Me: *busy doing dev stuff with my laptop*
Sis: *looks at my to-do stickies* Hey, what's Log4j?
Me: *without looking away from my screen* it's a library.
Sis: oh, cool! Where is it? Do you have a membership?
Me: Ha-Ha. This is going on devRant.2 -
Kid(age: 17): What kind of programming do you do?
Me: Well, I started writing scripts in Python, but in the last few months I moved to IOS development, so like making apps.
Kid: So you write scripts for phones?
Me: Not exactly—
Kid: Do you know what jailbreaking is?
Me: Yeah.
Kid: So do you jailbreak stuff?
Me: No—
Kid: Oh so you don’t really do programming.
:’(18 -
Mom: You should do stuff with blockchain.
Me: Why, I don't believe in blockchain on the long run.
Mom: You should start believing in blockchain and you should start using it for all your stuff.
Me: Mom, i really appreciate that you are trying to help, but why are you saying this? My projects have zero to do with blockchain.
Mom: Blockchain is the future, because the media said so.
Me:...13 -
When you planed to do some coding for your self on weekend and can only sleep and do dumb stuff. Because you know it's a weekend.1
-
Client/Friend : "Hey bro, can you make something like [a popular social website]?"
Me : "Sure man, but I do need some money to pay for the hosting and other stuff"
Client/Friend : "What's a hosting?"
...10 -
My dad showed me one of his old notebooks from like 1980 or something and it was all handwritten FORTRAN stuff he used to do. Wow... We've come a long way.5
-
"Do you easily get offended?"
"We have a bro culture here. [Some other stuff and examples] So do you think you can fit in here?"
"Tell us about a time you had to communicate with people who are not as technically capable as you."
I can remember more but cba tbh.11 -
Idea:
What about creating a virtual-devduck?
A duck on the bottom of the screen that sometimes does weird stuff and says something so you can talk to her and try to debug
I want to do this but I don't think it's possible with Java :(28 -
> be me
> create profile in dating app because pandemic rules make meeting people at irl events impossible
> match with cute girl
> start to talk about interesting stuff
> mention being a software developer
> her: 'pls help me I have a not activated windows 10 on my laptop and can't do stuff since the last update'
> fml20 -
Decided to update my rooted Oneplus One...
Everything worked on the first try without even having to do a bunch of reboots...
Hate it when weird stuff like that happens.2 -
Have to do a programming task in 6 days, for an internship I applied for.
Have no clue how to do it. Guess I'll have a nice week learning stuff 😁5 -
Supervisor: let's automate this stuff
Me: great! let's do it to last and future proof it. So, as changes happen we can implement in-place upgrades efficiently without taking the system down
Supervisor: well let's not get too crazy1 -
I feel sad for some of my officemates. They are required to go to office today due to client support stuff, and it's a Sunday. They should be resting, be with their family/love ones/pet/bed, playing games, or whatever they want to do on a rest day. :(8
-
I've got an Arduino now and I was building lights the last weeks to understand the coding. But when it comes to use full stuff I could do my mind is empty. Do you have any suggestions for me?
.
.
I know there have to be FUCKs in a good rant. So I will miss use the tags...13 -
Worst part of being a developer?
Everyone thinks you want to freelance a website for them...
Even when you're not a web developer
What do you do?
I write software.
Oh so you're good with computers and stuff?
Yeah
That's p sweet, can you build me a site?
No. 😃3 -
Interviewer: Sell me this pen
He: Hey do you want to buy this pen ?
Interviewer: No
He: You might need it to write stuff
Interviewer: No, I don't need it.
He: Ok, no problem.. Bye
Interviewer: What are you trying to do?
He: Trying to be a part of a company that doesn't sell stuff to people they don't need or want ..
Interviewer:
He:
Interviewer: Please give my pen back..7 -
Typical conversation between my parents and me
Parents: Can you make stuff?
Me: Make what?
Parents: The thing you do all the time.
Me: "Computer stuff"?
Parents. Yah...
Me: Well, yes, why?
Parents: What can you do?
Me: Well, I know C# the most...
Parents: Can you then make software like Facebook, Twitter, etc?
Me: Well, I can, but that will take a lot of time.
Parents: You should really make something and make money.
Me: Ok. (goes into my room, and turns on laptop)
(a few monents later....)
--[[CHORUS START]]--
Parents: U DOIN COMPUTER???
Me: Uh-huh.
Parents: When did I said to do "Computer stuff"?
Me: Well, you said to rest.
Parents: But I never said to do your "Computer stuff"!
Me: But you said to rest. For an hour!
Parents: WHY U SHOUT AT ME!!!! TURN OFF THAT **** NOW!
Me: Ok.... (turns off and opens C# book immediately)
Parents: What's that?
Me: C# book
Parents: What's C#?
Me: Programming language.
Parents: Where can you use it?
Me: Make stuff.
Parents: Like what?
Me: (lists my personal projects)
Parents: Show me.
Me: (turns on the computer and shows one of it)
Parents: Good. (leaves)
--[[CHORUS END]]--
Me: (deep breath) Can I FINALLY use the computer?
--[[CHOURS]]--undefined coding when can i get the time first world problems money does not fall from the sky parents conversation9 -
I feel bad when I commit too often, especially for little stuff. I'm afraid people will think I just do it to get a higher number of commits :/11
-
Snippet of an overheard conversation today:
"LOL maths beyond basic arithmetic is so dumb. No-one needs pythagoras, trig, calculus or any of that crap unless they have some unholy desire to find the geometric properties of their sandwich."
"What do you want to do when you leave school then?"
"Something to do with AI. That stuff is really cool."
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️8 -
Windows is open sourcing their tools slowly to attract more people. Its like trying to do all those stupid stuff to get your girl.
you just never get her.
#loner_life #windows4 -
To whom it nay concern,
Merry Christmas (yeah...we do that stuff on the 24th, here in Germany) and happy holidays.
Yours truly,
Me, myself and I
😊6 -
Can't believe I spent the past 2+ hours looking for; and customizing a color theme for my code editor (... again) when I have a shitload of stuff to do :(4
-
This kind of random stuff happens to me often:
*comes home from going out*
*wants to sleep badly*
Brain: heyyy, why don't we take a look at some vps discounts!!!
Me: please, I want to FUCKING sleep.
Brain: oh come on...
Me: pls don't do this to me..
Brain: But vps discounts...
Me: oh FUCK YOU, I'll go look up some stuff.
My brain can be weird and annoying.8 -
Who cares about living longer, with more money and not bzing ill? If I had a wish I'd get my oN room of hyperbolic time so I'd get to finish what I want and do stuff I know it'd take YEARS to do (i.e. read everything DC and Marvel ever released)
But most importantly, I would be able to finish my side projects.5 -
DatePickers should be a W3C standard handled by the browser. We shouldn't rely on JavaScript plugins to do this basic input stuff8
-
A pm once told me that the whole point of managing someone was to give them the stuff you don't want to do.
From that project I learned that he didn't like to take responsibility for his own fuck ups.1 -
My last job application letter was literally: “I saw your add and since you don’t do web stuff I decided to apply”
Hired1 -
Oh god, where to start? It is my job to fight against devs that likes to breaks RFC, do stuff stupidly or just do not actually know how stuff works7
-
My family supported me all the way. Not per definition by buying me stuff but they always 'pushed' me to do what I love doing and I am now doing that!
But, I'm a huge privacy/cybersecurity freak and my family mostly migrated to Signal and stuff like that so that's awesome :)1 -
UI Is the bane of my existence. I'm an embedded programmer i mainly deal with drivers daemons low level stuff no UI involved. why do they keep assigning mobile apps to me man ! #FML6
-
You aren't qualified to be lead dev he says while calling, emailing, and texting daily to ask me how to do high level developer type stuff. Seriously.
-
I've been taking a bunch of boot camp 'entry' type tests to do some research for the school I'm building - and these things are strange. To qualify, some of them want to make sure you can do basic algebra and others want you to be very comfortable with higher-order JS function type stuff - and then you get questions like this : /4
-
Today on our CS class we worked in Excel. We had to do some functions and stuff and my classmate said:"Can i use my calculator?".5
-
Have you ever been so motivated to do stuff that you lost the motivation because of too much motivation that sucked up all the energy you had to be motivated?7
-
When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1
-
Got an assignment for my OOP class, looked at it, laughed, "haha this is baby stuff I could code this by farting on the keyboard"
Wrote 400 lines of code without debugging
🙃.... Why do I do this to myself?3 -
I clearly remember when my boss, shortly after founding the company, told me that we won't add support for $IE_version < 11 in frontend stuff. Guess what I had to do a lot since those 2 years I'm there...5
-
Do some cool shit that I’ve always wanted to do.
- learn more about machine learning and computer vision
- learn C / C++ / rust
- learn embedded systems / programming
- learn more EE centered stuff3 -
