My employer has this really cool thing. Where if I do my job very well, I get to do other peoples jobs too!13
-
When you look back on your github activity and just think "Wow, we have really created something special. This is really going to help the world." It just... It gets me. That's why I do this day in and day out.14
-
I actually just wanted to say - what a great time it is to be a developer.
C# has stolen so many good features now that it's pretty awesome.
JavaScript and typescript are really fun to work with.
I really love angular.
Docker is great!
I can setup pipelines and deploy an angular app for free and really easily with github-pages.
I can use linux inside windows.
I can use cloud providers to do all sorts for really cheap.
I can plug my cable-free oculus quest VR headset into my laptop and build a game pretty easily with unity (thanks to all the great oculus helper prefabs).
I can use tesseract and data science technology inside my browser!!
And I can go to medium and udemy and learn all sorts of things.
Honestly...
Just saying.
I'm actually really loving being a developer right now.
And if I do have off day, I can rant on here!24 -
"and what do you do for a living?"
"I study software engineering and work as a software engineer part time"
"Really? You don't look like it!"
"Excuse me? What do I have to look like?"
The stereotypes are strong in development...4 -
Just reduced 900 lines of horrible code into 106 lines of less horrible code..
QA: do those 106loc really do what the 900loc did ?
Me: yes
QA: really?
Me: yes
QA: are you sure?
Me: NO. I was lying. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe you should run it and find out.
QA: *immediately releases for prod*3 -
Do we really hate management this much?
(I'm controlling myself... just caught up with a month of Dilbert.... wish I could post more but that would be spammy...)1 -
What's the point of these stupid questions? Do I really have to kiss some ass even before being hired?12
-
They: What do you do for a living?
Me: DevOps, FreeBSD Administration, Ruby, ...
They: hmm?
Me: administrator for UNIX systems
They: whut?
Me: I do stuff with computers
They: I really like Apple
Me: *sigh*
.... and every time, too...10 -
Oops, i bought a new one - I dont really know what i wanna do with it - but it was on sale so 😅
#4GB-RAM15 -
I really, really hate it when someone has a problem/question, and I really dedicate my heart and soul to write a really good answer that even a stupid person would understand - with drawing, explanations and shit. And they answer is just:
"Thanks"
"Ok"
"I dont get it"
"Can you please do it"
"you spelled that wrong"9 -
Somehow, the company I work for has decided it is ok for people to have their dogs in the office.
One of the dogs is such a sissy, cries and make stupid noises - I has been so for many many month.
Yesterday, when we had our asses full of stuff to do. The dog decided that it really have to take a dump inside the office and start barking (more like "veff").
So I turned around, to my other collegue and asked him really loud:
"Should groceries really do that?"
He is asian, he liked the joke. But the owner did not.4 -
One thing that I really hate is experienced programmers who don't threat newbies with kindness and act like "masters of everything"... Don't do that. :/12

How do you salvage a really hard question on a whiteboard interview?
Ans: "I'm sorry, I don't code on light theme"!
Via reddit user csquestions5583292 -
Look babe, i love you. I really do, and i will make time for you, and have dinner dates & go to movies, and beaches, but please just let me finish my f*$&ken code!!5

Applying to a school for CS major, and they can't even fix their website to not have a null pointer exception...
Do I really want to go here?13 -
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020 from BG. I'm protecting my cat from the 2 hour barrage of fireworks outside. I wish you all well, I really do!3
-
I would kill all these +1 guys, srsly. I subscribe these threads to know if it will be implemented.
You do not add any value to issue:
* devs are pissed off as this does not help solving problem
* others are pissed off
No one really cares about your likes, really.28 -
Pure spite really.
I do things better out of spite.
I picked my career out of spite, finished my degree out of spite, and currently work out of spite.20 -
So I didn't really like my old setup, it wasn't comfortable enough, so I set this up today! What do you guys think?3
-
I really don't get people that use their IDEs with white backgrounds. How do they manage to keep their eyes from frying?!10

Today I found this sticker in the Microsoft merchandise shop.
Now I don't know what to do. I find this epic, but I don't really like Windows. 😥10 -
Why the fuck do all (smart) TVs have such a shitty UI/UX? I don't really use TVs and I was shocked when I tried one. Apparently it's a thing, it's not just that one I tired...4

It makes me feel like a whore when looking for jobs.
I don't really wanna do it, but I'm in a situation where i have to do it to survive.6 -
Friend: "i really don't understand why our school didn't teach us HTML as first programming language, you can do some stunning looking website with it"
Me: 🤔10 -
I've dealt with dusty computers, REALLY dusty computers, computers owned by smokers.
I've seen dead beetles and earwigs and spiders with their cobwebs in computers and dealt with them.
I've even seen live moth larvae wriggling about in a computer.
But never, have I ever had to deal with fluids. Until today.
I had to take apart a laptop that had been used as a toilet by a cat. It was still wet, but not warm.
And I had to try to get data off of it. But no, the urine was not compliant.
So, already pissed off customer was less happy about the fact that her data would still be a few days away from recovery to a new computer.
At least her frustration wasn't at us.undefined really i really do really really gross but cat pee though it got on everything i feel bad for her6 -
"I just hacked your website"
Me: Oh really? What did you do?
"Ran DDos attack using this third party website haha"
Me: 😃1 -
Max file size allowed is 10 MB, and this is what I get when I try to upload a 5 MB file. Do I really want to apply here?15

