I have decided to build a computer right from the logic gates. Not physical, though. Everything will be basically built on top of a NAND gate.
Prayers needed! 😁😂43 -

devRant needed my "physical address" to send me stickers.
I sent them: 8D:*E:85:12:**:**
Waiting for the stickers... :-/6 -
So, when counting physical objects, my 4 year old daughter keeps starting at "zero." 🤓
It's the weirdest thing, and I've even tried to discourage it. But, hey, she uses it correctly...so, I'll just roll with it.3 -

Look at what I just found reorganizing my closet!
Ubuntu 5.10 from when they actually used to mail a free physical copy to try it. It's the third release of the OS and the one that started the alphabetical naming convention with Breezy Badger. Might give it a nostalgic try tomorrow 😁11 -
I wonder how would devRant send the mail with my MAC address? The hard way by tracking down my system having having the MAC address and deliver it to me?? 😂😂
DevRant is being unaware that we all are devs here 😂13 -
C is a cool programming language where if you want to return a string from a function you have to set up an entire physical-universe human social system for adjudicating who is responsible for freeing it "In order to create a C string, you must first create civilization"
"In order to create a C string, you must first create civilization"10 -
Gotta love clients which ask you for a quote to expand the system you did for them, then a week or two later "accidentally" found some cheap absolutely garbage dev that made it for 1/5th of your price and during all that destroyed half your work, by e.g. replacing uuids with just ids, making the system now leak how many users there is, all their user saved content, allowing to just increment through them all, also then acting surprised when I decline any further work with them.
Then theres also clients that even after explaining all physical or software limitations, act like you should be a core developer and just fix that, for fucks sake you were using freaking excel sheets before, be happy with any possible change.3 -
Me, doing ui design: 'hm, i feel like jumping into machine learning right now'
Me, writing a ml chatbot: 'but what if i extend flutter with my old custom android components'
Me, porting java components to dart: 'hold on, p5js has vectors, i could make a physical simulation'
Me to me: 'why are you like this'10 -
"Almond, I thought you said the cause of the outage the other week was that our server crashed?"
"The Tomcat server crashed, yeah. Not the physical server." (And you won't give me the time or budget to spin up any kind of redundant one, but that's besides the point...)
"Ok, but I've spoken to ops and they say none of the servers have gone offline in the last month?"
"Yup, the physical server was fine, it was the Tomcat server running on it that crashed."
"...so the server didn't crash?"
"We're mixing terms here. There's two things that can be referred to as the server. One is the physical machine, and one is an application running on it. The physical machine was fine, but
the application running on it crashed."
"What?! It's a very simple question. Did the server crash, or didn't it?!"

Paypal Rant #2
Paypal might just be the only company with 98% of their employees being support staff because not a soul on this planet knows how to work with that fucking piece of shit of a company's service.
No really, if there was a shittiness-rating from 1-10 (10 = worst) you would have to store paypal's rating as a string or invent a new data type because no CPU could fucking work with such a big ass fucking number.
If I had to choose between Paypal and going back to manually trading physical goods/animals for stuff I would gladly choose the latter, because Paypal, go suck a bag of dicks you useless fucking shitpile of a "company".8 -
You know the story about Battlefront 2? How long it takes to farm points to unlock those cool characters like Darth Vader etc? Yeah, it takes some time. Time that I necessarily don’t want to spend on mindless playing. I thought I’d try to beat the system by building this thing that would play the game for me by moving and jumping every few seconds.
I already have the code ready and now I just need to build the physical thing that will actually interact with the controller.
I am using an Arduino Uno with two micro servos.
Honestly I just want to see if I could build it, I’m not sure I will actually use it (you barely get any points if you’re not killing people anyway).
I’ll keep you posted with the result!13 -
Things I like about WFH
-save petrol and mileage
-work in underwear
-big TV during lunch
-time saved by no commute
-lie down during meetings
Things I dislike
-feel like my room has been invaded by work/miss the physical separation of work and home
-distractions and temptations
-they moved the stand up to ealier because of WFH
-Everything has to be a meeting. No just popping by someone's desk with a quick question
Sometimes I miss physically seeing my colleagues/getting out of the house but not often11 -
Assembly...
Do I really need to say more? Okay, it's low level so there is no abstraction. All you deal with is cold naked mathematical truth and physical limitations.
It's still ❤️8 -

I was doing a physical security engagement on a clients home. The door had a new smart lock, I called his landline to inform him it was us at the front door. I got the answering machine, and figured it'd be funny to say "Alexa, unlock the front door." To our surprise, the front door unlocked.3

Does anyone else fantasize about giving up programming and go live in a jungle or doing other things that require more physical effort?
I've been learning carpentry, farming, DIY power generation etc. The goal is to be self-sufficient and go live in a fucking jungle someday. Or legally buy some cheap land far from the city and automate the shit out of it. No wait, I'll just live there as a normal farmer and write code if I feel nostalgic or something.
I think anyone other than me could have expressed that better.14 -
Everyone’s a remote worker at our company by default. Literally no HQ or central physical office to report to. As it should be for most people who are knowledge workers or coders. Why commute and pollute and all that nonsense? It doesn’t make sense anymore for a lot of people like us.14

I'm typing this with my mouse and an on-screen keyboard, because I don't have my physical one at the moment...
Fuck, imagine coding with a mouse...6 -

I often find myself reading a physical copy of a book or something written on paper and my brain just wants me to Ctrl+f3 -
i had this weird dream. i invented a programming language that was connected to the physical world. every time an object was instantiated during runtime, a 3D printer would print this object immediately in real time, into the void of a confined space without gravitation (like a physical stack, but not like a stack). if this object was passed objects as function parameters of its methods, these little objects were printed as well and temporarily moved into the orbit of this object, orbiting it like electrons or little moons.21

