note of it, save it, then walk away. Then you know *exactly* what you're getting started with the next day, and by the time you've done that you're in the swing of things. (Especially helpful if you're not a morning person like me. Much, much easier to get started if you know exactly what you're doing.) -
Fucking hate when business people says this to me:
- You have no time to do this, we will find somebody else to do it. (EXCUSE ME? how do you know I have no time? If have no time I WILL TELL YOU)
- Your team is too busy, we will outsource that (IF THAT it's a priority, we WILL DO THAT, fuck you, I'll tell you if we need to outsource or not)
- Requirements are too complex to do now. We will think about it and we will tell you, maybe it's just enough to add a column to db (WHAT? WHAT THE FUCK IS too complex? I didn't even see anything we can call requirement, nor speak with relevant people, so how do you fucking know they are complex if you don't know shit about dev and our platform)

though I'm normally just a lurker, I want to take some time to make some new years resolutions I probably won't follow after a few days, but I do have some small goals I hopefully can achieve.
1. Hopefully not regretting to post this. I get kind of anxious when I think about someone I know could see this. I'm fairly new to this site, so I really don't know what's going to face me.
2. Getting my mental health on the right track.

Long time no rant from me. Sorry guys, has been a tough time for me.
Little background: I'm an apprentice and as such definitely not a fully trained professional. I'm working in a big company with people who have very let's say interesting ideas what I should be able to do.
This whole disaster begins shortly after I started my apprenticeship. I was offered to choose my first little project. "Something from the backlog, not very challenging and a nice beginner one. It's just about a PoC" ok, le me thinks. I choose to make a weather display.
Basic functionality was provided within the next 3 weeks. My direct boss (let's call him Jo) liked it and talked to his boss (Hugo) about it. Hugo was so excited he called our product manager to get my plugin into our software asap and began to think about where else we could use this.
This is where shit went downhill. Hugo told me it was my task to implement it on a totally different platform and to "host it in azure". I don't know much about azure and I never used it. I told him that I'd need time and some kind of sandbox to try and learn how things work. He promised but nothing ever came through. Not even Jo could do something about this.
They told me I should write this asap because "every customer would LOOOOVE this" and I honestly can't think of a way to meet all their requirements without access to our azure system/ sandbox. (There are a lot of requirements)
Am I wrong? Should I be able to do this? I'm a fucking trainee. I don't know everything.7 -

I have ADHD. If you don't know what that means, for me it makes me a better software engineer. I can't do repetitive, so my code is by definition DRY. If someone needs help, I'll notice and help because my brain can't filter out the emotion of someone struggling. I fixate on problems I don't know how to solve, I literally struggle to stop myself. As a rookie programming, I wrote really bad code and didn't understand why. Now, I've improved to where I know bad code, but I continue writing studios horrible solutions. I only finished my CS degree last year but while I was a student and after I got my degree I went for a few interviews and none of the companies really asked me what degree I have or didn't ask at all, some just asked what I was studying. All of the companies asked what I can do and what my skills are. If I can do it, they were happy to hire me even if I didn't have a degree.
So to answer the question, a degree is not useful if you still don't know how to program (for example) or if you don't know your field well. If you are good at what you do, you will earn crazy money with or without a degree.
I know a few people that don't have a CS degree but their programming skills are crazy good...probably much better than a uni graduate with a CS degree.3 -
Some people just don't get it. When you meet friends who are either non technical or very new to programming, all they ask you is what language do you use.
The language is important but not everything. It's what you do with it that matters. Just because you know python, doesn't mean that you can do machine learning. Even simply asking what do I do is better than that!
The language is just a tool! Learn to be language agnostic please. Be a programmer, not a code monkey2 -

follow up rant on my apprenticeship situation. I talked to Jo (my trainer). I told him I need more supervision and either someone who teaches me the stuff I need to know to meet the requirements from Hugo (my department mananger) or some further education. Because otherwise I'm not able to write producion ready code. (Keep in mind: I'm a fucking trainee who started their apprenticeship 6 months ago!)
Jo is more than happy to help me and make sure I'll get everything i need. Sadly he has to speak with Hugo and get his ok.
Hugo thinks 2 das of school/week is enough training. (Regardless of the fact that we don't even learn the same languages there we use in our projects.) I told him that way I won't be able to finish my projects.
I hope he reconsiders. How should I learn if nobody's there to teach me? (My collegues are to occupied fixing bugs and implementing new features/ don't know the languages either.)
If Hugo keeps this mindset I have to contact the IHK (a german institution which keeps an eye on apprenticeships).5 -

So this group of students (mostly girls) from university approached us to make them a prototype app for their semester's project, we had a first reunion to know about the idea and what they wanted us to do.
All they talked about was the color and some minor design stuff, we still don't exactly know what we're doing since it was difficult for us to get them to actually define the requirements and what the app should do.
We were supposed to have a second reunion for us to show them some ideas but the day of the meeting they didn't reply any of our messages.