I'm not knowledgeable when it's about Linux, so when I want to do some stuff I always have to take a f*cking lesson and a half. Could someone please explain to me what Docker is?16
-
At the ranters who use Vim as their primary IDE. How do you manage to get some autocompletion working?
I want to be one of the cool kids and use Vim for coding but I am so used to a good autocompletion like the one IntelliJ offers.
I want to be able to browse through every method of an object or function of a module. But Vims build in engine sucks ass and YouCompleteMe doesnt seem to work that good either (only tested with Javascript, Typescript and Elm). They dont show all the correct identifiers but they do show some other random stuff.
How do you guys manage to be productive? How do you make it show only the usefull stuff?9 -
Oh Apple, f*ck you. I dont want to use safari.
If I do everything in Firefox, why do I have to change to Safari if I just want to learn about ARKit STuff...4 -
You will have a first phase when you will do everything on your own.
Then you will have a second phase when you will totally rely on external libraries found on the internet.
Then you will have a phase when you will use libraries only for the stuff you don’t want to bother because, never reinvent the wheel but do not get too much tech debt.
Then the hyper simplification phase when you will refuse modern solutions for good old robust stuff as they used to do back then
Then I don’t know… but I am getting interested in agriculture
Anyway try always to learn new stuff and don’t be afraid of change as it is normal. And learn other skills not related to code, those will keep you alive1 -
Protip: don't drink gin and try to install stuff on a client's NAS while logged in as root.
Thank god I changed my mind and decided to do this another time...2 -
Well done firefox for not implementing some stuff from ES6, because you decided to do so. Isn't the releases of EcmaScript considered to be standards? I'm a Firefox fan, but damn, Chrome is so much more advanced.7
-
Dfox and trogus I'd love to subscribe but are there going to be additional payment methods? As in, at least some people on here do not have Google play services and although i do, that's solely for notifications, I'd love to remove that stuff.20
-
"What's your degree in?"
Electrical Engineering.
"So, you do coal stations and stuff?"
Nope. I look for powergrids to optimise with the help of Neural Networks.3 -
Background:
New guy on our team, deadline coming up. I bring him into a meeting room, explain what the project is about, quick run down of the code. Then spent a while explaining what we have to do next, gave him a piece to do, took a piece to do myself.
The fuck up:
A few days / week pass by and I ask to check on his progress. Fucktard decided an hour after the meeting that it would be easier for him to use a different database than what the project was using and decided he wanted to work on some other feature instead.
My stuff was dependent on his stuff, so not only did he not do his work but stopped me from delivering mine.
Let’s just say there was a few stern words in a meeting room shortly after that.1 -
I just got an SSD! Now I can do stuff super fast- oh wait I have to reinstall Windows and Debian... 😨6
-
How do working professionals find time to learn new tech? Work all weekdays... Shit tired on weekends this happens for few months and suddenly kids are b building ai and stuff and u just feel dumb.. how do you guys do it? How do you stay on top of the game?7
-
Dad: “Cool! Now you can sit around like you always do!” 😑
Mom: “So you are programming the computer? Can you show me how to do x on my computer/iPhone?” Except it’s the same questions every single time... She never learns...
Brother: Talks to me about jailbreak stuff
And of course, they all ask me how to fix things on different electronics.3 -
I guess most of the things I do are a bad dev habit?
From not commenting stuff to commenting in German to copying stuff without looking at it, procrastinating a lot, not starting at all, bad naming of variables, bad... Everything? Idk, I have a lot to learn4 -
A big company owned by a bald cynical guy selling stuff especially during the black Friday offered me a job, all I had to do is 5 interviews.
So I found real job instead.3 -
Telling my mom how to do computer stuff is like programming, I need to outline every fucking step. Yes this includes file management.1
-
When you stop freelancing because clients don’t spend enough to keep you making enough money to continue freelancing for a living. But then they come back begging you to keep working on their stuff because suddenly they have enough money and a need and because they can’t seem to find anyone who can do it as good as you did. But even with them handing you new cash money all you want to do is not do that stuff anymore. But money.3
-
- Dual boot to windows.
- Do some stuff.
- 2% Battery left.
- Alright, shutdown.
- Windows prepare to update.
Me: Fuck... forgot about Creator update.
(Run boy run -> to the AC adapter)
(Freeze windows for too long....)
(Mostly use Arch) -
Why do all developers that seem to know their stuff drinks, smokes or both? Is it some sort of a trade secret?27
-
a) when i wanted to write a twitter client for the console
b) when i automated my job that i had at a school event
just the ability to do such stuff is very exciting to me. -
Been asked to do things out of my area, like print stuff, make videos, institutional document guides, etc etc etc1
-
My parents think everything i do on the computer is magic. Theyre too scared to toich any of my stuff because I convinced them it records live video and biometrics to my phone.
Sometimes life is good -
Hey guys. I have nothing to rant about the last few weeks.
I want to buy a book about advanced php. Cool ninja stuff I could do on backend... Do you have any suggestions for me?1 -
It's 23:00 and I'm too fucking tired to do anything but sleep.
How the fuck you people stay up all night and even develop cool stuff while doing so is beyond my understanding.4 -
Here we go, classes are starting again tommorow, tried to do most of the things on holiday, delegated school project stuff to the project members and made a planning with them...
and still nothing happend on their part in a timespan of 2 weeks and the deadline is in 5 days and A FUCK LOAD OF STUFF STILL HAS TO BE DONE AKA I guess I have to do their part too in 5 days..
*going into caffeine induced rage insane mode for 5 days*1 -
Windows 10 upgraded yesterday. Went to do a bit of work today, loads of stuff for my development environment wasn't working. The reason? The Windows 10 upgrade completely wiped my Users path and System path env variable.3
-
Like visual basic? Go for it. Scratch? Get stuck in. Like playing around with HTML/CSS/JS? Ignore anyone who laughs. Want to learn C++? Awesome!
The best thing you can do as a kid is get exposure to it, be creative, be curious, work out how to do stuff, and get stuck in. It's not the time in your life to listen to anyone who's discouraging. Then, whether you take this up longer term or not, you'll have had some fun, created some cool stuff, and have a good grasp of some basic concepts.2 -
Sometimes it's uncomfortable for me to code anything because all I do is based on other stuff that is based on other stuff and so on.
Am I truly a creator when all I do is putting the puzzle pieces together so it looks unique?
I actually never honestly go beyond "modding".. Why do I always have to rely on other stuff working? And other stuff continuing to work for the following decade?
I thought it's only the case for software/web/etc but apparently most hardware projects are stuffing bought things together.
Music is stuffing chord combinations and melodies together.
It all goes on like that. -
Every week in my intro to information security class we are asked about what security stuff has gone down in the past week. Equifax is making it incredibly easy to not have to do much research.1
-
today was shit. I'm full of stuff to do at work, we're extremely understaffed, no one will stop pestering us, I'm failing at doing my tasks and our stack is extremely useless for the stuff we're required to do. on top of that I'm in physical pain and i had a test. oh and my computer is dead so i have to sort that as well. fuck. I'll just eat sushi and pass out. tomorrow will be worse.3
-
Discussion Thread.
With all the frameworks and libraries available and game engines to develop games, its now easier than ever to build stuff.
With this in mind, do you think its necessary to have a core knowledge of how stuff work under the hood? Or is it okay to build upon and develop new stuffs on the foundations available today?5 -
In the first two years at my school, I'm gonna do much stuff in the programming lessons that I already know. That's going to be boring. Very boring.10
-
Is it just me, or are web chatbots actually really annoying and way too intrusive. It's like "omg look guys we have a ChatBot, we can do really cool technical stuff!" If a ChatBot can't ease my oversized heap of depression, I do not want to talk to it.6
-
Anyone have the experience where you are learning a new programming language and you are eager to do stuff with it but you need to use another one for your job? So frustrating!2
-
!rant
Do you also sometimes have these nights in which you don't want to sleep but instead want to learn new stuff?
Right now I have one of these nights again and I have spent the last 1:20h watching a lecture by a German professor about cryptography. Man I can't wait to leave fucking highschool behind and go to university to learn stuff I am interested in.5 -
