Dad is also a dev/architect. Mom barely knows how facebook works. So essentially she thinks I'm either playing games or working hard. Dad knows I'm just playing games.3

Client: the platform isn't sending emails
Dev: I'll look into it
(Finds all emails are being sent without issue)
Client: I just tested and I'm not receiving emails. This is obviously a site wide bug and I'm upping the priority to "Critical". I'm also getting everyone over here involved.
(Looks into clients account)
Dev: you didn't turn the setting on to allow emails to be sent to you.
Client: this is still a site wide bug that is affecting everyone.
(Provides screenshots showing emails are being sent and opened. Client closes ticket and doesn't respond anymore)11 -
the advantage of dating a non-dev: she thinks I'm incredibly smart when I describe what I'm working on, when in reality I have no clue what I'm doing 🙃12

Knocked over a beer bottle with my hand and caught it mid-flight.
Felt like a fucking ninja.
No clue why I'm sharing this but goddamn that was good.3 -
At a party.
A: So, what do you do for a living?
Me: I'm a dev-
A: So you can like... hack things? Can you hack my insta?

Hello everybody! I'm probably not supposed to be ranting here becuase I'm not a dev but I started my journey today towards Android by spending a whole day successfully making a Java program and just wanted to share my free and satisfied feeling with you all!15

Every time I hear a developer say "works for me", I'm gonna hide a service of mine that they use behind the VPN.
Dev: "oy mate, this server is down"
Me (with VPN connection): "sorry mate, works for me"
Dev: "but here, check this out, it's down!!"
Me: "mate, check your network connection. You must have a shitty network connection."
Dev: -_-
Me: "Maybe shitty hardware? Driver issues on your network card? 🤭"
Because you know, we sysadmins can do that too 😉26 -
Translating things:
ME: "Hey dev, can you send me a xml file of strings to translate so you can impleme..."
DEV: "yea yea tomorrow"
He sent a .docx file.

A story of the backend dev. from our client:
"I used !important once now I'm not allowed to do frontend anymore :("17 -
I'm a Python dev, yet 99% of my work over last 3 weeks has been JS. How do js devs not sit in the corner of a room crying at the end of a day?28
-
As a backend dev, I have this habit of just dropping script & style tags all over the place, and using inline style attributes on divs.
Then when I'm done I just link the code to a frontend dev, they'll hate it so much it will be cleaned up within minutes.13 -
Me telling a senior dev on how to install a proprietary software:
Me: Sir, the instructions are in the readme.txt
Senior: I'm supposed to read the readme?!3 -
GUYS I GOT MY FIRST JOB, I'M SO FUCKING PROUD OF MYSELF (not a dev job, but I'm still in high school so anything's good enough for me)15

My biggest personal challenge as a dev? The one friend that keeps yelling at me to learn vim when I'm doing just fine with VSCode.11
-
Ummm ..
I'm a PHP dev.
I still accept WordPress Websites.
I usually use bootstrap but haven't tried 4.0 yet.
I occasionally touch jQuery.
:3 still wanna hear my disappointment stories?7 -
I'm a backend dev, but i often have to imagine and create the design since there's no designer at my office 😵😱
So far, i hate him!(me)4 -
My setup at work as a juniour dev. Got a month ago a 3rd monitor (the left), because I'm working on some backend services and had to test them with a touchscreen. Now only the frontend dev and I have 3 monitors in the whole company 😁6

I always look at this app but never post anything because of lack of amazing Dev things happening to me. Still one of my favourite apps.8

Me on my laptop. My flatmate is next to me. I'm trying to create a live CD.

Flatmate: /dev/sda.

Boss(Engineer Degree): Did you find any solution?
Dev: Option A is not possible, so i'm analyzing Option B.
Boss:(Sends me the first Google search result of Option B)
My god! I'm in presence of an illuminati! You save my day.2 -
My dad's a silicone guy, my little brother is a java-dev, my mom works for the NHS.
I'm a web and mobile dev.
So... My dad and little bro think I do WordPress and my mom thinks she should earn more than me.
In her defence I'm an NHS patient and I also think her and anyone else in the health industry should earn more than me.8 -
(Monday)
Me: I'm gonna be gone the next few days and you take care of this? I have these notes if you have questions.
Dev: Sure.
(Friday)
Me: Did you take care of it?
Dev: I had a question.
Me: Okay, did you check the notes.
Dev: They didn't address my question. (Proceeds to ask question)
Me: Let me show you my notes where I answered it.
Dev: Oh sorry.....3 -
Officially resigned this morning from my helpdesk position.
in two weeks I officially begin my career as a junior dev. I'm on cloud 9 and yet still don't believe it.7 -
In the midst of a debate / discussion with a dev-friend ...

Him: I don't discuss. I explain why I'm right.