Client: "Help me I can't find my programs"
Me: "Have you installed them right?"
Client: "Yes, I have"
Basically I spent an hour explaining him that dragging an installer from the download folder to program folder isn't actually installing...6 -
Do Travis CI's email subjects really need to say "Still failing". As if I don't feel bad enough.
Fuck you Travis i'm trying!!!1 -
I work for Google and Facebook.
Well... is that really true?
Uh... well, does a cow work for a farmer?
Hmmm... not really voluntarily... the cow just kinda gets milked and then the farmer sells its milk.
Yeah. That’s what I do. They milk me for my attention - and then they sell that to corporate advertisers.
Yeah... Hmmm... well, I guess you do work for them... but you don’t get paid...
I can still put it on my resume though, right?10 -
Fuck, I am really exhausted.
I am really burnt-out, I can't do this shit anymore.
Fuck this shit, here is my letter of resignation.
It is already signed, I won't do this shit anymore.
I will be jobless, but fuck this, I won't spend any more minute here.
*drop microphone*
The party is over.4 -
"Yeah I code, I've created like tons of games and I bet I'm better than pretty much anyone out there"
Oh really? What languages do you know?
"Scratch"
*anger rising*4 -
I really really want to start working.
I have social anxiety, but my mom is really on my ass about bringing in money. I need some sort of job that I can do from home on my computer.
Something related to programming.. Administration.. Whatever. I don't mind having to learn something new to find work.
I have no formal qualifacations.
I don't care how easy or hard it is, as long as I can make at least $100/mo.20 -
Does anyone else really dislike "foo", "bar" and "baz"? Because fuck me I do. My brain can't process that stuff, I need some actual real world context.
or, maybe i'm just dumb.8 -
Do you guys know any Github repos with really Bad C++ code?
Just wanna see if I can understand it, as a test... 🤔9 -
Guys, does anyone promise himself to work on a personal project on the weekend which he really is excited about working on. Then he ends up having done nothing but play a game or go out?
Like i have this idea that i really wanna make but i just cant get myself to sit down and actually do it. :/9 -
My situation: I got computer, router, phone, printer etc. all at one place
Now I decided to do some cable management...
I don't really know how to do cable management so I grabbed some duct tape ... This area now looks like this6 -
Teacher: You should plant trees at least on your birthdays. Go green.
Me: I do it daily Sir! Check my Github, its really green.
:D2 -
I just automated the tasks I had for next week. What to do, what to do ^^ This is not really a rant but just me boasting. Time for beer.3
-
Someone should really keep all the funniest rants and do a standup comedy. I laugh here more than watching a comedian on comedy central.4

Rails console:

It's right there, ffs4 -
As the first and only dev in our family[including relatives], I find it really hard to answer them whenever they ask me about what it is that I actually do at work.5
-
Fucking kill me. Is this really all we do with our lives?
1,715 JIRA-related emails. ALMOST TWO THOUSAND EMAILS. I mean seriously, that's BY FAR the largest email filter I've got. I mean I had them muted of course, but when you really think about the whole thing... are we just wasting our lives chasing some garbage that doesn't really matter? ugh.
Death approaches...9 -
It hurts man, it fucking hurts
I feel like I'm a ghost, like im not there. I don't really exist
I try to be better, actually doing something, anything. I really do. But nothing changes. So many times have I decided to finally make the change. This time I'm really gonna make it out of here. Yet I'm still here. Not one thing has changed. I'm still a shell of a person
It really fucking hurts
I just want to exist17 -
I love programming.. I really do.. But sometimes bugs drive me crazy... Long story short.. I'm getting a new laptop don't ask what happened to the other one2
-
Sometimes I want to tell my friends how exciting and fun my job is but then I remember that they still don't understand what I do after numerous attempts to really dumb it down 🙃2
-
I guess someone couldn't be arsed to dedent a whole load of code. I can't really criticise though: I do it too.4