Five US quarters are about 1oz in weight and should hold down most keys on most keyboards.
I knew this because we had an error on a server with a pop up window that was only "ok". We couldn't kill the process because critical so we left a stack of change on enter until it it was done running and we could leave for the night.3 -
When you chop down a tree it does not magically levitate because you misconfigured the chainsaw.
Lumberjack or carpenter would be a good life for me. Just being able to do something with physical consequences.5 -
Completely unrelated to dev stuffs but I just pre-ordered the first physical album in my life 😍
Can't wait till half December 😋13 -
Robots done, for now! Well, the basics are done. Just fueling up at the moment :)
Tomorrow I'll put up a little gif of it moving around, but I wanted to get this out as soon as possible, because making physical things isn't my strong point, and I ran into a lot of problems
Shoutout to my school for having a free to use laser cutter2 -
When a programmer is in love,
He doesn't care about the UI, but cares about the algorithm and functionality.
In real life, he care about what is inside, not the physical appearance. :)5 -
Ok wtf? How is it that I can give myself admin access to almost any Apple computer just by turning it on, holding down two keys, and then removing one file called “.AppleSetupDone”, without any kind of authentication? And I get access to all of the data on the device too. Within two minutes of having physical access to the computer.
This is a company with millions of devices in use, why is this even possible? And the only way to prevent it is to have a firmware password, which, by the way, is not a default option...are you serious9 -
My roommate's CS Prof literally makes them print their code on PAPER (max 80 chars to a line) and submit it to his physical dropbox across campus. This includes end of term projects where a single submission might have literally 20 pages of code.
I don't know what to say.13 -
Programmers then:
No problem NASA mate, we can use these microcontrollers to bring men to the moon no problem!
Programmers now:
Help Stack Overflow, my program is kill.. isn't 90GB (looking at you Evolution) and 400GB of virtual memory (looking at you Gitea) for my app completely normal? I thought that unused memory was wasted memory!1!
(400GB in physical memory is something you only find in the most high-end servers btw)9 -

Three days I'm not there, three bloody days and the 2nd sys admin has managed to:
Destroy the auto load balancing that I have scripted and implemented
Fuck up the backups to the cloud, and to a tape drive.

Once upon a time I sent my CV to a handful of companies. Just for fun I mailed them my physical CV copies + personal statement/motivational letter (3 pages total).
Right at the end of the horribly formatted 12pt Comic Sans pages it read:
"Turn pages to read the Helvetica version".
Never actually wanted those jobs anyway...2 -
!dev but definitely rant
Here's a fucking thought:
How is holding women over different standards at events and (non-physical) competitions (hackathons especially, somehow) NOT widely considered sexist? I don't even mean towards men - yes, of course.
But also towards women: By preferring their results in some competitions in order to "support them", you implicitly degrade them to be small children in need for praise. You imply that you expect them to perform worse. By "women-first" PR bullshit, you do what you claim to be against. Fuck you.
Why can't we just hold everyone to the same fucking standards? Women can be just as good in tech as men, when interested. I would even make a point that these different standards hold back women from trying to get into any tech-related career.17 -
Most toxic work culture ?? oh boy where do I start.
Getting verbally abused and physical threats over bugs found in production.
All kinds of office politics going around where everyone openly admitted not liking others in other departments.
Your day's salary gets taken away if u are late by even 1 min. And no overtime pay and no you cannot say no to that either or end up getting laid off.
Company brags about giving their employees their salary on time.
Only the devs who have lasted more than 10 years in the company will be heard.
After so many job switches I managed to find one where I get to WFH and pretty much face no toxicity from others.8 -
Let's hear your embarrassing confessions.
I'll start: I have never built my own PC's or set up my home network.
I don't really know much about hardware and physical networking, and frankly I can't be bothered to deal with it.28 -
Just bought my first physical server for a cheap price second hand. It's a low end thing but hey, you've got to start somewhere, right!4
-
So finished a project for a client, the client signed a contract. He signed off that all milestones where reached. Text me that he was very pleased.
We give 30 days to pay. 8 days before the due date he asked for a meeting, telling us he wants to go another direction and he wants the source code to show the new development team he's going with to get a quote from them. I tell him that, that's fine he can have the source files once he pays for the product which was in the contract they signed mind you!! And this FUCKING DICK FART threats to sue, saying he's calling his lawyer, threatening me and my development partner with physical violence, and saying he's going to sue me personally not because me work was bad but because I refused to give him the product before he paid. I was calm we offered to meet his new dev team explain the code, and show them what they needed to see to give the clients a quote and they would not allow that, saying how now I'm not getting paid instead I'm getting sued and that he will publicly shame my startup company. Just complete bullshit, good thing I saved the original contract he wanted me to sign which had threats of physical violence I. His contract... Which in retrospect should have been a hint, but it was the highest paying contract we ever landed. Seems he never planned on paying. What's a guy to do?26 -
Describe the most hellish development environment you can imagine for yourself:
Me:
Workstation OS: Windows Vista with network boot, no hard disk and can't save local files
Server OS: Closed physical appliance of Windows Server 2000 with no possibility of installing extra software
Languages: Visual Basic, Perl, Php, assembly, ABAP
IDE: None, just echoing code lines to files
Web technologies: IIS, Sharepoint, Java applets, asp
Network: No internet access, internal company network only
Web browser: IE 6
Graphical design software: msPaint
Version control: Emails
Team communication: Emails
Software distribution vector: Emails
Boss: some 40 year old guy who knows nothing about computers
Not kidding most of these stuff were actually real in my previous workplace.11 -
Literally anything but work with computers, I think. They ask my brother to fix anything technical in the house and ignore it when he fails. They haven't been able to watch TV in six months. When I suggest that my (well-intentioned but mostly nonverbal) sibling probably shouldn't go into development, they tell me I don't know my own job. I suspect they're convinced I do graphic design.
I write C++ applications that run physical simulations and sometimes train AI models for pattern recognition and highlighting unusual incoming files.
They suggested I go to an undergrad program for data science. I already *do* data science for money and I already have an undergrad degree. 🙄4 -
Our company Nerf wars got a little rowdy one year, and a co-worker knocked over a (senior citizen) co-worker just to “win”. Like full on take down body slam. So much for no physical contact.3

Just because a developer is a programming wizard does not mean we are physical hardware installation wizards as well.
I hate when people ask me to setup their personal home systems; especially networked printers.3 -
This is fucking bad. I just stumbled across a database online, unencrypted plain text containing ALL details of thousands of students at my university. Full names, ID number (SSN), student numbers, address, family info, medical aid info, physical fitness reports
What do I do? I was not on any VPN or proxy when I accessed it19 -
A meeting about defining the
definition of done (…)
I know I mentioned it before, but it’s beyond stupid.
- Lasted 2.5 hours
- Didn’t solve shit
- Could have been solved by adding a freaking column in our Jira, but someone wanted a physical board cause let’s waste paper I guess.
Just imagine 2.5 hours of continuous suggestions and stupid reject reasons.
Fun fact: it was called by a “senior” dev which rejected every single purposal cause they also didn’t want to change the process.
Idfk why I didn’t leave the company sooner, had to get a massive burnout before realising my sanity is worth more than being paid the minimum in the office.1 -
Noticing a bug once or twice but not being able to reproduce it after that gives me anxiety. This job is detrimental to one's mental and physical health. Serious question. How to unfuck yourself?4