Person: "Can you speed up my computer? Don't delete anything though."
Me: "Your hard drive is at 99%... you need to get rid of some stuff."
Person: "Can't you do it with out deleting anything?"
Me: "We can move it to a cloud service..."
Person :"No, that won't work. How will get my stuff back?"
Me: "Nvm..."2 -
It is now 12pm.... Time to get up... Now what should I do today?
Bachelor's life at 30... Dunno if I should be happy or sad that there's no one nagging me to do stuff...11 -
So apparantly at the company i work at someone was able to use the remote monitoring a comptetitor set up for their automation stuff they had on the same site as we did. Apparantly they use just as shitty passwords as we do and rely on the network being secured enough by the IT guys. And since our stuff is in the same network as theirs. Well...2
-
Today marks the day that i finally get to do stuff on a production server.
Its just installing the elasticsearch cluster. But i still feel honored by the trust im given even tho im still an apprentice.6 -
Anyone here has an idea of a project to do in Java and Spring (REST stuff) ?
I'm out of ideas :/ and I really want something to build in Java and keep me busy for a while.7 -
do you guys think it's dangerous territory to do something you weren't asked to do at work?
like, i know i can improve some minor inconveniences, but they are not the priority. on the other hand, we always have a bigger problem and the little stuff gets left behind. idk, i just want to leave things better than i found them9 -
Reasons to dislike our work VPN when working remotely: Forces all traffic to be routed through it, not only the important internal stuff.
For some reason, I just dislike having everything I do potentially recorded and/or at least slowed down.13 -
probably gonna have to do with environmental software certification (optimizing for energy reduction, that sort of stuff)15
-
Oh gosh, if you like building stuff, how do you find a job that is actually building stuff instead of dealing with software complexity bs, bureaucracy, red tape, processes to justify other people’s jobs… 🤦♂️8
-
Ugh! So boring writing the same thing over and over! So instead I wrote a ruby script to generate some C# code for me!
Honestly...I just make excuses to do stuff with Ruby 😂3 -
I always had little time to code. But since I have my server I just have admin related stuff to do. It's been a few days now since I have seen my editor for the last time.
Hate that.1 -
Small rant for today: why in God's name do some people feel the need to ignore the conventions of the frameworks THEY chose to use for theyr projects, and start just throwing stuff randomly around the whole codebase?
ARRRGGHHHH...
Phew...all better now :)1 -
Do online courses/certificates actually mean something to companies/universities?
Coursera courses? OpenClassrooms? Stuff like that.5 -
For as long as the world needs computers to do complicated stuff, it'll need good, skilled developers to tell them what to do.
Good, skilled developers don't come easily or cheaply, so they can command a hefty premium, both in terms of job perks & salary.
So putting that together - a well paid, good job in a reasonably stable field? Sign me up.1 -
I just wish I could make my living by doing stuff that I love and not by doing stuff that other people have to do to make a living so they can do what they love.2
-
Was working on a game and I hated having to hardcode stuff I wanted to add so I started splitting it into external json files but by the end (and to an extent still learning it) learnt how to do mod support and simple user generated content, really cool stuff to learn about.
-
My boyfriend: "how do you do <some random stuff> on Windows"? After I tried to answer: "Why I ask you about Windows"? Me: "Yeah! Why people still asks me about Windows"? Why?3
-
Something you can do even if the (windows) PC is locked. Win+i to bring forth the funny menu (if I recall correctly). From there you can do stuff like invert colours and zoom extremly1
-
Algorithms teacher: I don't know how to work this thing. (computer) ... Students constantly have to go up front and help him do basic computer stuff. Even worse, he types with two fingers! Why education system must you suck so bad???6
-
This kind of stuff is what causes developer's to loss their mind. If you have to write a comment saying do not use a function, REMOVE IT!1
-
Why doesn't Twitter have a public API without authentication for simple stuff, such as reading tweets. One can do that without logging in on the website, why shouldn't code be able to do it.5
-
---12.018 HE----
I want to
- finish my A-Levels
- play less & do more
- work on side project
- learn lots of new programming stuff
- have a great time (making my gf happy <3)1 -
so I installed nginx on my server this week. I feel like a giddy kid now installing one self hosted app after another. REVERSE PROXY ALL THE THINGS!
Right now I have reviewboard and drone (drone.io) installed. Any of you guys have suggestions for other cool stuff to try out? Mostly interested in something with a web API that can do fun stuff :)3 -
Refactoring is like dating. You have to remember stuff, maybe you're insecure and you may have to overcome yourself to actually do it.
But when it works out, it's great.2 -
Just wondering, what kind of music do you listen to when you're programming ?
I usually listen to trance when I really have to focus on coding, helps to clear my head, but I do listen to other stuff when i'm working at a more relaxed pace.10 -
@dfox, @trogus, would you consider adding the topic for next week to be "Near miss: how I almost lost all my code/data"?
It sould be fun, and people can also learn something. Like what not to do, how to recover and how to prevent this kind of stuff...1 -
Throughout the years I slowly bought more Arduino boards and stuff. But then RadioShack closed shops in my country. So my inventory has remained relatively small.
But now I have been given a ton of stuff. Boards, sensors, wires. More than what I know what to do with.
Someone, please give me a cool project to make.8 -
- Got one more section to rewrite from this thesis and I'll be done. (except for stuff after review)
- Have zero ass to sit down and actually do the final trims.
Smh.3 -
"I used to be a developer back in the days"
yep ... maybe this is true - but the fact is: I'm the developer and you aren't - do your fucking work and don't bother me with stuff you don't understand ...1 -
You're working on a project, your boss has set you tasks to complete. You complete all the tasks and make pull requests of all the work you've done. Your boss is busy and you don't know what to do next? What do you do? Is it unethical to work on personal projects in work hours, because you're not being paid for that? How do you find other stuff to do?10
-
By trying to do my best. Doing a good job makes me feel good and gives me even more motivation.
Also by trying something new every time. Either by using new library, new approach do to things or whatever. Just to keep stuff exciting. -
I am not even at our office yet the PM already sent us multiple emails asking us to do trivial stuff like update excel sheets, file reports, etc... WTF!? Can't you fucking wait till I get to work!?1
-
"Most ignorant ask from a PM or client?"
I'm going to just say generally any ask with "a lack of effort".
1. Stuff like urgent / angry emails about stuff that already exists... like man if you're going to be a jerk in the email at least look first ...
2. Requests that aren't thought through. "I need X to happen." , "So you want X to happen?", "Oh gawd no, only when Y and Z and ... some other vague stuff!"
3. Requests with incomplete sentences... hard to do a thing without a verb or noun or both.3 -
"XYZ is an API that allows you to throw a bunch of stuff at it, and it will generally do the right thing" - best documentation ever!1
-
How about we contribute to a Devrant custom character creator. Like we create stuff for ourselves and others? Or adding more details. Like we can have a separate form for that.
What do you think?
@dfox @trogus6 -
!dev?
It's getting cold now over here and all I want to do is sleep... I have no motivation to do anything useful (dev, useful reading) either, just binge watch TV...
So wondering how do you actually get shit done (stuff you should do but don't have to do)? Maybe it's the food related as well?7 -
Why broken stuff is allowed through the door?
My Ubuntu, my Bluetooth headsets, Jira, my latest Google pixel, eCommerce shop where I purchase stuff everything lately seem to be full of bugs.
It seems like nobody cares about the quality of software pushed to production. Everyone is so quick to push those tickets into "released".
Fuck you, managers, shareholders, scrum masters, seniors who push developers to do stuff quickly rather than correctly.3 -
So I had this awesome idea yesterday, and I was really in to it and all, so before I started working on it I googled some stuff, and while looking for something (how do you generate session cookies) I just found out that somebody did EXACTLY what I wanted to do. Now I'm sad.7
-
I'm so tired I can't even do my personal stuff that I wanted to do instead of actually working. But I'm getting paid anyways. Working is kinda cool1
-
i dream of having a working dev and test environment
or being good enough to have my own stuff working
i don't go out of my way to fuck around with any of it, i just want to do my work, clock in, clock out8 -
Got a new job, joining next week, feeling scared and wondering how my co-workers will be, and if I will be abke to do assigned work properly ! I know the stuff but still..3

