We were all 16 once right? When I was 16, my school had a network of Windows 2000 machines. Since I was learning java at the time, I thought learning batch scripting would be fun.

One day I wrote a script that froze input from the mouse and displayed a pop up with a scary “Critical System Error: please correct before data deletion!!”. It also displayed a five minute countdown timer, after which the computer restarted.

I may or may not have replaced the internet explorer icon on the desktop with a link to my program on the entire student lab of computers. Chaos.

Friend: hey I started learning java..
Me: great, good luck.

*After few minutes

Friend: Hey I heard you're good in java programming..

Me: yeah I know stuff.

Friend: So can you teach me all good things in java?

Me: but..

Friend: half hour is supposed to be enough, right?

Me: hell no, it's not like that..

this stupid thinks half hour is enough to transmit all my career to his stoned brain..

So I've got a friend learning Java, using Eclipse.
I walk in one day and see him restarting his computer. I make nothing of it. Few minutes later, he's restarting again.
I jokingly say "Windows update?"
He responds with the straightest face ever: "No, compiling code."

Apparently he thought you needed to restart the computer before compiling.
Not sure if I should be mortified or laughing my ass off.

When someone at work says your Java multi threaded code is too advanced for other people to understand so you have to dumb it down. What part of constant learning in software they don't understand?

Had a plan to master JavaScript in 4 months and then, cover HTML and CSS in the next 3 months followed by Java in the remaining 5 months.

10 years later, I am still learning JavaScript.

I like ending lines of code with semicolons. It helps add structure and organization. My code feels naked without them. After learning to code in JavaScript and Java, it's force of habit to put them, and python's lack of them is one of the reasons I hate it's syntax

Maybe I'm old fashioned. All the hipster languages either make semicolons optional or usually actively discourage them

I don't have a ton of friends, but I do have a few. None of them can code (one has tried HTML/CSS and didn't get past the fundamentals). When I make something cool, and show it off to my friends they just don't understand the struggles and triumphs that were involved in that project. As a beginner/intermediate dev, feedback is huge and no one I know in person can give it to me. There are a couple people I chat with online that help me with my projects, but that's nothing like sitting down with someone and listening to their feedback, suggestions, ect.

Why do my friends have to be so non-techy?

Guess I should write a rant now.

We were initially a team of 2 to do a 'simple' app with AngularJS, NodeJS and Kendo UI in 2 months.

We had some problems with it, mainly because I'm 'in charge' of a big Java web application filled with legacy code and in process of a 'big change that was planned to be deployed for all users yesterday', and my coworker (also the project analyst) was still learning how Node and Angular work. And I'm not going to lie, I'm still learning new things everyday.

Situation 1 month after our start: coworker fired (due to offtopic reasons), replaced by a younger girl, and me still doing changes in the Java webapp.

Thank god I work better when under big pressure :p

I started learning python tonight to knock out some quick assignments, coming from a Java/C#/C background.

Must resist urge to put semicolons and brackets everywhere.

Italian schools are by far the worst in the world.
I'm in a IT oriented school, where we should learn to code.

We spent the first year writing in Word and "programming" in Excel.

In the second year we started learning Visual Basic, a total waste of time.

In the third year we finally got rid of most of the useless subjects we had and started learning C++.
Sadly we had a teacher who wasn't able to properly speak and teach to students who never really programmed.
We didn't even know what a class was at the end of the year.

In the fourth year, the current one, we didn't have a teacher for the first 3 months.
Now we are learning Java, but just the basics.
Oh, we're also "learning" HTML (not 5) and JavaScript.

Next year, the last one, we will do PHP and SQL.
Maybe also C#, the most pointless programming language in the world.

All the languages have a basic objective in mind that shapes both the language and it's community:
for c/c++ was low level hardware access and performance, for Java OOP and learning; Kotlin was mostly made to make dev life easier and tries to anticipate what you want to do instead of forcing his patterns and tries to help you instead of punishing errors.
As a dev at least i feel a little more cared about and less left alone (especially in the ugly world of Java for Android)

I have been learning / developing JavaScript (nodejs and the whole world around it) and I have to say that I love JavaScript 😍 but I would like to learn something new. Something completely different from web-development. I also have some experience in Java / Python so also something different than that.

Am I the only one who enjoys learning low languages like C/C++ and absolutely hate Java (seriously FUCK Java so much I hate using it)

Working with pointers and just having the compiler completely explode in your face because you forgot a semicolon or an index out of bounds maybe a bracket just disappeared and you are frustrated but then you fix it and voila it works like magic.

Maybe it's just a thing of mine because C++ was the first programming language I learned and I miss this feeling of hopelessness (I think I might have done BDSM fetishes) and it makes me feel nostalgic.

