I go poke around to see what i can do, and after some research i see the problem. The search bar was taking 20-60s to load what was sometimes 16 objects.

The client was using a prestashop with the default search engine. 175000 products were registered. NO WONDER IT'S FUCKIN SLOW.

Please stop making web applications where ALL state is saved in cookies. If I make a search and select a result, why the hell are the search parameters not in the address bar, but rather in a bloody cookie, and why when I select a result is this page not identified by a unique address? Rather saved in a COOKIE. This makes having multiple tabs open pretty useless.

I plan on making a proxy for my home network. Whenever you make a Google search, it will search it on duckduckgo and return the same results, but look as if it were google. Will people notice the difference?

I am always shocked how many people at work are not able to use Google efficently. No matter if experienced developers or graduates. They are not able to limit search results to a certain period of time, search in certain pages, for certain file types and so on. EVERY FUCKING search result gets clicked, although you can already see in the preview that it's absolute crap and not relevant at all. I could cry sometimes and the worst part is, that many of them don't want any help or suggestions.

Youtube needs detection and a filter option to let users remove those vids from search results.

Features suggestions:
1. When we type @ in the comment section it'll be nice to have autosuggest of users as we type. This will help not closing the comment and checking the spelling again and again.
2. Search available on basis of tags. Type in a tag you want to search about and get all rants/questions with that tag.

If you are a web developer, consider using proper page titles.

Page titles are one of the most basic elements of a web page and yet websites often fail to make proper use of them.

Without a proper page title, your user does not have an accurate idea of what page is in the tab without having to open the tab, which gets tedious if many tabs are open. With a proper page title, an instant glance on the tab does suffice.

Some sites only put in their site name or something like "Search - Site Name" without including the search query in the page title, or "User profile - Site Name".

An example of this is, disappointingly, archive.org. As thankful as I am for the Archive, they could make better use of page titles to make browsing their library more convenient. While they use proper page titles on item pages (including both title and author!), they use non-descriptive titles on their 2023 search feature (downgraded from lightweight static HTML+AJAX to a JavaScript app) and user profile pages.

The user name of a profile or a search query and ideally a page number should be in the page title so a browser tab with a search can be found faster and can also be seen on social media sites that auto-generate preview cards with page titles.

Descriptive page titles also improve your search engine ranking! You surely don't want to miss out on that, do you?

So, today I wanted to program a bit and, after reading the last chapter, I want to see what I able to do.

When I was in college I was approached by an entrepreneur whose "search engine" idea consisted of scraping the search results of Google and posing them as his own results (after a little shuffling and filtering). Needless to say I declined.

If you take any search phrase and search on Google or Bing you will get millions or billions or results. But if you go to the last page enough times it will drop down to a total of like 200 results. I am unsure on other search engines as they make it difficult to jump ahead in the search (only provide "next page"). I was going to the next page of results in Brave search engine and it came up with a "are you human" test. Like nobody is going to search more than a few pages. This definitely makes me feel like in am in the Truman Show.

Trying to make use of Google Maps. Search results are always sorted by "most relevant" by default, instead of by distance. Always I switch to distance, next search goes "most relevant" instead, which should be labelled "most irrelevant" instead, as it seems to be an excuse to show a list with promoted businesses not only far away, but often unrelated to my actual query. Wasn't Google supposed to be some sort of search engine experts? or at least the lesser evil of search engines? Oh wait, no, they're actually an advertising company, and it shows. Fuck you, Google. When you are in Visual studio and you want to find something and you do ctrl+f and type in your search and hit enter and realize that the search location was set to "Entire Solution" 😖😖😖

I had a coding interview with Amazon. I had to implement a depth-first search algorithm with no prior experience while 2 devs watched me code on a collaborative IDE. To make it worse, the connection was terrible on the conference call and one of the interviewers had a very thick accent. I barely understood what they wanted me to do until I typed out:

Breadth-first search || Depth-first search?

Yeah, I didn't make it to the next round. :(

It turned out to be way worse. You search for something with a slightly viral keyword, and it only gives you results for the keyword as if you didn't ask it anything else.

Bing is not much better either IMO.

Are we just getting too used to neat answers given by chatGPT, or are the search engines actually being worse this year?

Search some code in Stack overflow, copy/paste on the production project.

Is it just me or does the search find a very limited set of rants for everyone? Maybe it finds only the most recent ones?

Improvement request: if search doesn’t return anything the search text is erased. It’d be nice if it didn’t so we can amend our search more easily.

What is it about long winded articles for a two second one click solution?

In a review meeting with a client, someone asks the PM to Google something while she's presenting. Her steps:
1. Go to the company intranet home page
2. Click on "useful links" in the navbar
3. Click on "Yahoo" on the list
4. Type "Google" in the Yahoo search
5. Search for the term.

Is it just me or has the usefulness of Google search been SEO'd to death? At this point only Bing and even freaking Brave Search are providing results that are related to what I'm looking for. The DEVRANT SEARCH could be improved.
Often wrong results are on top, because the algo accepts 1 different character and tags have no priority.

Example: I clicked on the tag "hangover".
Among the top results there were rants with "handover" and "hannover" (German city).
The first rant with the tag "hangover" was at position 18

Wouldnt the search result be better with another logic?
Priority 1: Tags with exactly the same word
Priority 2: Rants with exactly the same word
Priority 3: Tags with similar words/expressions
Priority 4: Rants with similar words/expressions

But if I search rants with the search pattern "$", the search returns no results.

I guess this has something todo with $ as a special character ;)

So we have records that can have any of a bazillion different reference numbers associated with them. No big deal. Everyone does right?

Our customer's love to run reports and so we have this one option for "just look at a hell of a lot of reference numbers". I call it the 'fuck all' search.

Really it is just there to find something that you don't know where a rando string or number might be in the record and just want to do a "fuck all" search across a number of likely fields to find it... and then presumably you'd be an adult and refine your search from there. LOL yeah right...

Customers get lazy and include that stupid option in their reports and we get a lot of.

Customer: "I always run this report (that includes the fuck all search) and now it isn't working. I want records that have ID 2222."

Me: "Yeah well that was only working because you were rando typing '2222' in like several fields and it would find those .... but now you quit doing that so it won't find them. If you want ID 2222, click the drop down and search by 'ID'. That will find it right away."

Customer: "But I want to just search by 'fuck all search' to find it..."

Me: "But then you get all these other records too right?"

Customer: "Yeah but I just delete them out of the spreadsheet ... "

Me: "Look watch this <screen share> there, look all records with an ID of 2222 and no more extra records you need to delete!!! How great is that?"

Customer: "But why do I have to do it this way now, I want to do it the old way..."