So I am doing some learning of C#. I wrote an https server in Python for a specific task. Now I want to convert it to C#. However, I do want it run as a server, but want some limited controls on it as a window. So I am looking at C# solutions for desktop applications. It seems to be a cluster of unsupported and bug ridden. I don't know if I should do: WinForms, WPA, or Maui.
I don't want to spend a lot of time learning a new gui system. I want stupid easy shit controls. I don't want to html anything.
So I guess I want something for C# that is stupid easy gui builder that barely runs. After reading reviews I just don't know what fits this bill yet.

Trying to use authenticate a JWT token from an Azure service, which apparently needs to use Azure AD Identity services (Microsoft Entra ID, Azure AD B2C, pick your poison). I sent a request to our Azure admin. Two days later, I follow up, "Sorry, I forgot...here you go..."
Sends me a (small) screenshot of the some of the properties+GUIDs I need, hoping I don't mess up, still missing a few values.
Me: "I need the instance url, domain, and client secret."
<hour later>
T: "Sorry, I don't understand what those are."
Me: "The login URL. I assume it's the default, but I can't see what you see. Any shot you can give me at least read permissions so I can see the various properties without having to bother you?"
T: "I don't see any URLs, I'll send you the config json, the values you need should be in there."
<10 minutes later, I get a json file, nothing I needed>

I have database (in both SQLite form and JSON form). I'd like to read from it, parse it and run various displays in a shared hosting environment (that doesn't have node). So webpack. And either an API to get the data or a React compatible SQL component.
But dagnamit, I cannot find a tutorial or example with this kind of set up and I can't figure it out. What packages do I need and what kind of config?
I genuinely thought this would be a traditional and simple architecture but I'm obviously mistaken. And I'm about to turn in my developer card because I'm clearly a stupid twonk.
Has anyone done this? Do you know of any tutorials or examples of this kind of thing? Is there somewhere else I should ask this question? Thanks anyway...5 -

This morning at 5:30 AM I was awoken to 20 text alerts for services being down.
Seems they had been down since 2 AM but the previous shift didn't take action.
Long story short:
An outsourced common component is unavailable, and the team responsible doesn't know how to troubleshoot.
I pointed them to the exact issue.
We are now 10 hours into the outage and they still don't know what to do. -

I'm helping my teammates with the problems that they face in debugging an issue or fixing a Dev environment.
Sometimes ppl go too flexible and ask for my Dev VM. The help I have to offer is tell them cause of an issue and tell them the fix that they have to give. What the fu*k they do? What did they gain as experience all these years.
Ppl don't know how to make draft commits. They can't fix but failures. They don't know anything.
They just sit at office and age as it is their only job.

Even after 3 years they didn't able come up with seemless infrastrure. The code is getting ugly day by day. No review happens. Is that normal? I don't know about you, but I keep trying to push myself into learning new stuff and studying the hardest jobs to do in IT, but I currently work as web developer and find myself loving what I do...
So I was thinking for a moment: why keep trying to have a great carrier and earning lots of money, having a nice car and a hot tub? Why not just working in a small company or as a freelance and do what I really enjoy without the headache?
But then I fear that I would depress because I would never know my limits, what I could do with my life... I fear that I would regret not having reached the top. Not the top of the world, but the top of myself.... Because if you know what you CAN'T do, then you can rest with a smile on your face.

To start of I'm a student in the Netherlands, I have just finished finished a support management study and I'm currently starting with a IT Management study on MBO 4 lvl.
At the moment I'm in conflict scout doing the IT Management study or doing a application development study as I just don't know what to do. I kind of want do development as I do it in my free time and I like it but I also want to do data center engineering as I also like to work with the hardware.
Should I take a month break of my study and try to get in contact with company's to work there to finalize my decision or should I just drop in the towel and do this study without knowing if I'm going to like it in the end.

Struggling to write my Engineering Thesis code. Not because I'm afraid of tech, but because I have no idea what it should do.
I'm testing mobile apps performance, but getting the right idea is pain in the ass. :(
Never been too creative, but always have been over ambitious and lazy.
So the deadline is coming slowly, I have specified my 'tests' (authorization, API connection, heavy calculations, graphics, database handling) and still don't know what my app should do.
And ideas or suggestions what else is to test? -
I have been having one of those days, well weeks where new concepts that would have otherwise taken a few hours, to learn and implement are taking days !! I don't know how y'all consistently learn new things and implement them, while still meeting deadlines.
My team usually holds weekly progress meetings where we discuss completed tasks and the following week's tasks. During the last meeting, I hadn't completed anything worth noting and I had no major reason other than, not having fully understood the concept.
Which is embarrassing because everyone else had done something.
I know, I know, I shouldn't compare myself to others but we all know my boss does. I don't blame him though, I mean I always pick the cake with more icing, and that's just food!
I don't even know what to do about it anymore!!! Is this a phase? Is it normal? What do people do about it? wait it out?3 -
Maybe I'm a complete beginner and don't know what I don't know, but having seen Terraform, I recognize immediately the value of simplifying deployment through configuration or 'infrastructure as code'.
I don't know a fucking thing about it, or how to actually do it, and don't even have a need for it because I don't program at that scale, but it looks really fun to work with.5 -
Why is searching for what certain DLLs do literally impossible? I don't fucking care that "downloading dlls is a bad idea" and that I should "check the recycle bin to restore it" - I just want to fucking know why my program won't run!