How many guys have experienced this?
Heard this from a supposed Linux user
Other dev: I have been using Linux for 3 years I'm really good at it.
Then sees me use "cd" and "mv" commands
Other dev: wow that's some complex stuff
Me: 😂😂😂

HOLD THE FUCK ON!
Since when has devrant had a swag store?!
Never knew it existed untill like an hour ago, guess I'm loading up on dev ducks on pay day!5 -
I'm pretty young for a dev and I am still learning as one but I find it sad how nobody at my middle school knows anything about code. But I'm glad I got this app because I get to see what devs are up to 😃 blessdd12

~ 10yrs ago, Dad: I'm a dev, your mom's a dev. I paid for you to go-to business school... But you still became a dev. And your brother also wants to be a dev
Now after me and bro moved back with then bc of COVID. The house is basically WeWork on weekdays.
Good thing we're all devs so can with remotely.9 -
I have an interview with one of the big 4 in 2 weeks.
The post is for a java dev, they contacted me even though I'm a PHP dev.
I know the interview questions will be in java... What do I do??? :-(
I worked with java for the last time 2 years ago...22 -
I'm done with dumb girls😠 ! seriously I need a geek girl in my life to understand what I talk or what I share .... A dev girl right now would be awesome ..😃13

When your fellow dev insists on leaving no space between his CSS selector and the curly bracket.
I'm sure he does it just because he knows it winds me up.
I'm not so sure he knows I just run a beautifier on his files to fix it.4 -
Just received a support request that the lift is broken and requesting I fix it... Their reasoning? It has buttons and lights up (I'm dev/IT at small company)4
-
I'm so scared of the people on stackoverflow that my method for debugging a problem is to write up a question by which time I'm shocked into finding a solution. I'm just too scared of being ridiculed by some narcissistic dev (who obviously never makes any mistakes, ever) or, heaven forbid, having my question down voted and closed.5

(Micro)Manager: Just a reminder you have a meeting at 4:30 today. (note that micromanager has nothing to do with this meeting)

After 'Dev' deployed a service using Azure ServiceBus, a particular queue/client was receiving errors.
Dev: "Looking at the logs, client is getting faulted."
Me: 'What is the error being logged?'
Dev: 'Client is faulted'
Me: 'No, that is our error when the client is either unable to connect or there is an exception in the middle of sending a message. What is the exception from Azure?'
Dev: 'Client is faulted. That's it. I'm going to have to re-engineer the code to implement a retry policy.'
<OK, I smell someone cooking up some solution finding, so I dig into the logs a little further>
Me: "Looks like an invalid connection string. The actual exception being thrown and logged is from the Azure client connection string builder. The value cannot be null."
Dev: "No, I'm looking right at the connection string in the config. Looks fine."
Me: "Looks correct on your machine, but what is actually being deployed to the server?"
<I could tell he was getting agitated>
<Dev clicks around, about 10 min. later>
Dev: "Aha!..I found it. The connection string in the config on the main branch is wrong, in fact, the entry is missing."
<dev fixes, re-deploys, life is good, I document the error and the root cause>
Boss: "Great job Dev."
*sigh* ..go teamwork?3 -
As a primarily back end dev, I'm not very good at design. So i wrote a Ruby script to download free html + css templates... all 3600+ of them 😐3

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!
HOW CAN SOMEONE BE A FREELANCER/WEB DEV AND TYPE SO FUCKING SLOW AND HAVE TROUBLE WITH FUCKING LETTERS ALL THE TIME?!
I'm gonna push this mother fucker so hard that he will learn not to "lie" in an interview never again and become a fucking dev.5 -
My family thinks than I can do Uber (eats), Facebook and WhatsApp but better. And than I'm lazy because I don't build those "obvious" business opportunities.
BTW I'm mostly web dev, sometimes mobile dev on a small company.4 -
So you're gonna underpay me when you know damn well I'm the best dev you've had in at least the last year? Guess who's gonna learn DVORAK on a QWERTY11

Dev blog writer: "I'm a polygot developer, check out my Github..."
Checks Github, only finds JS and 1 HTML repos...
Thanks for making me feel better about my employment chances mate!2 -
Creative dev compliments? Wow, that shows what type of person I am. I only know creative dev insults. Okay let me give it a go!
Wow, I'm gonna star that on GitHub!
Good work! I'm gonna put a shortcut to that right here on my desktop (in the same tone as "I'm gonna hang that on the fridge")
You're so meticulous that the unit tests are to make sure the computer works correctly, not your code.
If you were a web server, you'd always return 200/OK.
Your parents must have compiled you with -Ofast -
Dev: I think I just deleted data I shouldn't have. Can you do a rollback?
Me: No, I'm a DBA, I don't touch data. Did you commit?
Dev: Yes, I committed.
Me: Your data is gone.
Dev: But don't you guys do backups?
Me: We backup the Prod servers. We only back up Dev on request. Did you request a backup in Dev?
Dev: No.
Me: ...
Dev: The Testers are going to be pissed.1 -
I'm the only frontend dev for a website with over 30M UU a week. It's constantly evolving. I'm scared that even when I have an accident and end up in coma, they'll still hook me to a laptop to code.7

Management: foobar resigned. We need to have a dev who can work the android app project.
Me: You have to find a dev who can work with that stack.
Management: You!
Me: Me?
Management: Yes, You.
Me: Me? Why me? I'm a web dev.
Management: Starting tomorrow you will work for 2 projects.
Me: but..
Management: accept it or..
Me: Okay. -_-