Getting called by my dad "how do I make a local network with my phone?"
"I don't fricking know, I don't have your phone"
"Well you are the tech guy"
Really now?11 -
I'm procrastinating until I have more motivation or until the deadline is really close and I have to do it anyways.2
-
My boss is letting a really strong bus factor grow around me.
I try to show them how to do things but they really can't wrap their heads around it and I keep improving our stack/infrastructure ...4 -
Let's call my college colleague Andrew.
Andrew knows that we have a really tight deadline to complete 2 different assignments to deliver in the same weekend for evaluation.
Andrew says that we really knows about coding, although we doesn't understand the most basic principles about OOP (like encapsulation, for example).
Whenever I asked for help, Andrew said that is "going to do some research" and that what I'm asking is "really hard". He then asked every single other group if then could provide him, with some code so he could "understand" what I asked him to do.
Once they said "no" he would come and tell me he really tried but hadn't be able to do it, 2 days after needed it, delaying the whole project.
Don't be like Andrew.4 -
When my clients expect me to finish the software architecture ASAP and accuse me of procrastinating : Do i really need to explain how thinking works? 😤1
-
So I literally made a Gentoo ebuild just to install a OEM wallpaper..
I really need to do something with my life4 -

Today I showed some of my non-programmer friends results of a simple program I wrote (very simple but very visual). They really enjoyed it and even thought of alterations I was able to implement.
I really enjoyed feeling that what I do has meaning 😊
Hope you have a good day!1 -
I freaking hate school curriculums, I have only 5 classes this semester, only two of them are career related and one is about QA, I want to focus on my code, projects, things that really matter but instead I have to do Socials homework, learn how to do research papers, learn about marketing. I really hate this. Besides the classes I have on development are extremely light. And I have to pay for this crap12
-
I usually never had like a serious fight with a other dev I have a really good team but occasionally when I do this is my response. 🙂2
-
I was asked by developer if everything seems right on his repo. He basically cloned my setup and removed "unnecessary steps".
I love developers, I really do :D4 -
My internship is starting to make me feel really stupid
The issue seems easy but I literally have no clue what to do or even where to start. :(9 -
The client asks me to do some task today.
After I successfully submitted the compiled task, client asks, but do we really need this thing?
I was like, -_-
We all have been there, haven't we?3 -
Me: man, I really want to work on my project but I don't know what to do
Brain: You should document your code, it doesn't have a single fucking comment, you stupid lazy fuck
Me: oh ok, I will do that ...1 -
So I thought “wow, alcohol aerosol should probably catch fire and burn really quick. I bet I can burn my hands if I do this”.
So I poured pure alcohol into a spray bottle and sprayed it right onto a lit up lighter in my hand.
It burned really quick.
I burned my hands.
I was right.
Affective disorder be like9 -
I really really really don't like Windows. The amount of awful updates that I have to do all of the time, the fact that my mother just had Windows updates try and run, fail, try and run again, fail again, and then try a third time. But I'm stuck with it, because if I try and run a Linux live CD, my computer has a fit. Because Ryzen. Fantastic21

Hey all... I have a question...
So, I m really burnt out of coding (C++ guy here)... I have always been learning something but never built anything... I really wanna make some game or something but it jst takes soooo long... M really lacking motivation and m soooo through learning stuff for now...
Please suggest what do i do? (Cant change language... I find all others boring... No offense)12 -
I really do wonder at what point the previous developer on this project thought 800 line functions are totally reasonable and standard practice...7
-
I love how different figures in tech got really different reputations.
Take Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. We all love Elon.
What did they do different? What did they do wrong?6 -
Learning mainly C# and Java in college, started coding js and python in my free time. I really do love them all!2
-
Apple is really worried about their huge failure with the i9 6-cores, worried they won’t sell.
How do I know? Well, this...2 -
I really don't like billing time for things I am not really sure how to do and need time to educate myself on. This happens more often than my wallet is comfortable with and I spend more time learning than making money. How do you go about staying in an estimate or fixed budget when something comes up that you don't know anything about?7
-
How do you deal with interview rejection? I thought I could be stronger especially since I'm in my late-ish 20s... But that hasn't helped. I still tear up and get really, really down.7
-
devRant's gamification really does work! I find myself coming back at least twice a day :O
How often do you check in here?6 -
I'm pretty sure my browser is always open when I'm using my linux machine because I always don't know how to do what I really want to do.3