Mechanical Engineer friend took Machine Learning as an elective subject in college thinking that it had something to do with the Physical machines.
His reaction during the class was priceless.3 -
Had no internet for hours.
Called the support.
"We will fix it!" they said and they actually did. So maybe there are competent people working there as well???
No. Of course not.
Two hours later I receive a call from them. "It was not our fault. There was an update so we had to plug the cables back into the right ports."
Software update

I really wanna share this with you guys.
We have a couple of physical servers (yeah, I know) provided by a company owned by a friend of my boss. One of them, which I'll refer to as S1, hosted a couple of websites based on Drupal 7... Long story short, every php file got compromised after someone used a vulnerability within D7's core to inject malicious code. Whatver, wasn't a project of mine, and no one bothered to do anything about it... The client was even happy about not doing anything about it. We did stop making backups of such websites however, to avoid spreading the damage (right?). So, no one cared about this for months!
But last monday? The physical server was offline. I powered it on again via its web management interface... Dead after less than an hour. No backups. Oh well, I guess I couls keep powering it on to check what's wrong with it and attempt to fix it...
That's when I've learned how the web management interface works: power on/reboot requests prompted actual workers to reach the physical server and press the power on/reboot buttons.
That took a while to sink in. I mean, ok, theu are physical servers... But aren't they managed anyhow? They are just... Whatever. Rebooting over and over wasn't the solution, so I asked if they could move the HDD to another of our servers... The answer was it required to buy a "server installation" package. In short, we'd have had to buy a new physical server, or renew the subscription of one we already owned for 6 months.
So... I've literally spent the rest of the day bothering their emoloyeea to reboot S1, until I've reached the "daily reboot reauests limit" (which amounts to 3 reauests. seriously), whicj magically opened a support ticket where a random guy advised to stop using VNC as "the server was responsive" and offeres to help me with the command line.
Fiiine, I sort of appreciate it. My next message has been a kernel log which shows how the OS dying out was due to physical components becoming unavailable after a while, and how S1 lacked a VNC server, being accessible only via ssh. So, the daily reboot limit was removes for S1. Yay.
...What to do though? S1 was down, we had no backups, and asking for manual rebooting every time was slow as Hell. ....Then I went insane. I asked for 1 more reboot. su. crontab -e. */15 * * * * /sbin/shutdown -r +5. while true; do; rsync --timeout=20 --append S1:/stuff .; sleep 60; done.
It worked. We have now again access to 4 hacked, shitty Drupal 7 websites. My boss stopped shouting. I can get back to my own projects.
Apparently, those D7 websites got back online too, still with malicious php code within them. Well, not my problem (for now).
Meanwhile, S1 is still rebooting.3 -

I love coding but i haven't touched a physical keyboard and mouse for 10 days! Feels nice for a change. 😃4 -
I quit my job… it got so exhausting, it had become all about last minute work and ETAs. The more I worked the sicker I felt. It started directly impacting my physical health which ended up affecting mentally too. I feel good that I got out of something very toxic but at the same time not working kinda makes me sad when I look at others working. I have consciously taken a break to clear my mind but it affects me that I don’t know what next.2

This is an old friend of mine, who recently joined the company I work with, 6 months back. And this is what he pinged me with yesterday.
This should be considered harassment at workplace, and trigger social, psychological, emotional, physical and all other sort of distancing.8 -
So today I found a way to break into any Apple Mac (provided the exploit hasn't been fixed by the owner) and access all private files, as long as I have physical access to it, in less than 5 minutes.
After finding this, a quick Google on the method reveals this has been a workaround for years.
And to think I once praised Apple for their security standards.
Edit: this was done to an in-house Mac that my company own, and had been password locked by a member of staff who had been fired, but held important company documents on the computer. It was in no way a breach of privacy.7 -
In a previous job as a system developer I had an office with a door. Unfortunately, the boss of the company had heard of "open door"-policies, and insisted on all physical doors being open all the time so he could pop his head in unannounced every 15 minutes with random chit chat and to see how work was going... :x2

I hate sales people. I get physical urges of puking when i see or talk to them. Because no matter what you say all i hear is "give me your money"3

FUCK.... My laptops LED screen just got a dead px stripe.... And the bad thing is that it is allmost in the middle of the screen.... Oh and it is 60px in length and about 3 px in height!!! And no signs of physical damage to the screen.... so they just died!!!!
And the warranty ended 3 months ago..... Fuck you ASUS!3 -
I bought my first VPS today. After years of hosting my email, websites, databases and backups services on my own physical servers both home and in real serverrooms.
Strange feeling, but it feels like something heavy was lifted from myself, I do not need to buy hardware if something fails.13 -
Six or seven years ago, I worked for a large financial organization as part of a very large effort to convert server assets from physical to virtual. The consultants on site were in bed with the vendor of a terrible piece of software designed for that purpose. After a couple weeks on the job I'd had it, and sat down in between sessions of "validating" the conversion procedure, and started writing my own software for converting Linux servers. After a couple days it was working great, and they wound up adopting my software as the default method for Linux conversions.
Years later, I'm interviewing for my current job and one of the interviewers tells me he used my converter some time later and loved it. Pretty sure it's what swung the interview for me. -

I just discovered Frink.
A programming language designed to make physical calculations simple.
Funny sample calculations.
See:

I (barely) wrote very few lines of code today and called it a day. In this state of burnout and actual physical fatigue, this is more than enough. God do I need a refresh!1