Dev: *walks into therapy office*
Therapist: what's the problem?
Dev: I'm a developer in a retirement home
Therapist: MARTHA CALL 911!!!4 -
Me: soooo can you get this done by next week?
Other dev: well who knows what rabbit hole I'll fall down. There's no way to tell.
Me: can you just avoid falling down a rabbit hole? We have a deadline.
Other dev: oh ya there's no way to know for sure.
Me: ....... Can you please try harder
Other dev: I'm trying I can't.
Me: ................6 -
I'm a software developer. Last week I spent half a day teaching a "Senior Data Scientist" how to use git branches. I spent the other half a day teaching him how to use Jira. Now I'm being told that the dev team isn't raising enough Pull Requests. FML

I've been struggling for the past year with:
Dev work
Ops work
"Management" work
This last month I made a decision, I don't give a fuck anymore and just gonna do my dev work which is the one I'm paid to do.
Never been better. Its healthy whem you let all those fucks go away :)3 -
I'm going to teach web dev at a coding school in a few months. In the teaching plan, students have to learn git. But we are told explicitly to only teach using github desktop and not the command line because it puts students off.
I'm not sure how to feel about this12 -
Manager: Can you stay late as fuck today? One of our bitchiest vendors is gonna update their piece of crap and I'm pretty damn sure shit is gonna hit the fan
Dev (inner voice): no fucking way, I have kids to watch and chores to do!
Dev (outer voice): can't we just check everything in the morning?
Manager: No fucking way! If there is some fucking "challenge" when our "people" try to log onto their shit, I'm gonna look like a chump!
Let's talk silvers, I will sign on that bloody commie bullshit for your hours tonight.
Dev (outer voice): Fine. Until how late?
Dev (inner voice): Wait, I was supposed to do it without getting overtime bonus?5 -
!dev (or maybe dev? Idk)
I'm a strong starter but not a strong finisher. I have rarely ever enjoyed putting "final touches" on anything. This is why I would appreciate working with someone who's a strong finisher and is not a credit-thief. But in this day and age for some absurd reason one must be both a strong starter and a strong finisher. One should be a complete person. 🙄8 -
🎶 Simple Plan - I'm just a dev 🎶
I woke up it was 7
I waited 'til 11
To figure out that no one would call
I think there are a lot of specs
I just haven't received them yet
They are the only thing that I really need to know
Because I can't find them on stack overflow
And here it goes
I'm just a dev
And life is a nightmare
I'm just a dev
I know that it's not fair
Nobody cares 'cause I'm alone
And the world is
Having more fun than me
Tonight
And maybe when the projects dead
I'll finally go to bed
But I'm staring at these four lines again
I'll try to think about the last time
That they were working fine
These things have business rules that I don't know
And they're gonna leave me here to figure it out on my own
And here it goes
I'm just a dev
And life is a nightmare
I'm just a dev
I know that it's not fair
Nobody cares 'cause I'm alone
And the world is
Having more fun than me
Tonight5 -
Normally I'm both the dev and QA... Today I was the dev, QA and the user... Of course, I'm paid only as a dev... But I'm blamed as all three... Ffs I can't do this anymore 😞2

How easy is to get fired from a Dev job? 😛 I'm afraid of that happening every time I introduce a bug lol4 -
Interviewer: Yeah so we're hiring you as the person who would build out and own our client-facing web application and related stack.
Dev: Perfect, that's what I've been doing for the past 10 years, I'm your guy.
Interviewer: GREAT SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FORK AND EXEC ON A PROCESS ON A LINUX MACHINE!?!?!?!?
Dev: I don't... know immediately at this moment?
Dev: Sigh
Dev: I hate my life
Dev: Somebody please help me18 -
When I was 6 or 7 years old I said I'll work "at the company that makes diskettes" (for games).
I'm not a dev though - I'm a grad student. I hope my rants are still welcome here. -
Is it really possible to become a good dev with only sololearning ?
I'm a student that already destroy my dev teacher(bad school, no money) so I'm trying to improve myself, but i cannot see the result.. :(13 -
I'm a bit tired of dev and applying for a customer support job for half my current income. During interview I already got promoted to technical support. Even dev job was possible, but I'm done. I've seen the wheel reinvented too much. Also, the looks of software became more important than ever and that's not something I do.
But I'm very positive now. I know the company already, they're great! Super culture! Always hired the right people and me once before as a py dev6 -
I'm a junior dev and my seniors insist to use Hungarian Notation. Looking the code I found a variable called oAllProjects... This is a fucking array.12
-
Today in horror stories: setting up the local dev environment for a project I'm taking over creates changes and notifications in prod.
Oh and my local dev env is somehow receiving data from actual patients. I don't know how.9 -
*Senior Dev:* Ah yes, we need to put try-catch in every function to handle errors and Logger.Log() at the beginning.
*Me:* Is not better to define a global error handler and use the stacktrace instead of doing all that?
*Senior Dev*: ...
*Senior Dev*: Is a rule here, do what I'm telling you.3 -
I didn't... Some of y'all might argue I'm not even a proper dev.. and I'd agree..
I'm fixing bugz & implementing a thing or two.. but all within how project was done.. you give me a blank project, I'd probably spend days reading up on how to do it properly and still couldn't decide what sounds good to me.7 -
People! I'm attending to a hackathon for the first time (this country sucks)
Any advice?
I hope I can get dev friends, or even a dev gf (my whole life dream)11 -
I am that person who'll try to do everything (web dev, games, apps etc) in one programming language coz I'm too lazy to learn another language. Maybe it's because I've never had a real dev job before.5
-
Serious question, what's so great about using Macs for programming and dev work? Junior dev here and all my colleagues and superiors can't stand them.
Is there actually a technic benefit that I'm missing?59 -
Story time!
I moved from React Dev to fullstack like halve a year ago. Three months ago I became project lead and now I will start to become a team lead.
Holy shit I'm growing fast2 -
In two days, on 28 June, I'll know whether I'm going to enter the path of becoming a software dev or if I have to try again next year. Wish me luck fam.7
-
As a junior dev I'm really frustrated at work today. My boss wanted us to complete a project within 3 weeks. The project includes a multi-tenant hotel system that includes reservation, invoicing, advanced reports, housekeeping system and an API. I'm starting to feel something about myself, I have no progress. I'm so slow. I love what I'm doing but maybe this is too much.
ps. we're a team of 28 -
Woooooo! Someone ran a cleanup script that deleted all the RPM package our dev Oracle databases use. Glad I'm not that person.