Hi everyone
I'm currently an intern in a startup
I started 3 months ago and I will finish in 1-2 months
From the beginning, all the team is very nice with me and say that I do a really great job
I could learn many many things and I can say my ideas during the project
This is a message to CEO/CEO, you see, if you offer a really good internship with interesting tasks and technologies, student like me are really motivated, want to learn, want to really participe to the project even if I do more hours than I have to do
Because we, students, are like you : interested in new technologies and great ideas
Offer good internship and you will be happy to have good and motivate intern in your Company
Thank you! -
I know this really isn't the place for this, but I REALLY need help..
I need to add app scaling inside my game.
To do this, I need to listen for a MouseDragEvent (or similar) on a JavaFX object like a Label or Image.
Here is my SO post:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...
Thanks in advance!22 -
I really feel like coding right now, but I don't have time. Problem is: when I do have time and I have to code I probably don't want to anymore.
-
So today I passed my C# exam with more than 900 points (out of 1000) which I had to do for my company. They really appreciate that I got such a score that I got this really expensive bottle of champagne!
Man, I love this company already. It only has been 2 weeks I'm working there..6 -
I got really depressed today for many many self-inflicted reasons so i'd like to propose we change Rule 2 of Technology to "You will fuck up, and when you do, you will fuck up REALLY REALLY HARD."
-
The people around me only call me hacker. Kinda sad to not being able to talk to somebody understanding what I really do.
-
Impostor Syndrome...
I dropped out of university because of Maths (I'm not really that bad at maths, but that thematic wasn't really mine... But whatever) and obviously had no job nor any graduation (except my school thingy) and wasn't able to study something computer science related, because that's how it goes in Germany... (If you can't pass a certain subject, you will get blocked for the studies that involve that subject for 2 years or sth... Because I failed in Maths meant that I'm fucked)
So I started an apprenticeship to atleast do something and get that degree.
In my new company I really felt (and sometime feel it nowadays) like I'm the fifth wheel on the car and don't really achieve anything (but i really do).
That really fuckin sucks and hinders the fun that I could have in my job :/6 -
How do you guys deal with work that doesnt really care about what you do?
I mean everyday i come to work i make my own schedule and think of things to do, then do them and at the end of the day noone really cares.
I’ve created a huge inhouse analysis tool and that was my job for a long while untill the project was mostly done. Now it feels like i just go to work to sit there for the hours and collect the paycheck, i watch youtube for half of the day and noone cares. Noone really knows what i do there. I feel like shit because i need to fight with myself everyday that i didnt finish something, but noone besides me really even knows of what i do though. I work alone and I think thats a big part of it. What should I do?3 -
I probably should learn how to take vacations more often, not only when I feel mentally exhausted souch that I can't really do anything5
-
Reactive Java.
I actually rather like it, I really do. But the shift in mindset required, and the limited advantages (especially with fibres under heavy development) both mean I think it's incredibly unlikely to last.5 -
Having to fill skills field in my internship CV suddenly makes me realize that i actually am not really good at anything.
Some friends say that i'm a can-do-it-all person when i actually just learn how to do what i need to do on the spot.3 -
Hey !
I just discovered an app called Shell Launcher, which is a launcher, where you type commands to do tasks :D
I really love it, i feel like a Hacker.

Is it just me, or are web chatbots actually really annoying and way too intrusive. It's like "omg look guys we have a ChatBot, we can do really cool technical stuff!" If a ChatBot can't ease my oversized heap of depression, I do not want to talk to it.6
-
How do I keep improving as a dev?
By reading blogs (what a dull answer damn). But I really liked CodingHorror, JoelOnSoftware and Jon Skeet's. But they've all become stale :(3 -
Oh no 😱
.
So I have a database with 12 tables, It grows really slowly and it's not really important, so I just do a manual backup once in a while.
.
Today, I wanted to do a backup, and realized that the content of the only table I cared about has disappeared.
.
I miss you Data, rip7 -
Im getting interested in two languages. Namely: Ruby and Python. both seem like really good languages.
which one do you think would i be better off learning?11 -
Which playlist do u guys use while programming? I listen to this on Spotify. It's really good!
https://open.spotify.com/user/...5 -
Fuck..I lent someone my laptop and they returned it with a different power adapter and most of the keyboard keys don't respond when I press them. Now I can't code or do anything coz all I ever do is code, really.4

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
I love it when a friend calls for help... i really do. But why the fuck it's all about hacking someone's account.2
-
What do you guys do to get away from conputers? I, for one started practicing card magic and i say it's really helped me. Card magic and programming are 2 polar opposites. For card magic, social inter action is necessary while programming gets pretty lonely. Anyways, i'm really curious about your other hobbyes33
-
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
I don't :< Honestly, it's just something I don't really think of and I either waste time or do actually work. No need to push myself
-
I really like how there is something new everyday that you can do to protect your privacy even more 😄3
-
I love most of the usernames here, I really like how most choose funny names related to developing or what they do, don't you also like that fashion?11
-
Ask yourself: 'What do I really care about?'
Then find a company that makes a positive difference regarding those things.1 -
Client: I need you to integrate with this API.
Me: ok cool, but what are we doing with it (where does the data go/styling)?
Client: what do think we should do?
Me: well it would be really cool if we did it like this *short and sweet explanation of really cool functionality and design*
Client: I LOVE IT! Let's do it, oh also I need it done by tomorrow...
Me: *GOD DAMNIT, why do you always do this...don't you dare say ok* ok, yeah I can totally do that.
...now at the market stocking up on redbull2 -
Noob: How do I start my career in web development, do I do a course in Coursera, Udemy, or...
Me: Don't do any of this, use Mozilla MDN web doc.
I really wish the younger me followed this advice when starting up...3 -
actually my sis is really disappointed i can't do
* cash system programming
* cnc programming
* light show programming
* get the adress of the guy who wrote her on whatsapp
so she is curious what i am able to do :)3 -
I'm currently trying to get better at python and to learn django. And here I am, following a c++ course I found on safari books.
Really, sometimes I don't know why I do certain things...2 -
Me: yeah I am a full stack node.js web developer
Client: so can u do javaFx
Me: that's not really what ur hiring me for :/1 -
best teacher? i wont really consider it teaching but it had really helped me a lot in my 1st year of programming.
me: *sends an email* hey i dont really understand how to do this part
teacher: i dont really know how to explain it so i coded it myself *sends me code*
me: oh thanks! *copy paste to mine*
after a week:
I GOT A PERFECT SCORE!! but ofc now i dont trust the teacher's code anymore. i deal with my own code.1 -