I don't know why I am a programmer. I went into engineering because I wanted to make video games. I did controls engineering to make physical systems go vroom. Now I mainly write software to make specialized physical systems go vroom. When I was a kid this was not what I would have wanted to do with my life. My 10 year old version of me is standing over me looking down saying "Pathetic". I feel like I need to do something about this before I die.
I want to make a game system for RPGs that is similar to an authoring tool to allow me to make games with some very specific features. Think creation kit for arbitrary RPG games. I am thinking I could make the authoring tool a product as well. If people want to make their own games. But I also want to make moddable RPG games using the authoring tool. I want to give people the ability to mod the game. So I am struggling with how to allow modding and sell an authoring tool. License to distribute unique games? I dunno, maybe I will just keep it as a modding tool for the games I make. I feel like good quality games are moddable. I hardly want to play anything that isn't.7 -
From 1978 comes the original, go to C programming language book. About 200 pages, packed full of the details of the C language. It’s a book that sits on your desk. No matter how many times I’ve read this book I always find something new in it.
Great book written.
Only recently purchased the physical books edition 1 and 2.. in the past I only ever read it on pdf or someone else’s hardcopy.
Being a embedded engineer, shame on me for not having this book at a desk ornament sooner lol.5 -
Does anyone else sometimes feel like quitting, selling everything, move to a small town in e.g. Texas, become a brick layer or carpenter and just start from scratch and build a honest working class day-to-day life? Or is it just me?...
In tech I always focus on what’s gonna happen next year, where will I be in 5 years etc.
I feel like by pursuing a good life I’m missing out on life 😅
Would be nice to do some honest, physical work and leave tomorrow behind for a while..11 -
How I solve complex problem during development.
1. I left my machine with all the thinking and start to think of another activity.
2. Start another activity I like specially a physical one like playing a game, jogging or just walking.
3. Then after I am fully involved with this activity I start to think of different scenarios of the problem I was trying to solve.
4. Eventually, different solutions came to my mind and I evaluate them one by one with respect to my problem.
5. I finalize a couple of solutions based on the evaluations.
6. Rush to my machine and start implementation to see if it work.
PS: During all these thinking I will be terrible at the activity I am doing.
Loop again if It didn't workout.3 -
Pixel 4 has had to restrict brightness and refresh rate to make up for the smaller battery capacity compared to pixel 3.
So you get a phone advertised as 90hz refresh rate, but does 60 most of the time and only hits 90 when the screen is at a specific brightness.
The max brightness had to be capped at about half of what a similar Samsung can do. Deep inside the kernel there is a disabled high brightness mode, meaning without root access and some hacks, you can’t even get the phone it hit its physical maximum. Leading users to complain about the phone screen being too dark.
What a heap of utter shit.

Someone else disturbing me while I'm thinking about technicalities. Makes me lose my shit because recollecting everything afterwards is often more difficult than the problem itself.
Note to self: tell cleaning lady to keep disturbances to a minimum when I'm working, and turn notifications on the Fandroids off before starting work. No I'm not interested in that Telegram message right now. And God bless OnePlus for putting in a physical slider for that.. more phone manufacturers should start doing this.4 -
My company is thinking of closing its office, and many other companies are doing the same in a bid to save money now that they realise WFH is just as effective.
I'm not a fan. Working from home for the next 30+ years with no variety in the physical environment, experiences or interactions I have in those 8 hours of my day is an absolutely depressing thought to me.7 -
The reporting department had a freak out because they couldn’t print to PDFs. Whole reporting nightmare and on fire.
Turns out it was printer unplugged a thousand miles away where someone fifteen years ago put a check in to ensure that a specific printer was connected before allowing physical print jobs.3 -
So fed up of existing.
I am not saying that I am suicidal, but if a truck was accelerating towards me, I would not bother to move.
Even though I consider myself decently successful in life in terms of career, friendship, and to some extent, family. I strongly feel that I am in a very wrong environment.
I have zero trust, safety, love, and nurturing care from my parents and others around me.
I lack physical privacy, psychological safety, and emotional void.
My hypothesis is that if I was in a better environment with slightly lesser responsibilities and needs better met, I could have achieved wonders. With that, who wouldn't?
Why do we exist? Just to suffer?25 -
we are learning how a disk rotates in order to preserve memory on the physical computer hardware. in order for this disk to preserve memory, it has to rotate by following laws of physics as a circular sphere with sine and cosine waves on the coordinate system. these sine and cosine waves that vibrate independently and periodically, which means that the disk rotates 10,000 orbits per second. a drill rotates 2000 orbits per second. 10,000 orbits per second is fast enough to cut your hand off in less than 1 millisecond. we are learning that this disk has to rotate so fast in order to preserve the memory which was stored by the database system with sql.

Help, I don't know if I want to code as a job for the rest of my life.
I feel that I miss physical activity in my job. Its just sitting and programming.
I like programming, it's an infinite series of puzzles, and I like puzzles. But more physical would be nice.
Maybe I should find a 2nd job that is more physical and balance the two.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?7 -

Not to mention that you replace all the USB port to a really "popular type C USB"5 -

Decided to go back to windows for a bit after not using it for about 6 months (on physical hardware) and literally forgot there was a start menu, minimise button, taskbar and that the window controls are on the right...
I have done the impossible and almost forgotten how to use windows, not sure if this is a good or bad sign9 -
Wellp, I just had a cowoker send me a screenshot. By that I mean a .pdf of the application we both work on that looks like she somehow manifested the program into the physical world and ran it through an early 90's copier, scanned the resulting piece of paper, and sent me that.

It is still blowing my mind how a button on my raspberry pi is programmatically functional in the same way as if I was programming a database and web app.
Fucking eh, why haven't I been doing this hardware stuff sooner? You can literally make physical shit happen. That is so cool!4 -
While in the banking world, I had a project where I had to automate an import into a shit system called CRAWiz. The data had to come from multiple archaic loan systems with no API and tons of shit data.
After implementing, the shit data came to light. Instead of fixing shit data (and using their loan systems correctly), they decided to go back to digging through physical files and manually importing. They blamed CRAWiz and decided to go with a new system to import their shit data into. I warned them repeatedly that a new system would not fix the shit data but they couldn't accept it. I left at that point. 😂 -
today was shit. I'm full of stuff to do at work, we're extremely understaffed, no one will stop pestering us, I'm failing at doing my tasks and our stack is extremely useless for the stuff we're required to do. on top of that I'm in physical pain and i had a test. oh and my computer is dead so i have to sort that as well. fuck. I'll just eat sushi and pass out. tomorrow will be worse.3

The quantity of pain is always constant. People do self harm to increase physical pain for emotional pain to decrease.
The only way to survive the pain of living is to learn how to create and contemplate.
There is no safe space. Agility is the natural way of survival. Something forcing you to “bend” doesn’t make you weak.
Things like discussions and anger rarely change anything but they take energy and tend to breed.
There is no universal meaning. There is no leaderboard at the end. This means you can invent your own meaning. I built my meaning on contemplating what’s right rather than fighting what’s wrong.7 -
Undoubtedly the most common mistake that devs do : Ignoring your personal health, be it mental or physical.
I almost went through a burnout before realising things need to change.
Changed my lifestyle upside down after that
- Switched from wfh to an office job
- I cycle 12kms a day now
- Got a standing desk for myself to be more active
- and have a journal where i literally dump everything off my brain2 -
ok
i acquired a mental and physical burnout exhaustion so no alarm clock can wake me up anymore
anyone have a better idea what to do for alarm clock to wake me up between 5-7am ?23 -

Programmers are the digital equivalent to Wizards.
Funny thought:
Just like a wizard manipulates the physical world, creating spells that obey his intentions, a programmer manipulates the digital world, creating processes and methods that obey his will.
There are quite interesting similarities.... Now where's my digital wizard cape!?5 -

I know that Microsoft gets a bad word for many things (and rightfully so), but one good thing that they do is host a yearly general developer convention in Israel called BlueHat IL.
I've been trying to get invited in for 2 years now (they have to manually accept your application because so many people want to be there and they would run out of physical space if they accepted everyone), and yesterday I FINALLY GOT MY INVITATION!!
So, if you are also going - meet me there!5 -
Kernel coming along slowly but surely. I can now fetch the memory map and use normal Rust printlns to the vga text mode!

