So I have implemented all the features required for the current release. Carefully reviewed my code several times, but no testing.
Tester: everything passed green. Not sure whether you're a good dev or I'm a bad tester.
Me: let's call it a draw.10 -
And thus another 365 days have passed and here we are. Woooh! In celebrations of the age++ I gave my little avatar his own cake while I now enjoy my own. Cheers!10

I just walked passed 2 technologically impaired ladies in my office (the kind who think google is on their actual computer) having an avid discussion about how "You can find Ajax everywhere on so many websites!".
I was super impressed until I realised they were talking about buying dish soap :/12 -
A fresh graduate software engineer applied to the company and passed the coding exam.
Manager: Wow you got a very high score. Good job.
Applicant: Thank you sir. So am I hired?
Manager: Yes of course. You will be the team lead for one of the project.
Applicant: Wait wut????8 -
My code passed the review today. It is now being pushed to production. I can't express my happiness 😅17

You know what's fucking scary?
If you change a big block of code and it compiles, all tests are passed and you don't even get a warning.
Just wasted 20 Minutes because I tried to look for a mistake6 -
Friend of mine passed away several years ago. All other friends known me as Cooke monster so finally got my tattoo. He drew it for me before he died so it's quite personal! But nice to have something to remeber him for!18

I've written a lot of bad code, seen a lot, but attached is the most recent 'worst' I've seen.
What makes the situation worse/funny is:
1. The developer's code comment.
2. Check-in passed a code review.
3. The 'legacy code' was written last week.29 -
To all dutch people on here, the new surveillance law I ranted about a month or something ago has passed if my source is correct.
Passed as in, the government has voted in favor.
Time to start encrypting/vpn'ing/torring and securing your computers!
Feel free to use this rant's comment section as Q/A and tips section for this subject as well :)39 -
Passed the online test.
Passed the technical interview.
Need to pass the final interview.
I'm applying to this company as a JS developer (backend). Their engineers are amazing and the fucking have 99.94% coverage on their test suiteeee; that gave me a code-boner.
If I get this job I'll finally say good bye to fucking PHPShit and Zend Framefuck and all this hacked bootstrap and 15k LoC "core.css/js"
I CAN DO IT10 -
I thank whoever made the jsRant, a client for devrant to view in js looking style in browser. Teacher walked passed by and asked what i was doing. I said i was exploring the source of the newest javascript framework. He said what is the name. I said semicolonJS. He asked who made it. I said some person who has fox in his name did it.
Thanks everyone! I had some laughs after he walked passed by without noticing anything.7 -
Not sure what triggers me more:
a) the fact that nowadays no one can type/spell without auto-correct
b) that this passed code review
c) that no one corrected it in 12 months since it's been committed23 -
Me: Listen dude, the code worked perfectly and all the test cases passed so I'm done here.
Also me: What is this? What the fuck is this? Why does this work? What witchcraft is this?
*Screams internally*1 -
My mom got cancer and passed away two years later. I had made several videos to document her life. All of that, plus photos and video of our family, lived on a backup drive that got dropped on the floor a few months after she passed away. Head crash that wasn’t discovered until it was turned on again and forever destroyed the platter. It was the largest set of photos and video I had of her. All forever gone.16

I want to thank every Indian computer scientist on Youtube. Because of these guys I passed my Algorithms and Data Structures Exam.10

A client asked me to add a mobile phone field to a registration form and asked me explicitly to use their server side validation for it.
Apparently they need a valid provider prefix, but after that everything goes. This was passed as valid mobile phone number.11 -

HOW. THE. FUCK?!
Luckily I am overtaking that domain and won't allow such bullshit. Mainly because I will be the author of the commits.17 -

So I passed my exams just now! This is one of the first official recognition of being a capable programmer for me which is a very big deal in my case.
One final thing before i could get my diploma was getting my hours signed of my second internship but they're ignoring me. Explained it to my mentor: "oh fuck that guy, I'll sign it tomorrow, you've made the hours and I'm not going to let some cunt get in your way of getting a diploma!
I fucking love my mentor.5 -
up at 11:30pm finishing some work when fire alarm goes off.... waited to see if my tests passed before leaving3

