Four years ago (16yo) I learned about a software development company in my city and Ive been wanting to.work for them ever since, at first I couldnt because I need half college credits, after because I landed a way more comprehensive job, but now I start on monday. If you divide an integer with two over and over again, you will get closer and closer to 0, but you will never reach it.

Kind of the same feeling as watching your rant gain more and more ++'s, but never hitting that magical 300.

Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.

I started my journey one year back when i had no knowledge of any programming language except basics of C.

I got Clean Code for Christmas, it is such a good book. I can't recommend it more.

Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.

When somebody else in the office steals your rant, puts it up on devRant and gets more +1's than anybody else on devRant.

When someone suggests the topic, you should not actually reply with a rant you'd post in that topic.

Keep the content and post it when the topic gets used.

If you move rant feed to "Recent" and saw a bunch of rant u already read but you keep scrolling down hoping to see new rant but u fail cause rant policy keep people from posting new rant for 2 hour and not many new rant has been post.
This is a nice feature. It make u self aware that "crap, maybe too much time on devRant". Even if you addict to devRant but by this policy -> It force you to really close its app and checking it on another free time. (more healthy than another social media I guess 😂)

- Links cannot be opened
- profiles can not be viewed
- double tapping a rant opens the rant twice (tapping five times opens it 5 times) instead of voting it up.
- once in a while an opened rant shows up again under all the comments (with all comments as well). When this happens its exactly the ammount of comments.

!rant is a logic operator, right? As in NOT rant. So why do I so often see them on actual rants?
And for that matter, who cares? If there's a [Read More] tag, you'll click if you want, regardless.
Why is this a thing?

I explained last week in great detail to a new team member of a dev team (yeah hire or fire part 2) why it is an extremely bad idea to do proactive error handling somewhere down in the stack...

Example
Controller -> Business/Application Logic -> Infrastructure Layer

(shortened)

Now in the infrastructure layer we have a cache that caches an http rest call to another service.

One should not implement retry or some other proactive error handling down in the cache / infra stack, instead propagate the error to the upper layer(s) like application / business logic.
Let them decide what's the course of action, so ...
1) no error is swallowed
2) no unintended side effects like latency spikes / hickups due to retries or similar techniques happens
3) one can actually understand what the services do - behaviour should either be configured explicitly or passed down as a programmed choice from the upper layer... Not randomly implemented in some services.

The explanation was long and I thought ... Well let's call the recruit like the Gremlin he is... Gizmo got the message.

Today Gizmo presented a new solution.

The solution was to log and swallow all exceptions and just return null everywhere.

After 2 hours of the worst exam I had in years I'm finally done with my education and I can join the workforce. Finally some money and even more responsibility. And actual fucking work.

When I got the new remote dev job, there was no laptop purchase involved. We were down a computer at home when a desktop died and there was a lot of sharing going on with only one laptop. So we spent more than we planned to for Christmas and bought a replacement for the dead desktop so I could have more use of one for my job.

Yesterday my new boss says "Oh, we should get you a new laptop. Here's some money."

Oh well, at least this way there is more to go around!

Recently I bought a Moto Z2 Play, and it really it's an amazing phone, it includes the battery mod, and given than with my average usage, it lasts for me for day and a half, I'm more than happy :D