I think software development would be immensely difficult if there were no internet and you would have to search everything in a physical library whilst left to your intellectual wit. That would require great skills.
I used to do it like that back in 1994, but of course now I don't have the time for that unless it would be on a hobby project.9 -

I'm always torn at the gym:
As a former rower, it gives me almost physical pain to see people on the rowing machines, flailing around and almost falling off sideways (rowing is an elegant, albeit masochistic sport).
However, as a swiss person, strangers are my natural predator and might eat me alive if I dare speak to them...3 -
my farther, it took me three hours to teach him how to use a mouse, and complains about not being able to find the free WiFi (he expects it to be something physical he can walk up to and take).

Linux software RAID and LVM are pretty powerful.
Bought a new server case for my home file server / VM host. 3U with 16 hotswap bays. Had 2x software RAID1 mirrors already with everything on them. Inserted 2 new disks with system running. Created new RAID10 array using these, with their mirrors as "missing".
Created new physical volume. Extended volume group into it, then used pvmove to transfer every logical volume across. Shrunk volume group to no longer use the old RAID1 array, disassembled that array, added its disks to the new array... Now just waiting for the mirror disks to sync up.
All this, with the system and several VMs still running.
And with a backup, of course ;)3 -
What's a good password manager for Linux?
A few (optional) conditions (in order of preference):
1. It's free
2. It supports ssh, gpg, etc.
3. It has a GUI (a nice one with gtk/qt support)
4. It's (properly) secure
5. It has FIDO U2FA support (i.e. supports physical security keys like Yubikey or Solo)
6. It has a browser extension
7. It's compatible/non-conflicting with gnome-keyring16 -
Society would be a much better place if people had same level of emotional/mental self awareness as much as they have physical self awareness.18

I’m currently still looking for a new job after two very, very horrible jobs. My doc said I’m worked out and shouldn’t work for a while because it really has some physical negative effects.
I always feel unenthusiastic, have breathing problems, crumbly, sweaty hands all the time.
But just today the CEO of a company I know from a previous customer texted me on behalf of another company which I’ve worked for where I was extremely happy. Sadly, that company wasn’t quite the focus I had as programmer.
But I’m happy to slowly be known in the industry around me and look positive in the future.8 -
*sometime during my sophomore year in university. I was a Biology major and just switched to Computer Science. I'm currently a senior graduating in the Spring.*
Me: "Mom and Dad I changed my major to Computer Science!"
Parents: "How will you be able to make a living playing games?"
Me: "I won't be playing games, I'll be coding/programming things and building software."
Parents: "I thought you wanted to become a doctor?"
Me: "Well I decided I wanted to choose a career that I like and I also didn't want to stay in school for 8 years. Also, the salary I can make as a developer/engineer is close to that of some doctors."
Parents: "Well we wanted you to go to be a physical therapist. We feel that it's the best option for you."
Me: "I think this is my best option because there aren't even enough people available to fill the jobs that will be around when I graduate. Which also means that I can make a higher salary."
Parents: "Well I guess we'll see if you can make a living and provide for a family just playing/making games."
Me: "That's fine I never needed your support anyways."
*My parents thought that if the job wasn't physical labor then it wasn't a "real job". (Idk how they decided that a Physical Therapist was a "real job") I moved out less than a year after this argument because I was constantly put down by my parents for coding/programming as well as playing video games in my spare time. They thought it was childish. This has shown me what I won't do when I become a parent.*
*Just a side note: I have paid for everything I own that wasn't gifted to me since I was 18 and had a job while attending college. I also got a scholarship to go to college, so my parents didn't have to pay for any of it.*2 -

I had a random thought yesterday.
I was thinking about a computer virus that's been influenced by AI (machine learning).
If we would train a model specifically for such a purpose, how massive would its impact be on the Internet and how effectively could it change the world's direction (not the physical rotation lmao)?2 -

Banned from travel
I was going to go to France this month to meet with the people of my company and have physical training and ended up finding out that I have military service when I went to renew my passport.
Since I found out I have become extremely devastated, I either have to serve for 1 year or wait 2 years after I turn 30 in order to pay a fine and be able to get out of this fucking prison, the worst thing is I had planned this trip with my manager in December and had no idea about this shit, I also contacted my friends in europe to plan a meetup and then it all went down the drain.12 -
So instead of crying, what if we create a new open internet? We could call it NettyMcNetface (NMN). 🌐 It'd be free for everybody and open for all content under all existing and new open licences for free and paid content, for personal and business use.
The only hiccup: it must be completely disconnected from the current internet. A complete reboot on a new physical network.
Does article 13 apply to that too?
Oh, and I bet there's already some initiative involving an alternative open network. Any tips?8 -
Dr. Robert Ford is that dev who made himself indispensable to the organisation by deliberately not commenting his code. He operated under the notion of those senior developers that are the physical manifestation of the documentation gatekeeping the project1

A remarkably stupid but efficient technique I invented today to measure the latency of an audio feedback channel involving multiple hardware elements that is difficult to synchronize by itself:
1. Knock. Observe the echo in the feedback.
2.Try to knock in such a way that the physical sound more-or-less lines up with the feedback. The human brain is really good at this on average.
3. Once you often only hear one knock (as perfect synchronization as your ear can tell), record several minutes of audio
4. Stop knocking, count the additional knocks in the echo
5. Multiply the average delay between knocks on the recording by the number of additional knocks from step 44 -

A weird one..
I spend a few hours every day simply walking in the nature. I'd like to use that time for coding. However it's easier to light fire under the sea than write code on a phone :)
then there are tablets. Not powerful enough for compilation nor does it have powerful IDEs, but it could be quite handy to vnc to a decent computer and do the stuff-stuff :) but tapping a screen ain't something pleasant. A physical kbd would be much nicer
So before I purchase a tablet with sim slot - are there any other, more suitable solutions?8 -
Fave IDE: Rube-Goldberg Distributed Physical Editor (RGDPE)

- a raspberry pi running an SMTP receiver and language service and a handler to invoke the compiler
- a speak and spell to print out the language service results
Why: why not?3 -