Why do people try to answer questions they don't even know what mean...
I want to use a package that's made for nodejs and it's using one of the core module of nodejs (http), so that's a problem because react-native doesn't have that module and I can't just simply install it (it won't work), so I search the web in the quest for a solution maybe a drop-in replacement or a polifill or something, I got to this question that's exactly what I would ask if I were to do the question myself https://stackoverflow.com/questions... asking for a polyfill to use http module in react-native, and the only answer is from a guy that I don't think he even knows what he is talking about, his answer don't make any sense with relation to the question and doesn't even address package http nor polyfill so obviously he didn't even know what the title of the question means...
If you don't fucking know something, just stay fucking silent don't reply with giberish stuff that don't have nothing to do with what people are asking. You don't have know it all, don't feel you have to... and don't try to answer stuff you don't even know.

I know a lot of people know about this already, but I'll put it here anyways. So, I've know for a long time that I don't need to know more about a language, I just need experience (As a learning dev). So, I was just being an idiot looking for projects to make. Then, I found codewars and I am hooked. Can't wait to see what I can eventually do with it.1

I really don't know what to do when I can't get the help that we need.
We use the initial version of Jasmine for unit testing and AngularJS (not 2, 3, 4+, but 1), so it's hard to find any good examples online to create my tests. My coworkers help, but since testing isn't something we do at all (or at least very often), they are unsure on how to help me.
I don't know what to do. I feel very unproductive and not valuable to the company at this time.2 -
Fuck domain re-sellers who don't know what they're doing, you fucking moron you do not need DNS if the Service provider is same as domain and hosting, all you had to do was to change A record with @/${Insert IP Address here} values, it's taking you ages to do that, fucking idiots.

Its kinda true. Also this is a rant about "my girl": She had a boyfriend till the first october and we met some while before it. We had sex, she dropped her boyfriend and said "i hope you mean this between us serious". I mean it serious, but she is like "i don't know if we should be together". Now i followed this path and got rid of an other girl because of her (if|else) and she doesn't know if she wants to be together with me. Wtf girl. Also she types "yas" instead of "yes". I don't know what to do.

I get a paper and a pen and write down what I know I have to do, what I don't know how to do it and I suspect I don't know yet what I'll have to do.
For the parts I know I'll have to work using a new framework or new tools I try to create a proof of concept project I can reuse later.
I tend to write a bit in paper before coding just to wrap up my head on what I'll have to do. -
I want to start contributing to open source softwares, but I don't know whom to approach or what is the criteria if there is some for getting selected in open source softwares.
I read many articles on the internet, all of them mentioned what activities one can do in an OSS, but neither mentioned of how to approach them.

I have a class on my college on which we can choose what to do as a final project the only requisite being that we need to do something we haven't covered in any class at the degree.
I want to be a Gameplay programmer and saw that many offers ask for Lua, then I think this is an opportunity to do something in Lua and learn the basics but I don't know what to do, any ideas of a simple project I can do in Lua or a framework that uses Lua that can teach me the basics of it?

I was using signal Android app for a while. But few months ago, when I reinstalled the app and was trying to backup. It said, "Backup files are malfunction." I don't know what does that mean actually. So I installed few GitHub repo into my computer and after spending an hour I finally found one repo which actually worked. I got my backup as HTML files and media as .backup files. But I still cannot install the app on my android phone. I don't know what to do to fix that. HELP

I've been experimenting with all kinds of development. Web, mobile, system, desktop apps and softwares. I don't know which one i should choose as a career. I like doing everything and will code till the end of time. But, Frontend stuff, UI/UX doesn't interest me. I love writing softwares that makes things easier. Like Rails made web development easier and fun. I have been following Redox OS which is built using Rust and my interest in OS has been propelled. I have interest in cloud development too. I don't know which i should choose for my profession. I am currently a student so i have a lot of time to try everything but i don't know what i should do professionally. Any suggestions guys?4 -

But I gave myself a competition to earn that gold 🏅 medal half way through my cs course, and now I've come to know that I've miserably failed,

Not a dev yet (pretty fucking far from it actually) but I really enjoy coding and learning but I feel like I chose the wrong motive
I started leaning Java because it was easy to find a job since it's very popular and I got the basics pretty well integrated but I feel like I can't really do anything I wanted to do with it, I wanted to build small pieces of software that would run on windows and Linux but the fact that Java needs the jvm to work on a system makes me feel uncomfortable, I don't know why, and that makes me wanna switch to c++ even tho i think it's harder to learn.
I know it's bad practice not sticking to what I learn and pursue it but I don't know what to do with Java...
Any advice?
