Worst dev advice?
My first manager said, "You're young and single. You don't have a family. You should spend all of your waking hours on work."
Me thinking, "I understand the importance of extra effort the first few years but I do have a life. One that I intend to enjoy."15 -
Wrote the code
Ctrl+s
Ctrl+s again just in case
The page doesnt work
Ctrl+s again cause maybe it missed it on the first few tries14 -
Hello world, this is my first rant :)
Today at work, this was on the whiteboard.
Little "war" between the iOS pole and the PHP pole :D (Obviously PHP is better)19 -
Not a rant! 😁
For the first time in 21 years, ya girl landed herself a job!
It's a part-time paid internship to work at the IT help-desk for a company. Not hugely glamorous, but for the first job in my whole life, I am pretty excited & happy 😊
And as an extra bonus, my partner got the job too!! Yay :)9 -
"Only stay late at work when it makes sense to, otherwise always leave on time. There's always going to be work left, no matter how much you get done in one day."
Best advice ever.
Edit: I have to say it was during my first week in my first recent grad job.2 -
Yesterday: "This fucking logic makes no sense. I can't work this shit out!"
Today (first look at the problem): "Oh... I think if I do this and this... Yeap, that'd work"
I love fresh brain thoughts in the morning.8 -

Everyone in the class on the first day of college "I like programming, Java, C,C++". They don't even know that JavaScript and Java are different. Now I have to work with them on projects for 2 years. 😭

First few days as a professional software engineer (c# .net) have gone decent. Made my first bigger commit today started working on a small new feature that requires more work.
CoWorkers are really nice, boss is cool, super chill over all. #feelsgood6 -
Made up my mind to quit my new job yesterday. Im constantly bored. Either I have no work assigned no matter how much I ask for more, or I get handed work where the solution is already identified.
Obviously gonna find a new job first, wish me luck!8 -

I got my first job as a full stack dev when someone saw my web project on github.
It was my first ever web project and don't know if I'm actually ready to work.7 -
Best: My first app for Windows 10, "devRant unofficial".
Worst: A website for a client using Facebook APIs which don't want to work properly.4 -
Well , working in a start up is fun at first but when work piles up and revisions always happens you know your in a tight spot.10

After 12 years of having programming as a hobby and getting more than proficient in doing sysadmin work and fullstack development - I finally got my first job interview and test-case!4

Nice, I just removed my dpkg folder instead of dpkg/lock. Today is the first and only day for this week I can sit at my desk to work and this is first thing I did. And then I whine that I'm stressed and couldn't finish my tasks.

On your first day of work, when you're being shown around, the employer always says, "We encourage our employees to think outside the box".
This statement usually coincides with them showing you your cubicle.2 -
Just now, I managed to compile my first linux kernel for my laptop on the first try :D

Also, Nvidia is still going strong on my laptop, no problems whatsoever :)6 -
First (working) attempts at writing a proxy that rewrites live requests from the devrant app, right now it only rewrites all notifications to be unread
Though the first attempt that finally works is built with mitmproxy and it's add-on scripting, plan is to get that stuff work with e.g. goproxy instead37 -
Note to self: if you work on a logo concept that you know it won't work and it's hard to implement/loses meaning in monocolor, don't show it to your client as part of the first round of concepts.

A couple of months, 0$
It was a school project where I had to make a website for a company. I asked for a small amount of money for the website(100 euro). They accepted my offer but when it was time to sell the website, the company was sold to someone else. Unfortunately, they didn't want to pay for the website. They didn't even bother looking at the website(They are probably using Wix right now though).
Sorry if my English is crap :)2 -

Unpopular opinion:
I currently work remotely, but as it's my first job I would love to work locally with other devs in a room... Motivating can be quite hard sometimes when you're alone.