So there is a mall here that idk how but has little currents pass through it's supporting rails. And every time you touch it, it gives you a little shock.
I have been waiting for about 3 months now expecting a patch fix when I realized that physical production bugs have no patch fixes. More than 3/4th of the population is unaware of a whole different level of bug fixing frustration. Damn1 -
With all the rubber ducks and coding companions being thrown around in the rants I'm thinking about getting one myself... Merry Grav-Mass!
So I saw many „Merry Christmas“ posts here lately.
But many of you may have forgotten that 25th of December is the birthday of the greatest physician and mathematician of all time — Isaac Newton! So let's celebrate the existence of comprehensible physical laws!
One way to celebrate Grav-Mass is to decorate a tree with apples and other fruits. Glue them or attach them, but not too well! The idea is that occasionally a fruit should fall. Put them on the tree no more than 2 feet up, so that they won't get damaged or hurt anybody when they fall. Investigating and perfecting the methods for doing this is a great way expose a child to the process of scientifically studying the behavior of the physical world.
Merry Grav-Mass and happy New Year! 🍎

- leave home( and a lifestyle where i live/eat rent free, save 90% of pay check, start work at 12pm and end at 4pm but still renowned for being the most productive engineer, workout and party) to live near office and wfo 3 days/week
- quit a relaxed job + look for a similar role in highly competitive/unstable economy + stay at home with parents who are very much controlling, and repeatedly quarrelling amongst themselves and/or with me/my choices
yepp, both points are true about my home life: its a physical paradise as well as an emotional hell1 -
Back in the day when daily standups where still physical, i worked at a place you had to pay a euro if you where late. This money would then be used to buy the team dinner on pizza nights for example. Ofcourse everything changed with the daily standups being digital now.
How would you still implement somekind of correction for people being late unnecessary?3 -
So the contract for this big project with a client has some interesting content in it. I'm not sure if I can sign this in good faith.
Because I seem to be lacking guard dogs and a receptionist at my home office. Maybe I could build a force field for them.
And I'm not really looking forward towards having all my friends sign a document every time they visist.

Does anyone know a single-board computer like e.g. the raspberry pi that features a physical on-board audio input as well as an output?
I know that GPIO-header-boards like e.g. the hifiberry or WolframAudio (which seems somewhat deprecated by now) exist. I could probably also alternate to an USB-soundcard, but I'm curious whether someone might know a more compact solution.5 -
Do something physical where I can see the result.
Paint that bookshelf that I would do one day. Organize the big pile of mess in the storage, plant something in the garden. Something where you are reminded when you see it: ohh I fixed that and feel proud.
Organize ones and zeroes are sometimes a bit abstract for the primitive brain to give that fulfillment feeling.1 -

VR/AR - inferior interaction with the computer, just like touchscreen are inferior to physical buttons
Microservices - having a stew of different coding standards will in the end introduce performance issues due to layers needed to reduce code entropy
Agile - programming was and always will be creation on existing technologies. Every library writer who follows Agile is making a hellhole for anyone above the layer of abstraction
Web freedom and Anonymity - At this point it should be obvious already, this fad took 30 years too long5 -

My name, by western standards, is a "misspelled" version (it's actually the ancient Greek original). And here in SA there are some with the "normal" version of the name. All fine and dandy, spell it however you want for your kids. BUT STOP "CORRECTING" MY NAME! Anything and everything that stores my name these days has a 50% chance to get it wrong. What's worse is that is this is more prevalent when I WROTE IT ON A PHYSICAL APPLICATION FORM. NOBODY IS NOT GOING TO NOTICE IF THEY ACCIDENTALLY ADD A LETTER TO THEIR OWN NAME!13

Loader -> Instance -> Physical Devices -> Logical Device (Layers | Features | Extensions) | Queue Family (Count | Flags) -> Queues | Command Pools -> Command Buffers
Of course each queue family only supports some commands (graphics, compute, transfer, etc.) and everything is asynchronous so it needs explicit synchronization (both on the cpu and with gpu semaphores) too4 -
So.. I'm migrating a physical server to a virtual (Hyper-V) one.
The physical server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS6 and Windows SQL Server 2012.
I've set up a VM with Windows Server 2016, IIS10 and Windows SQL Server 2017.
I'm testing with just moving 1 db at a time (we have about 20, 1 per client running this software and a few others) and I've already imported all of the IIS sites.
So the database import and IIS import went smoothly and was surprisingly without hassle but now I'm trying to run the website that I imported the database for and it is throwing 503 Errors at me.
I've been trying to find out the cause but for some reason IIS isn't making any logs.
It's not any 64/32bit system problems (they're both x64) and I can't seem to find anything wrong with the imported config.
Anyone got any ideas?14 -
What diseases or health problems do programmers commonly suffer from?
How do you take care of yourself? What mistakes you made?

The new MacBooks look so nice. And Mojave is pretty nice, and dark theme! And the touch bar! The price is quite high but for the first time I'm actually debating getting one... Almost. But:
Why no escape key apple! You were so close! A physical escape key at the cost of your touch bar being 1 inch smaller! Is that too much to ask!
Many programmers use Mac. I can see why, it's a bsd variant, it's almost a Linux box except it's supported and accepted by the non-geeks of the world.
Many programmers use Vim! It's great!
So it stands to reason that a "not insignificant" amount of Mac users use Vim. Why would you do this to us? Or at least offer a "Vim model! With physical escape key, some nice out of the box vim buttons for the touch bar, a greatly inflated pricetag... Yknow, the works!" But nothing?! You almost had me apple.6 -
I use a DasKey Ultimate with blank keycaps at work and people always ask how the hell I can work with that board. I recently bought a Happy Hacking Pro for my tablet/laptop and I must ask the same question to those who daily drive these..
How the fuck do you deal with this retarded layout??
I used the dip switches to at least change the Del to BS but the physical key is stupid small, the control key position is just idiotic and no dedicated arrows? I use VIM and my work desktop is Linux and I come from a UNIX background. Still makes no sense.

Hi,
Would, someone who is doing web development, like to help me code a porno service agency? I will be the main pimp who will escort my bitches to our customers who will pay for the bitch they find attractive through the system that we code so the payment will go automatically after they make a purchase. They get the bitch, i pay the bitch some fee and the rest goes to both of us as commission. Ain't none of this physical. All of the products are digital. Customers get pics or vids thats all.

Not so sure about the ending, but I am also messed in the head about some of the thinking going on with consciousness. I suspected our thought processes are not completely body bound. I guess if the mind is interacting with a separate entity then it would need a physical mechanism. I dunno, seemed really speculative.

Worst interview ever happened a couple of years ago.
Both me and the company were certain we were a match. The only problem was the physical distance. I live in another city, and is quite stuck because of family matters.