I took a civil service exam October last year, the list of passers where posted in the government website last December. My name wasn't on the list. I was heart broken. :'(
I wasn't able to apply for the job I wanted. I thought that I'm so stupid I can't even pass an exam.
I was depressed for almost a month.
Then yesterday, a friend of mine was searching google since I refuse to tell her my middle name.
Suddenly she exclaimed, wow! you're a civil service exam passer!
I was shocked beyond belief!
I checked the website, my name is still not there. HAHA. (deep inside it hurts)
I cursed my friend for trolling me but she swear that it's true. She sent me the link and BOOM! my name is on the list of APRIL passers!
WHAT THE HECK???
i just verified through phone that I actually passed and that it was an error on their website that included me on the wrong list. I don't know whether to be angry or pleased. lol XDundefined error404 name not found oops it's there...wrong error. i passed oh my gosh after 6 months good news8 -
Law's passed in France making it illegal for your boss to send you mails after work hours! So many devs there can now be in peace! If only this was implemented everywhere :/

"Your XML is malformed by these strange tags CDATA. I've cleaned it up ;)"

My mom passed away in 2014. Were it not for the pain she was in all her life, I’d love to have her back and I’d gladly provide all the computer help she’d need.1

It has happened again. The EU has passed article 11 and 13 which has now doomed the internet for all EU Citizens.
After GDPR passed, tons of people became more aware that the EU parliament has that much control over everyday life things. Thus there was much more scrutiny over what else they may pass.
Despite expert testimony on why the articles are bad, they rejected all amendments and passed it as is.
It is no longer worth it to serve EU customers. I’m sorry guys, but I’m out.

Godammit Homebrew.
It's bad enough having to develop C on a Mac, now Homebrew is refusing to let me install a package that needs root privilege. Support simply says "no package needs root privileges" and "run as an admin". BITCH, THIS PACKAGE NEEDS IT.
So now I'm downloading homebrew source just to add a "--fuckingdoit" flag that skips their shitty "no sudo" rule.
Tooling should save me time, not WASTE it.1 -

Has anyone felt the astonishing effect that is writing a whole bunch of test classes, hitting run for the first time and they all pass.
I'm kinda sitting here staring at my screen in disbelief, either these tests all passed, or I've really missed something and they passed anyway, or it's just a lying piece of shit trying to question my own abilities... all are possible right now.
And no, they are not " assert(1,1) "rant i think it's lying to me tests classes first go all pass i'm a run these again to be sure i don't believe it4 -

I had no idea of how to implement the logic of a ticket. That's why I started with creating some unit tests that failed. Then I continued working until they all passed.
So it works now.
I have still no idea of how I implemented the logic.3 -

Why I don't use Stack Overflow 99% of the time:
Me: I'm not a ruby developer, but I have to write a small script in ruby. I ran into a problem where i'm getting behavior I don't expect. I have a method which expects an array, and when multiple items are passed into it from the command line parser, behaves appropriately, but when only one command line argument is passed, the method breaks because it was passed a single element, not an array of one element. Here's my code, how do I get my desired behavior?
Most highly voted answer: your problem is your passing it a single element and not an array
Question downvoted into oblivion. As if i'm a pleb for not immediately having a perfect grasp of dynamic typing because when I have the choice I stick with strong nominative typing.8 -
I was reading some google api docs and came across php function parse_str().
This function literally executes the passed string as php code.
Who the fuck in their right mind would even think of implementing it.
I knew php is widely hated language, but this thing is plain abomination.8 -
Wasted 2hrs changing the whole code, later realized I had passed the arguments to the function in wrong order 😑😣3

The company who said i passed the interview and got the job is not sending me email from hiring department to schedule interview. They said they gonna do it. But the recruiter told me they have a high demand of interviews so i guess they dont have time to reply to me back and hire me officially? Im still waiting its been a few days.
Or is this a slow sign of these shitfucks pulling back and will ghost me or reject me for no fucking reason even after telling me i passed and got the job but now they changed their minds for no reason?8 -

Trying to investigate further, I made a function to repeat the API request 5 times in a row. Everything passed. The run it again. Two failed. Again and everything passed.