I need help, I have a very small attention span and motivation in general, I only do stuff when under pressure. Does anyone have any tangible suggestion on how to improve that, generally but even more so in coding, I'm at the beginning still but I do have a learning appetite but I just can't get myself to do shit!
Share some of that super motivation and learning tips!
Thx!18 -
Here's my new function:
/**
* Output Debugging information and Die
*
* @return hopefully
*/
public function odd()
{
//stuff here
}
Hopefully, you don't have to ODD too much when you write code... like I have to do right now
fuck sakes1 -
Trying to make a deadline, waiting for more info from an analist so I can implement the science stuff correctly
Today I receive the email with the info I need. Email is cc'ed to the client. And it starts with complaining about me not having implemented the science stuff. The info I need is attached in this email. Arghgh, how am I supposed to do that if I don't have the information I need.
Apart from that she was testing in the production environment. How do you work with people like this.
But hey, I just got my devRant stickers ;) -
So we just finished moving my stuff to my apartment for the year. I haven't been so happy in ages, to think I'm finally going to have a place with my girlfriend :)
On the other hand, I didn't do shit for my projects today. Again.2 -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
I get the opportunity to talk with a pro today:
"Pro": hey do you know how to use tool X?
Me: well I've used it sometimes for simple stuff but I've always wanted to learn more advanced stuff.
"Pro": let me show you
*repeats the basics that are available in every single online tutorial and are tbh pretty obvious*
Me: yeah I know that but how do you use function A with option B under circumstance C? (Because I've encountered that recently)
"Pro": Oh... emm... I don't know. I don't think you'll ever need that use case tho3 -
find that comfortable spot between
not having a manager and being free to do stuff as u see fit.
and having a dev manager who can take the blame when things go south1 -
I'm trying to convert a legacy .NET Framework web api to .NET Core, the project and its supporting libraries are in awful conditions and to make things worse at a certain point someone has the genius idea of introducing Uncle Bob's "Clean" Architecture into a part of it so stuff which could simply look like this
public string doStuff(string input){
// Do the stuff
return output;
}
becomes a convoluted mess like this
public class StuffDoerRequest {
public string Input{get;set;}
}
public class StuffDoerResponse {
public string Output{get;set;}
}
public interface IStuffDoer {
public StuffDoerResponse Execute(StuffDoerRequest request);
}
public class StuffDoer {
public StuffDoerResponse Execute(StuffDoerRequest request) {
// Do the stuff
return new StuffDoerResponse() {
Output = actualFuckingOutput;
}
}
}
Edit: sorry for the lack of indentation, apparently DevRant trims leading whitespace7 -
My (younger) brother used to be way better than me at programming. He was making all this cool stuff (mainly Arduino).
I learned to program to make cool stuff like him basically. I learned Python to start since someone told me it would be easier to start with (it was).
I made a bunch of small programs (shitty things to help with homework, text based game, etc).
Eventually took programming classes in university.
Now I do C++ for a living. -
Keeping the clients happy is very important but when you have alot of shit to do, being a glorified helpdesk bugs me the fuck out. My inbox is screaming at me: "Please no more... Master please end me!".
-
I'm probably gonna use http://codewars.com instead of doing the dumb C# programs I'm supposed to do in the programming lesson. I'll just do them really quick at home (no challenge whatsoever) and then get to more challenging stuff...2

