More like the most obvious thing I accidentally left OUT of an application without thinking about it.
"application seems advanced/cool/working! Oh by the way how do I log out?"
😐😮😧😅😰😭16 -
To the Windows 10 users of the unofficial devRant client.
I will release soon the v1.4, but I'm already thinking about the future of this project.
What do you think about this concept?
Let me know if you like/hate it.
Any suggestion will be considered.
Thanks!59 -
Anyone else went to bed thinking of how to solve a bug in their code and then ends up dreaming about it then, the idea of how to solve it comes into mind. You wake up to try it out and it worked? 😀9
-
When everyone is complaining about how terrible JavaScript is and I'm just sitting there thinking "but... I like it.."9
-
Rant rant = new Rant
rant.isRant = false // !!!
I woke up this morning after not thinking about my code for a day, and realized i had a flaw in my validation design. I fixed it before opening my eyes.
It's kind of amazing how not thinking about a problem can help solve it. Even if you don't know it's there!6 -
BRAIN_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION
Could not execute "sleep()", as main thread was busy thinking about why a beautiful girl would just handle me her number.
Ok we did get on well but it was unexpected nevertheless
Thank you brain for wasting my day 👍11 -
What do you guys think of having a "go anonymous" feature while ranting?
I was thinking when community will go larger and people who know each other in real life, start following each other, then it might become hard for them to rant about stuff or they might become hesitant in rantings.26 -
Got a new job as devops.
Got brand new thinkpad on day 0, it was waiting for me out of the interview room.
I think I'll like it here 😃
Only thing I'm thinking about is if I should continue with doing devops/sysadmin or go back to programming...15 -
I'm thinking about doing a live coding stream on twitch this saturday, late afternoon or evening (CET).
I've never done a live stream before.
Do you have any suggestions or interests?
I'm thinking about something like a small RESTful API with Angular4/TypeScript (frontend, single page application) and CraftCMS/PHP (backend) with somebasic theory about HTTP requests / response, redirecting, data transfer and interfaces et cetera...
The duration will be around 2-4 hours, maybe longer if I have enough Mate & Beer.
But it's all just an idea at the moment. 😉
I will create an empty project for the stream on my Github and push to it during streaming, so you can pull it live or later.17 -
Yesterday ... well no, today it was, I couldn't go to sleep because my brain couldn't stop thinking about solutions for this problem I had and I literally got up from bed and went to my computer to test my ideas. It still didn't work and eventually I got so tired that I went back to bed, I was still thinking about solutions when I fell asleep.12

Person who has an attention span of 3 minutes, has never done math before, and has no background in any form of code whatsoever, and will never need it:"I'm thinking about learning Python."
Me:"Go for it but it will be difficult to remain motivated."
Person:"But I really want to do this."
Me:"So did every corpse on Everest."4 -
I hate fanboys. If ANYBODY is saying something against "their" company, they get upset and argue about it like little children. If your technology is shit, if your browser sucks, if your phone explodes, if your OS is slow, just admit it. I can't stand these fuckers thinking they have to defend themselves just cause a company released a shit product...10
-
So last night i was dealing with some mysql query issues trying to grab some complex data from a relational database and ended up giving up.
This afternoon i was about half-asleep going to nap, not even thinking about the code and randomly came up with the solution.
A few hours later i made the changes and it works as intended.
Anyone else solve code subconsciously ? 😂😂😁😁12 -
I was thinking about using Drupal for project, just to try out a CMS. Before using it, I decided to search devRant for "drupal" to see how bad it is.
Nope, I am just going to use plain old VueJS with flexbox.9 -
So... People até talking about windows update crash??
Omg....
It crashed on me after updating... I was late to bed so just pressed the doom button (power off)... Because I was coming on vacation next morning...
Still thinking about what's expecting me after I return15 -
Does anyone else get this super lazy feeling where you want to write code but you don't wanna have to actually type it? Like I'm here in bed thinking about my projects but I don't wanna grab my laptop and get to work I just wanna think my code into existence.8
-
Just do it!™️
For real.
Thinking about writing an app? just do it!
Thinking about creating a website? Just do it!
Thinking about the game? You just lost!6 -
You know... fuck frontend development.
I don't mind developing a nice interface and thinking about how users will work with my software. But I HATE (lack of a stronger word) the whole npm/grunt/bower/yarn/everyfuckingframeworkclient chaos.
Can we just pick ONE fucking tool and mature it.
...
There8 -
The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -
So there it goes again,,, I am thinking about quitting again.
I feel that I cannot be the sole sysadmin for a company whose critical IT-infrastructure lives on Life-Support, deprecated software and hardware, and the unwillingness to actually invest it in.7 -
Found good startup idea, thinking about it few days and almost planning, one day i searched similar products from google and found exactly my product10

Got my first successful freelance job done today!
Was a very basic website but...I still got paid and I feel good about it. Seriously thinking about making a decent web app that can help me nail more customers.3 -
Having an philosophy exam in less than six hours. It's 2 am. Laying in bed, thinking about that stupid DNS bug and how to fix it. I have 4 1/2 hours of sleep left - wish me luck ¯\_(ツ)_/¯4
-
We were going over man in the middle attacks today and I honestly just could not stop thinking about that SpongeBob episode where Squidward keeps intercepting the bubble messages between SpongeBob and Patrick and it was so dumb that I could not stop smiling.3

In case someone is thinking of giving Linux a shot, but confused about how it works, give this website a shot. Beautifully designed and awesome for learning Linux!