I think the linux live CDs with games on it, that my dad had compiled for me, were one of my first exposures to computers.
I remember how if you passed some specific argument, it would talk to you in a pretty sci-fi female voice too.2 -
Just a strong feel and will to pursue it! As the time passed by it became stronger.
Even in the challenges, when you find fun and happiness and satisfaction of after achieving it... that's what proves constantly.. as if.... -
The hotel I'm staying at only has mini toilet paper that I have had to call for an embarrassing number of times yet they're tryna judge me for wanting pasta at 3 am???
Like, we've passed that stage. I feel no shame anymore!! -
I took a systems security class when I was in college and the exams were the most difficult ones that I had. We had to do two exams and I felt pretty stupid on both.
Passed the exams but they gave me some doubts about my skills. -
Perfect use of DI in .NET Core project.
> Passed logger object in UI project's controller class constructor.
> Then pass it to internal class.
> Then pass it to business project.
> Then pass it to another class and finally used logger in a method to log exceptions in try-catch1 -
Boss wanted our AES implemented to use an Initialization Vector. I changed the implementation to add an IV and all the tests passed on the first try!
I changed the implementation to fail just to make sure I wasn't getting false positives. -
When everything passed to the front end is in the form of a magic array... all values are grabbed using an arbitrary index...
-
So v4 came out just before I started prepping for v3 through my college and I was a little pissed at first but then I thought to myself, well shit, at least I passed 😂 NEXT 🦆4
-
Was so angry... Was all the day wondering why my rest method wasnt outputting a certain property (in null to be more precise)... When almost 5 hours has passed, I realized it was due the @JsonIgnore annotation... soooo angryyyyy jaja
-
This is a rant.
Sorry rant community...I haven't had so much time lately. Too much work to do, and you reminded me that it's passed quite a lot of time from the last login. And for you I meant the rant community developers!
I will be here more often in the future!1 -
hi guys, I applied for a job and I passed a coding test. Now they called me for interview tomorrow. It will be an 2 hour on-site assessment group assessment for them to see how I think and work. I am a fresh graduate. Any advice? Feeling bit nervous9
-
Another weird property of the devRant API:
For every POST request the url parameters need to be passed in the http body instead of in the URL, like this:
app=3&user_id=42
Wtf why?22 -
Swift is such a horrible language now that I am actually using it. You have protocols that don't behave like interfaces, classes that aren't objects, structs that aren't passed by reference. And stupid counterintuitive generic grammer. I feel scammed.1
-
To have passed my first 2 years in Software and Electronic Systems Engineering and have a good placement lined up for the 3rd year 😁
-
My first project is in production now, first day of night shift ;)
.
.
4 hrs passed.
Fuck! getting damn sleep. -
Weird frontend problem with a test that doesn't make any sense. Ask two frontend engineers and they're not sure what's going on. Rebased today and it passed. 🤷
MAGIC!4 -
Still waiting for an offer (a week has passed, still no news even though they told me I was good) and waiting the 9th for another job interview :(1
-
stupid teacher sucked. i passed the class but i felt like i didnt learn anything from him.. how do you guys learn a new lenguage? when making a program do you write it all in paper or just code away and figure it out?6
-
VBScript.
Hey look, this arg is declared as ByRef, but when you called that procedure you put it in parentheses, so it was passed by value! Yeah, makes perfect sense, and soooo easy to debug... -
More linux driver woes:
Driver is passed a file position and byte count when asked to read from a device. Sounds easy, right? FUCK no.
For reads, driver is passed struct `filp` with field `f_pos`, a direct pointer to the same struct field, int `count` as a number of bytes to read, and `buf` to return those bytes with. Problem is, requesting, say, 256 bytes from location 10000000h will give the driver `filp->f_pos = 0`, `f_pos = 256`, and `count = 0`. I don't know how to fix this and there's NO help for this shit. None whatsoever.
This shit, right here, is why Linux drivers suck ass.4 -
Working with passed on spaghetti code.
Glaring at author's name.
Wherever you are.. I will find you.
And I will kill you. -