Why do i keep forgetting the definition of important stuff when i need to explain that shit to my peers

Why is stuff like this on a Tech page?!1 -
My SO always wants to do fun stuff but I just want to sit in my room and program by myself sometimes...5

Why is there so much stuff to learn and know? I just want to be able to do everything myself in a week.8

Use to do backend stuff, today I spent most of the afternoon understanding and fixing a damn jade file. Fuck frontend, I really hate that stuff.
Sorry to all the frontend fellas here, I have nothing against you :P :) -
When you are about to pause your coding-job for one day to do all the stuff you do on your freetime. Like coding. We're super strange people...1

Alright I'm about to flip out so please give me something to program.
JS (web stuff generally)
Python
NodeJS
Just send me stuff to do please16 -
Better ideas:
I love building stuff and when i have something that I'm really into, it's hard to concentrate on the boring stuff i need to finish first.
Sometimes i just need to do what i feel like doing, doesn't matter. No, i won't go to bed, no i can't do the other stuff, i need to do that!1 -
I'm in highschool learning to code, but I already realize that a programmers biggest enemy is TIME! I don't have time do the projects and learn the stuff I want to fucking learn! Because of God Damm School!!3

Usually I play some focus music, say "let's do this!" to my devduck (Dave), and start working on stuff. Oh, and lots of coffee.2

Hey devrant, what do y'all listen to when you're working? What gets you in the zone?
Personally, I listen to a lot of chiptunes, some Opeth, Black metal, 70's, and lately, a lot of Mega Drive. Awesome stuff, but it's admittedly a weird mix. Always looking to find new stuff to listen to.16 -
I've been working in industry for 2-3 months after graduating from CompuSci last year, doing big data stuff surrounded by people with huge amounts of experience. I've learnt a lot but I'm still being overwhelmed by all the stuff I'm being told to do that seems second nature to my seniors and there's not enough time to Google it all and understand it ;____;3

I want to do something data-science-y.
Gimme project ideas, and where can I get the data for it?
Also, not looking for machine learning, just basic data analysis stuff.
I'm bored.10 -
Do you think AWS will still be THE thing within 5 years? Trying to learn REST/cloud/database stuff as a junior dev, but I'm having trouble with the pile of shit documentation.4

MOUSER! If I select ‘In Stock’ in your filter I want to see, who would have guessed, only parts that are in stock! Why do you think I want to see all the stuff that's on order?4

Because of a ridiculous strict server environment (where even PHP was not allowed) he proposed that I could connect over Skype to do my stuff in typo3, which than could be exported to plain html to run on their server.
SSH or even remote desktop would be to insecure.3 -
Do you care about your workplace/employer?
I feel quite a bit of stress, and a good friend of mine told me I "probably do it to myself" (working too hard and/or caring too much)
From him I heard that I care too much about stuff I don't get payed to do.
(Think management and server related stuff while I'm just a web developer)
So my question is either, do you care about what's going on? Do you think nah fuck it? Where do you draw the line?3 -
Hey guys :D So, finally I have to build a website for a service. That means setting up a server and all that stuff...
What servers do you recommend? Also service for DNS?
Thanks :D14 -
My university decided to switch their mailing software to outlook. So no smtp/imap in the future. How am I supposed to do my mailing stuff now? I use older ("non-microsoft") mail clients like mutt or upas? What about standards? Aargh19

Managers hiring process in my mind.
Do you know how to:
Code? No
Pick up the phone? No
Repair stuff? No
Doing photocopies? No
Swipe the floor? No
You are hired!1 -
I hate managing interns at my company more than half of my day goes into solving their silly issues and the rest i work on shitty small stuff. And the worst thing is they get to do all the machine learning and user behavior analysis stuff, in which i have more insight on. Being a full stack developer it sucks managing other devs. 😔5

[Long rant about one of the worst school project I got]
I just saw that post about Lego coding, and it reminds me a project we had to do for high school.
The project was about a robot that will do volleyball services. My group decided with me that I should go on programming the robot since it was my idea to pick that subject to work on. So I started to investigate the robot and the programming software.
This was one of the worst thing si could get. For some reason I didn't find any tutorial about how to program the robot, so I had to test it out. When you don't want to break the robot, that's clearly not the best thing to do.
So what about the teachers? We had 3. Two told me they don't know stuff about this, and one MIGHT know stuff but not how to use the software. Great...
Plus I add that we were asking a teacher some help, being desperate, and literally, he came, made a joke about "how long he didn't play with Lego toys", laughed at his own joke and left. Thank you, that was really helpful while I was worrying about the project that will help us getting my degree, clearly helped us.
So I managed to do something really basic, where you input the direction for the aim with the arrows on the robot, and central button was for shooting. Basically basic stuff. Even not optimal because the robot hit its own screen but a weaker throw wasn't working, so we had to put some protection over the screen and the arm.
Another group of another class were working on the same subject, so we visited them one day to see their stuff.
They made a joystick that was fully operational, with analogic direction input, precise aiming and shooting stuff. The best way to make myself doubt about my stuff.
So we did the presentation and for whatever reason, the other class (not only the other group) got bad reviews of their projects, made by my famous joking teacher, and we got a good review. Didn't understand, but whatever.
So did I learn stuff?
Absolutely not. It was one of the worst pain in the ass to learn the programming syntax and stuff, and when I graduated, I forgot anything concerning programming stuff, my engineering school did all the stuff.
This is some experience you don't forget, the one that don't make yourself grow at all but the effort is real.1 -
STOP FUCKING ADDING MORE STUFF TO THE FREAKING TICKET, the stuff you're asking for me to do doesn't have anything to do with this TICKET, WHY DO YOU INSIST ON DOING THIS FUCKING SHIT!?