I was really surprised how much hardcore work there is on freelancer.com. At first I asked myself what hardcore coding would look like. Then I realized... 😥 Only females wanted.7

TFW your graphics ASM code works on the first try.
Yes, it just happened to me, and it's a relatively annoying rectangle drawing routine.
Writing complicated ASM code and making it work on the first try is definitely a new thing to me, I feel so powerful! >:D4 -

I need to stop finishing my sprints work within the first 3-4 days of the sprint.
I get so excited to get work that I loose my sense of time and space so I finish it all in one go...
Now I’m gonna be bored again for 2-3 weeks 😫8 -
Hello everyone!
This is a kinda follow up to my previous rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/1442655/...
So, it’s been a week since I started the internship. I am kinda lost to be honest.
The first day was awesome, but I have been going downhill since then. I make so stupid mistakes and it seems like I always think different than my mentor/employer (me making mistakes). Then he corrects me and I have to rewrite the code which I had to spend hours to think and get working. 😕😕
As @RantSomeWhere said, the guy is actually nice and still appreciates me and helps me all the time. I am really thankful for that. 🙂
As @plant99 said, I do have to be working a lot to try and meet the tasks that I am given. The employer does tell me to not over work but I still do if I have to, to get the thing done. I don’t feel nice if I don’t finish the work. So I do spend up to 12 hours (not continuously) on it at times. 😅
The code base… oh my god!! It is so bad (to me). Don’t get me wrong, we use the linting and auto formatting tools, but I can’t get over the 2 space tabs in C++ code. It makes me feel like I am not looking at code but at paragraphs of mumbo jumbo stuff. 😭😭
Oh and yes, it is confirmed. I HATE FRONTEND WORK! Especially when languages like JS and C++ are used in combination and interact with each other. 😨😨😱😱
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate JS or frontend, but I hate doing it myself. So not my cup of tea. Kudos to those who actually do it! 😎👏🏻🎊
Overall, I guess, it is going decently. I feel so scared at times, consumed by the fear, that my code will be wrong and he’ll be disappointed in me. Yea I know that I shouldn’t be upset with how others feel. But it does make me sad when I disappoint my mentor (who is still rooting for me). 🙁
I am hoping to get better over time. This is definitely a great experience for me because my code has never been judged before. I have always been the “king of code” in my college/social circle. 🤭🤭
Honestly, this is actually humbling. I guess I definitely needed this 😅😅. And as they say, you don’t improve by being the top. You improve by leaping forward, ending up at the bottom of the heap of the next level, and growing up from there. 😅
Oh and I also realized - remunerative benefits are DEFINITELY motivating 😂😂😂😂
And the 5 days work also definitely makes me MUCH more excited for the weekends 😆😆😂😂
Thanks everyone for cheering, motivating, and giving me advise.
@oudalally I definitely found your advise quite helpful 😁😁😊😊
PS: ooh this my biggest rant/story yet! Yiiipppeeeeeee 😁😁😊😊7 -

I'm about to take my first real vacation in about a year. One of the things I'm most looking forward to? Time to work on personal projects.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME?1 -
My first rant :)
It's only 2 months I work as a developer, and i get so frustrated when at meetings my boss doesn't consider me or doesn't ask me about my work, and instead he asks others about things I am doing..2 -
This is my first rant! I feel this every time I flag each function on my code looking for my mistake and still doesn't work:3
-
I've never coded (for work) on vacation. I just turn off my work laptop and my work phone. So I can spend the first week of back to work for going through my email & messages.
I'm not irreplaceable and I work with competent people. (At least that's my goal at work.) -
Looking for some advice....
So I'm a web dev that works remotely full time from home which I love, I'm expecting my first child in late march which is really exciting but I'm starting to think about how it's all going to work with the missus home for at least 12 months and of course a baby that (without sounding horrible) is going to be a big distraction to me when I'm trying to work.
So just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there in a similar position or that has gone through the same thing and how you did it? Is there any advice you can give me?
Appreciate any thoughts.13 -
Best: Writing my first bash script, understanding Object Oriented programming
Worst: Dealing with team members who claim to have work experience but in reality have no clue why they are doing what they are doing -
One week into my new job as a junior mobile developer I receive my stickers from devrant (for posts I made while still a project manager and self-studying to get where I am now) - on the same day I did my first 12hr workday to complete work for my first sprint.1