Me: closes eyes and says to myself how I MUST get some sleep..
My brain: *starts thinking about keywords MUST, SHOULD, REQUIRED and how those are defined in RFC-2119*
Why I just can't get some normal sleep, could it be licensing issue with my brain? 🙈2 -
I have a friend who likes to change his tech stack every time he reads about a new technology online.....He started working on a startup idea of his.....He started with Larvel.....then came NodeJS...Then came .Net Core......Then Go.....And yesterday he told me that he is thinking about making it in Vapour.
Him: how long do you think it will take me
Me: ........Forever4 -

Hmmmm they are selling some used dell precission t3500 desktops at work.
Intel Xeon, 8 gb ram, windows 7 for $60 bucks. Thinking about using it as an experimental Linux machine.
Yay or nay? What do y'all think? For $60 it certainly does not sound too bad eh?11 -
1) Heck yeah, great idea
2) Sit like 60 minutes there thinking about a name for the project
3) Build the basics
4) ..meh fuck it2 -
I remember when I first started programming and used to be scared of classes. I was thinking about it after I wrote several today like it was nothing.3

Rantberry PI
Thinking about making this into a terminal that accepts a serial connection from my IBM 5150 PC for that Chroma Green authentic text based experience. ;)
Seriously though. How awesome would it be to use a circa 1981 IBM 5150 as your terminal? Lol!1 -
-> Contribute to Zulip's mobile app on github.
-> Contribute to babel.
-> Build 5 npm packages.
-> Dive into Haskell.
-> Have 100,000 ++s on devRant😁
-> Make a private project I built on github public.(still thinking about it).4 -

Hello fellow devs. I will be having my internship in November this year. I main java language and thinking about diving into web development with Java EE.
Can you give me some tips on how to start? It feels too vast that i dont know where to start. Thanks :/10 -
When your boss comes to your desk and starts talking about a great feature with such enthusiasm and you can tell he's been thinking about it for a while.
"we already have that. You asked me to add that like 3 weeks ago."2 -
For weeks I told my friends about devRant and how cool it is but they were like "meh! 9gag is better" or "I prefer Facebook".
Today I showed them my laptop with the new devRant stickers and suddenly everyone is downloading devRant.
Now I am thinking why did I waste my time.1 -
A question arose in our office today and I can't stop thinking about it:
If you imagine your life as a file lying somewhere, being steadily changed and expanded - of which filetype would it be and why?8 -
*Have idea.
*Start thinking about it.
*Start seriously thinking about it.
*Push yourself to do it.
*Have a mini unconscious panic attack that tells you you're gonna fail.
*Do something else completely unrelated to what you wanted to do.
*Feel good about the meaningless shit you just achieved.
*Recognize you're procrastinating.
*Try to stop.
*You can't cause you're stupid and lack the control and discipline to trick your own mind.
*Watch video about how to overcome procrastination.
*Get a more firmer understanding of it.
*Realize you're a helpless piece of shit.
*Cry till dead inside.
*Resume daily mindless shit.1 -
Why thank you! 😁
Much appreciated! And let me just say while I'm thinking about it, devRant is hands down the best community I've been apart of in a very long time. Keep up the rants!4 -
Finally swotched to Vim. Was thinking about it for a while now, and after installing Manjaro with i3, I decided to skip additional text editors. And you know what, it's fucking awesome. I've only played with it for one day and I love it.7

Today my girlfriend wake up, to go to college, saying good morning honey. I replied without further thinking "Merge it, good night" and my body dropped on bed and I immediately felt asleep. Now i don't know how to feel about it...1

Me being me:
*Me thinking about something*
*Unlocks phone*
*Goes to DevRant*

TrollBrain: this is not DevRant

Them blank moments :/ -
I'm gonna find a folding chair to swing at the next asshole who says "it is just like" without fucking thinking about it for more than a second or two....7
-
Fucking hell. When you go to bed sorta early, but can't stop thinking about your latest project for some fucking reason. So you wake up hours later STILL thinking about it, thus you aren't even sure if you slept at all. Doesn't feel like it. What the fuck? Programming, are you my goddamn love interest or what? Anyone knows the feeling?1

Thinking about transferring the majority project from mongo to MySQL. It makes sense rationally but - feels like there is a creeping darkness is looming over me.7

When each layer of abstraction is peeled off from a program and I understand it down to some level.
It always gives me goosebumps thinking about how much each generation of humanity is contributing to our advancement.5 -
Question:
Kotlin?

Thinking about giving it a small touch but wanted to look on what others thoughts are.

Build a docker image.
Adds config file .
Build cache ignores new contents.
Hours of trying to figure the shit out.
Bash into it.
GOD DAMN DOCKER HAS CACHED THE VERY FIRST VERSION OF THE FILE.
Hours lost with headcaches and thinking about existence. Fck my life.9 -
I have a strict rule about putting my computer away by 7pm.
I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.
Setting a time gives my brain time to let go before it's time to go to bed.2 -
Damnnn, have u ever found the solution to problem while u were sleeping cause i found the way how to fixed a bug in my dream maybe cause i was thinking about it before i went to sleep but its really weird when i think about it. 😬🤯1