NO, YOU ABSOLUTE DISGUSTING GREMLIN OF A JS HTTP CLIENT, I DON'T WANT YOU TO "JsOn.StRiNgiFy" MY PAYLOAD OR DOING ANY WEIRD SHIT
I NEED TO SEND THIS THING EXACTLY AS IT'S WRITTEN, STOP TRYING TO GUESS WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO I'M A DEV WITH SOME 7 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WRITING CODE, I'M SENDING A STRING CUZ I NEED TO SEND A STRING2 -
Hi everyone, I'm a dev and work with ADVPL here in Brazil, I always wanted see my gitlab changing while I'm working in a project and now finally I can see it!17

I'm a junior dev in a scrum team with two senior devs: one actual senior and one average dev that's just been around for a long time. At stand up meeting, that average senior lists helping me as one of his task Every Single Day. 9 out of 10 times when I ask him a question we end up asking the senior senior together.2
-
ah yes, i'm a VERY kinky Java dev
my favorite NSFW act is naming my java variables shorter than their data types11 -
It's so annoying when your colleague dev says: "It's just a 30minutes task, I'm sure you'll do it in lesser time" NO I CAN'T!!!
Did anyone else had this kinda situation? :/6 -
Starting to develop a phobia of asking for help from senior devs since I can now sense their face-palm whenever I open my mouth.
Maybe I'm not ready to work as a junior dev yet...9 -
Worst dev tech I have used must be Visual Studio in a virtual Windows machine.
I can't think of anything slower.
And also, I'm a Linux user so I just hate it.6 -
The whole office thinks I'm working on a serious dev. I'm just running dev rant APIs on cmd and scroling.Happy Friday!2
-
The day after I delivered a secure programming course to our junior devs.
Junior dev: I can't figure out what's happening when I generate this sql.
Me: what do you mean generating ... It should be a prepared statement..
Junior dev: no I'm just generating the strings from the form
Me: ... Let's try this again.... -
Filled a form where I had to put my name down as "Executive researcher" (just means that I'll be carrying the study) and now me feels disoriented and very confused. 😕
Heh.
But me is important. Me is executive something! Pehehehe.14 -
Started a new gig doing APIs and deployment pipelines. After a few weeks a new boss came on the scene and decided I'm now a web dev, and the API and pipelines are going to be scrapped, and replaced by something with less availability and scalability.
Anyone looking for a good back-end dev?
😵💫 -
I'm still a student, not dev yet.
Thanks for reminding me that I don't completely belong in here😂11 -
Broke down and asked the junior dev to help me hash out an issue. He's also struggling with it.
I'm not a retard after all... unless were both retards.1 -
My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.
I lost precious time into trying being the "good kid" for my family and support them in their time of need.
Now I'm considered old for a starter and getting a dev job becomes harder with each passing day.4 -
That's it. I'm inventing a new position :
"Dev support".
Why do people ask me "Hey, visual studio has a pop up saying I'm missing a .net4.6 framework. What should I do ?"
Or "Hey powershell says script execution is disabled, what should I do ?"
Google motherfucker, do you use it ?!4 -
I'm afraid to go outside today because it is sunny.
I am a dev and have no tan.
I think I'm a day walker...1 -
Question for the old timers: is it possible to work as a dev for the rest of your life and be happy?
.
.
.
Does it get any better or is dev burnout baked into the business model of every company?
The CEO flat out admitted it was exactly that where I'm at a few weeks ago 😞16 -
Sometimes I wonder if I actually want to be a dev forever. Problem is I'm too smart to do anything easier and too lazy to do anything harder
-
Dev friend: Happy in your job?
- Me: Kinda, don't see myself doing it for another 35 years tho.. :(
Dev friend: Go back to school, learn computer sciences and get a dev job. You'll love it.
So now I'm back in school, no regrets whatsoever. Without a doubt best advice.. :) -
I'm buried in projects that I never get time to work on. My boss took the week off, and I'm getting emails from users asking about adding more projects to the board. I'm a single dev at my company. Normally, I have enough patience to get through the day, but today my CIO decided it would be a good time tell my coworker to let me know that the company dumped a third party we used for tons of report automation, and that I need to get these reports hand rolled in house asap. When I sent him a message asking for any kind of details on what this would involve, I found out he left early for the day.
I'm already stressed and putting in extra hours (salaried, so no extra pay) and am having trouble meeting deadlines for projects as it is because I'm constantly pulled away from my dev work to do non-dev work.
I just landed this dev position six months ago and haven't had a chance to build my resume. I'm getting "OK" money considering this is my first full-time dev job. Should I be looking to get out? Suck it up and get the experience? I know we all have crazy expectations on us and frustrating PMs, but after chats with other devs, I get the feeling that my situation is beyond fucked.11 -