I want to start a little website, for my ideas and other stuff but I can't convince myself to use WordPress and I'm kind of lazy to code my website because I'm afraid of security problems... Do you have any advice to make a choice ?12
-
I just saw this:
"can someone convert a PHP code to VB code ? i want to make a small application , *.exe file which can do stuff"1 -
Me: so we've added bunch of features to our app so that everything updates live automatically and you can edit it online and sort and filter and do bunch of other stuff.
Boss: great, how do I export it to xls? -
So exams are coming up and I’m not even ready at all :,,) I Need and want to study But At the same time i want to draw and animate. When i think about these two stuff my brain becomes soggy and very slow so in the end I don’t do anything and it’s bad :,,) I really suck at planning stuff out, do you all have any good schedules that work? :DD3
-
Prediction: One of the things Microsoft will do to GitHub is to remove gh-pages and make sure you can host stuff on azure, since gh-pages only supports html files, so with azure, you can host a server-sided app.1

I started learning how to draw pixel art.
I bought aseprite and will be drawing some 16x16 pixels.
Do you know any useful guides ?
What I’m interested is character drawing and animation.
Drawing objects and nature like trees, boxes and stuff.
General techniques.
I already found some useful stuff about tile sets.
Once I finish drawing couple hundred of tilesets I want to proceed to more complicated stuff.2 -
A very tiny ant got inside one of my external monitor screen. How do I get it out? Also any suggestion to keep ants away from electronic stuff?19
-
Few days after a recent Hackathon, the team I'm on really wants to follow me and build stuff together because, I've built stuff before and they haven't.
How do I handle this fame of mine so that I can get them to become great developers themselves? -
Last week, i discovered the android shell. I hated it, cause I was used to do bash stuff.
Then I saw busybox on my /system/bin.
It saved the day. -
I'm founding a company on machine learning with two others where one of them is an economics guy who decided his work was boring so he did his PhD in Engineering.
He started about three months ago to also invest some time in computer and dev stuff.
As a free software and Linux guy I wanted to get clear about stuff like open sour...
Economics guy: "We should definitely make all of that stuff open source to give back to the community."
Me: I love you. I truely do.
The same thing happened with security, svn etc.
I mean... Well... So unexpected! o.O2 -
"So... you know SQL? Great!! Here, I have this project for you to fix a few things."
"What is it?", you ask... SSIS packages and stuff!
Where do I start??!! -
Honestly, I can't remember. A combo of wanting to do AI and other smart stuff got me here. But like, not even sure I'm there yet.
Always had a knack for robotics tho. That's the only thing that's natural to me.1 -
My fellow devs how many unfinished projects do y'all have I just took a look and I said to myself "John that's a shit ton of stuff you left, to start a shit ton of stuff you'll never finish".
-
This is why I sometimes hate freelance work. You do the stuff and when it's time to pay, ducking clients come up with stories4
-
Gonna start to learn everything I can about Networking Programming. I’ve always wanted to do stuff that requires it so I’m gonna do it. **Also foreshadowing my next project**7
-
I used some kind of application on a compact disc (don't remember what it was) and it asked to reboot in order to do some stuff before Windows loads. Apparently in order to do so it overwrote MBR along with my TrueCrypt loader. Didn't make rescue disc, so lost about 300GB of stuff.
-
Ah yes i also love when you have so much shit to do for college where you are supposed to be studying developer stuff, that you havent written a single line of code in the past week because you dont have time.1
-
So I'm gonna be honest. I dont know git. I do plan on learning it but I'm waiting to learn how to use it. But I'm seeing all this stuff about it on here could someone explain what it is and its function?6
-
And I forgot to do half the metric tonne of stuff I had to do today. I'm not even disappointed anymore.
-
I occasionally wonder if my supervisors think I'm an idiot because I'm constantly implementing stuff the wrong way and asking if I am even on the right track to a solution.
I guess that's what internships are for but I hate being dependent entirely on other developers. I may not know the best way to do stuff but I do know how to do stuff :(4 -
Guyz so I found this climbing gym with a sauna, it's all good and stuff but I wonder if i shouldnt supplement with a side of ashtanga what do u think? Long term i want to improve my surfing15

I am a fresher at this IT giant and I was hired to work in a better role as a dev. They assigned me CMS copy paste stuff and I dont like the work here at all. I am preparing for better opportunities. The lead calls me up after working hours to do some more copy paste stuff. I conveyed frankly that I cant devote time after working hours as I have other studies to attend do. Did I fuck myself or did i do the right thing ?5
-
I love it when a coding assignment is to take the last assignment and do one thing more optimized !!! 😄😄
All the hard stuff is already done and all I have to do is some optimization that I’ve done before in other languages and just have to implement in this one 😄6 -
So its been around a month since I started my internship in this company. Seriously hating it. Most of the people are nice enough..but the work though..I get that since you're not really an IT company then theres no coding and stuff,sure.So, you put me in this 'IT related department' where I basically can't do anything other than be useless until you have documents for me to edit. Really?? The least you can do is just give me something challenging to work with but noooo just copy paste that stuff and change the damn fonts. "Oh you're done already? Pretty fast" well how long do you expect me to do this thing?? The only reason why it would take me a whole day to edit stuff is because your laptop's Word literally restarts itself every minute!!! How the @#$/# do you do anything with this?!!
//its gonna be a long 7 months....9 -
Hiuahuuhaei we can't even coordinate a fucking simple web app and they wants us to use neural networks to identify super fucking hard stuff that is hard even for people to do by hand 😂😂😂😂2
-
Final exam gonna start in 2 days and here I'm contemplating what to do after exams(lots of stuff in mind).
I think everyone go through this and usual dilemma for choosing what to do.
So much to learn, so little time. Smh.. -
I'm at that point again where I question whether I want to still do computer stuff for work, but this time I kinda want to do part-time computer work and part-time physical work instead..
If my body is this bad when I'm not even 30, I wonder how I can do this sedentary job until retirement..3 -
When learning something new, say a new language or framework, do you go through the docs or tutorials, or do you just learn by doing and figure it out as you go?
I like to learn by doing and getting a finished project and start modding and changing stuff. what do you guys do?17 -
Let's asume I wan't to use software X. I notice software X is open source.
How do I validate that said software doesn't do shady stuff?
Is there some kind of platform which lists the audits of each software or alerts the internet if shady stuff happens?
I know about alternativeTo.net, where you can find software alternatives with licencing filters. (Which is great btw) but I'm missing proper validation of open source software...7 -
How to find dark web?
I guess I need tools like tor and VPN and stuff.
But where do I go as a starting point?20 -
Been trying to learn Docker when I hit a brick wall. How do I use nginx reverse proxy + letsencrypt with multiple containers? I only managed to do it with a single container. Using docker-compose or stuff like that I guess?6