#10
After I did some work on this nightmare codebase, the client kept switching goals. He Changed the task a few times, so I always told him that he will have to pay for all changes.
After a time he requested another change, so I stated that he has to pay the first invoice I sent him first. He started bitching around, that I didn't complete the work yet and so on. I saw where this was going. He didn't wanted to pay me, so I cancelled the work for this bitch.
😤

First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁
I'm more than proud of myself. 🙂
P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -
My first job seems nice enough to stay.
Teammates are nice, work schedule is flexible, and free meals.
I think I am super lucky.6 -
Best: I got my first job as Android dev
Worst: Long commute everyday (2.5 hours from home to work)2 -
Didn't realize buttons will submit the first form on a page, coded without this assumption, went into production without anyone noticing. Cost the client about 8 grand in work that had to be redone.1

Just started my first "management" role after 12 years as a developer, first thing I learnt is its just like my last role only I don't have to do any of the hard work.
Worried they'll figure out I'm doing almost nothing soon, any tips? Should I just start scheduling meetings to discuss meetings?4 -
First day of work, the guy says that I must arrive until 9am, he isn't here, now I'm sitting waiting for him (it's 9:45)4

fucked up my hand, spent entire work coding like on a typewriter.
for those who want to know, dropped coffee dripper on my hand, full of hot water. it was a first degree burn thankfully, water wasn't that hot. hurt like hell at first, but it's much better already. by monday I'll be ready to be fully exploited for my work again 👍16 -
First day back at work, can't remember why my program wasn't working or what the fugg I was doing before I went on leave3
-
a lot of devs just don't have the first clue of what they are doing
they haven't put in the work
they'll blame absolutely everything else (language, framework, pattern, etc.) instead of actually putting in the work and making it easier for themselves
sad9 -
Today is the first day of the last year of my bachelor's degree.
It's also the first day of work for one of my closest friends.
I wish him the best for this new adventure.
Good luck my friend and have a nice day !1 -
First week in a new job left me wanting to work there more.
No mails from old place. Strange. I've left them just as two completely green guys were to come for the first time.
Well, not my problem.1 -

Ability to ask the right question the first time.
Sometimes the hardest part of development work is first understanding the question that’s needed.. the answer isn’t typically hard to formulate from there. -

Client : you are hired as a developer.
Me : we need more developers as there's more work and less time.
Client : Ok, here's another dev

ON THE DAY OF DEMO :
Me : Here's the demo.
Client: it's incomplete, where's more work?
Me: that's the part of 2nd dev you hired before
Client : I don't care, I fucking need a work!
Me inside: (Why the fuck would the first dev becomes a task/team manager just because is the first one to join the project! Arrrgh!!! Hire a fucking scrum master to manage your fucking tasks/team, am just a fucking dev! )6 -
My first dev project outside of school work was an android application I made for my then-girlfriend to track time between contractions and count kicks during her pregnancy. It was horrifically ugly but it was my first android app and it worked!10

Every work experience so far.
The first one... Internship abroad, very messy codebase, almost no code review.
At the end I was so tired I started watching movies during worktime. -

My first real software job is my current one. Nothing to rant about: great colleagues, lot of challenging work. Plus I get to work remotely.2 -
1) Let me work with devs without me having to explain fundamentals of programming
2) Stop devs from copy pasting code from StackOverflow or any other project without actually understanding what it does
3) Get devs to actually read and understand project documentation FIRST before jumping into any programming work1 -

wow. I, do, not, want, to work today at all.
I don't think I've ever felt this strongly about first day back to work before.
Guess the previous job was actually interesting :(
I even went to the office on NYD just to do some heads down coding. (but ended up doodling on everyone's empty whiteboards)5 -
As I mentioned in previous rants
The company that I work for is very loud and noisy, making it really hard to code.
First day in new office, bigger space in the same building....PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE AND LOUDNESS

Pretty sure that the code doesn't work on the first run, so I thought why not debug it now? but then when am I actually gonna run it...