So close, yet so far away.6 -
How do you stay positive?
[Boring monologue following, keep scrolling.]
I seem to always focus on the negative things and it's miserable not only for myself but also the people around me. I think about doing things more than doing them. I'm in my own head a lot. It's difficult to let go. I mask a lot (i.e. try to act normal, to not be [or rather feel] judged).
I'm trying to change - from today - by not complaining anymore about things out of my control, spending less time online / more outside and doing more sports. It would probably do me good to find an outdoors hobby, ideally a social/cooperative activity with some physical activity.
I just needed to let this out. To write it down and commit it to the void.26 -

When I am stuck on a problem, I try to get outside and do something physical. Go for a run, jump on the bike. Find it clears my head and helps me to see the code more clearly.

FUCK ANDROID EMULATOR!

I'm working on it right now. -
Man, I hate project managers who demand a near 100% SLA, but want the project to run off of a single physical server. Like. Sure, buddy, and when a stick of ram dies, or there's a 10.0 CVE released of the kernel, then how do we keep the machine running.
Some people, ugh5 -
Today I got the chance to try 1 of the 9 HoloLens available in my country. I'm completely mind blown. The ability to incorporate virtual elements in the real world and make them behave like real physical objects is incredible! I really hope AR gains traction to buy an headset for myself.
PS: Project X-ray is one of the most fun games I've ever played.1 -
I'm wondering.. Chinese have built all sorts of things we never knew we need in our lives. I'm wondering, is there anywhere a physical smartphone keyboard I could purchase? The old-school numpad, like on nokia 3310 or so.

Reason #69 why I'm considering nuking windows on my main pc.
I had to print something... (I know, why would I want a document to exist in the physical world?)
1. The pc couldn't see the printer, that was connected via USB... Replugging the cable fixed it... How?
2. I had to print images, so I had pre-opened the 9 files. After printing 4 images windows decided to update the imageviewer, closing all the instances and not open them again... Wtf?
So that's how my evening was fucked, how was yours?2 -
I work in physical sciences, and while a lot of my colleagues hiss and scream at programming and continue bench lab work. I have more freedom, creativity, and financial support for my computational research. So, for that, I'm thankful.

Okay, I have to ask it here, because I don't know how to ask on SO so I don't get banned.
I have a user mode driver (a dll and an inf file). How do I load it (aka call DllMain)? Do I have to install it first so it shows up in device manager? How do I load it then? No, there is no physical hardware involved, it's all software.
I've been searching for an answer for days, but when to comes to driver development, I'm such a noob that I don't even know what to look for.9 -
I remember the first time i didn't need to press a physical button in order to shut down my computer. I thought it was the greatest computer engineering achievement since the launch of minesweeper.

So a little while back, my location was officially switched from "Specific Office Location" to "Home Office", i.e. I was finally _officially_ full-time WFH. The other day, I had to visit one of our physical offices for the first time in years. What I didn't realise until that point was that I HAVE to work from home: I have to access a specific VPN in the US to do my work, but you can't connect to any VPNs from within our office.
Genius.

Who else was fascinated by the DOM when first encountered? When I first began my journey as a programmer I found that the term Technology was always set in strictly a physical sense in my mind; that is until I started to realize that every language is in fact a piece of technology, which is supported by massive libraries. Then I realize that the DOM is another standardized technology that structures the web. And of course as I gained more insight and got introduced to more "technology" the clearer it became. I'm just glad we have so much selection in terms of this technology. Whether it's a language you want to use, a particular OS, Vm, framework or the plethora of others begging to aid and assist.

I ain't bragging here but help me.
I'm going through a breakup and other physical and mental anxieties.

Every little suggestion will be appreciated .2 -
We are being run in a simulation. But the simulation is physical. We exist as humans being run on the simulation called Earth. Our brains are designed to interface to a hub. This brain power is used to do calculations for a much larger system. The benefit to using biological systems is they self repair and reproduce. This allows the simulations to scale over time.
Another benefit is we are creating all terrain vehicles (humans) for alien consciousnesses. Big foot is an upgraded atv for high mountain ranges.9 -
Am I the only one that feels like the Linux sound driver (alsa) have a more clean sound than the windows drivers? I'm a pianist (at least I'm playing the piano in my free time 😜) and I feel more comfortable with the sound on my Linux. (I use the same physical piano modeling software on both systems)1

I wish there was more dedicated, physical spaces that were tailored to programmers in particular. I know there’s a lot of collectives out there, but it’s hard to implicitly discourage startup fiend management from taking it over it seems like. We should organize more around a common craft. Me in Backend dev contract. Everything worked great because I translated simple themes and worked with modules.
Did some work as full stack to same agency as a favor. Mostly frontend work but ok.
Now being judged as a frontend despite my multiple protests of not being a frontend developer. Nor do I have any interest in improving my skills as one.
It's now affecting my mental health and physical health. Thinking about not renewing that contract. -
So I get it is a trying time right now as most people continue to adapt to a physical distancing world. But it is so frustrating that some teachers can't figure out how to start a video meeting 😑
Makes it really hard to be tested on lectures you can't watch.
Also WebEx sucks! -
You know you are fat when you press random keys with your belly. And right now i can't even reach something without clicking random things with the mouse pad. Welp i guess its time to go on a diet when your weight starts to be an issue for works that doesn't even need any physical activity 😂

You know while people debated race gender immigration abortion social welfare marijuana etc etc and riotes ruined lives and made people dead and or unemployed and homeless we could have focused on what mattered and reduced so much suffering in this country by embracing a few ideas that are somewhat new and eradicate everything from destitution and suspended momentum but also things like excuses for varying forms of physical and psychological child abuse
It sickens me7 -

Spend 1 hour learning to configure networking interfaces via command line on an ubuntu VM for home use.
Can't ping anything.
Double check /etc/network/interfaces, restart box, check loopback interface functions, check physical cabling.
Realize that VM is attached to a separate virtual switch.
Virtual switch is tagged for Vlan 2, connected router is a flat topology.

Got stuck programming the accountability system for an entire State on my own because the IT shop basically refused to do any work. No help testing, no help debugging, no help with collecting and clarifying business rules, barely any help getting access to the data, and then after I had programmed the entire thing they paid a consulting company about 4xs what I was getting for them to port it to SQL and they still haven't gotten it right yet. Nothing like knowing that any mistakes in your code could cost multiple people their jobs to add some additional stress to the situation. It was actually the first time I ever experienced any physical symptoms from stress; and that includes the time when my convoy got attacked with a roadside bomb in Iraq.