News Feed for web dev trends/news?
I don't want these "how to do some weird shit with divi" kinda-news, I want to learn about new trends, frameworks, stacks, tech n stuff, especially new js features. Mainly webdev but other dev-stuff, too.
And if someone has a better reader than feedly for such feeds, pls let me know.3 -
When co-workers act like you have no work to do. So they try to give you more stuff.
Fuck. This. Shit.1 -

How do you guys learn? As we all know, we have a lot of stuff to learn in our field and it's growing and growing and growing. Other than the programming itself, we also have to learn the other stuff like algorithm designs, programming paradigms, big o notations, git, etc. And if you are working, you also need to learn the business rules your clients might have. And if you're unlucky with your job, your boss might even assign you to tasks with a programming language you have zero knowledge about.
So I was wondering, how do you guys balance your life, your family, your studying and your job? And how do you keep your head from exploding with information?4 -
!Rant
What type of music do you guys listen to when coding? Me I like hip hop, electronica, 24/7 hip hop instrumentals on YouTube and some alternative/indie stuff.21 -
Okay so i want to do visualisations, like visualise pi or golden ratio or working if a triple pendulum, trace parabolas and stuff. Which language do i use and why?5

Got rid of my win7, installing LinuxMint "Sarah" later 2nite.
Back to the good stuff. (even though I do like windows)4 -
So I finally managed to hit full disk capacity. 0 free bytes.
WHY DO YOU NEED FREE SPACE TO UNINSTALL STUFF WTF15 -
That feel when you're saving for a laptop and trying to work on a project for a client but your laptop is quite old (3 years and 5 months in my case) and decides to go crazy when for months ago, the same stuff open wouldn't lead to a variety of freezes.
I mean, there's new specs and stuff but spending in the £1-2 grand on a new one (at least one more up-to-date and with better specs) isn't going to happen anytime soon especially with the new job coming soon.
At least, I can do some of the stuff on my phone 😅. -
I decided to get over my pride and just start paying for assets that I don't have the skill, time, or patience to make myself and I have never been more productive or creatively fruitful.
It frees me up to do the stuff I can do instead of spinning my wheels doing the stuff I wish I could do.3 -
What IDE's/Editors do you use for coding?
When it's just one file i use vim. But for more than one file i can't find anything that i like.
VsCode is just ugh and Jetbrains stuff is super bloated
Any good alternatives or should i learn to like vscode/jetbrains stuff?15 -
My flatmate's previous flatmate left this for me. It used to belong to the CS department, but they gave away random stuff they didn't need anymore. What should I do with it?4

Thinking of logging into work to do a side project and learn some new tech.... bc I don't have time to work on it during the week...
And there's no personal use case to do this stuff...2 -
I am looking for a better job, to do that I expand my knowledge by learning new stuff after work. I do this to have a better live, but my relatives pulling me down...
My wife complains that I am always at work, even if I tell her I do programming as a hobby and I learn new stuff to get a better paying job.
In contrary my parents always say that I am lazy bum, because If man doesn't work with his muscles, they don't consider this as a real job.2 -
Working in IT all day at work (not coding), yet I am excited to come back home to code and learn new stuff I don't do at work... Difficult to resist, too much cool stuff out there every day!!!3

every work i'm at, every assignment i do, i have to learn how THEY do things, how THEY think about things, i can't just be doing stuff, i have to be thinking about how THEY want me to do the stuff, how THEY would do it.
... who the fuck am I? how the fuck do I do stuff and think about stuff?
how the fuck would i know?

Why do my parents instantly forget anything they "learn" related to computers?! Like how my mom keeps forgetting how to do stuff in PowerPoint. And especially how she keeps forgetting that "I'm not a PowerPoint expert, I don't use it, and I would have to read and try some buttons just like she should do."1

how do you guys deal with supervisors that don't teach you the ropes? i need to learn some job specific stuff quickly, but i don't get much attention and it kind sucks to step on someone's toes. at this point, going over my immediate superior feels like the only thing i can do...9

sooo, new job. more complex stuff to do. i thought. turns out some project have memory probs. guess what, it's sharepoint! *sigh*... very hard to find the code in trouble.
learn sharepoint and it WILL come back to haunt you!2 -
Just asking a few questions about anyone's opinion, answer whatever you want:
Is self studying your own responsibility and if so, do you prioritize learning stuff you do at work? Do you share it with colleges?
What is your preferred way to study?8 -
I miss functions that do stuff.
Just a simple logic piece that does the stuff it wants to do. Without classes, objects, interfaces, frameworks or configurations.
I mean, yes, wrapping the functions behind the implementation of an indifferent interface is usually a good call.. As long as it stays simple.
But it rarely does, doesn't it?5 -
In the middleschool we have teacher who wasn't very skilled. We were learning about copying files, creating folders, writing in word...
So me and my frend were bored and do other stuff, talk loud and joking.
Teacher than got angry at us and want to punish as. So he made us show, how to creat new folder in explorer. Thinking we would know.
Me and my frend did it in sec. He just stood there in silence and didn't know what to do. We continue to do other stuff. -

Even though my first rant was a rant ranting about rants this is definitely my favorite devForum so far. I'm new to this stuff so I've been checking out a few of them.
Plus I'm learning new stuff. Every time I don't get a joke I head over to Stack Overflow till I do. Probably not the best use of time but it helps to take a break every now and then. -
Right now I have all these ideas in my head that I want to do after my exams are over, but I feel overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I came up with, from finally starting to learn how to create and develop my own website to video editing for a small documentary that I want to do on my city just to train these skills.
If that is not enough, summer is here and I want to do lots of stuff with friends and my gf.
Any ideas how I can manage all of this?4 -

An educational platform that would easily be distributed and used by everyone. (Even the third world countries) This platform would teach not only the conventional stuff that the most of the actual school system do. It would teach and evaluate all kinds of stuff. Music, track some sport stats..etc.

Can't believe I'm about to say this, but:
Systemd-container is a rather cool SysD extension.
It allows me (Root on most servers) to switch to a customer account in a completely new session, setting all the .profile and .bashrc stuff up, so I can do stuff like control their rootless docker, and no longer have to add my SSH key to their authorized_keys file then re-login under their user.
Nice.1 -
That moment you're helping out a colleague with his ticket and stuff isn't working and you ask him.