Do any of you use graph databases. If so what? I am not able to understand where they really fit in.6 -
Big company asking me about query optimization during a DEV position interview... Do you really have no one better than me to optimize your queries?
I'm really afraid of your codebase now... Might decline if I pass...7 -
As a begginig dev I found myself jumping between languages so often I start to feeling that my gaining of knowledge stopa. Probably because I've didn't figured out what I really want to do.2
-
I fucked up my MySQL installation...
AGAIN!!
Whenever I really feel like programming in my free time (which became really rare), I fuck something up and spend half of the night fixing it. Once it’s fixed I’m done, don’t wanna do anything anymore..
I should just start programming and set up the infrastructure afterwards.. at least I would get to do some programming then..9 -
Just wondering, what kind of music do you listen to when you're programming ?
I usually listen to trance when I really have to focus on coding, helps to clear my head, but I do listen to other stuff when i'm working at a more relaxed pace.10 -
i am coding blindly cause i am not really sure how the function really works. thats how i get things done after 2 weeks. but at least it works out after a while. buuuut i just want to get this thing done uuuggghhh i need to do this faster!
mind please cooperate with me1 -
So I had this awesome idea yesterday, and I was really in to it and all, so before I started working on it I googled some stuff, and while looking for something (how do you generate session cookies) I just found out that somebody did EXACTLY what I wanted to do. Now I'm sad.7

Fellow devRanaters, I'll have my first interview on Monday for a summer internship in a really good looking company. What should I do to prepare myself? Any suggestions?18

I really want to build a raspberry pi cluster but I don't know what to do with it...
Has anyone of you ever built a raspi cluster?
What could I do with it?9 -
Does anyone actually develop in Notepad++? I can't bring myself to do it because the UI is so dated nowadays, but the syntax suggestions are really good.9

I really do wish that there are parallel universes. So, there might be a universe where I am not maintaining legacy code.1

Why do I find really hard to connect with my coworkers?! I'm an introvert but after few months in my old job I connected with everyone. In my new job I find it really hard! And it's almost a year! 😥😫5

Are desktop PCs becoming a legacy, a history, just like floppy disks or CDs? Do you have one? Do you really need it?
I do have a decent tower pc in my balcony since last year. Haven't used it since early August and I honestly don't know what would I use it for once I bring it back in28 -
Hello. I suppose I didn't really see anyone ask @dfox or @trogus how it's going without mentioning devRant itself. So, I'm going to do it... How is it going?10

i dont know sql, gotta look shit up and dont much of it really internalized
i may be now being assigned somebody else's task to do some sql shit
fucking kill me3 -
what should i do, any ideas?
i'm a student and have a very good payed job (19h/week). Im stressed and have an ill feeling at work, not beacsuse of others but because i really Dont like the job and dont know if im good at it.
this feeling and the job is affecting my studies. I could take a job, at my university, which is muss less payed but really fun.
Do you have any advise guys?7 -
Quick question. How do i get myself to believe that I am good enough. I am good at what I do people tell me and i really want to move towards part time lecturing but the idea terrifies me... But i really want to help others and currently just being needed when others need me doesnt make me feel i am able to help others enough..
In short, how do you deal with an internal problem with wanting to help but being afraid others wont take ke seriously.4 -
Better ideas:
I love building stuff and when i have something that I'm really into, it's hard to concentrate on the boring stuff i need to finish first.
Sometimes i just need to do what i feel like doing, doesn't matter. No, i won't go to bed, no i can't do the other stuff, i need to do that!1 -
I love Laravel, I really do... but it does make me feel like pulling my hair out quite a few times daily.5

Do you know how MySQL got it's name? Well, it's a really interesting thing one should know. Atleast, I find it really amusing.
~Michael "Monty" Widenius is one of the founder of MySQL and one of his daughter's name is My(after whom MySQL was named).~7 -

Committed my code for Code review
solved 23 Merged Conflicts
Fixed 65 Load project Error.

