I've been doing programming as a hobby since I was 10 years old, I've always found my teachers are good at IT but not that good in Computer Science and programming, this year a new teacher joined the IT department who has actual experience in programming etc.
Our school uses two services, a rewards system which for some reason can also show our timetable, and another service for displaying our homework. In my spare time I made a project which combined these two services and showed it to him. As the first teacher with actual programming experience he was impressed and now I get to 'pitch' my project to the teachers higher up.

TLDR; It's good to have a good teacher

How to become cool in a developer community:
- try javascript for the first time

After working as a developer for 4-5 years I finally took up school again.

The teacher at our first programming course insisted that we named all our variables in our locale language (swedish) and always started arrays at index 1.

This was my first real programming bible. I remember reading it chapter after chapter in the car on long car trips as a youngster and being so excited about the stuff I was learning I would explain it to my mom in the front seat as I was learning it. I'm sure she didn't understand a word of it.

Funny thing is I still do that today, 25 years later. And I'm sure she still understands not a word!

The first time I got in touch with programming was when I was about 14 years old. I started a private server for a game called Maplestory (yeah you know it, I know you do) and had one of the most popular servers.
Topping all the rankings of best servers, getting lots and lots of traffic...
Anyway, I started modding the game and implement new features and quests. Right until my father saw our bandwidth. Because the server was running on my computer in my own bedroom 24/7 and blowing nice hot air in my room.
Our bandwidth limit was reached in just a couple days in to the next billing cycle and had to shut everything down from that point. And this happened a few times.
I was devastated shutting it down but learned so much from it. And it introduced me to programming.

Up till now, I'm almost graduating in computer science, already have 2 companies that are willing to hire me, and probably even going to work with my dad on a huge app soon

I just got offered my first position for a Junior developer gig. they are offering me more money than I expected and otherwise I'm super amped to take it.

what makes me nervous is its my first programming position. I have an IT/Programming bachelor's but not a pure Computer Science degree.

I was asked no technical questions and I don't know if it was clear that I'm very much looking for entry-level work. I guess the fear of failure is creeping up on me.

In every programming language, your first goal usually is to write "Hello World".

Except for php. There "phpinfo();" is the equivalent of that.

At many places, first programming course is Python or JavaScript. Our university first teaches C. I feel its a great language to build up programming skills. Tough then formers and that's what makes it more beneficial.

Crushed my first week at the new job. I'm not a software engineer yet, but it's a QA job with a fair amount of test automation, so lots of programming and another step toward my goal.

When, where and how was your very first interaction with programming.

One day i type hello world program.
And i was amazed that for the first time someone (something) is doing what i tell it to do.
And that's how i got interest in programming.

First year: intro to programming, basic data structures and algos, parallel programming, databases and a project to finish it. Homework should be kept track of via some version control. Should also be some calculus and linear algebra.

Second year:
Introduce more complex subjects such as programming paradigms, compilers and language theory, low level programming + logic design + basic processor design, logic for system verification, statistics and graph theory. Should also be a project with a company.

Year three:
Advanced algos, datastructures and algorithm analysis. Intro to Computer and data security. Optional courses in graphics programming, machine learning, compilers and automata, embedded systems etc. ends with a big project that goes in depth into a CS subject, not a regular software project in java basically.

Just finished my first programming project and I couldn't be more excited for what's to come in the future 😄 also it's 3:30 and I've got class at 8:35...

My introduction to programming and computers is quite different than most as in I didn't start programming first, I started by taking electronic parts from my toys and repurposing them or using them in different things, we had a computer I used to play games with but at age 7 my father died and my mother needed money so she sold it, the next laptop I got was at age 11 and then I started coding.

First I helped her with coding the Newton-Raphson method in Python (she has background in Mechanical Engineering).

Participated in competitive programming for the first time. It was kinda fun I guess...
Nope I still hate competitive programming. I like being a laid back programmer who develops in his own pace.
I know it's not what industry wants but I can't jst go for competitive programming.

On the positive note, I started using goto in C++ because of it and created a better Graph library than I had before 🤗🤗

When I was in my first year in university, at the Introduction to Programming class, we had to do a Java project and my partner was someone who was always bragging about how much he knew about programming. Me being someone who was learning programming by the moment I started the course I thought he was going to help and teach me cool stuff.

The first phase was due to deliver in one week and literally my code was all original and my partners code was all copies of others work. Out project could'vw been graded 0 because of his code (because they used a programm that compared variables of each project to see if.they fins copies). He practically didn't gave the effort to try to code, just copies. I spent the whole week correcting his work so that I wasnt penalized in the end...

My parents have a very good grasp of what I do.

The first computer I got to try was one of the educational computers used for courses arranged by the company my mother worked for and my father studied programming before me ;)

1) Let me work with devs without me having to explain fundamentals of programming

2) Stop devs from copy pasting code from StackOverflow or any other project without actually understanding what it does

3) Get devs to actually read and understand project documentation FIRST before jumping into any programming work

This was when I was just starting out with programming. I had chosen C++ as my first programming language.

A friend and I'd written a simple application to fetch XML data from a sports data server, parse it and display our favourite football (soccer, for Americans) team's fixtures and results on a GUI.

Now finished Uni having studied AI and Robotics and in my first job! I call myself a developer but I know there is still so much to learn in our ever changing industry!