First day at work and after seeing the codebase and how everyone's talking about the code, I'm pretty sure I don't have imposter syndrome, I'm just that bad...13

Yeah and then that moment in refactoring where main() gets under 700 lines and I don't know whether what I'm feeling is joy or despair. Gaaaahhhh!
At least I have also written automatic tests so that I can see when something breaks.2 -

I got my first technical phone interview from a company I'd actually really want to work with for a full stack (mostly frontend) react node web app developer job. Any tips or stories of your first technical phone interview with a company you cared about?! I think it will really help me. Thanks! 😅4

Next month I am going to work as a tester(1rst work in IT), have no expiriance at all.
I would like to prepare, but what should I prepare for, what should I learn/repeat/exersice?
Thx12 -
How to remain calm when you're asked about an "update" of the work, which never was assigned to you in the first place?6
-
!rant.
Just got my first on site job! Fucking tired of working remotely. Time to work without it getting boring/lonely.5 -
Ah, now that I'm done spending my first hour of the day typing a long decline to a request for me to work overtime, I can finally get back to work.
-
I'd love to work for NASA or Space X and be one of the first to colonize mars. Should that not work out, I also really want to work for Google and do some freelance work on the side maybe. And all of that is only true if by then I haven't created the next big tech thing.
-
Tonight was my first experience with bazel.
It seems cool, but I still haven't gotten anything to work yet and it's been about 4 hours.
It hasn't helped that it doesn't work too well on Windows.1 -
Now let me just throw away most of this pre-work documentation from the PMs and do it right the first time.

## Reasonable answers needed ##
If you always work free and forced overtime, and you didn't get any salary raise fir a while. and then you asked to learn and work with new language and framework you didn't work with it before, you would prove yourself and learn it or you would ask for a raise first (or you simply you won't work do it)?
Context: fucked up market, no other job founded. and father.12 -
Client deescalation needed and intervention by company leader...
Client refuses to test - too much work they say.
Client wants a lot of changes - but cannot define what.
But most frustrating... Even as we tried to with all patience that was left to find out what they were doing aka how they work, what work flows, documents and so on were involved, they basically started a team discussion and seemed to work all differently...
And the project should be a complete sale and warehouse solution, suited and written for their needs.
Really? How can a company like this work?
It's not the first time I've dealt with hard projects or 'weird' customers, but really the first time I have no fucking clue what I should do.
Can someone please summon Ctulhu?3 -
Don't know why but I prefer to work/code on linux. It pissed me off when we had to work on windows on java and C labs on uni. On first data bases lab we got linux machines and the first thing we did was starting windows VMs...
-
Get to work before everyone is there to work a while without interruption.
Be the first there... to fix the worst problem of the year which appears this night. What a nightmare.
But it's done and fixed I'm happy ....
Half day is over now come to the real work. Oh wait Chef want to know what happens.
Day is over.
Best day of the Year!2 -
Worst part of having a stupid team lead is that you first have to explain the work twice and then start the implementation.. which makes the 15 minutes work as 40 minutes.2
-
Repeat yourself, but don’t repeat other people’s hard work. Repeat yourself: duplicate to find the right abstraction first, then deduplicate to implement it. -- tef

Finished my first freelance web project today. Spent 11 hours coding it. Another 10 hours trying to get it to work on the browser.
-
I was busy with making an end assignment, and one part just didnt work, it wasnt showing properties or gearslots of the first ninja