Been writing some Python apps for the last weeks and I really enjoy the language. I got all the basic stuff down but not sure how to progress to learn the more advanced stuff. What even is advanced stuff in Python and where can I find information about it?
I'm thinking about creating an API, any advanced techniques I could benefit or use for that?9 -
Update came for the cpu thingies. Seems to be fixed because i cant access the cpu registers like before. But damn son it slows the pc down, fuck.
Thinking about switching to a ryzen3.4 -
I know people have mixed feelings about Uncle Bob and I really never followed the guy at all, but back in college I found his book Clean Code on a shelf and read it cover to cover. A lot of it really stuck with me. In fact, I might dig it up again now that I'm thinking about it.3
-
Looking for next book to read:
*Googled "Mythical Man Moth"
*Realized that it auto corrected to "Mythical Man-Month"
Ever since I heard of the book I pondered what the hell the title could mean, thinking about analogies of devs to moths...
I've never felt so stupid and disappointed at the same time.1 -
My first experience with computers was in "technology" class at school.
The teacher told us we had to switch off the monitor then turn off the computer.
Once, I forgot about this and did the other thing around, and I got yelled at ... It traumatised me so much that for a few years I always did it that way, thinking that I could break something doing otherwise...
I still feel bad thinking about this and hate that teacher for such a useless trauma about a thing he didn't understand either.2 -
Okay so I have a question about Windows Linux Subsystem and idk where else to ask this.
So should I think of it as a virtual machine except instead of being a completely separate environment it’s my current computers environment?
I don’t know how to word this how I’m thinking about it but I’m trying to figure it out.
Also do Bash scripts work with it? I assume they do but it’s just a double check.19 -
I'm about to get a burnout I suppose.
I just can't handle the amount of things we need to master in very near dead lines anymore. It's too much.
I've spend about 3 years with this year now. I am thinking of dropping it, because my grades only get worse, but on the other hand I had my dream of attending an university plus all the years that I've kind of lost here...
I can feel how the veins around my brain are full with pressure.
BTW. I'm thinking of dropping it and beginning an apprenticeship as a developer. But before that maybe an internship in that company xor taking one year free to fly to China and to the US to get my brain free.9 -
Coffee vs black tea?
I'm walking to my school and It's just freezing out here so I was thinking about if it should be coffee or some tea today.
Happy friday xd12 -
Everyone talking about Docker as the next big step in productivity. I still miss why Docker is so useful, to be honest, I see it as a "micro-vm " running your own software.
I have used this technology before but I really struggle to see where I could apply it usefully.
At this point, I'm thinking I'm just too naive about the issues it solves. So lemme go straight to the point:
1. How does Docker speed up your productivity?
2. How do you use it?17 -
I wonder which programming language does Batman use given that he has all the sophisticated techs and gadgets.8
-
Fuck arch.
I know what you're thinking
"arch isn't that bad he's overreacting"
WELL I'M NOT OVERREACTING!
Thanks to me trying to install Arch i cant get my laptop to boot. It just say some thing about network boot failing. I cant go into BIOS either. It doesn't work! I cant even boot from usb!! It still just say some thing about network boot failing, shows some weird black screen with a black bar at the top left and after a while shows some thing about network boot failing again and that repeats9 -
I've started at school, but thinking about it since I were a child (10/11 YO) thanks to Crash Bandicoot!!
Damn, I've loved that game! And since then, I've dreamed about becoming a"videogame programmer", then I've found out that developing it's funny too, so for the moment I develop every time I can, one day I'll do my course to become a gameDev :D3 -
I've been programming professionally for a year and it went without any embarrassing experience, even without thinking about preventing any embarrassment ._.
Am I boring?5 -
Been thinking about how to detect sounds for weeks and finally got enough time and motivation to do a Google search... and find an entire example....
All that thinking and worrying for nothing.... now i just gotta figure out how to install PyAudio.... hope it's not hard.... or maybe I already have it installed....8 -
Just saw an article online that Apple is thinking about making automobiles.
Not sure how people will see outside since it won't have Windows...3 -
So my friend that wanted to start learning how to code started with some basic JS and he just decided after a little research to learn some C++, started out with free tutorials but I recommended a C++ Udemy course that was recommended to me from one of you guys, he said he was enjoying it so I was pretty happy...
At about midnight last night he tells me he is thinking about switching to Linux after using Windows his entire life... I have done gods work my friends...
I'm thinking about trialling him with standard Ubuntu 18.04 and maybe Elementary OS 5.0, anyone else got some recommendations for a new Linux user's first distro?6 -
I'm thinking about making an linkidin account. I'm mostly a privacy centered person so I don't have any social media. Should I do it because it can maybe help me in my career? I'm currently at my first junior dev job.
Love to hear your opinions.3 -
Trying to sleep knowing you have at least 5 bugs to try to fix when you wake up so you go to devrant to complain about it just to go back to thinking about the bugs and not sleeping.1
-
Today I heard a discussion on the radio about AI and computers taking over the world. it was a really uneducated and stupid discussion but it got me thinking. What do you guys think about this? Do you think AIs will ever take over the world. Could I have some more educated thoughts?12