Want to go to my University from where I passed last year to take Placement interviews, but it seems chances are almost null..
I believe in miracles.. Tmr others are going.... Someone pull me in too..
At least I will be good enough for shadow interview...1 -
New project, make a simple change, a load of tests fail, stash changes to see if they ever passed, rerun tests: they pass ... rubbish must have been something i did. unstash changes, rerun tests to check the details: they pass ... walk away slowly
-
Index, currIndex and i are all -1.
The real index is a postfix on a string in another class passed through several layers of reflection and delegates.
Tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow will be better. Tommorow will be better.... -
[thinking] "Just a few little tweaks and I'm all set to meet the deadline. Oh, what's this? Not broken but I could probably improve that real quick."
[Several hours passed deadline]
"Oh God, what have I got myself into?"1 -
The moment when the company you applied to as Junior Java Developer emails back asking for a date for a phone interview and it's been 3 days passed the day you picked with them and still no call.. 🤔😥3
-
Wtf js...
How to check if the event that is passed to the buttion is fron this button and syio it from bobbling 🙈2 -
Lil' update: so I never went to linux class and I had to learn it within a few days for my exam and I passed hehe1
-
I accidentally removed an object file from the linker phase of a library we use, by messing with a variable in the Makefile. This meant that the library was completely unusable when loaded into a binary.
All of the tests in the library's build process still passed, though. -
Why is it that most people that reply to feedback/support forms of just about any web site in general are complete dimwits? If they are people, that is. In that case, congratulations! You've just passed the inverted Turing test!2
-
YES! YES! YEEEEES! FINALLY!
I've been trying to get some systems to run successfully on docker swarm. Now forget a regular swarm, there have issues just getting it to pass CI builds, and Finally, YES FINALLY it passed!!!!
I now need to pass my self on the back... -
- "You passed all the tests very well, we think you will be a big actor of our developement service. We propose you 28k€/y, and it's the best you could find on the market."
- "No, thank you."
1 week after, found for 38k€/y. -
I can not hold it today one of my teachers passed away because of blood cancer someone find a cure for this shit that's too much to take :(
-
I was a teenager when my father bought me my first computer desktop, Windows XP times, and days passed on doing whatever on it, both from software and hardware inspection\acknowledgement
-
Google's fastboot driver is not working since windows' got updated to build 2004. so much time passed (i guess 2 years) but google still don't fix their sick driver and I think they didn't even fucking noticed it. that's all sorry I just wanted type these useless words
-
Those times when something just won't work and you have no idea why, and how to fix it and hours or even days passed without any progress and you wonder if you even deserve to eat dinner...
-
When your redirect url passed as get parameter to 'secure' the login you pass bade64 envoded string with path, length and (salted) md5 hash ....
why God why you secure a redirect you do 302 to on success1 -
Finally a bachelor first class honours(irish title)
Why is this a rant?
Because i passed on my second attempt on my development project because i was a lazy piece of shit.
I guess i learned out of it.1 -
Just found out I passed the coding interview phase. Next step is a "live" (covid adapted) whiteboard interview.
I haven't had to do one of these before. Anyone have any advice on these?1 -
In a company currently for an interview, these bastards call people in batches and ignore the batches previously made... they just passed a sheet like an idiot to write names.... obviously people who came late were at the back.... so the ones who came late would go in early! 😑2
-
A new dev hire, just said that after a Windows update all her files, settings, are deleted. Thankfully it was still in recycle bin. I don't know who's at fault, but I had a fix to this problem.
Linux. Passed her the ubuntu installer USB key.6 -
Dear C++ / Java developers.
Please do not write Python, or do utilize helper libraries / pythonisms.
Not EVERYTHING has to be done by hand, it's not CS class anymore. Classes are fine too, not everything has to be passed as comma separated string. Python is proper Object-Oriented language, not scripting tool like Bash.4 -
Writing a x-platform cli tool in Go designed to be an infinite REPL until EOF if no arguments are passed. Code works great on Linux and Mac as-is but not on Windows. On Windows it only works at all if args are passed.
WHY.
And people wonder why I don't like Windows. It's a shame my userbase has so many tech-saavy Windows users. If not for them I'd cut that git branch off the repo in a heartbeat. -
Playing chase the stakeholder when trying to find the owner of a sharepoint page for authorising changes.
"Sorry that person doesn't work here anymore, ownership was passed to her line manager in Venezuela." -
I have passed the last 3 days trying to figure out how to allow website users to download an ios enterprise app with plist/ipa files and i can't still find a solution1