It's been over a year coding professionally as a frontend Dev and it seems like I have built my career so far just by knowing flexbox.
(I'm a flexbox wizard now btw)4 -
I'm not a web dev but I am pretty sure it is not so easy!
TNW just lost it's respect from me for this click bait!3 -
As a dev that can't work from home, sincerely, fuck you weather. I'm gonna punch the next person that says climate change isn't real.2

My dad let me use how computer and have me a VB6 book when I was like 5.
I took it from there though it seems it tube in the family.
Dad's a Dev
I'm a Dev
My younger brother is also a Dev
My mom is QA, though used to be maintenance dev I think2 -
I'm fucking frustrated.
Almost Every project, almost every task I did in the past 6 months has been a failure or partly done. Even the most trivial of tasks take me hours to complete, after immense googling and copypasting.
I know that I'm a junior with less than a year of dev experience but it feels I'm traversing through hell itself. I truly love to program, have tremendous passion and want to be a professional dev but it seems destiny itself wants me to keep doing what I do best but hate(Sysadmining).
When will this nightmare end? When will I be able to accomplish anything I need with code with so much ease, like my dev friends do? How many more courses, bootcamps should I fucking attend and how many more tutorials to watch? When will be able to work at nights without falling asleep? When will I have a fucking dev job and freelance projects instead of being a goddamn server-managing monkey?14 -
I'm really crying right now while reading golang projects/libraries.CANT F**ING FIND WHAT INTERFACE/S WERE IMPLMTED!!!! Help me Oh Lord!
I'm a java dev btw.15 -
A year ago I was hired as a Jr dev to assist the senior dev because he was so busy. Within 2 months he was pushed out and I replaced him. I thought maybe he just got busy with other things or found a new job.
After working alone this past year, I was told last week that since I am so busy with things outside the job, they were hiring someone to help me finish the project I'm currently on.
(for context : I work as a contracted dev for a small dev company of 5 or so people. One for each language/os.)
I can't help but think that I'm probably being pushed out and replaced. I flat out asked that, but never got a reply. Now I'm 70% through a project and disgruntled with everything. Not sure how I'm supposed to feel really.
If they want to replace me for one reason or another that's fine, I just wish they weren't shady about it.
I should probably be working right now, but I'm going to take my kids to the pet store to clear my head. I'll enjoy a little time away from my computer.2 -
That moment when you actually finish the side project 😂
https://pywal.herokuapp.com/
It uses https://github.com/dylanaraps/pywal in the backend
PS - I'm not a front end dev18 -
I was in a good mood until I read this weeks dev-question. I'm now having an existential crisis. Why do I do this? What's the end goal here? I don't know what my biggest dev career dream is. Maybe I should get a dog and live in the mountains. I think, I need another moment...7
-
Started a new job as a senior dev but with a framework I've never worked with and I just feel like I'm slow AF and just not qualified for the job. I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm greiving my dog that passed last Tuesday.6

Applying for web dev jobs in a state I'm about to move to...yeah you thought tech interviews were hard! Try impressing someone over the phone and that's your only chance :/2

I'm a junior dev, been on placement a year.
I get tasks done mostly on time, my pull requests are merged, yet I still feel like what I'm writing is seriously under quality.
What point will I stop writing code that isn't good enough to not be stressed about? 😷7 -
Hi everyone I'm new there =)
Basically i'm just here for the stickers.
But this look like a really fun place to be as a dev, so i'm maybe going to stay a while ;)
anyway have a great day, you can resolve this bug !5 -

Dev: Hi manager I have those 13 tasks on me and I won't finish on time.
Manager: Well all those items needs to be finished on Time, how YOU are going to resolve it?
Dev:😵😵😭😤🥺
Manager: there is additional defect to check please take it on priority ,it a real easy one , I'll do it my self in 5 min but I'm too busy
Dev: ETA?
Manager : by the end of the day.
Dev: Well it's already end of the day.
Manager: Exactly, I knew I can count on you .
Dev:🥺🥺🧐
****Next day *****
Manager: Hey sorry to call you on your cell but I see there were no progress on yesterday issue.
Dev : Sorry Manager I'm sick.
Manager : O.K feel well (🤬)
Dev : thank you so much (😎fk you asshole😎)3 -
The project is nowhere near complete, the customers are waiting for demo/proof of concept. the code is spaghetti and I'm burned out.
Oh, and I'm a solo dev.2 -
Ok tomorrow I'm gonna kidnap one dev or two and I'm gonna release them only when I fully fucking understand how to fucking send an image to a private registry goddamnit