Javascript I'm trying to love you I really do.
But what did Webpack do to my named capture groups?3 -
Fuck. The random and annoying screen flickering is back.
It was a good year without it.
Damn.. do I really need to replace the battery again... Damn it!11 -
Any email I receive mentioning SharePoint is unsubscribe to and blocked. I should really setup a rule to do this for me automagically.2
-
So ... Do I get a confirmation or not? What is happening?
Stuff like that really makes me think if the Webservice is trustworthy ... 🤔2 -
I'm not a dev, but the laziest thing I do is probably not programming at all or just copying stuff without much thinking... just not really trying1
-
Help me out,
Being a front end dev I suck at back end. I can do some stuff but some of the concepts and other things I really struggle to grasp.
Sometimes when I’m real clueless or have no idea how to do a task the best thing to do is ask one of the senior roles but whenever I ask him he rolls his eyes and huffs and puffs. I get it dev is quite a independent thing and you should do research etc. But it makes me feel so bad and I suck as if I don’t get the question he asked correct or I don’t understand he gets real impatient. I really do try I don’t want people to do it for me of course so I want to to understand but I just get moaned at. What do I do???4 -
So, I've been trying to learn assembly. However, I can't find any assembly docs online, so I can't really do anything. I tried NASM and FASM but I just can't understand assembly. Do y'all know any decent way to learn assembly? (My dad said it's better to do it on my pi or should I do it on my desktop?)7
-
So I really like Linux, but I also have to use windows and can't do a dual boot because of space issues. Guess I'm stuck with bash for windows...9
-
I am trying to convince my friends to use signal so I can delete WhatsApp but they don't want to.
They don't really care about privacy.
Do you have any tips?5 -
"I don't know about changing that part of the platform"
-"Do you see any other way?"
"No, but this one is pretty complex"
-"Would you like me not to do it?"
"No, but like, really test it, OK? It's a very complex part of the platform"
-"Would you like me to include the phrase 'this was really fucking complex' in the release documentation?"
Sometimes I think my boss is against coding :/ -
I don't wanna be ridiculed for this, but I have really been meaning to ask. What is people's obsession with the dark theme? It seems like such a noob thing to do.6
-
Joined dev rant yesterday. First thing I do today after reaching office is open dev rant and scroll through... really loving it...1
-
Do you have a favorite status bar app? I have been using polybar since I switched to bspwm in December, and I've been really happy with all the customizations and plugins you can write for it, but I just wonder if anyone has been using any other bars that do something they really love.8
-
I just failed the same maths module for the second time
At this point after working really hard and even getting a private tutor I really think I'm not cut out for this shit.I just don't know what to do right now.6 -
Typical Windows 10:
When you don't need to do something fast - I'm super fast OS, I have no bugs and I won't throw BSOD's
When you need to do something REALLY fast - Hey, I've got some updates, I'll be installing them during several eternities and I'll throw you some BSOD's cause I can
PS. In such cases I really want to install linux1 -
All I needed to do was temporarily change a 4 row by 5 column css-based <div> layout to a 2 row by 3 column css-based <div> layout. The layout is now right but links don’t work for no damned apparent reason. I really really really really really suck at my job as a coder and I just need to go live in a cave and never, ever touch a computer again.5
-
I wonder...
Does anyone really indent with spaces by themselves? I would not if my IDE didn't do it for me.5 -
Fellow next to me asked how do I deal with assignments so quickly. I told him that I don't ask any questions and just do my work. He proceeded asking me questions during the entire session. They don't really listen do they?
-
Trying (for fun) to run a GNUStep Obj C program that calls c headers has proven something to me:
I really do not know what I am doing with makefiles and should probably slowly and respectfully walk away to continue doing what i was doing in c++
Kids, documentation reading is important.
I also do happen to really like objc1 -
You ever agree to do something that you really don't want to do because you don't want to piss off the other person?
Like, I could've avoided doing this shit if I just were an asshole. Ugh6 -
That feeling when you really wanted to get the most of your travel time and do some programming. Access denied I guess?!4
-
I some how shocked my head/brain (electricity) ... Wonder if it will impact my code 😅 .... Do feel a bit rough I'm really having a fucked up week.

I really dislike conflicting support. Tell me what I need to do to fix your service, don't offer maybes...3
-
Why Google? Why?! Why do you always asume my language and what the fuck do you really think I can only speak one language? Fucking prick Google.1
-
I think I am really passionate bout programming and want to build something innovative but I need a fellow programmer to do it with. I am ready to put any kinda work in!1
-
I really do love programming, but I really do hate implementing features that will make the database and code way more messy and complex. Which would be fine, if I wouldn't be quite sure the feature is utter bullshit and the user just can't really frame what they need.
And yes, I've asked my boss if he's sure if that's what they want and if not the other feature I implemented will fit those needs too. Yes, he is sure that they're sure they need exactly said requested feature.4 -
Sitting and making mobile phones do what i want. When i tell them what i really do they just say:"I don't any word you say, but i think it's good!" 🤔

When I started branching out from frontend development and took an Intro to OOP course. I still do web, but getting more into the giant world of programming was really inspiring!