Got back at work after 2 weeks off
Useless to say I did not remember what to do or where to start…
Today I was working on a feature and while thinking about code organization I found an empty function ready to be filled with the exact name I was about to type.
My 2 weeks ago self prepared it for me… it was so kind of him -
I'm thinking about starting my own blog, where I can post my research and/or opinions on...
Though my private projects have a bad reputation I still think I might try one again and see if it works6 -
So looking at React/Node and all the GitHub projects etc. It seems JS/Node is the current/next big language like Java, C++. Runs on everything, can build anything with it, and is well supported.
Sorta crazy thinking about it though since JS is old and used to be shit used by script kiddies...20 -
First of all sorry for the bad picture. Let's move on...
Deleting this method like:
Who the hell did this nonsense?
I just took a picture of it so I could post it here and rant about it.
Sure felt stupid after deleting it for not thinking about a protected method in the parent class that is part of an API.
So... Yeah....
I was feeling too confident in my skills lately anyway6 -
Starting to get really hyped about how my book is progressing, thinking about starting to put some promotional items and desk tat together...
Oh lord I'm a better author than a dev, someone slap me...
(I'm slightly terrified that it might actually get finished and may have fans so my mind is sort of melting into sludge and I hide it behind excitement)17 -
If a frontend dev asks for screens, mocks, designs or whatever, all the company pushes for it and gives it to them, but if a backend dev asks for a set of input/output samples for a feature, the same people claim "its so hard to think about the cases"... Wtf are they thinking?3
-
I would like to proclaim my utmost love and respect to a programming language and one of its framework.
This language/framework combo was so beautiful that during development I had fantasies about it coming to life as the women I want to marry. I genuinely felt love in my heart to her. I even felt butterflies in my stomach thinking about her!
But I'm worried I might jinx it. So I'm not gonna name it.
I love you.8 -
I hate my job enough that even thinking about a meeting with my boss gives me stomachaches and a dizzy head. I hate to admit this, because not only did I use to love my job, I also need to stick it out for a few more months because of immigration purposes. Fuuuuck.3

I have a question; when I get interrupted while coding (dinner, friends etc) I'm often "stuck" in my head while just thinking about the problem I were to solve in the code. Anyone else have this? Does it have a name and any tips to "let the code go" while not coding?5 -
Windows .... You are amazing ... Managing to change my BitLocker Key without telling me, crashed you Update as always and asking for the new key you did not told anybody about to recover yourself ... Great ... Just great....
Seriously thinking about to switch back to Linux like it was before and hiding these crap in VM ...1 -
thinking about getting a laracasts subscribtion, is it worth it at all? I've recently been working with PHP a lot, and my OOP skills are pretty narrow tbh, I wanted to learn more OOP and laravel, because there are a lot of job's that require you laravel knowledge.5

Manager: hey, I've been thinking about the new interface changes, Iand I've come to the conclusion that we really need to make it... (wait for it...) very intuitive

Start my days at 6am local to be able to have an entire days’ worth of access to my team because they’re all East Coast and I’m Pacific. And then work until it’s 5pm local regularly because I lose track of time. And then I can’t just turn it off at night, so then I’m restless thinking about the things I could be doing to make the project better.
How the hell do the rest of you stop thinking about work after work?question pain is annoying birthday tomorrow remote work is terrible for a workaholic horribly sunburned10 -

Anyone here been to/live in Sweden? I've been thinking about going over at some point, what's it like?19 -
So once upon a time I had this dream while I was sleeping:
I was programming this videogame while I was inside of it.
It was something like VR where I had a tron-like world and I was the god in there, I was able to make and destroy anything as I pleased.
What I did was making a sort of challenge where you had to destroy someone else's kingdom by accessing it via FTP and then just destroy the useful files to kill defences and then become an actual king of that place.
Once awake I started thinking of making this whole thing into an actual game, but then I started reading the documentation for FTP connection in C# (I was thinking about using Unity) and literally stopped thinking about making it.1 -
me, first job interview:
interviewer: so how about your knowledge of java
me: yeah, done some projects, should be ok
interviewer: what about polymorphism in java, can you tell me sth about it?
me (thinking i'm totally right): hehe, you can't do polymorphism in java!
guess what, didnt get the job :D6 -
Do you use personal assistants for home automation? If yes, what's your setup?
I'm thinking about setting up a RPi/similar with Jasper and bundling it up with Home Assistant, however, I'm not sure about the audio hardware yet.3 -
Am thinking about giving a class on "How to waste time". You should attend it. It is not going to be free though. Otherwise, it would be a waste of my time.4

Working in a shared office space, everytime I hear somebody brag about the "AI" they have on their stack, I ask "Really? Can you show me where it sits??" just to see how confused they get thinking it might be a new tech concept.2

Thinking about an amazing app.
Me: "I will start doing it tomorrow"
Brain: "yeah cool... LET'S DO IT!!"
tomorrow arrives.
Me : "I will this other app...it's fantastic!"
Brain:" oh my god...I can't wait!!!!"
a month passes.
Brain: "weren't you supposed to do your 46 side project apps??"
Me: "I remembered I already work 12 h/day......"2 -

Requirement: "Build teleport using a teapot and some tape"
Yesterday I spent most of my working day staring at the screen thinking about it, without being able to write a proposed implementation document. I felt the most useless person in the universe.
Me, today at daily stand-up meeting: «Honestly I have no idea on how to proceed, please assign me a different task.»
Manager: «Well, just think about it a bit more»

Happened a few ago when I started taking SQL classes in school. We had our theory exam with one question asking us to display the date of the following day. And since I knew dick about working with date, I decided to make the computer sleep for 86400 seconds and print current date (which was like the only command I knew about dates).I feel really stupid thinking about that now.. but it was fun :P3

My colleague sucks in all programming languages known to mankind, and he's one the best programmer I know.
Stop thinking "programming = programming language", languages are nothing ! Programming is about logic, architecture, paradigms, and that's about it.
Programming languages are the front-end of programming.2 -

What's the worst kind of creature?
A self assured delusional fuck
One who thinks he knows everything
One who follows his "instinct", not worrying about data
One who sells his way of thinking as the best one
One who likes to build before thinking through. And calls it experimentation
One who thinks a dev is a dev. Not worrying about years of experience.5 -