-
In regards to my last string of posts regarding react and Auth, I got it working the bearer token is being passed but now just getting XML errors every time I submit a form. All the data being passed is JSON. I've created a stackoverflow question https://stackoverflow.com/questions... as I'm getting nowhere and SO really isn't helping either. So if anyone wants to take a stab, go for it.11
-
Me: Code checked in, CI and tests passed, deployment kicked off. Huh maybe I won't have to stay late after all!
Production Web Server: -
I really dont think the project manager who passed out from IIM recently deserves to be paid so much than us devs. I don't know why but I feel it's not fair to pay someone 3 times that of my salary for just sending emails and having some meetings..2
-
Sooooo... I'm not sure I passed my first exam. I would've been able to answer all the questions correctly, if I'd had enough time.1
-
Apparently free chocolate if you're willing to part with your address (I can't personally verify it though, someone else passed it on.)
http://mongodbadventcalendar.splashthat.com/...2 -
Since I have learned Java I was taught that Java only passes by value. But my Uni Professor discusses that Java is passed by reference for object and string. I am really confused right now and need some advice.15
-
I shouldn't have to explain to you how to get value of a cookie and pass it in to a remote call (cookie not passed from generated clients) when you make 6 figure salaries + rsu3
-
So today I used a single int to pass on date, a number and a bool because I needed to display additional info ASAP, but a rebuild was out of the question so I built the int instead of a variable that was passed along and parsed it in JavaScript
-
Started at the age of 6 by doing simple calculator on zx-spectrum. Tho that's just a joke, not a professional experience. Somewhat serious project was started with PHP, without even knowing the language/theory/databases.... After that years have passed and now I can call myself: professional self-taught programmer.
-
I just can't believe react-component/form (rc-form) has no dev tools available
I really need to debug a strange behavior in one form as it seems the object of an InputEvent (I believe) is being passed along with the value (pic related)1 -
So as these people can see we can wait them out and we’re both gonna be skeletons collecting dust
Budge asshole
Sit at the goddamn table and budge on expectations or the deadline will be passed ! -
Watching CI builds run your tests and then deploy the passed version to thousands of users....oh, and the free hardware :)
-
I did not receive my stickers yet. More than 2 months passed. Tensed. I really want to put them on my Laptop.
-
Do you remember when Death Grips were popular, tons of memes and shit, but some time has passed and we all just… moved on?1
-
Felt like an idiot when realized that argument `back_populate` refers to the attribute of the class passed to `relationship`, not the stupid name of the table of any class, ugh
-
Silhouettes hide your pores,
not the chores for your work scores,
managers observe behind your eyes,
No one rants for the laughs,
where you now passed gas,
sum your growth of the past,
change the browser url paths,
or your boss will take your cash. -
God I am fucking sick of hearing people I know are full of shit talking about how they served their country or how they were always here or how they're the same age as I actually am 20 years younger or pretending that nothing ever changed and time never passed
Fucking bitches29 -
My question is for all participants of today's codevita. Will i get a interview call if i have submitted 2 solutions and public tests are passed, but in pvt test cases i am exceeding TLE and MLE.3
-
University course on Computer Systems.
I really really suck at bit manipulation and processor architecture, I tried learning it multiple times but always lost focus every time, was really difficult to stay invested and barely passed that course4 -
A mentor from my pre-tech days passed away. 😭 It’s so sad because it was unexpected and he was in good health. His peers are still into Facebook, so that’s how I was able to piece together what happened.
-
Argh
Help
If you know, a specific string is always going to be the same, and theres no way any other value could be passed to this statement. Is it still ok to use string.substring(0, string.IndexOf(&$&$))?
I feel dirty every time....1 -
I was passed someone else's homework which included describing what certain Bash commands do. I've a fair bit of experience and I can't imagine why this one would be useful, can you think of any use for it?
(find -type d) | grep public | tr './p' ' '6 -
Just woke up and this is the only phrase that I can remember.
Here it goes.
Tom stands for Tom Holland the airport hero that I passed by at the age 7.1 -
How do people check code quality during interview process online? I believe I write a very good one after 9years+ experience but never got passed...
-
So this https://devrant.com/rants/7347385/...
Then today I was supposed to merge code written by some who left at the end last month. QA just passed it now. Yea that branch is nowhere to be found -
The three body problem in work place: having 3 directors, each in charge of different area. It is a real chaos when there is a proposal need to be passed by all three.