I really want to learn Go, but I'm not sure where to start! devRanters who are also Gophers, what tools/resources do you recommend for a beginner?2

My worst recruiter experience is... Well, I don't have any. What I do have is a really good experience with an internship. And by good experience I mean it's good that I'm not there anymore!
-
This is a little shameful, but i dont tell people i do IT since it leads to a , "wow you must be really smart, i could never do computer science" discussion.
Alot easier to connect with people without a plethora of stereotypes attatched to your SEO of a name3 -
How do you do java style oop with classes and inheritance and all that in c++?
Do I really have to make a header and a source file for each class?
And while we are on it: are there any sources of "famous" games written in cpp?8 -
I just spent an hour researching about how to do this thing in a particular JavaScript framework when I remembered I can do it in CSS 🤣 I'm so embarrassed I really need to practice my vanilla
Worst of all I did find StackOverflow answers with the framework solution but it's so easy in CSS -
i might not have ssh access to live instances but i can redirect live traffic to test instances and debug my shit there!
... no but i really do that2 -
One of my biggest pet peeves with C++ are the number of ways to do things that, I personally, don't think their should be. Is that int* really an int pointer? Or is it an int array? Int vector? I am really regretting the refactoring approach I took.
-
I really don't know what to do with those projects which I started confidently but then left when it was about to finish because I lost motivation3
-
I believe that there are 2 paths. Either a successful job(a really high salary) or building your own business. Which do you prefer? I prefer to have my own business.17

Parents were supportive in that they forced me to go to college, but let me do whatever I wanted while there.
Pretty sure they still don't really know what I do.1 -
"When I try make a change, system XYZ is not happy do you know why?"
Really? That's all you're giving me to go on? -
The longer I go at this job, the more I feel unqualified to be doing it!
My boss is giving all these really fascinating ideas and things to get done... but he's not really describing it well on how to do it... just to do it. My creativity is being tested...2 -
Question for the ones who use a smartwatch: do you think the price (e.g.: 250€) is worth it?
I really like the idea of the facility of not having to pick the phone for some things, but I don't know if it is really that useful. What do you think?9 -
For iOS and OSX devs. Do you really know how auto layout works? It is something I do but don't know how it works6

Everyone is shooting, I can't even play because it is so loud outside and do not try to open windows coz you will die from poisoning in seconds...2 -
An old visual basic 6.0 handbook someone gave me many years ago.
I really liked working on VB6.0 and then moving to .NET 2008.
Nowadays, I love and do web development. -
Because of a previous post today I looked up the cost for these bootcamps. Is really someone out there paying 15.000$ for something you could learn for free ? Why do people do this ?2
-
My father was working in IT, I once saw him writing a simple code in Basic. I was impressed that You can force a computer to do whatever You want it do do. When he got a Windows PC, I started coding in Pascal with him, and I really liked it. Needless to say, I'm a coder now :-D1

Need some advice. I’m a uni student and I really want to go into machine learning, data science, or computer vision. I have most of the skills and I feel I am fairly competent. However, the only professional experiences I have are web dev based. How can I make myself more appealing for data based roles? I really don’t want to do web dev anymore hahahahah5
-
I am a beginner here .. may some one help me to know what I can do with the app? I would really appreciate it 💓🍃🙈13
-
Why oh why do I always write "clock" instead of "click".
Answer: I suck at typing ofc.
I'm glad I'm not dyslectic. I have a couple of coworkers that does suffer from it and they say they have to doubly-review whatever they write. That must really suck. They say I'm really lucky to be able to catch typos as I write stuff.3 -
I just got into elixir and i want to build something just to practice the language. Suggest me something please cause I don't really know what to do...3

I recently came across the "Xposed framework" for Android and it seems really really interesting to me.
I use it to playback songs on YouTube (app) while accessing other apps (simple but helpful) . Anybody else with any modules/experience/knowledge about the same, do comment, I wanna know more about it.7 -
I really don't balance social and dev life. I know I need some time to socialize but I just can't. It's like my life right now is in front of a computer and lines of code... Not that I don't like it, but I know I need to do other stuff besides coding, but I really don't know what to do and how to manage time. If anyone can give some advice, it would be great.2
-
No one was really surprised.
They mostly told me all my life that's what I should do because I always liked video games and was on the computer a lot.
I mean, I can see how it might have helped a bit, but it doesn't really have that much to do with it.1 -
As much as I prefer dark themes, I do prefer the Colorful theme for Office 365. Really helps all its apps stand out and gives them personality.

I really want to like MongoDB, I really do, but the query/update language completey negates any fun
Try doing any non trivial operation in a single db query (aka. efficiently) from a language that's not JavaScript if you really want to hate everyone and everything7 -
I have a few ideas I'd really like to spend time working on, but I find myself wanting to do other things after working on software all day!