My JS app can crash IE11. Totally reproducable.
Had a fun debugging session to find out how this is triggered. Happens inside a deeply recursive call in a library I'm using which redraws the DOM.
Found a hacky workaround to avoid that as I see no real solution. It's not like I'm responsible for fixing IE. These are the days where I'm happy I'm mainly a backend dev...4 -
First dev job is my current one.
I'm a software engineer in test, writing automated UI tests for web and mobile apps.
Its pretty great. I work from home with flexible hours. I have a boss but he doesnt manage my dev team, he just checks in to make sure I'm getting support, training and have all my questions answered. My dev team is myself and 2 other people, both of which are cool, and all the work is dev-driven.
Might just stay here until retirement, that sounds easy.2 -
!(isRant(thisPost));
Submitted my third pull request today in just a couple months as an intern, got told I'm doing a great job and already being considered to move to a more in depth dev team. Honestly a dream come true. Great company, great people, and I have a solid shot at a REAL full time dev position after college. I'm so happy man all that work finally paying off. -
Imagine being a senior dev with a green junior that says: "Well maybe there is a better way and I just don't know"
and you say:
"There is, I'm telling you"
only to continue on discussing it more.5 -
My brother (not a dev) asked me for help for his A* algorithm he's trying to optimize.
I'm so proud5 -
Nothing ruins my day like having to touch up python scripts. I'm predominantly a Java dev and never learned Python properly so every time I do it its THE WORST2
-
I'm tempted at some point to get a non-dev job. After about 2 weeks I could automate everything then just slack off.5
-
Not really dev but: Starting in a new job this August, I'm going to be honest and say I'll miss the warm days of lunching outside the university's beautiful Informatics department.
-
I was a c# - sql server dev in every other project I was in.. now in this new project I'm doing only sql server, checking on procedures and data, to calculate risk indicators for financial instruments. I'm away from home 5/7 days a week 😭 I miss C# . I'm so sad 😭 😭4
-
I'm the only dev in a project. I'm a frontender. It was supposed to be a front end project. Now I know more about ruby and postgres than I wanted. Thanks for learning opportunities, I guess. Good that the deadline is still pretty far away.2
-
lead dev: hey, I just committed but can't push
me: you need to add a remote repository, you don't have any yet
lead dev: what you mean by remote? 😕😕😕
me: explain what "push" does.
lead dev: ( with didn't get it expression ) hum...
me: (I think I'm in the wrong place) 😐😐😐😐 -
I have that idea about starting a non dev project, but use some dev skills.
I'm thinking about raising shrimps 🦐 to distribute (maybe at first just for testing). I can use raspberry pi with some sensors (Oxygen and food etc...) to semi-automate the raising process5 -
My biggest challenge has been moving away from an unmaintainable Java/Tomcat/Spring Security application server to a Node.js/Express application server. That handles single sign on and two factor authentication. In 2 weeks.
I'm a front end dev. I'm sure it's fine 😓6 -
I'm thinking about making an linkidin account. I'm mostly a privacy centered person so I don't have any social media. Should I do it because it can maybe help me in my career? I'm currently at my first junior dev job.
Love to hear your opinions.3 -

I'm looking for recipe to try and make as I'm a bit too bored and my school life is being a bitch. Can anyone recommend me their favorite recipe?
And yes, I'm bold to assume you guys can cook20 -
After 2 weeks of ranting I have honestly ran out of rants.
Either my life as a dev is too good or I'm clearly not coding enough.
The later seems more plausible. -
I'm a young dev with ADD. Basically I just need to stay up late, and then get myself to hyperfocus on my code. It typically gets done in time to get a decent night's sleep.1

While watching 'theory of everything'
Mom: Even Stephen had a girlfriend.
Me: I'm a dev, not a scientist! -
It's been 1 month in my first dev job.
I'm really happy but there is one problem...
Despite my role as a full stack dev in a fullstack team, I deal with only frontend stuff so far.
I asked to get some backend tasks from my boss, and he said "in due time".
Is it because I'm a junior? Is it normal?5 -
Finally started my side project. Everyone says I'm gonna drop it far before it's done, but I still have hope! I'm not sure if I'm blind or motivated, but I guess I'll find soon enough!
FYI, I'm a mobile dev (c#) but I'm gonna try to learn something else along the way : it's a web project!!!
I'm in the excitement phase, I'll see you in the depression phase.2 -
Realize I'm a high school student that doesn't dev professionally (yet) and talk to friends, watch Netflix, or shoot some photos.