Used to use Arch, recently I've been using Artix with runit as the alternative init system. I need something simple and systemd free, and I think gentoo would scratch that itch.7 -
What kind of projects are you guys currently working on? What technologies are you using? I'm personally thinking about starting to use the MEAN stack to get a working knowledge of it and how it works...8

Going for a run but still thinking about how I can refactor the code I just wrote. Can't stop thinking about it. Is it just me?4

For uni we get assignments based on our classes. I'm always super excited about these and immediately start thinking about how I would implement it and come up with cool features I could add.
I would write out the whole thing and plan everything. Eventually I get distracted by other assignments or things. Then 1 or 2 days before the actual deadline I start coding like a madmen, thinking about al the features I wanted to implement and realizing I would never make it in time.
That's the moment I switch to plan B. Which is creating the best possible demo I can present. Most of the time this does the trick. I would show my professors the demo and they wouldn't notice the completely broken application and the code that was hacked together.
Luckily I always managed to get good grades!2 -
Some of you will maybe still remember my "discord library from scratch in python" project.
I am thinking about publishing the script (yes, it is only one script. I was lazy lol) on Gitlab today.3 -
Anyone into bonsai trees to give some tips how to start?
Been thinking about growing a bonsai by my own but I don't know a thing about bonsai trees.
I don't wanna buy one. Wanna make it and put it indoors, in my office.3 -
I just work without thinking about whether I want to do it or not. The more you think about it, the more you don't want to do it. Just get to it.

When you have to go but the problem you couldn't solve before haunts you and you can't stop thinking about it but you also won't find a solution because you can't and won't concentrate on the problem enough so it just keeps buging you out as you live your life. Yeah feels great.5

Using some tools - do you learn all their default keybindings (hotkeys), or do you customize them? [do you re-customize them with every new installation/workstation?]
Like vim, ide, SQL client, etc.
[thinking about IntelliJ's CTRL+F4.. It feels off]
I for one prefer defaults.3 -
Just about to get ready to import all of the hair sprites for my game and calculated it to be 1260 sprite strips to import... Fan-Fucking-Tastic!
To anyone out there thinking about making a 2.5D RPG, don't managing sprites is the worst thing known to man -.-1 -
I've been looking for job for a long time now and...
There's no more, just that.
I'm very sad about it, my actual company just doesn't care about my opinion at the dev team...
I've been thinking a lot about go with my own start up. What do you think guys?
Sorry for my bad English :/3 -
got the rest of the boxes out of storage and found this book I bought about 6 years ago. thinking about rereading it for fun.2

Thinking of ideas is not so much about them being unique as it is about tackling them in a unique way.
The only bad idea you can have is giving up on the last. -
Wow, I'm so glad that my Discord bot I played around with last year fits within AWS's free tier, because I totally forgot it existed. I only used it to test some things and then never touched it again.
Just rediscovered its existence when I was thinking about building a new bot, lol. -
I am going to set up my own mini company and I am wondering about the name I will choose. Definitely want something strange and sarcastic like "undefined" or "null"...but these two are already taken? I was thinking about "1;DROP TABLE users" but it is too long. Any ideas out there? xD2

Thinking about perhaps doing a Linux From Scratch. Never done anything like it but feels like it would be a good way to learn more about how Linux actually works. Do you think it's a good idea for someone like me with an ok understanding of Linux but only on a "user level", or should I start somewhere else?9
-
So I have this code written in node:
Function connect(){
const client = net.blahblah
client.on('close', () => {
Connect()
}
}
As the connect is called from within the close call back, it wouldn't be recursive right? Like if it disconnected a million times, it shouldn't throw a recursion error or use up a bunch of memory right? Or am I thinking about it wrong?2 -
Have any of you tried Firefox Quantum? What are your thoughts about it? I am thinking on switch from Chrome on macOS.7
-
Disconnect from everything that you're thinking of for a moment. Step away from your computer, and dump all of your thoughts out for about five minutes.
In better terms: clear your cache. Your devices need it, and you need it too. Bonus points if you give your eyes a stretch and look outside your window.2 -
I'm having a very hard exam on tuesday, and I am very anxious about it. I feel physical pain in my chest just thinking about it.7

Her: and they were roommates
My autistic ass, picking my belly button while contracting my neck muscles on the left side, trying to balance the tension in the precise spot between regular and uncontrollably cramped, singing “One” by U2 in my head, keeping my eyes completely relaxed to focus on those little blurry floaty thingys, knowing full well that when you focus on them, they disappear, assessing whether it is time to trim my nostrils' hair, focusing on feeling the surrounding smell, wondering whether I can figure out whether it is time to change my bedsheets without getting closer to them to smell them properly (do I feel the smell? I don't feel it, but is that because bedsheets are fresh, or because I'm too far away to smell it?), thinking about whether my T-shirt is exactly centered and whether one side has more fabric than the left, thus weighing more, so I have to readjust it, also thinking about whether “text/pain” is a good enough name for my book: please continue
(I know that the answer is “oh my god they were roommates”, but I want to socialize and not appear as a smartass, all while thinking about whether it's authentic or not)2 -
To anyone with good knowledge of RxJs:
Should I be careful how many subscriptions I have open at a time? I'm specifically thinking about memory usage.
While obviously it's more, does it make a huge impact on memory usage, if I have 20 subscriptions active, compared to 2?5 -
Isolating every part of the system optimizes current performance.
And it also hinders any future connections from being formed.
Just thinking this is also true about group, team and personal connections as well.2 -
People have been thinking about creating an IRC channel for live ranting. Why not just do it?
Feel free to join #devrant in freenode IRC2 -
I need ideas for my honours project. I'm a web dev student so I want to create a website.
The trouble is, there's not much I'm passionate enough about to create a website for. It also needs to have some form of research in it.
I was thinking something based on VR but I'm not sure.
Ideas?3 -
My academic life.
Because it has nothing to do with programming whatsoever. And yes, this month is final exam month. While I am here thinking about my programming project 😂😂 -
I uninstalled Brackets today. I haven't used it for about a year since I moved over to VSCode. I genuinely shed a tear thinking about the websites I made with it. I wrote my first line of Node in that program... Goodbye old friend1