After two years of learning front end librairies and some javascript my mate just threw me into our java backoffice to help him do the testing.

I read so much shit about java， i was a bit apprehensive... But man the more i learn the more i think code is beautiful.

Well i for the first time am starting in java today and its beautiful as well ;) like，i can`t remember having had so much awe for something in a long time.

So apparently hiring these days is all about 1/3 learning random questions and answers 1/3 remembering algorithms from code execution portals 1/3 luck. Well fuck my life, it’s worse then 5 years ago when I last switched jobs.

I send my cv with exposed java interviewed for javascript and hired for python. At least then it was 50/50 luck.

The programming teacher was interested in Python, so I showed him what a script we made in Java would look like in Python, and he was so impressed he is thinking about completely changing the learning plan stuff to teach Python instead of Java. Now I'm not sure if I should've done that, because I was interested in the Java stuff and things and the other classmates would probably be completely confused if we take such a turn. :S

Back in early 2012, a favorite MMOG of mine shut down and I was interested in how it worked. I was 13 at the time. A friend of mine, on hearing of my interest, emailed me a bunch of links including Chris Pine's ruby tutorial and TheNewBoston.

From then on I tinkered a little with a bunch of different technologies, picked up a few programming books, and now we're here. I've made a little money as a Java developer and I'm working on an iOS game, but I'm still learning and tinkering with new technologies.

Ok, so I know a bit of Java, still lots to learn but isn't there always! My question to all you poly-linguist programmers is; once you know the basics of OOP are there any obvious hurdles in learning new languages? For instance - do you sometimes accidentally use some Java in C++? In Java, you're supposed to compile a source file in its package one directory up, outside of its package. You can't compile the source file in its own package directory, for it will state "cannot find symbol" on files in the same package, even though they're in the correct package directory. That can be quite confusing at first.

Given the following directory structure:

Yeah, you truly start learning how the compiler works when you don't use the luxury of a IDE but rather a raw text editor and a console.

Guys. I started with JS, now primarily code in Python, and learning Java for robotics. Coding on and off for the past 4 years. I understand most things, I can tell what code does, but I think I’m a shit programmer. I also find myself running out of ideas for simple things. I’m sad because of this cause I get most programming jokes, and live in this community.

The reason why I’m saying this is because of someone in robotics (keep in mind that it’s my first year in robotics, first time coding in Java) said (jokingly) that he thought I “was a good programmer”. Probs overthinking this, but still tears me up, realizing he’s probably right.

It's been 5 years this month since I started learning programming, getting interested after learning about Linux, wanting to do operating systems and games.

I started with C++, went on to C and assembly language for about 2 years and gave up on it for the most part.

Afterward did Java for two years and hated every second of it! Switched to Python instead (been using it since 2.7.5).

Now I do Haskell and JavaScript and those languages do everything so much easier I can never see myself ever going back!

I've been BSing my skillset for so long to myself, it's a veritable toolbox of mixed knowledge but no complete sets...

My main skill is basically just remembering anything I do, including code syntax and example code fragments well enough to quote at people which makes me a lazy learner.

So I've started a little project in Java that creates a db of all of my downloaded movie and video files. The process is very simple, but I've just started incorporating Machine Learning.

The process is quite simple: You load the files into the db, the program tries to determine the movie's name, year and quality from the filename (this is where the ML comes in - the program needs to get this and dispose of useless data) and then does an online search for the plot, genre and ratings to be added to the db.

Does anyone have any feature suggestions or ML tips? Got to have something to do during the holiday!

since everybody seems to hate gradle i would like to say how much i like gradle for its possibility to build even big java projects from the commandline without the need of a a lot o scripts and especially the possibility to create a wrapper in order to use it even when its not installed on said machine.
it is the only reason why i am learning java now (i fucking loathe eclipse at the moment).

and regarding its speed. i had both. windows and linux. and for some reason i could only verify its slowliness on windows.

So I've been self teaching myself Python, which I've loved learning. However I hit a wall. I'm terrible with large project ideas, which has brought everything to a halt.

Being that I loved learning python, I'm thinking of picking up a second language to fill the void & expand my knowledge. I've dabbled a little bit in Java & Haskell. Go looks pretty interesting.

In your opinion what would be a good complementary language to Python?

This may be a dumb question, but are there any benefits in learning c instead of going straight to c++ for microcontrollers? I'm in my first ee semester and wondered, because we are learning c and java (next semester), but not c++

Short question: what makes python the divine language for ML and AI. I mean i picked up the syntax what can it do that c++ or java cant? I just dont get it.