What font size do you normally use for programming?
I've been using 12-14px for years, but I switched to 16px for the last couple of hours. Feels weird but I kinda like it.
Sure, you do lose some real estate but it feels like it's way easier for the eyes. Less physical strain == less mental strain, which in turn makes for higher quality code.
Also, selecting stuff is more satisfying, but that's probably just me since I'm weird ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Any thoughts?4 -
I literally don't understand the purpose of a "higher half kernel"
What does it matter where my kernel is mapped in virtual memory?
"It is traditional and generally good to have your kernel mapped in every user process" what the hell does that even mean??
Mapping my kernel into userspace is something is explicitely don't want to do. Like at all. Ever
And in physical memory it matters even less where it is.
I'm so confused right now3 -
Today I started tearing off some parts of the external wall of an old abandoned wooden house, built either in 1860s or 1930s. Surprisingly, the HTML is still very solid, except for the parts it was supposed to rot.
My project is on!!!
While it would be freaking cool to live in a renovated and modernised 150+y old house, a nearly 100y old house is still good enough!
I already imagine myself WFH there...3 -

If it were possible i would make windows punish itself by playing this: https://youtu.be/th4Czv1j3F8 . But this goddamn piece of garbage software refuses to connect to my Ian-network since an hour ago. Why? I have no fucking idea. There are a switch and a repeater between the router but that never stopped wanblows before. And the devices located deeper in my network topology are fine, i also reset everything from the physical connection to "network adapters" in the UX horror they call system settings.
And i'm pretty sure it'll work again in an hour or so for no appearent reason just so this steaming pile of shit code could ruin my afternoon. -
Google Business continues to piss me off. Just because I don't have a physical storefront at which to receive clients for web development doesn't mean I'm not working in a legitimate business. The fact that there's STILL no option to hide my home address from searches for web developers nearby is just inexcusable. And it's not just me. There are TONS of at-home freelance workers who RELY on organic searches to stay afloat. But Google only cares about people who make decisions about how to run their businesses in the way Google finds beneficial.2

Recently I've purchased a new laptop and so far it's working smoothly as I expected.
And yesterday I had a dream in which, laptop was got broken in the middle where the screen gets attached. And there was a last day for replacement as per return policy (idk really whether they allows if laptop got physical damage). But I was trying very hard to get the internet to submit a request for replacement and suddenly I woke up and very first I checked the laptop condition.
Anyway today I'll goto sleep and again will try to place replacement request for my laptop before date get expired.7 -
How someone can think that the best idea to store a vector of physical values, knowing perfectly in which unit measure it needs to be provided for the back end to work, is to couple a vector of strings with the units, is beyond me.

Is it just me or is the Android Storage Access Layer completely fucked up?
All I want to do is upload an image in 3 sizes (one of them 4k, if available), the correct orientation, on devices >= Android 2.1 (yes, including Samsung crap), without 100m of libraries to an S3 bucket and I need a PHD + an Armada of physical test devices to do so? WTF? -
!dev but a parable
I worked at a Walmart Photo Lab with a Fujifilm photo processor. I had a guy ask for his pictures but they weren’t printed, I could see his order but there was no “payload” ( think PO header with no PO lines). He said he ordered 600+ pictures off his SD card, then blew them away because they were ordered.
As I had no physical pictures, there was nothing I could do but say “sorry”. He was mad, but there was nothing I could do.
Moral of the story, verify backups before wiping the system. -
And now just 2 days left for the weekend here...!
Deadline for completing the code successfully have arrived at my Outlook door step.
I'm working hard on this and my physical brain needs rest but consciousness needs brain resources !

Day 26 of starving myself to death challenge. Lost around a kilo yesterday, so no fasting today!
On an unrelated note… WHY does EVERYONE do EVERYTHING wrong? When did the stupid bomb go off and irradiate everyone with stupid rays? Why is every feature of every man-made physical object misaligned? Why is every UI just plain wrong? Why is everyone so damn stupid?5 -
Microsoft is responsible for protecting the Office 365 physical and virtual infrastructure and ensuring availability. Although Microsoft addresses certain security threats, it cannot prevent all malicious threats. Businesses are responsible for protecting their data. This means that if a business’s Office 365 data is compromised or corrupted, it is not Microsoft’s job to restore the data outside of the Software Licensing Terms. To protect data, businesses need to make sure they have office 365 disaster recovery and recovery plans in place2

1) After many years of development the thing that grew the most is my capability to troubleshoot much more easily most issues, both physical or virtual, with greater enjoyment from such accomplishments.
2) The power to create something from nothing is a great feeling, especially if you keep on personal projects and most of your dev passion you keep it outside the working environment.
3) Career paths can easily be opened in case you live development as an infinite cycle of adaptation and improvement. -
Sometimes I wonder we make too much or at least the devs at corps.... (Not a bad thing...)
But compared to everyone else like chefs, teachers, builders, scientists, etc that actually need to revert physical labor... We just push buttons all day or half the day...
Just looking over this month's income... Basically only spent 10%...

LVM
WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP
It's so precious that when it detects an existing mdraid signature, it just *won't* let me create a physical volume over it!
No matter that I run pvcreate with double-force switch.
It doesn't matter that the system doesn't even have a single MD device defined (Which can be easily checked in /proc/mdstat OR by checking the /dev subsystem)
I *hate* commands that are trying to be more clever than the admin sitting behind the keyboard.
Sure, leave this as the default behavior (It could save a lot of people's data I bet), but BLOODY HELL GIVE ME A SWITCH TO OVERRIDE THE CHECK YOU DUMBASS.

You know it can be said that all our faculties have been developed from a hodgepodge of codeveloping chemical and physical processes
Consistently being reduced to survival only scenarios greatly diminishes the smartest of us
I mean I watch these people glut themselves on betraying their young but what else defines them ? They just wear the skin of the prior generations but they have none of the core attributes
If you ask me they have no core attributes worth mentioning and they’ve made me simple too
And why do they expect the sacrifice of actual life for the one thing that it combined with that life would remove all the problems ? Don’t get it -

You know @otokolo reminded me of a gripe of mine regarding a doomsday fallback
Why has no one taken advantage of the considerable reduction in physical space required for storage and put a copy of Linux on ROM on a motherboard loaded with compilers and an ide ? i dug up the undocmented fdisk thing and here it is https://youtu.be/th8wOjigxwU
on DOS 6.22 it just partitions it immediately, on Win98 it updates drive letters and immediately formats it as FAT32 if a partition is defined as being bigger than 2GB
syntax is as follows
FDISK <physical drive number, 0 being unused> /pri:<primary partition size> /ext:<extended partition size> /log:<logical partition size>