I am thinking about learning Ruby. Some awesome things like Oh-my-Zsh and Homebrew are built using Ruby. Read many posts about it. Some say Ruby is overrated and cannot be scaled.
What do you devs think?7 -

Whatcha thinking about the
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8
(i7-10510U, 16GB, 512GB, 1080p)?
Found one for a dirt cheap price (campus discount) and think about buying it.
I'm largely using linux, including somewhat exotic distros like Void,Gentoo, Alpine.2 -
aaargggggghh, some fucker thought its clever to allocate memory in a tight loop..and do a switch/case in it as well. the size and branch taken was known beforehand -.-
preallocating and thinking about the code for a second is really hard for some ppls brains it seems.. -
Wondering about how I should continue with my blog.
One the one hand, Ive always liked the video format Uncle Bob uses, and I think Id actually find it easier to talk about my ideas rather than write about it.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people prefer a written article they can read at their own pace.
Thinking I might try a hybrid of some sort, like record a vlog and then write the article afterwards, using the video for reference since I already got the words out.2 -
There is one mistake that I keep doing all over again...
First of all, there is a task I don't like. Therefore I start thinking about writing a script for it.
I write a quick solution and it does not work!
I am allways ending up with spending ways to much time on the given task...
Can someone please tell me why?1 -
Deepfakes concerns me also thinking how to solve this problem
Just watched vox video on it
Went to PornHub and typed “Deepfakes”
What i see is just too concerning Think about it guys how would you feel if that was one of your family member who is victim.
Not Cool !!26 -
Ok, I'm fed up with this, just read something about android constantly monitoring your phone's location, now it's time to shut this up.
Would you please be so kind and share information on which alternative "privacy-first" OS I could use and how to flash my device? For all I know, it runs a custom HTC modified OS. I'm quite unfamiliar with all those things gravitating Android. Heard about Cyanogen mod but that's about it.
What about compatibility with apps downloaded through the play store? (thinking about Threema) I would also need compatibility with WhatsApp (yeah, sucks, I know, but hard to convince regular people)
Thank you all :)2 -
Hello,
I have a job interview tomorrow, and it appears to be a great opportunity. Could you guys suggest some questions I could ask the interviewer about the company, and some questions I should ask about the job too?
I was thinking about asking about the corporate culture, and about the company's vision.
But apart from thr company, I would love to know about the job too. I have always ever been employed as a contractor and freelancer. So I nevrr really had to do kuch in interviews, but I'd love some help as this would be my first ever interview.7 -
So I was thinking about learning to write some Go code. I downloaded it and it didn't work. I struggled for hours just to get it to execute a file, but I could not get it working for packages.
Never have I stumbled upon a language that's working AGAINST me.
I gave up, Go beat me. I removed everything on my computer related to Go. Fuck Go!8 -
Freaking deadlines. I just hate them. There's something evil about thinking that you can forecast the future perfectly and even more evil if deadlines are by just eyeballing the problem. I can rant ask day about freaking deadlines.
The emotional consequences of missing a deadlines are a sure way to have everyone feeling guilty. To me is one of the most obnoxious ways of gaslighting.
The name itself, think about it? Why aren't they called Targets? Why freaking deadlines????1 -
The worst part about trying to come up with an antialiasing technique is running the demo application and thinking "hey that doesn't look too bad" and then reaslizing that the image doesn't have any antialiasing on it whatsoever
I know my technique looks bad right now, thanks for rubbing it in -
Today I read a blog about React Native, and I was amazed to see that Facebook, Instagram, Airbnb uses this.
Is it already a thing now, thinking of giving it a try
There is so much confusion out there for a mobile developer what platform to choose, btw m developing native android apps from past 3 years.
What are your thoughts on it?6 -
Here developing a react native app using console.log everywhere cause the debugger won't stop at the right line or skip libraries when stepping.
But I still somewhat like RN 💙 I think it's a fairly ok framework when you get the hang of it.
I was thinking about giving Flutter a try though, and see how easy it is to use. What do you think about this library?2 -
!Rant && !Tech
Anybody try to memorize anything large? I am thinking about memorizing books just to do it, and to prove to myself that referencing crap isn't required all the time. Might be interesting.
Posting here because I want my community's opinion on the value/nature of the question.3 -
Is it just me? When coding I can be in deep thought of how to best write a function and then next minute I find myself thinking about socks or some other random topic. Brain why you do this to me!
-
So yesterday evening when going to bed I wanted to sleep asap.
Therefore I used a 'tactic' called count to ten and then start over again. This is supposed to be relaxing so you stop thinking about other things an you get sleepy faster.
It usually works...
...But then my brain decided to write a program for said procedure in my mind. I actually started thinking:
int count=0;
While ( ! isAsleep() ){
think(count);
count++;
If( count == 10 ){
count = 0;
}
}
It didn't really help me falling asleep...1 -
every work i'm at, every assignment i do, i have to learn how THEY do things, how THEY think about things, i can't just be doing stuff, i have to be thinking about how THEY want me to do the stuff, how THEY would do it.
... who the fuck am I? how the fuck do I do stuff and think about stuff?
how the fuck would i know?