I just finished ny first feature at my first dev job - a gallery page connected to an api.

It took 2 weeks. About 2 days of programming, but 12 days of fucking css.

Why is css so bloody hard?

I was just in the attic to look for some old school stuff for my sister. But then I found an old carton with old stuff from me. In there I found my very first programming book. "AntMe!" to learn Visual Basic with ants 😄

I still work there and I love it. I learned a lot in these years...

Me(the first day fo spring semester): Data Structures and Algorithms shouldn't be too hard of a class! This will be interesting!

Me(a couple days into class): I don't understand anything she's saying and the programming problems are in some pretty rough English...why me?!?

When you started your first programming job was it easier or harder than you pictured because I feel like I'm no where near ready (although I'm not out of high school just yet so I have time to prepare but still)

What are people's worst experiences applying for programming jobs?

As I'm still a student I only really have one but here it is:

I applied to a company for a uni placement role working on the Game that first got me interested in Games Programming, they said I'd get a response in about a week, just over a month later on my birthday of all days I got an email to say my application was in fact unsuccessful.

First day in introduction to programming. We were the first course to learn Python instead of Java. The whole lecture consisted only of what Python is good for and how powerful it is.
He finished with the statement: “... and in the real life, no one writes applications in Python.“

I got my first client! I am programming an autohotkeys program for my job to make inputting on their site way easier. It was mostly my idea but, they were onboard!

Well... I was in a room, my computer was in a room. I was bored, so I just browsed around wikipedia. Then, baaam, suddenly i was at the page for programming. I read about and i was in love. It was love at first sight.

When I first started getting interest in server side programming, I remember I felt like god with all those possibilities!

My first programming job was because of someone I knew in college worked there. Strangely he also got me my fourth programming job.

My fifth job was a recruiter. First time that ever worked. But it does work.

The biggest thing to remember that in an interview you are selling yourself. So you need to understand a little of sales and marketing.

For first time in my life, I finished a programming book. It was YDKJS: up and going.

I'm currently a student in college. First semester of first year for the first 'real' programming course the school has offered, and we realized that they have told everyone to store their server login info in a connectvars.php file. 45 minutes and three tests later we had a script that was capable of outputting the username / password combo for any account on the schools server who had taken that course, ever.

Pursuing knowledge in python, as my first "real" programming language (does bash count? 😂) - wish me luck guys!

Decided to enter a programming context. Couldn't read the input for the first problem. Tried different language and reading the input looked even harder. Decided to go to sleep.

Yes ! @Julien00859, first time we met we talked about the fact I should start programming in Python.

Work hard. Seriously. If its your first job, prepare yourself for 1 year in front. Learn programming, repeat, repeat more, fail, gain expertise. Surprise them with everything you do, blow the others out of the water with your knowledge.

a few years back in uni, programming my first game in Unity. I spend days and nights on it, for both playing and programming it.

My first computer experience was when I was like 4 or 5 I didn't really understand it yet. My first programming experience was when I was 8. I really wanted to make my own website login system so I copied some PHP code and tried to open it😂. Ofcourse it didn't work.

What was your first big project after learning a programming/markup language?

Hmm... My first experience with computers was in 1991 or so, when my then best friend had C64. And I was 7. My first PC arrived in 1993. Prince of Persia is the first game I remember from that time. I started programming in 1995 or '96, writing useless things in Pascal. Using PHP since 2000. Still that’s my main programming language. And sadly, my kids have different hobbies than me, so they aren’t even trying to program.

I remember the sound of modem connecting thru phone line to some BBS systems and later to the first public and free internet service in Poland. I remember simple, really „computer-like” voice of my dad’s speech synthesizer (he’s blind person). I remember, when our time to „play on PC” was limited to max 1hr a day... What will our kids remember?

What's the most number of lines you have written for a project without testing and then had it run the first time? Also for context, what language did you use?

Feeling pretty good with my 200+ in C#.

Started learning C programming through CS50 course.
Hello world?nope.too scared to write the program because everytime I write it, something or the other happens and I stop learning C

When you first start programming:
"I know how all of these functions work, now what can I actually use that for?.."

How much time has passed since the first you started programming to the first time your earned money?

Well, I gotta give it to the following:

Gaming-
It was the thing that made me curious about programming and actually brought me into programming in the first place.
Makes my mind fresh and ready to code as well ☺️

Curiosity-
I always had curiosity and that helps me learn all I know. It helped especially in programming since it’s much easier ( imo ) to code if u dive deep in the intricacies of the system.

Support from parents-
I got a lot of support from my parents. Especially my mom who always listened to me babbling of programming and showing interest, and motivating me to continue it 🤗🤗

i am so excited about my first collaboration in 12 years! finally someone considers my capabilities as useful. now i just hope to not mess up the repo.

Hey, I just finished my first year of CS (been programming since before then). I want to start building actual projects (I have an idea for a Spotify voting thingy), but I'm struggling to actually begin without following a tutorial. Any suggestions?

It has been 2 years ( counting this ) since our programming teacher reads a PDF and thinks we just understands what he want to say.

Not training properly in the first 7 years of my programming career, which is theselast 7 years 😓

As a result, I have to re-do a big part of my work because I don't trust my older self around computers.