Not a rant, not even dev related..
I'm just soooo super excited & happy for Janja Garnbret, she won first ever olympic gold in climbing.. woop wooop! -
I hate doing discovery and system analyst type crap. I'm a Dev, not a technical documenter. I'm not the product owner and I shouldn't be defining requirements for the application. Why does this seem to happen a lot?1

Wooh! I finally have some work, I'm now the composer for a small dev team, unpayed of course, but this is a fangame, a passion project. I'm so happy!4

Spent years ranting about being a contractor and freelancing. Finally got a job at a big company. Now I'm hating it and missing my old flexible work life. Hello dev rant, I'm back!4

What would be a good dev burial?
I'm thinking somehow represent my ashes in binary, commit my testament and have my loved ones do a git push.11 -
I learned how to code so I could build my startup ideas. Jokes on me, now I'm just a full time dev.1

Sup, guys!
Looking for a course (even paid one) that completely covers HTML/CSS.
P.S> I'm backend dev
P.P.S> Yes, I m afraid of frontend :)9 -
So I got reprimanded for some error on a site. I proved that this was a back end problem and that this has nothing to do with me (I'm just a front end dev). Didn't get a single apology, the dev who broke the thing got off scot free and now i have to work overtime while they publish the changes to test them

How do y'all deal with reading other people's code?
Context: was given a frontend project (I'm a frontend dev) that was started and is managed by a backend dev who just started doing frontend.

I don't know whhat is the best part to be a dev, cos I'm sitting here at age 29 and learn to be a dev. Sometimes I feel I never gonna make it, but sometimes I think soon I'll know enough to be hired. But I really enjoy it btw. :)2

Wow it's been years since I've been on dev rant. Awesome to see it still going.

I'm taking a year out from my degree to do a software dev placement. I fought hard to get it and totally smashed the interview. But I'm still nervous as all hell and not sure I want it.
I think it stems from not actually feeling like I'm a real dev yet. I feel like I'm a big fish in a small pond at uni, which is why I took the job. That and the fact I never really made many friends there. Still can't shake the feeling that I'm just going to fail miserably...
I guess this is what they call "impostor syndrome".3 -
Allright, so.. 3 (sort of 4) dev projects at work (7 roles in total), 2 (sort of 3) DEV projects at home, 2 guys approaching to me via messenger w/ DEV/Linux questions, family (with a baby), construction works in the apartment, taking care of the farmstead,...
Whenever you ask "what do you do", I'm not even sure where to start.
Whenever you call me with "Hello, I'm calling from company X, do you have some time to answer a few questions" I sort of want to hit someone really hard before answering "yes, sure". -

Is there a server side framework that will build a website for me? I'm not a web dev, but I'd like to build a web app. What I'm looking for is a framework that will essentially be like a GUI framework and build the html and requisites. I prefer Python, but I'm still curious if it exists at all.6

Time to face the truth.
I'm being moved from one team to another. Which is great.
But the reason I'm being moved is to take over for another dev. So that dev can get a promotion. So basically I'm getting a promotion, without the pay raise.
I can't fight this either.
So I'll take this as an opportunity to get all the experience. Also begin looking around.1 -

Long story...
I'm a junior-ish dev (worked 3 year part time in a small company)
I've been assigned the happy task of doing some performance profiling on our windows application to see where we can work to make the app run smoother.
Visual studio profiler keeps crashing when generating the report when I do CPU sampling.
I'm a very unhappy Dev right now.1 -
The main developer at the company just got a new gig and now I'm the sole dev. Everything in the production environment is legacy and in C#. Guess it's time to take a crash course...

Everything I know is self taught... From a time I dunno when I'm 20, so likely just after the year 2000
From my perspective I think different from most devs more formally trained, which can be to my advantage , the downside of this I'm terrible with names, everything in computing has a anagram.
I'm bad with names anyway... Dyslexic 😉. But if explained to me I know what it is your on about.
I consider myself a good dev, not experienced but otherwise good. But I want to be the best...
I'm also a hacker (nice one) which I think helps me build better more secure programs knowing common vulnerabilitys
I'm proud of what I've achieved so far. Whilst I'm not perfect nor is my work that's what I work towards ... As should every dev -

After I finished the university, I felt like I didn't know anything. I'm learning everyday something new in my work (I'm working 8 years as a dev), but I can't say comfortably that I'm good at programming. Hi friends of devRant. I'm looking for some advise.
I love learning new things(tech). I want to try out a lot of things like crypto, game dev, AR/VR, etc. I'm also a student and worried about my career. You know you just can't keep exploring technologies and not focus on a single track. Currently, I'm good with web dev. It feels so difficult at times. I hate leetcoding/competitive programming. So you can guess I'm not great with whiteboard interviews. How do I manage time to learn new things and also be able to land a job in a domain? Do you ever feel the same? Any career advise?5 -
TL;DR: what salary would you give a mid or senior Symfony fullstack dev. What would you ask during interviews?
We're currently looking into hiring a fullstack Symfony dev, focus on frontend. Expirience wise it should be a mid to senior role, as I'm the only other dev. We're looking for someone remote, so don't really care where they're comming from.
What salary would you deam apropriate? And what would you ask them in an interview? Any other things to consider?13 -