My first job was partially support oriented. Had to work in shifts and just close issue tickets. Learnt Python, automated shit, only to quit it later for a better job :)
-
Finding it difficult to work out whether I should take the plunge and try to make the idea I have.... must overcome confidence first...5
-
When the Javascript you're working on works fine the first few times; then inexplicably starts throwing an error and breaking on one box while continuing to work on another....
-
This was the first intense work day for month, seems like people is coming back from vacation now.
I worked 4 hours straight.2 -
The first time was the time my father bought a pc for his work,I was around 5,I didn't know anything about computers back then,I just wanted to change things and see what happens! The first time I actually understood what devs do was the first year of high school when I started to learn C++ :))
-
I have a coding block. I blame school. I'm on break for 2 weeks. The first week just finished. I try to work on my personal projects and I just lose interest. I have the motivation and stuff but when I try to work on them, the feeling just goes away.

Fuck entity framework code first! It's a pain in the ass making relationships work with code first! 😑😑6

Somehow I made that work at the first attempt without checking anything before. Still can't believe it.
To be fair: I forgot typecasting once in the 19 lines before that.
Has anyone suggestions for improvement?5 -
I had my first client meeting today.
Now I understand the pain of dealing with clients rather than doing work.
I don't relish the fact I had to stay an extra 2 hours either. -
Going soon to work my first day of my first internship, and eager to find out what work in CS actually looks like 😃
-
Starting my first dev job next week (except for freelance work) and I'm crazy nervous that I'm going to make some huge mistake and look really stupid. Did anyone else have these fears before their first dev job and, if so, how'd you stay at least a little confident?4
-
Currently waiting to get paid for a freelance job I took over the summer. First time making money off of my work and I couldn't be more excited.

Last week of my fixed term contract, it was my first work experience, and it was related to my studies, it's awesome to have a work which is also a hobby. Now I'm returning to School!

I used to work in the culture and entertainment field. Some work days during festivals and tours were long. It wasn’t uncommon for me to work 24h+ straight, but I think the longest uninterrupted work session was during the first iteration of a big music festival, where I ended up doing a 53h (to my recollection) day, then taking a 3h nap, and continuing for another several hours. Dev work is so much easier comparatively in that regard - and the money’s better.

fucking caffeine telling my brain that it doesn't work in its absence !
"this will require a rewrite you really don't want to do..."
first thought is coffee.2 -
First day back at work, lunch time now. So far I've been to one meeting and done no work. I can't get on to the vpn. We get OTP for the vpn via sms. Sms is taking so long to come through that it always expired by the time I get it

Used XSLT for the first time at work. It seems like it can be a pretty powerful tool in the right situation, but I'm not too happy that I have to use it in the first place.2

What advice you'd give me if I've no industry work experience and already in process of making my first start up into a business? Got my first paying customer and many more in process6

Network Support is the worst place to work in especially when you done all your work in the first hour. Also, when managers are pain in the ass.
Might as well call it a call centre rather than Service Desk -
Ok so i Don't know spring and i have been asked to work on spring batch. So should i start learning directly from batch or should i go with spring first and then goto spring batch?

I was just made to switch projects and was told to work on a feature I have zero previous knowledge about. I think this is the first time I am googling about something and not sure which link to click first. I have so much information in my mind these days from previous project that I just can't take any new information.

Being lazy sometimes and writing type definitions after I’m done developing something rather than before (hence wasting time as doing that work is meant to help with the development process in the first place...)

Got a gig as a consultant (started Monday). Got my first engagement starting next Thursday. First time I've been excited about my work in a long time. Hope it stays that way!! -
Hi,
I would like to ask please
If you were given a project to work on and it has some business rules. How do you work with it?
The reason I am asking this is because I created an application in C#
I created an application in two different ways.
The first one worked correctly
But the second one I followed the business rules as specified in order
same project but I didn't get same results.
Is the order on how / what to code first is important?
If yes, how will I know which part has to be coded first.
Thank you.3 -
First day on the job as a front end developer and all he got for me "is make it work"....thanks for the people talk you a2s

I think the first time I ever felt like a wizard because of dev work was when I discovered creative coding and all the fun you can have with it.