My week was going great, started an online course on coursera.org. It was on algorithms, somone recommended it to me here. After spending like an awesome 3 hours learning about dynamic connectivity algorithms, I find out I have to submit code in Java!!! If you hate Java then u get me, then there's a deadline, OBVIOUSLY!!! I only know the basic Java syntax, can't even believe I got this far without coding a project in Java. So now I have to polish up on Java and write a percolation java project, no biggie!

Ok so one of the advantages of Java is that it has a huge ecosystem of libraries.
Then why is there no fucking decent graph library?! I just need to display this planar graph. I'm so fucking close to learning c++ and using boost to layout the graph.

I decided I am going to get full into Minecraft modding. It will be an opportunity to learn Java and Kotlin. I want to explore some game ideas in a well defined sandbox.

Some things I want to explore.
1. AI that helps you build and survive. This fascinates me and seems like it could be a good challenge. I like the idea of learning how to separate structures into chunks. I think I will learn a bit about tree data structures here. Maybe learn something about BSP trees (if applicable).
2. The idea of an RPG quest system tacked onto a sandbox. I want to spawn structures and create non-repetitive story lines. Minecraft can be really desolate if you are not playing on a server. Worlds tend to be empty and devoid of story.
3. Maybe try a hand at terrain gen. This could be fun to explore entropy math. It is fun to draw things with math.

I am sure I will come up with other fun things to explore here.

Me being lazy, I wasn't able to end any learning series. Tried again with Java using YouTube videos. Feel asleep after 30 minutes, but the entire series kept running in the background.

After waking up I could understand great part of object based coding.

I seriously think that thanks to that now I know how to code. Like magic.

It was sort of interesting except now I'm asking myself, why the fuck is a machine learning company interested in knowing that you can manually build a rudimentary DB....

I regret not learning c++ earlier. I learned Java before and now I have to work with mainly c++ for its libs and it took some time to adjust also I've never used Java for anything useful so far.

I remember when I first heard about the general concept of a stack, I wasn't quite sure how you would use it.

Now im learning about stacks in java algorithms class as well as learning about how the memory stack works in assembly class. This probably seems small to you pro devs, but ngl, it kinda blew my mind how useful this structure can be.

I found this old book in my basement(it's from 2004). Would you recommend using it to improve my knowledge or would there be too much deprecated information? I already made a few (rather simple) android apps, but never really got to know java.

Learning Java for the new position I start in a lil over a week. Biggest struggle migrating from PHP is wrapping strings in quotes ONLY...no apostrophes lol. I guess I formed a bad habit. Also slightly frustrating is that you can't overload a method and set defaults. I guess you get that with Kotlin but this company is going to switch away from Java to GoLang and React, so I guess I won't really get to enjoy Kotlin.

I learnt a lot of my java background from Minecraft modding. I even went back a couple years ago when I was learning python and used the Minecraft python api to make my learning a little more interactive.

Should I take time to learn C# and the .net framework while doing my other project? Learning Java properly while doing a project as a student and reading what I had written just weeks ago - I had put all my logic into the DAOs, not thinking of creating a package for it 😌

I played around with game scripts (in C-like syntax) and even wrote my own (well, halfway) before learning some Java at school. Had a bad internship and decided to waste a few years by studying engineering, where I failed everything but programming. Before getting kicked out I exmatriculated myself then I kinda came to the conclusion of "How about doing something that seems quite natural to me?".

I felt inspired when I found out about Minecraft mods when I was in elementary school. I thought they looked so cool. I then went and actually bought a Java reference book but I never made any mods. Because Counter Strike came into my life and well I wasn't too proud of myself. But now I've quit CS:GO and I'm now committed to learning programing and I love it!

I'm currently learning Java right, I have never seen such a weird language in my life.
My background is Web Developing and some lua here and there. After a while playing around with Kivy and other alternatives to native Android Studio development I decided it was most probably time for me to start actually getting ready for the inevitable Android Studio.
Getting used to the GUI was easy, everything seemed to make sense and I was already used to IntelliJ.
But the issue came from Java, the number of ways that it's broken, just JVM by itself should be enough to condemn this language to eternal doom. Not even talking about the Syntax, coming from JS it was basically Hell.
I get it's more than useful, but seeing its History, Java should've probably stayed at its Oak stage lmao.

Prigression is stopped at the current job. I work with PHP, java and other related languages aaand jquery. I feel like I should start learning vue/angular and rewrite the 2000line jquery mess i have now for one of the projects.
Working as a freelancer after work - how do you guys find time to learn new languages/libraries and have a life at the same time?