Thinking of developing a mod for a game I play, but only thinking about it so far. No coding yet. Probably no coding until I'm back at work on the 26th.1
-
Usually an idea comes up in the back of my head... Then i wait. After some time, the idea comes again. Now ill think about it, when i lay in bed, when im in a train, everywhere. Ill think about the technical implementation. How ill present it to someone else. To my boss. To my little brother. I think about the counterarguments, ill simulate discussions in my head, how ill defend it.
And then, one day, while thinking about it, ill start writing it.
Edit: Its like my brain needs enough entropy to do something. Then it works, then it generates entropy again, eg youtube, gaming, working on something else, dreaming etc -
Random but does anyone have experienced with hosting your own git server together with a frontend?
I don't want to solely rely on GitHub.
I've tried gitlab before but was put off by the ridiculous amounts of resources it needed.
Been thinking about gogs for a while7 -
Got an excesa rpi2, booting from usb, with external rtc. Has been replaced so it doesn't have a purpouse any more.

Freelancers, what's it like?
Would you recommend it?
What stacks are must have?
What's maintenance like?
What's dealing with hosting like?
Is it mostly webdev? Is there any market for anything else really?
I'm thinking about going that direction. I've been burned by one company too many. I don't know how I can trust a company again. I also that if I have to really manually earn every last cent, might be the best way to make myself care about my work
I'm thinking about it8 -

Couldn't sleep most of the night because was thinking about dependency injection (Spring) and unit testing...
And came to the thinking that pretty much every time you need to create a new method it should be in a new class, wrapped with and interface?
So then how do you decide whether to create a new class/interface vs a private method in an existing class?7 -
Spend hours of many days organising and structuring the architecture just in my head. Often go to bet thinking about it and dream about it too.
Sometimes I record audios on telegram to myself so that I can remember what I thought, I never listen to them though.2 -

I love it when you and the dev team completely forget about the timeline and start implementing random shit thinking it'll work.
We will get there eventually -

when one of your best domains were taken for a long time and you didn't considered about buying or hijacking it or even thought about what you would even do with it because its taken anyway and you are not an asshole. But then out of nowhere you get an offer to get this domain. and you start thinking... what cool project you could do with it and what it may becomes - and what if your project fails and you wasted a great domainname... but ofcurse you stuggle for too long and the old owner bought it already back again, like he just forgot to renew it and didnt even cared about it that much.
congratulations. you now cant stop thinking about this cool project and what it could may be. instead you see someone else wasting it...
as if dev life is not depressing enough. back to localhost :( -
Question: Been thinking about creating a web browser as a side project. It would be a very basic program that can intrepid local html documents, so no HTTP for now. How difficult would this be?5

Here’s a joke I keep remembering on DevRant:
Someone asks about PHP in Great Britain being €.
Others responding saying to make it go faster you put the actual conversion rate €(0.88)
LOL
I still crack the fuck up thinking about it1 -
Just leave it and be angry about the project. When I start thinking about it the next day in most cases you know the answer of the stupid mistake you made 😅1

Ok, you have 4 weeks design time and no more do you understand? Yes. 1 day of design time left, after 2 rounds of feedback...'Hey, we've drawn up a layout of what structure we'd like the site to have after actually thinking about it, can we try it like this?'

Y’all wouldn’t happen to have some handy mental model for remembering how to iterate through input without being an idiot about it, would you?
Referring to problems like having to get all possible substrings from a given string, etc.
Wishful thinking on my part, probably, but I figure it doesn’t hurt to ask. <39 -

Thinking about a new annotation:
@JavaCondom
on function: it puts "... throws Exception " at the end
on class: reflection puts "... throws Exception" on every goddamn function
It could have global app property which makes appends every exception with a reassuring message like: "There is so much java code out there already, that this shit will never ever end"2 -

What is a open source project you can recommended looking at? I would like to go trough a project written in either C or Python to learn more about how bigger projects are managed and get used to understanding someone else's code.
I think those are both very important skills that I lack.
I was maybe thinking about git as I've heard it is well documented, but I'm not sure if it is easy enough to understand for me.2 -
Any NodeMCU owners, using ESPlorer, here? I am thinking about rebuilding it completely with a better UI/UX and adding a C++ language support.

Why is it that people start to care about quarterly objective key results only at the end of a quarter?
You know, those stretch goals decides by management grounded on wishful thinking rather than realistic planning.

Hi guys,

I'm betting that it's just me... but this whole (req, res) in express.js is hard to adjust to. It may as well be (r, s) or anything that doesn't look so similar. I'm writing (request, response) but I'm thinking about just using entirely different words that don't start with the same letter.1

Originally I'm coming from Java , about 2 years ago, I switched Node with TypeScript and had a hard time getting accustomed to Promises. It was a big relief when I learned about async/await. Much cleaner code, no brainfuck anymore when thinking about how to handle stuff that requires multiple async values and so on.
Now I'm working on a clients project as a Java dev again. SOA, Spring Framework, Kafka and MongoDB, nothing too complicated... if they wouldn't use reactor to bring reactive functionalities to Java.
It feels like I'm back in Promise Hell...2 -
I hate those websites that paint within one second and then it takes two seconds to load all the other assets. It seems bare minimum to me. Idk about you all but I would rather have it loaded in three seconds instead of me trying to scroll immediately and thinking my computer is going to crash from the low framerate.7

Design patterns a solution to a problem, not a solution for the sake of a solution.
It comes from years of developers banging their head agains a problem and iterating a solution. It was not done person sitting down and thinking about rules for good (general) software development. -

Question to the freelancers here.
How long did it take you to make a living with freelancing and did you start freelancing fulltime right away or 20-40% besides another job?
I'm thinking about freelancing for a while now, but I guess in the beginning the money coming in will be really unpredictable, right?
About me, I'd call myself a senior level developer (Java, JS, SQL and stuff like that). -

I need to finish it fast(don't really care about the quality hence JS) and have been looking on a game engine/framework called MelonJS anyone heard of or used it? Grateful for all advice u can give. The AI I think I've got covered, but also any advice is helpful...