So I don't even know if I should be mad;
person hired at the same time as me has been given a kind of manager title, they do a lot of logistical (trello, department liaison) stuff, in addition to code. Were they promoted to manager? I'm starting to look at how to get devices to send data to an endpoint for storage and analysis. how the hell do you do backend focused projects for a portfolio??? i feel so uninspired compared to my ideas for showing of frontend skills. backend stuff is just not as flashy by nature, how the hell do I "show off"? my backend chops??? 0_04

> me when angry
" what the fuck you stupid dev stop doing crappy shit"

#!/bin/bash set -e

My dad wants to add security cameras in our home. I kind of want to go ahead and add cool stuff(like automation or something) to our house using this opportunity.
What I am thinking of right now is salvaging an old desktop with an Nvidia GPU to add face recognition and motion detection to the mix. I am also thinking I could get an Alexa echo dot or something similar and hook everything up. Another idea is using owncloud to create my own cloud.
What do you guys think? Any ideas or suggestions? Maybe a cheaper way to do stuff?7 -
People giving advice: Have you told your boss how you didn't like his approach? If you don't tell them they can't improve.
me: No, but it's easier to just find another job than risk getting fired. Another day he asks me to do dumb stuff is another day of wage earned while I'm given permission to put off the more serious stuff -
Some developers just want to annoy other developers
`var IS_DEV = true
if(!IS_DEV) {
//do stuff for production
} else {
//do stuff for dev
}`
Why don't you just do `if(IS_DEV)`...1 -
Because I got paid to do stuff I was already doing for free...
And because business school didn't get me a "guaranteed" high paying job 10yrs also. -
I set up my first git for my internship stuff. I just looked at it and it's so disorganized and weird
anyone know a tutorial for learning how to use git that I can do over the weekend???3 -
Do you make notes for the stuff you learn as a developer,
feel fee to discuss how you do it, like do you write a detailed blog post or write in your notebook6 -
What tools do you use to manage how much time you needed to get stuff done?
Any tool where I can stop time and also add things like had a meeting for 1h and so on.2 -
As experienced developers, how do you do time estimation in spite of things being stuck and new, unexpected, stuff coming at you with no extra time? This has happened to me and it's depressing and frustrating to have to ask for an extension again and again. Plus, the code and tests for it get boring.7

This will sound silly as I was a 6 yo back then. My father had got a computer for doing some office work. He used to do a lot of the stuff using MS Word. I loved seeing the Pipes screensaver marvelling at the infinite combinations of pipes. But, what got me the most excited was Clippy, the infamous Office Assistant. I started using computer just to play around with clippy. Right click, do a trick and stuff. Oh the memories...1

Anyone got a motivator for university?
I love to do all the tech stuff - but i am sooo sick of memorizing stuipd stuff and edge cases...5 -
Hey Kotlin users. Do you use Kotlin for Android, or for non-Android stuff? If both, then answer Android. I'm interested to see how many non Android Kotlin devs we have here.2

Where do you guys follow the news regarding your current language? Is there some good place other than the official stuff? I mean I do C# but I don't feel like reading the Microsoft website... It's just seems so off and unnatural to read :D4

How do I get into low-level programming?
I already know Java Js and Python and I feel I want to take my skills to the next level and learn C or Go.
But what to start with in that area after I learn the language? I have no idea what to do with low level stuff. -
What do you guys thing about manjaro?
Gonna use it to separate my work stuff(Linux) from the distracting stuff (windows & gaming).2 -
Just created a community to talk about legacy codebases. It's r/legacydev.
At this point I have no idea what to do now. I feel that the world already has too much stuff and too many disengaged communities.4 -
I've been doing web dev for 3 years. Now, I want to do some mobile stuff. After I went through some internet resources, I decided to give Phonegap a chance.
Is it worthy my time?!7 -

Pretty new in my company.
Every time i ask something like vcs or other stuff they just tell me do it this or that way, because it's 'grown historically'... I can't hear that anymore... They just don't give advice and show me how to do stuff but not explain... And always say the two words... I can't hear them anymore... -
Hello guys, I've got a question. When you're working with someone in a project using a VCS, how do you go when implementing stuff? Do you create a new branch and then merge to master or do you tell to the other guy that you're going to do "this thing" so he doesn't do it or what? I've never collaborated with someone and I would like to have a little information about this topic. The things I've built have been all by myself so If some day I ever plan to work with someone else I rather know this stuff already.3

Hey guys, is there an easy way to avoid having all that bunch of stuff node_module comes with when you create a React project. Shit consumes more that 200mb on the fly. Do I fucking need all that stuff packed inside node_module?12

Hypothetically, your parents partly own a company. They ask you to do some technical stuff for this company (They think its easy, but technically speaking its not. IT isnt magic), but you've got a graduate school, an unfinished research proposal, and a day job with deadlines to deal with. You still do it anyway. Do you have a right for some sort of compensation? Do you have the right to reject?12

My school was teaching 'progamming' - Scratch and HTML. I was interested and wanted to do more advanced stuff. So, I basically browsed the E-Interwebbernet and found some good tutorials for languages I was interested in.

Hello ranters!
Do you listen to any particular song/music genre when coding?
Normally I listen to IDM and other electronic stuff as well as jazz, lately I've been listening to this...

Also, happy weekend!9 -
Work on my own side projects. Even just taking notes about what to do and what to avoid. When I think my own stuff avoids the conceptual flaws which cause low motivation at work, I feel fine again! Bosses never learn, but I sure do!

Hey guys, I'm just starting to get addicted about coding and stuff, and I do some research, is it possible to make our own mining platform using sourceforge ? I mean, Satoshi must start from something to make Bitcoin right. Anyone ?

If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1 -
OKAY GUYS I NEED YOU. I have an idea for an app (bet you’ve heard that before haha) and I really want to make it.
I have to learn swift, so online tutorials are my go to (pls recommend material).
However, I’ve never really done backend before, and I’ll need it to make my project (accounts & stuff). Where do I start for swift/iOS backend programming? Do I need to buy a server? Where do I host the stuff?
Pls help8 -
Anyone touched sims 4 modding in python and this resource-xml stuff?
How the hell do get people into that and know what they have to do? -
Do you guys listen to any programming podcasts which do not just center around one particular programming language? Any podcasts regarding topics like universal programming concepts, history of programming etc. At the moment I'm listening to Command Line Heroes (from RedHat) but I have almost listened to every episode and need new stuff :)

Sometimes I don't do a proper review because I don't want to seem very nitpicking. However, now I have to maintain the code that was merged and it has some stuff which is not correct. Now I have to fix it.1

Spent the day helping someone troubleshoot why they can't print from their Samsung tablet, because somehow as a DBA I "know how to do that stuff." Never figured out why it wasn't working.