I have never been this serious with my life as a whole as I have since I started learning computer programming. I struggled to read one book a year (I mean non programming book like self improvement books e.t.c). Now I have finished two books in a little over a month and started reading a third book this month all while still studying programming. I started out with python and was honestly terrified of Java because of the semicolons, curly braces, parenthesis in front of if/else if/else statements but one day I decided to take a peek into a few Java programming books and found one "Learn Java the Easy Way" by Bryson Payne and it changed my life, quite literally. I read more now, I look forward to getting out of bed and any day I don't read, I just don't feel right. I need to read something and learn at least one new thing a day. If I feel awful at night, I just remind myself of the one new thing I learnt that day and that puts a smile on my face.

Side note, I am self-taught and started studying programming last year around November/December. Spent about two months on python and in January or February, I started Java. Been on Java since. Almost done with the Java book and looking forward to reading a more advanced book when I'm done.

Curiosity as a kid with Visual Basic. Then university courses with Java and learning C++ on the side. And started the self learning journey from there. I never touch those 3 first languages anymore.

I've been familiar with C Programming and to sn intermediate level with web design, and currently I'm taking an introductory java Course, And The instructor kinda started with some simple gui apps using swing components on netbeans environment , his claim is that console apps are not that relative in the real word anymore , and gui apps are more interesting for newcomers , and I personally don't think it's a very effective approach , what's your opinion ?

3. Made few other desktop apps on vb6 for fun
4. Got interested in Websites so started with WYSIWYG Microsoft FrontPage
5. Started learning frontend and backend coding from WYSIWYG Dreamweaver (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
6. Then custom coding on Sublime. Made around 6 side projects (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
7. Started learning core JavaScript and followed by other programming languages
8. Interest came in making Android and iOS apps. I learnt Java and Swift for it
9. Now I span between Web and Mobile Apps

After a year and a half of semi-depression stuck in a Master Science in SE (while I'm a CS student in machine learning and don't give a bloody fuck about java plugins), I finally decided to switch to a CS major.
No more research money but damn, did not feel that relieved in one year !

For me it's chrome OS, taken a little hiatus from programming as it's been dragging my mental state down a bit so I've been focusing on writing my book and what programming I am doing is just me learning ground up java script development. So all I really need are my google docs services and a good code editor.

I'm about to start learning Android development. First it's the obligatory Get Started, then a couple of Udemy courses. After doing javascript for so long, i think it'll be nice to use a strongly typed language again (Java is my first language; college you know).

New Dev learning Java, what is a good free source to learn code?

Didn't know how to program but enrolled in a master's degree that needed that. So I attended the programming courses of the bachelor's degree that gave me just enough knowledge and just in time to save my ass writing a Hadoop MapReduce program! And I actually did well. All Java though.

These days I am banging my head against the wall learning Rust.

TL;DR Thinking whether to switch to Xamarin after learning Android Sudio(Java) for almost a year.

So, I've been learning android dev using Android Studio and Java, and I've made some progress. Not a lot, I finished a few projects for fun/practice the last of which was a project that took 4 month to finish, so I now am capble of making small or simple apps for android, and I have been thinking of switching to Xamarin. What do you guys think? Should I stick with Java/Android studio, or should I abandon it and start over with Xamsrin?

P.S. I am pretty good with both Java and C# so this isn't a concern.

Learning Java after learning python for School and helping the new programmers who are in the class I finished last term. I see python code and get nervous because there’s no semicolons or curly brackets, but then again I’m like “Fuck I miss python!”
But I’m usually the go to guy when people need help because I make YouTube tutorials for my colleagues to help them understand what I’ve learned, and share flash cards on quizlet, and generally tell anyone if you need help I’ll help.

I see a lot of people complain about uni degrees and stuff because they don't learn how to code etc. Is this really the standard?

I mean I'm only in fourth semester bachelor and had coding knowledge before starting uni. But we had basic to intermediate java in the first two semester, now learning how to write secure code and OS-Level stuff in C++, we had a module with practical Assembly coding all while still learning all the theory.

At the end of the first semester we had to write a terminal game in Java. I mean of course that's not "real experience" but if you dive in you definitely learn the basics you need to get started in real life.

Or am I wrong completely / just in a weird uni?

While learning Java back in campus and you were the only one who could nest some for loops and create some pyramid stars and the lecturer was on you to(Java Ninja) explain it to fellow classmates that felt good.

When I got to high school, I started learning Java from friends who were in programming class. Started out as a comp sci major in college and got sick of it, so I switched to a digital art degree. Got interested in Java again for the creation of art and music using generative processes. Then I got into web dev and JavaScript. Years later, still learning new programming concepts and making digital art on the side.

So I started learning Java and there are lots of boilerplate code. To use some Date functions there is a requirement to import it first before you can use it lol. In PHP and JS no need to import anything so less code.