"No, the Client doesn't like stored procedures so we have done all our TL parts of the ETL using a bunch of views on top of views on top of views."
Wish I could have been here at the start so I could have pushed back, sigh.
Siiiggghhhh, yet the client is anal about performance and even consistency in SSIS packages.....siiiggghhhhhh but we dont have SHOWPLAN permissions or even sp_who2 access...siiiigggghhhhhh.
If i expanded one of the final views, would be like 1k lines. For the amount of data, we move, there shouldn't be any noticeable processing time but it can take anywhere from 10mins to an hour.2 -

So my boss moved me to build some software to IoT devices we have because he didn't have the time to do it. But I haven't used C since college (I mostly use Java), but I'm trying to handle it. But right now we are developing a feature that is taking longer than expected and he comes over and tells me how easy it is to do it. Really? You were trying to do it that way for a shit ton of time and it didn't work, do you really expect it to work because it's me? Fucking hell!

I am a junior in college and I’m trying to get an internship this summer as a web engineer at a company I really like. I have never had a CS internship before and I’m not really sure how to prepare. What are the chances that I would have to do something like a whiteboard interview? Any tips or recommendations are welcome

I probably got an internship for this summer and I'm really really excited for it.
However, I've juste finished my first year of CS and it's my first internship and it makes me really scared that I'll be unable to do anything. Like sure I know OOP and how to code, but what will I do in a business?
Do you have any tips or so? It would help me a lot, I really want to do it well.3 -
I'll do the tests later on it'll be fine. 3 releases on, There are bugs everywhere - I cannot handle the regressions. Why'd this happen..Yeah.. Really need to do some proper TDD at some point.
-
Is client side rendering really that bad? Do you prefer sites without any JavaScript or are you ok with it?
To me it's very convenient to have JS in very dynamic pages. For things like documentation I think server side rendered pages are good enough. I mean it's 2017, right? Do we really need to care for those who deactivate JS? I mean I really like it to separate the front end backend.
What do you think?6 -
Not having ever completed a project, except for a really simple app my school asked me to do. It's like I start to make something, anything, but then I lose interest in it pretty quickly. I guess it's because I can't come up with an idea of something that I think would be really useful/fun.
-
I honestly think I should attempt finding a job that's around my interests, since I want to get a laptop and I just can't really do much without money in general.
Don't know what I would really be able to do in terms of jobs, but I guess I'll go exhaust my resources. -
How can I get into environmental protection as software engineer? Coral reefs and 🌊 life in general holds my interest the most, but can be anything really.
I would really love to do something meaningful with my skills.
P.S. Not related to protection, but would be really cool to get into sea exploration software + robotics.11 -
Hello!
I have created gitframed because I believe that code really is an art medium.

I'm better at getting work done when I have work to do.
Put your phone on airplane mode, turn off internet on your computer (unless you really need it) and write down what you need to do and when it's due. Just do it.1 -
Before 2019 ends, I wanted to do something really adventurous...
Testing a major backend change directly on the production app (seriously) .3 -
Niklaus Wirth
Do I really need a reason? Kids don't know computers before him, and people my age will know him and his contributions2 -
I have for a very long time wondered about, what do people do when using git and databases? If I locally add new columns to the db, how in the world would you easily make the change in production?
Do I really have to manually do it or take the time to make scripts for it?2 -
I really want to see where all this ridiculous shit ended up leading I really really do
Like I don’t know if they expect I’m going to live to be 120 years old

Are you an off-shore contractor working for a US company? How do you really feel about working US Hours?
I have several contractors on my team who say "I'm willing to work any shift" but I need you to be honest with me on devRant... how do you really feel? Do you have families? Do you prefer to work your normal hours? Why do all of my contractors martyr themselves to work whenever they think makes me happy?
I can work around your requests, I'd probably get better work if you're happier and well rested. I'm not sure what I'm missing, are these hours actually better for you and your family?2 -
Is it me or Android Studio is really slow with last updates? I mean from last 2 or 3 months it takes a lot to do anything1

I usually don't get into competition, you know, because I don't feel that anyone needs to judge me the way I do what I do,
But I gave myself a competition to earn that gold 🏅 medal half way through my cs course, and now I've come to know that I've miserably failed,
> I feel a little depressed
> I feel a lot sad
> I want to get drunk but I can't, I live in dry state
To be really honest, I wanted to earn this medal to get some recognition, I want to cry really really hard but then what's the point
On the positive side I've got a job now, so that's there -
If you were through a long phase (year or two) of zero to minimal learning and lots of procrastination, how did you finally break it?
I used to be in a Company with really less work load and now I procrastinate a really lot, despite having work to do.1 -
How to remain consistent? Like I really do love what I do. But if there is a task that I can complete in like 2 days, I would allocate 1 week for that task, procrastinate for 4-5 days and finish it in the last day.5

OKAY GUYS I NEED YOU. I have an idea for an app (bet you’ve heard that before haha) and I really want to make it.
I have to learn swift, so online tutorials are my go to (pls recommend material).
However, I’ve never really done backend before, and I’ll need it to make my project (accounts & stuff). Where do I start for swift/iOS backend programming? Do I need to buy a server? Where do I host the stuff?
Pls help8