I have been thinking about this for years but Brexit has kinda fucked things up. I am thinking of travelling and working, but now I am restricted to 90 days. The reason I have delayed is Brexit for one but my son is approaching 16, so I wanted to wait until he is on University. Let me get to the point, because i’m self employed I just need a computer and broadband, technically I can work anywhere and have always loved the idea of being a digital nomad. I am now thinking of how I can do this for 3 months a year, and how I can do it cheaply so I don’t have to work so much. Life is for living right? I have just watched a youtube video and am thinking wow! I could conceivably do this for 3 months a year. Just wondering about you guys wether it’s something that could really inspire you. Watch the video, it’s about the cheapest countries in Europe to live. and they are beautiful. Long airbnb rentals can be quite cheap. Love to know your thoughts and wether you have considered it or something like. https://youtu.be/-8hWB7spU7I2

I've been using Google Photos to serve images for clients E-Mail Templates since its a one time payment and I didnt want to continually pay for a server and storage.
Anyone knows if that violates any Google ToS since i use it pretty much commercially?
I couldnt find anything about that and was thinking about migrating the images to AWS7 -

I personally hate that ad blockers block analytics software, specially since (as by the law) users must give consent before it collects data, several options exist to opt-out, and they are not f'ing ads.
I've been thinking to set a cron job to fetch analytics.js regularly and serve it locally as, let's say jquery-4.0.js, and screw it. What's your insight about it, fellow frontend devs?8 -
!dev Now ladies if you please excuse my lang for a moment, I'm just curious to know if some 1 knows.

Want some other opinions here, I personally use a 2018 13" MBP for my portable device and was thinking about selling it and getting the latest revision of the 13" once they change the keyboard...
I tried the 16" keyboard and holy shit it feels horrible, I honestly like the butterfly mechanism feel, has anyone else gotten so used to the butterfly?3 -

Has anyone of you ever dreamed of solving programming problems? I wake up still thinking about a problem that is totally unrelated to everything I do. Most of the time I even spent extra time still pondering about it even tough I'm very much awake. Maybe I need to stop staying at the office for 10 hours.2

I wanna talk about the obsession that precedes every new personal project.
I keep thinking about it, searching, getting new ideas and more features, pulling my hair, and laughing like a mad scientist. I think I might be crazy.1 -

I was thinking about linux and it's security.
Many are sayin that do not require an antivirus. BUT
What if you install wine (3.0) .
And after that install a software (.exe) that contains malware. What about that!
I was thinking today, it would get inffected?2 -
I am thinking about leaving my job cause even though the work life balance is amazing and team is great, it doesn’t pay as much as tech companies around where I live (HCOL) and I feel like a terrible person for feeling that way.2

My fellow programmer, you came here for a rant?
I apologize, you can have no rants. I won't rant for you today.
But you can still help me. What do you think of TypeORM? I'm starting a new project and I'm thinking about using it.5 -
Anyone here using hackintosh?
I have high end windows desktop that is compatible with hackintosh and have been thinking on dualboot it for a while... and, MAYBE, went full hackintosh. What do you guys can tell me about it? Does it worth it? Or keep win 10?
BTW I also have a macbook pro late 2013 so MacOS is not strange to me.1 -

Finally got myself to buy a SSD for my laptop, so I was thinking about trying Ubuntu Mate...but wtf...

So I've been working with heavily data centric applications for 15 years or so. And I must say moving our data warehouse into the G Cloud was the worst idea ever. No tooling, everything is barely working, debugging is a nightmare.
If you are thinking about it, just don't.3 -
Friend showed me some video about some researchers being able to extract fingerprints of people from their pictures (like when you pose with the peace sign). Thinking about it, it's quite possible with the clarity of today's ordinary phone cameras and image enhancement. Thoughts about this?2
-
Do you use clone scripts? I would like to speed up a project a bit, and I am thinking about some clone script to involve, and then make the necessary changes on it, never did it before, so what is your opinion?

So... I like 30 seconds of code! And I like the idea of it tbh, I was thinking about something like before.
The question is, how bad will it be if I do a similar website but in my native language? 🤔
I don’t want to be a copycat .. but its really good idea for sharing knowledge and to help other programmers. -
I'm thinking about learning common lisp, but haven't found a project where it could be useful. Can you suggest some problems/areas where using lisp makes more sense?

Two words: drink coffee.
Besides that, a good playlist with non-vocal music, and a clear head. If I am excited about some other aspect in my life, I have little desire to code that day. I find it easiest when I start thinking about how to resolve a particular issue. -
I'm thinking to buy an android phone, as a secondary device(iPhone primary), I would like to install Kali, don't care about cam specs, would like it to be cheap but not painfully slow. any suggestions?5