Guys, I'm getting a bunch of offers to work as a Frontend Dev in Berlin and some in Paris. I just wanted to ask you devs in those cities how it's like (especially the expats).9
-
I'm not much of a front-end dev and tasked myself to make a site for the dev group I'm in. Figured that it doesn't need any big libraries since it's a simple one page.
Boy was I wrong. After about 3 to 4 hours of getting nowhere with css, switched to Bulma and in about half an hour, not only did it look decent but it was responsive and fast and clean.
Bless bulma and it's developers. Sure saved my ass3 -
Wrote a method a while ago to simplify a task.
Today I found some old code from a previous dev which was almost identical.
I'm either on the right path or were both on the wrong path. 😂 -
Hey Guys! I'm a beginner to web dev side... I feel pretty overwhelmed because of lot of tech around...I want to know which tech stack it will be helpful in my career12

How do I balance my social life with dev life? Well, I try to meet with my friends at least 2 times a week, on fridays I'm taking dancing lessons, after that me and people from lessons go out for a bear and maybe to a club. There is also a girl there who I would like to meet more, but she is older and I'm shy as fuck. The rest of my time is mostly dev5

Should I buy a Surface pro or get a pc assembled for Linux or get a pc assembled for Windows. I'm new to dev and not planning to be a web dev. I already have a MacBook Pro and at work I have a Windows desktop. Also I'm planning to get in to gaming. Whatever OS it is I will be exploring it and learning. I have read so much on what would be thr best option but still can't make a decision.6

Don't tell dev rant. But I'm going use ADB to sniff their SQL packets and make a neral network with all the posts for that damn stress ball3

Worst part of being a dev?
I'm sure it is working on a problem for a long time that you forget what the problem was in the first place... -
Why do people refuse to use cli tools development enviroments?
I'm wasting my time cleaning a drupal codebase bc the previous dev committed the modules instead of using composer....1 -
Apparently I'm a C# dev too now... Things are different.. Like in some ways better.. But still weird and change is always a bit comfortable at first3
-
I'm not a web dev, but I hear a lot of talk about dependency injection from fellow devs on the web scene. Wtf is it? Please explain it to my smooth brain12
-
Guys, I'm a bit into those dev-stickers, but the hell, I can't find any Pascal ones.
If someone know where to get them, please share with us/me.
Thx in advance.5 -
Q: I'm using make as a simple task runner. `make build` instead of a longer build command etc. It sucks that I can't simply pass some params like `make build dev`, instead I have to pass them as variables: `make build tag=dev`.
Can you recommend a standard, cross-platform (Linux, OS X) tool for this?9 -
I spent 2 years as android dev, after that another 2 years as game dev (current work).
Now I wanna go back to being android dev but I kinda lost self confidence and feels like I'm starting from square 1. Also I will struggle explaining my 2 years gap of working with game development.
Feels like I'm a junior in the area. Feeling totally useless since the way I am now I couldn't even pass android dev interview or complete a tech task.
Having ADHD doesn't help with his. Having gained +25kg and being a fat fuck doesn't help also.
Fuck me.6 -
dev is like a trading game: "ok, so I'm gonna trade that night's coding for a night's sleep so I can be fully recharged tomorrow." "ok, now I'm gonna trade that night's sleep for a night full of coding."

This was my first week as Jr Dev. I'm excited, first commits, PR, issues and hotfixes. Any advice for me?
Have a nice weekend!! -
!dev
devRant help me decide on something...
I feel like learning a new language but can't decide, I'm torn between Swedish (because I love Sabaton) and German (I have a character in my book who is german)...10 -
waste a few hours trying to debug shit im working on a feature branch, only to check main branch and it turns out somebody else broke main but the dev environment i'm piggy backing on using is cutting edge
i now miss having a separate individual dev environment to use, but i suppose id lose on some perks probably -
Really don't want to work tomorrow. I have this PM who just constantly over burdens me. I'm in a tiny team of me and one other dev. Need a holiday soon! (Been 2 years) Currently doing the dev on 4 sites at once on my own.3

I'm a dev with a full time job and a family. Any recommendations on the best way to pick up side work in the US that won't completely blow out a work life balance?1
-
If you guys take syntax changing frameworks as still coding on the language the framework based on, I'm a c++ dev from now on.
P.S: read the tags3 -

What do you have: a "dev" or a "workplace" directory in your home? I always had a "dev" for my projects and I think I'm not alone, but I can't be sure10 -
will ever firebase replace java in android dev? I'm a web dev wanted to hear about it from android guys4

I'm a 2nd year software development student in college and I'm looking for a new laptop and I thought who'd be better to help me than the fine people at Dev rant. My budget is 700 euro1

So I'm a fresher and recently joined a startup as a software dev trainee. The talk has been ON this whole week of me getting ragged. D-day came today. Pizzas were ordered. And they pleaded to atleast make them feel like I'm being ragged. 😂2

Now I didn't become a dev solei to avoid paperwork but the lack of paper was appealing...
I'm stuck in a support gig because it pays more than any of the dev jobs I got offered and I do is write is docs on Confluence.
Please no "Money isn't everything" comments. I agree but the dev offers I got, I couldn't live on
